SCIENCE
5TH GRADE
TERRESTRIAL
ECOSYSTEMS
Terrestrial ecosystems are located on land and are
surrounded by air.
There are different types:
 Forests
 Atlantic Forests
 Mediterranean Forests
 Mountain Grasslands
 Deserts And Steppes
FORESTS
FORESTS
 There are a lot of trees.
 They are provide shelter and food for animals.
 There are two types of forests:
 ATLANTIC FORESTS. The weather is humid and summers are cool.
 MEDITERRANEAN FORESTS. The weather is dry and summers are
warm.
MOUNTAIN GRASSLANDS
MOUNTAIN GRASSLANDS
 The climate is humid and winters are cold.
 Butterflies, grasshoppers, ladybirds and deer are examples of
animals that live there.
 Plants are HERBACEOUS. They are soft and flexible like grasses,
clovers and wildflowers.
 These areas can be used as pastures.
DESERTS AND STEPPES
DESERTS AND STEPPES
They are found in very dry regions with extreme temperatures.
There are herbaceous plants like grasses and shrubs.
Hares, mice, snakes, camel and lizards are examples of animals
that live there.
AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS
 Aquatic ecosystems are located in water environments.
 There are two types of ecosystem depending on salinity.
 Marine ecosystems /Saltwater ecosystems
 Sandy beach
 Rocky shores
 Open sea
 Freshwater ecosystems
 Rivers
 Lagoons

MARINE ECOSYSTEMS/
SALTWATER ECOSYSTEMS
MARINE ECOSYSTEMS/
SALTWATER ECOSYSTEMS
 Saltwater ecosystems have high salinity.
 Water is in constant movement for the waves and currents.
 SANDY BEACHES. There are affected by tides and waves. (Seagulls, oystercatchers...)
 ROCKY SHORES. Shallow areas with sunlight where algae grow. (starfish, octopus...)
 OPEN SEA. The deep sea far from the coast. ( jellyfish, sardines, tunes, sharks,
whales...)
FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEM
FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEM
 Water in freshwater ecosystem has very low salinity.
River Lagoon
Extreme – Mediterranean – deserts – dry – rocky
shores – low – grasslands – rivers – terrestrial –
freshwater – high – sandy beaches – humid – cool

 Pollution
 DEFORESTATION
 DESERTIFICATION
 Endangered species
 National and local governments have an obligation to protect the
environment.
 People can all look after the environment every day.
 Natural and local governments can protect some natural areas by declaring them
Natural Reserves or National Parks.
 Natural areas include reserves, parks and marine areas.
 Biosphere reserves are a good example between human activity and nature.
