The Representation Of War In The Film The Pianist
In the film, The Pianist, Roman Polanski depicts the struggle of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a polish pianist
to survive World War Two against all odds. The central theme of the film, that humans are capable of
creating both beauty and destruction, forces the viewer to question human nature and reflect on the
beauty of music and destruction of war. Polanski manipulates our emotions through the extensive use
of a variety of techniques such as: lighting, characterisation and sound. Music is used to evoke an
emotional response in the audience while lighting is used to contrast the Germans and Jews . The true
to life characterisation creates an accurate representation of the war and as such enhances the effect of
pivotal events on the audience. Polanski utilises ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The monotone colour scheme and costumes force the audience to focus on the facial expressions of
the characters which in turn evoke certain emotions in the audience. The use of minimal dialogue
allows the actors to portray desperation in times of heartache, drawing the audience in and
manipulating their emotions. Szpilman is depicted as a very serious and inexpressive character; this
technique employed by Polanski allows the viewer to become engrossed in the musical culture of the
film as this is the only time we gain a glimpse of his expressiveness. At the start of the film it is nearly
impossible to tell the difference between the Germans and the Jews. However, throughout the war the
alienation of the Jews becomes apparent by the contrast in their health and appearance. As the film
progresses they become scruffy, the delicate and beautiful music which keeps Szpilman sane
juxtaposes his shabby appearance. Polanski utilises the genuineness of the characters to create an
emotional response in the audience and force them to focus on human

Descriptive Essay On The New York City
I close my eyes and everything seems so calm that it is as if time itself has stopped altogether. A wave
of peacefulness rushes over me. New York City, I still cannot believe it. I begin to hear a soft hum in
my ears that quickly increases in volume. I open my eyes and I am suddenly brought back to reality as
the train rushes by, its horn blowing loud and strong. The train slows to a stop and the doors open. All
at once a massive crowd of people rush off of the subway. Those of us standing on the platform push
through the crowd, praying that our massive group of dancers will all make it onto the train. Due to
the morning rush hour there is not a seat in sight and there is barely any room to stand. As the train
lurches forward we struggle to stay standing. I look out of the window and watch the flashes of graffiti
on the dark walls as we charge forward. The train stops and starts three times. Each station just as
chaotic as the last. We quickly approach our fourth stop, West 4th Street, the nerves begin to kick in.
The train slows to a stop and once again we push through the morning foot traffic. We follow the signs
towards the West 8th Street exit, struggling to stay together. I think to myself, whatever happens, don t
lose sight of the chaperone. As we approach the stairwell the air begins to feel cooler. We reach the top
of the stairs and the entire atmosphere changes. Whereas the people in the subway were frantic and
rude, the people that filled the sidewalks are calm

Transition To Adulthood In The 1970 s
Despite lowering the age to vote and drink in the 1970 s, Australia continued the practice of giving a
key too 21 year olds on their birthday, symbolising their coming of age , and with it, the underlying
expectation of respect and the adherence of social norms, just as how to act appropriately in public.
Between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the transition to adulthood was defined by, and adult
identity rooted in, the attainment of spousal status with the formation of a family to follow (Kenyon
Heath 2001b). Adulthood was steeped in the achievement of material symbols; marriage, houses and
children (McNamara Connell 2007). While it was evident in my interviews that the attainment of such

75% of my respondents that despite their desire to travel, even if they wanted to, they wouldn t be able
to afford to buy a home before they reached 30. After the second World War, Australia was
overwhelmed by policies that encouraged home ownership and families as individual units (Sharman
1984). Since such a time when housing was booming, home ownership, particularly in Sydney, has
become gradually unattainable (McNamara Connell 2007). Since the 1980 s the percentage of young
people aged 20 24 in Australia living in shared arrangements doubled (Burke, Pinkey Ewing 2002),
making apparent that other forms of household were inaccessible. This, I believe, reflects escalated
housing prices, interest rates and land value. Furthermore, in 1980 26% of young people aged 20 24 in
Australia lived alone, and by 2000, only 9.3% were living alone (Burke, Pinkey Ewing 2002). Thus,
despite Australia s economic geography, shared living has since become an attractive and viable
option for not only economically constrained students but also young single professionals with the
promise of friendship and mutual support (economic or otherwise) (Clark Tuffin 2015). Half of the
participants had moved into a shared household with a person or people they had met before, though
60% of the group hoped that they would make new

Columbus Leadership Analysis
Being granted a statue in remembrance of being great is a very honorable achievement. But, what
makes someone deserving of being permanently recognized? There are many individuals that not only
contributed to the successful status of the town of Columbus, but also Columbus State University.
CSU could be considered the pride and joy of the town of Columbus some would even say the town is
really building itself around this school. Hypothetically if the school were to ask who is the most
deserving of a statue here on campus, how would one decide? You would really have to ask yourself
who really made dramatic change here? If one had to choose between the candidates, John Townsend,
who was the first black student here at CSU, Thomas Whitley, the ... Show more content on

To make an impact on something or someone means to influence it or them in ways never; to inspire
change. Without a doubt, Frank was for the people, and was very courageous in his attempts to show
it. Frank not only developed just the physical aspects of the school but the dynamics of the school
through his beliefs and programs. Frank was a lobbyist for the acceptance of blacks and other
minorities. While he was president here at Columbus State, he started many programs for minorities to
bring them equal if not, better opportunities. Beginning with his faculty, he started a project called,
Minorities in Higher Education which brought awareness to the lack of diversity in the teaching
system. Another example of advocating for minorities would be him starting the foreign exchange
program here at CSU. Through this program, he developed the school s variety of race and culture. He
also started a program called The New World Project which basically helped students get jobs right
out of college, through training classes. Another program he developed was the Servant Leadership
program which gave leaders of the school many opportunities to develop their character as well as a
chance to pay for some of their schooling. By Frank Brown putting in the effort for the school and its
kid, he depicts the type of person he was and where his values stood, which is truly in the people. A

How Does Anne Bradstreet Present Her Husband
Anne Bradstreet was one of the most noticeable Puritan poet. She was an educated woman and this
gave her advantage to write about history, politics, religion, medicine and spirituality. She was
considered to be a devoted wife, a loving mother and a very sensitive poet. She wrote poetry because
she thoroughly enjoyed it and family, husband, and, children were the main subjects of her poetry.
Puritans valued marriage as a blessing from the heavens. It was considered to be a partnership made

The Pardoner from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales Essay
The Pardoner from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales
In Chaucer s Canterbury Tales, The Pardoner tells a story in the form of a sermon, an exemplum, to be
exact. He intends to teach the congregation that love of money is the root of all evil and that
consequences of sin is death. The symbolic function of The Old Man is debatable; is he, for instance
Death s messenger , Death himself, or a satanic figure who tempts, much in the fashion of the Devil as
serpent in the Adam and Ever story. The story is made even more complex and ironic by the
disreputable character of the Pardoner as narrator. He is an immoral man who tells a very moral story
for very immoral reasons.
The moral of the story is established through the story of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He completes their quest for death, when he informs them that he has last seen
Death under a large oak tree. The men hurry to the spot and instead find eight bushels of gold, and
decide to keep the gold. The reader is supposed to see that the money is death, and is lying at the root
of the tree, which is where we begin to form the theme, money is the root of all evil. However, the
drunken rioters do not see through this and they grow greedy and kill themselves through trickery.
They begin celebrating their fortune with bread and wine, however shortly after; the first two rioters
and the youngest rioter begin to display devilish thoughts to gain more of the money. However the
older two rioters kill the youngest because they want more money. Their journey ends when the older
two rioters decide to kill the younger rioter because they want more money, however the younger
rioter had already poisoned their wine to attempt to gain all the money. The older two rioters drink the
wine and die. Thus completing the theme, money is the root of all evil.
After completing the tale, the reader is lead to believe that the Old
Man is none other than Death himself. The man is described as wearing a robe that covers his entire
body; much like a Grim Reaper would wear. After he is treated so badly by these men, he just happens
to lead them into a death trap, which he knows will cost nothing but problems. It is also said that the

Margaret Steffler s A Complicated Kindness
Margaret Steffler s article, Fragments and Absences, states, Language in A Complicated Kindness,
constructed, responded to, and commented on by Nomi as first person narrator, demonstrates a
linguistic fragmentation comparable to the material fragments surrounding the deserted daughter and
sister (5). To understand this comment further, we have to analyze A Complicated Kindness. In
Miriam Toews novel, we focus on the protagonists Naomi Nomi Nickel; she is a curious and defiant
sixteen year old who is developing in a kind of stunted world, or as she states a non progressive
community (11). Nomi is trying to find herself, and this brings her into conflict with the community,
and its authorities, especially her uncle Hans The Mouth Rosenfeldt ... Show more content on

Her narration is filled with constant deviations, jumping around, and incomplete endings; her inability
to maintain focus, it seems, is stated at the very beginning of the novel, Nomi has a problem with
endings (1). So, instead of an ending, she simply states a memory, or begins another story; we can see
this in the spaces between some paragraphs, the lines that indicate a beginning of a new fragment, or
simply a new chapter. Another example of her inability to conclude is the novels ending, it seems like
she is writing to her teacher her final assignment. In the assignment she ends it by saying she will do
things like leave and start a new life, but in actuality she hasn t done anything she is still sitting in the
empty house, so the reader is left wondering, did Nomi really get out of the Mennonite community?
The ending in itself is not

Dizzy Gillespie Essay
Dizzy Gillespie deservedly ranks amongst the most influential and innovative jazz musicians of all
times. Every note played with his trumpet captivated a legion of devout followers from all different
age demographics and cultural backgrounds. Only Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong can tread the
waters of his talent and his ever growing legend, which was propelled by his revolutionary style. The
Bebop revolution would have been a real yawner without notable Dizzy Gillespie tracks and stunning
collaborations with top artists from the time period. He played alongside great musicians like Cab
Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Billy Eckstine, Charlie Parker, Charlie
Christian, Thelonious Monk, Max Roach and Coleman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The birth of Bebop music was built on a similar evolutionary process that has taken over many
different art forms since the beginning of human history. There was a yearning for change and a desire
to break the binding chains of the standard New Orleans jazz, Dixieland, and Swing music (Aycock,
1997). In the 1940 s Dizzy Gillespie and a legion of young and talented musicians went to war against
traditional jazz music and forged a new modern landscape of immense record sales, popularity and
fame. The creation of Bebop catered to the would be gods of jazz, because their talent rose to the top.
Musical characteristics of Bebop shifted away from simple melody variations and moved towards
intense improvisation and difficult harmonic progressions (Horricks, 1984). There was an air of
confidence brewing amongst the young innovators and a sense of pride in maintaining their
dominance. Dizzy Gillespie said this about the subject, There were some who couldn t blow at all but
would take six or seven choruses to prove it. So on afternoons before a session Thelonious Monk and I
began to work out some complex variations on chords and the like, and we used them at night to scare
away the no talent guys (Horricks, 1984, p. 30). The crucible that bred the Bebop style was New York
City and the famous Minton s Playhouse (Aycock, 1997). This venue can be viewed as a more of a
laboratory of modern jazz experiments than a simple small club.

Essay On African American Inequality
The African American fight for civil rights has been a time consuming conflict in the United States of
America. More than 50 years after The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed, African Americans are
still treated differently from their white peers. While some people believe that African American
equality was solved with the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States of America,
this is not correct. Ever since the election of President Barack Obama, unarmed African Americans are
still being murdered by their American peers, causing the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black
Lives Matter movement was formed after Trayvon Martin, a young black male, was murdered by
George Zimmerman. While the 21st century is here, African American racial inequalities are still a
major problem. On March 15, 1965, former President, Lyndon B. Johnson, gave a speech, We Shall
Overcome in Washington, DC after the violent march in Selma, Alabama. This speech was Lyndon B.
Johnson s most memorable speech because he spoke about getting congress to ban racial
discrimination against African American s in the voting polls. While voting is now open to people of
all races, racism is still very alive in the United States. On March 18, 2008, President Barack Obama
gave a speech, A More Perfect Union in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. President Barack Obama s speech
was also about the African American race. In President Barack Obama s speech he addressed the racial

Theories Of Pragmatics
Why are there so many theories in pragmatics concerning meaning in language? Why is the study of
language use crucial to understanding meaning in language? How does the development over time of
the main theories in pragmatics show a greater understanding of language use? Introduction First of
all, what do we understand with meaning? What is it? Meaning seems like a very straightforward
concept but it is very obscure indeed. As human beings we are designed to acquire meaning from the
world, it allows us make a conceptualization of the world. It is the most important feature of language,
as the main purpose of language is to communicate with each other, in other words, to know what we
mean . This looks quite straightforward and obvious as I have mentioned before, but what makes
meaning so hard to understand is the little consciousness that we have of the knowledge and principles
that govern our communicative ability that make us humans. As Aristotle said in Politics, Man is by
nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally ... Show more content on

The term context is vast, but it can be defined as the elements that surround an utterance and
determine its meaning. The meaning of the utterances is inferred, that means that the meaning is

instance, consider two people, Jane and Ron, who have just started dating. If Ron says to Jane at the

It gives us an understanding of the other person, and the feeling of having been heard makes the
people more able to listen themselves. Ways to make the other person to feel heard asking open

your own understanding Avoid questions that are actually statements and cross examination. From

Even when taking this approach some will still want to play the blame game or argue about who is
right. The book suggests three different ways to deal with these situations. First, reframing the
conversation into concepts the other person can relate to. Second, when the other party persistently
puts the conversation off track, by interrupting or denying emotions, explicitly name that behavior and
raise it as an issue for discussion. Finally, when all else fails, listen. The authors state the single most
important rule about managing the interaction is this: you can t move the conversation in a more

Essay On I Love Lucy
Desilu s iconic show I Love Lucy did not only break the industry norm for television broadcasting but
pushed the envelope for social issues during its time but also open the door for other shows that
seemed risky. America was in the post war era and looked towards the television to stay informed and
connected. Television sets were quickly entering homes which became what the radio was in 1920 s. It
became a prominent product during the decade of the 50 s, for instance, 3 million TV owners and by
the end, there were 55 million. The concept for the situational comedy was nothing out of the ordinary,
following a typical housewife, through comedic hijinks, in her everyday life. Lucille s portrayal of this
ditzy schemer did not exactly fit the view of a traditional American 1950 s housewife, revealing the
show s willingness to push social issues. Lucille Ball insisted that her real life husband Desi Arnaz

Through the movies viewed in this course this semester, we saw women who were able to play against
men and still keep their femininity. Nothing is lost when playing sports not traditionally meant for a
particular race or gender. Society must become more understanding when it comes to the sports
different types of people play and hinder from stereotyping anyone when they participate and perform
well in that sport. When women decide to participate in sports traditionally for men such as
bodybuilding, they risk the chance of being socially stereotyped as lesbians, or simply viewed as less
feminine then say women figure skaters. For example, Venus Williams is seen as criticized for being
very masculine in build and judged on that by her performance. The media has commented on how
well she plays, and has compared her to men in her sport. She receives fewer endorsements than many
other tennis players do because of her looks (but mainly due to her race). Men place themselves in the
same situation when they chose to perform/participate in traditional female sports like field hockey,
socially stereotyped as gay or less masculine than hockey players. There has been a change in the way
certain gender sports were viewed when women/men attempted to challenge the boundaries.

Jerusalem
Throughout comedy the emphasis is on human limitations rather than on human greatness (John
Morreal Comedy Tragedy and Religion). To what extent does Jez Butterworth focus on human
weakness and ineptitude in his play Jerusalem ?
Jez Butterworth s Jerusalem creates a comic vision focusing on the ambiguities, turmoil and
hypocrisies of the society presented on stage. Butterworth focuses on the characters degeneracies in
which the form of humour tends to be the exposure of their unruly behaviour and their reluctance to
conform to social norms. The most basic difference between comedy and tragedy lies in its central
characters, who are not heroes, and often, as with Shakespeare s Falstaff, are anti heroic The key

Ambiguity of American Gothic Anxieties
Since the 19h century, American Gothic fiction started to exist independently from the British type. In
fact, the latter was marked by its use of fantastic, externalized and metaphysical elements as opposed
to the boundaries of American Gothic fiction in which were expressed by historical, internalized,
racial and psychological characteristics. (Edwards, XVII) In Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven, Fall of the
House of Usher and The Tell tale heart and The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym and in Charles
Broken Brown s Edgar Huntly expresses a transformation of certain gothic conventions to an
American setting which are the result of 19th century ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In many gothic fictions, Native Americans are the villains of the story, as white American writers have
projected their sense of evil upon the native inhabitants. (Crow 137) This negative image towards this
group is the reality of the 19th century anxiety of miscegenation, and the fear of wilderness. A
shadowed forest, the possibility of an Indian lurking in the dark ready to attack and the unknown are
features of the wilderness in which created boundaries from the civilized town to the savage forest,
from consciousness and waking to unconscious and dreaming. In Hawthorne s Young Goodman
Brown, the feeling of dread and the unknown draws itself into Brown s mind as he journeys into the
gloomy forest. Brown, like most Americans, drew negative images of Native Americans and their land
of wilderness as he spoke: There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree. (Hawthorne, 606)
Moreover, when Brown reaches the witch meeting, he sees Indians or powwow priests interacting in
the evil ritual with people who follow puritan beliefs. The hypocritical aspect of Goodman Brown s
community is still seen as less demonic than that of the Indians, as they are always portrayed as the
lesser breed . Goodman Brown attest that the natives who had often scared their native forest with
more hideous incantations than any known to English witchcraft (Hawthorne 612).
Conveyed as demonic and adversary creatures, Indians were a common

Analysis of the Uncertainty Reduction theory on interpersonal communication
Through this paper I will conduct an analysis of the uncertainty reduction theory and will then apply it
to my own experience here in Colorado university.
This theory has been subject to many articles and studies in the communication and social
departments. Indeed, studying this theory can help us understanding human relations in interpersonal
communication. Each of us has been one day confronted to uncertainty, whereas in initial encounters,
or moving to a new a new place, or beginning a new work.
This theory is particularly important for me as I experienced high uncertainty when I first arrived here
in Colorado. When everything and everybody is unknown for ... Show more content on

Curiosity can be a real good motivator and if we can not predict the behavior of this person, we will
seek information in order to predict future behavior.
ü Anticipation: Basically, if you don´t think that you will be somebody again in the future , your
motivation to reduce uncertainty will decrease. You will have the impression to habe done all these
efforts for nothing.
As we can see, the theory of uncertainty reduction exlain us why we behave like we do in our relation
with others. But the theory of Berger has been subject to many studies. For example
, for Sunnafrank developed in his predicted outcome value theory that what motivates you to seek for
further information is the expected positive benefices you think to obtain. According to this theory
when, output value are seem to be positive for oneself, our motivation to seek information increases.
But in the contrary, if we expect negative outcome, we will decrease our motivation and in the worst
cass stop looking for information.in others words if somebody feels that a person can be rewarding to
him , he will look forward to get more information about him. His theory is similar to the high
incentive value condition of Berger.
Some scholars have noticed some problems with this theory . Sometimes information can actually
increase uncertainty rather than reduce it when the information is unexpected. Sometimes you learn
some information about a person that deceive you and make you seem them different. After that

Natural Gas Fracking
Not only is breathing in the methane fumes a risk to health, but also methane is flammable. In
Wyoming, a leaking methane gas well burst into flames, swaying the views of several individuals
(Lavelle 109). Since this well not only leaked methane but also natural gas, this fire quickly expanded
and burned a large flame. This fire lasted for months until the firefighters were finally able to put it
out. Copious amounts of individuals became forced to evacuate and eventually, their homes would be
engulfed in the flames. Another fire broke out, but this time it was located in a home. A family in

would be important in the safety of the town and the people. Not only would there be hundreds of jobs

Who Is Montag A Hero In Fahrenheit 451
There are 129, 864, 880 books in the world. Now imagine if there were zero. In Ray Bradbury s
Fahrenheit 451, this is precisely the goal of firemen and the majority of society. Guy Montag has been
a fireman for ten years, and he has always gotten a certain thrill from starting fires to burn houses
containing books to the ground. Then Clarisse McClellan comes along and changes his perspective on
everything. She says that firemen did not always use to start fires; they used to put them out, and
people were not afraid. I like to smell things and look at things, and sometimes stay up all night,
walking, and watch the sun rise (Bradbury 7). Clarisse questions his happiness, and Montag cannot
answer confidently that he is fully happy with his life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Montag reveals his secret stash of books in the attic, she nearly faints and tells him that he must
burn them in the incinerator immediately. Throughout the novel, Montag struggles with individuality
and making a difference despite dealing with his mind blocked co workers who quickly target him as
the outsider and turn the Mechanical Hound loose on him. There must be something in books, things
we can t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don t
stay for nothing (Bradbury 51). He develops a plan with Faber, a man who remembers what the world
was like before firemen began burning books. This plan just might be the key to regaining the people s
rights and restoring books to their rightful place in society. Firemen eliminated the people s ability to
express one s own opinion when they eradicated books and free knowledge from the world. In
Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury explores this idea of censorship and the fact that it bans individuality and
the ability to express one s

The Afternoon the World Changed Essay
On a mild winter afternoon in December 1941, Arthur rode his bicycle through the twisting streets of
downtown Everett. He didn t see many people outside. That Sunday, most everyone was huddled
around the radio listening to the football game between the New York Giants and the Brooklyn
Dodgers.
He took advantage of the mild day and figured he d catch the end of the game once home. He was
fifteen and more important things than football were on his mind. His thoughts turned to all the pretty
girls at school. The transition from parochial school to Everett high school had stunned him at first. He

shook her head. How many wars must she endure?
As the afternoon wore on the house filled up. Charles Jr. arrived with his wife Mary. Joseph and James
wandered in with their sons and then Maggie with hers. Rich came home and was spitting mad with
anger. Katherine saw his clenched fists and knew that he d be the first to go. She expected that Charles
Jr. would go next. At least, Arthur was too young so she could protect him for a while.
The boys were shocked to see their father walk in and sit down. He nodded at the boys but didn t say
much. He and Katherine looked at each other and a thousand thoughts passed silently between them.
The world changed that afternoon. A man on the radio said the Navy lost the entire Pacific fleet. The
air in the room turned electric. The boys wanted revenge. They spoke in excited voices about taking
the fight to the enemy. Their parents, aunts and uncles sat in grim silence. That day their world shifted
and the future filled them with uncertainty.

the participants were required to observe negatively arousing emotional pictures of war scenes and

The league had a culture that looked the other way when it came to players improprieties. There was

Chesapeake Colonies Dbq Essay
By the 1700 s, New England, the Chesapeake region and the Southern Colonies developed into three
distinct societies, despite coming from the same mother country, England. The regions of Colonial
America each had a distinctive culture and economy entirely different from the other regions. Religion
and religious tolerance was completely different in each region, running from being free to complete
persecution. Ethnicity and racial composition ranged from almost complete British descent to a wide
range of composition. Each region was politically and economically structured different and had its
own identity. Each developed differently based on immigration trends, geography and other features.

These colonists were motivated by greed and saw a better opportunity to become rich. Therefore the
settlers came over from England. A Virginia ship list in 1625 reports the number of people to be
transported to Virginia (Doc C). In comparison to New England, there were very few women or
families. Most of the people were men of about 20 30 years of age. The ratios and ages suggest that
these people were looking to make money over starting families. The Chesapeake colonies were
mostly funded by England. The Governor of Virginia, William Berkeley, asked the King of England to
help out (Doc G). These colonies maintained fairly close relations with England. They considered
themselves part of and under England, and still owed allegiance to England. The Chesapeake region
had a colonial assembly. These were mostly local people of the colony. There was also a governor who
was appointed by the King of England. The local people of the colony the colonial assembly and the
English appointed governor shared political power over the region. The House of Burgesses was
established in 1619 and was the first representative government in the New World. Similar to the
Chesapeake region, the Southern colonies were founded by the upper class and gentry of England. The
reason for this was that there were vast areas of land available that were valuable for farming. The

World War II And The Korean War
Modern warfare is warfare using the concepts, methods, and military technology that have come into
use during and after World War II and the Korean War.[citation needed] The concepts and methods
have assumed more complex forms of the 19th and early 20th century antecedents, largely due to the
widespread use of highly advanced information technology, and combatants must modernize
constantly to preserve their battle worthiness.[1] Although total war was thought to be the form of
international conflicts from the experience of the French Revolutionary Wars to World War II, the term
no longer describes warfare in which a belligerent use all of its resources to destroy the enemy s
organized ability to engage in war. The practice of total war which had been in use for over a century,
as a form of war policy, has been changed dramatically with greater awareness of tactical, operational,
and strategic battle information.
War in modern times has been the inclusion of civilians and civilian infrastructure as targets in
destroying the enemy s ability to engage in war.[disputed discuss] The targeting of civilians developed
from two distinct theories.[citation needed] The first theory was that if enough civilians were killed,
factories could not function. The second theory was that if civilians were killed, the enemy would be
so demoralized that it would have no ability to wage further war.[citation needed] However, UNICEF
reports that civilian fatalities are down from 20 percent

happening is when Jeannette is going to her new school in Welch it was her first day and the teacher
picks on her because she did not have to give the school her records to her not having them as that is
happening a tall girl stabs her out of nowhere I felt something sharp and painful between my shoulder
blades and turned around. The tall black girl with the almond eyes was sitting at the desk behind me.

  • 2. The Representation Of War In The Film The Pianist In the film, The Pianist, Roman Polanski depicts the struggle of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a polish pianist to survive World War Two against all odds. The central theme of the film, that humans are capable of creating both beauty and destruction, forces the viewer to question human nature and reflect on the beauty of music and destruction of war. Polanski manipulates our emotions through the extensive use of a variety of techniques such as: lighting, characterisation and sound. Music is used to evoke an emotional response in the audience while lighting is used to contrast the Germans and Jews . The true to life characterisation creates an accurate representation of the war and as such enhances the effect of pivotal events on the audience. Polanski utilises ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The monotone colour scheme and costumes force the audience to focus on the facial expressions of the characters which in turn evoke certain emotions in the audience. The use of minimal dialogue allows the actors to portray desperation in times of heartache, drawing the audience in and manipulating their emotions. Szpilman is depicted as a very serious and inexpressive character; this technique employed by Polanski allows the viewer to become engrossed in the musical culture of the film as this is the only time we gain a glimpse of his expressiveness. At the start of the film it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between the Germans and the Jews. However, throughout the war the alienation of the Jews becomes apparent by the contrast in their health and appearance. As the film progresses they become scruffy, the delicate and beautiful music which keeps Szpilman sane juxtaposes his shabby appearance. Polanski utilises the genuineness of the characters to create an emotional response in the audience and force them to focus on human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Descriptive Essay On The New York City I close my eyes and everything seems so calm that it is as if time itself has stopped altogether. A wave of peacefulness rushes over me. New York City, I still cannot believe it. I begin to hear a soft hum in my ears that quickly increases in volume. I open my eyes and I am suddenly brought back to reality as the train rushes by, its horn blowing loud and strong. The train slows to a stop and the doors open. All at once a massive crowd of people rush off of the subway. Those of us standing on the platform push through the crowd, praying that our massive group of dancers will all make it onto the train. Due to the morning rush hour there is not a seat in sight and there is barely any room to stand. As the train lurches forward we struggle to stay standing. I look out of the window and watch the flashes of graffiti on the dark walls as we charge forward. The train stops and starts three times. Each station just as chaotic as the last. We quickly approach our fourth stop, West 4th Street, the nerves begin to kick in. The train slows to a stop and once again we push through the morning foot traffic. We follow the signs towards the West 8th Street exit, struggling to stay together. I think to myself, whatever happens, don t lose sight of the chaperone. As we approach the stairwell the air begins to feel cooler. We reach the top of the stairs and the entire atmosphere changes. Whereas the people in the subway were frantic and rude, the people that filled the sidewalks are calm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Transition To Adulthood In The 1970 s Despite lowering the age to vote and drink in the 1970 s, Australia continued the practice of giving a key too 21 year olds on their birthday, symbolising their coming of age , and with it, the underlying expectation of respect and the adherence of social norms, just as how to act appropriately in public. Between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the transition to adulthood was defined by, and adult identity rooted in, the attainment of spousal status with the formation of a family to follow (Kenyon Heath 2001b). Adulthood was steeped in the achievement of material symbols; marriage, houses and children (McNamara Connell 2007). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 75% of my respondents that despite their desire to travel, even if they wanted to, they wouldn t be able to afford to buy a home before they reached 30. After the second World War, Australia was overwhelmed by policies that encouraged home ownership and families as individual units (Sharman 1984). Since such a time when housing was booming, home ownership, particularly in Sydney, has become gradually unattainable (McNamara Connell 2007). Since the 1980 s the percentage of young people aged 20 24 in Australia living in shared arrangements doubled (Burke, Pinkey Ewing 2002), making apparent that other forms of household were inaccessible. This, I believe, reflects escalated housing prices, interest rates and land value. Furthermore, in 1980 26% of young people aged 20 24 in Australia lived alone, and by 2000, only 9.3% were living alone (Burke, Pinkey Ewing 2002). Thus, despite Australia s economic geography, shared living has since become an attractive and viable option for not only economically constrained students but also young single professionals with the promise of friendship and mutual support (economic or otherwise) (Clark Tuffin 2015). There are many individuals that not only contributed to the successful status of the town of Columbus, but also Columbus State University. CSU could be considered the pride and joy of the town of Columbus some would even say the town is really building itself around this school. Hypothetically if the school were to ask who is the most deserving of a statue here on campus, how would one decide? You would really have to ask yourself who really made dramatic change here? To make an impact on something or someone means to influence it or them in ways never; to inspire change. Without a doubt, Frank was for the people, and was very courageous in his attempts to show it. Frank not only developed just the physical aspects of the school but the dynamics of the school through his beliefs and programs. Frank was a lobbyist for the acceptance of blacks and other minorities. While he was president here at Columbus State, he started many programs for minorities to bring them equal if not, better opportunities. Beginning with his faculty, he started a project called, Minorities in Higher Education which brought awareness to the lack of diversity in the teaching system. Another example of advocating for minorities would be him starting the foreign exchange program here at CSU. Through this program, he developed the school s variety of race and culture. He also started a program called The New World Project which basically helped students get jobs right out of college, through training classes. Another program he developed was the Servant Leadership program which gave leaders of the school many opportunities to develop their character as well as a chance to pay for some of their schooling. • 10. The Pardoner from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales Essay The Pardoner from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales In Chaucer s Canterbury Tales, The Pardoner tells a story in the form of a sermon, an exemplum, to be exact. He intends to teach the congregation that love of money is the root of all evil and that consequences of sin is death. The symbolic function of The Old Man is debatable; is he, for instance Death s messenger , Death himself, or a satanic figure who tempts, much in the fashion of the Devil as serpent in the Adam and Ever story. The story is made even more complex and ironic by the disreputable character of the Pardoner as narrator. He is an immoral man who tells a very moral story for very immoral reasons. The men hurry to the spot and instead find eight bushels of gold, and decide to keep the gold. The reader is supposed to see that the money is death, and is lying at the root of the tree, which is where we begin to form the theme, money is the root of all evil. However, the drunken rioters do not see through this and they grow greedy and kill themselves through trickery. They begin celebrating their fortune with bread and wine, however shortly after; the first two rioters and the youngest rioter begin to display devilish thoughts to gain more of the money. However the older two rioters kill the youngest because they want more money. Their journey ends when the older two rioters decide to kill the younger rioter because they want more money, however the younger rioter had already poisoned their wine to attempt to gain all the money. The older two rioters drink the wine and die. Thus completing the theme, money is the root of all evil. After completing the tale, the reader is lead to believe that the Old Man is none other than Death himself. The man is described as wearing a robe that covers his entire body; much like a Grim Reaper would wear. After he is treated so badly by these men, he just happens to lead them into a death trap, which he knows will cost nothing but problems. It is also said that the man ... Margaret Steffler s A Complicated Kindness Margaret Steffler s article, Fragments and Absences, states, Language in A Complicated Kindness, constructed, responded to, and commented on by Nomi as first person narrator, demonstrates a linguistic fragmentation comparable to the material fragments surrounding the deserted daughter and sister (5). To understand this comment further, we have to analyze A Complicated Kindness. In Miriam Toews novel, we focus on the protagonists Naomi Nomi Nickel; she is a curious and defiant sixteen year old who is developing in a kind of stunted world, or as she states a non progressive community (11). So, instead of an ending, she simply states a memory, or begins another story; we can see this in the spaces between some paragraphs, the lines that indicate a beginning of a new fragment, or simply a new chapter. Another example of her inability to conclude is the novels ending, it seems like she is writing to her teacher her final assignment. In the assignment she ends it by saying she will do things like leave and start a new life, but in actuality she hasn t done anything she is still sitting in the empty house, so the reader is left wondering, did Nomi really get out of the Mennonite community? Every note played with his trumpet captivated a legion of devout followers from all different age demographics and cultural backgrounds. Only Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong can tread the waters of his talent and his ever growing legend, which was propelled by his revolutionary style. The Bebop revolution would have been a real yawner without notable Dizzy Gillespie tracks and stunning collaborations with top artists from the time period. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The birth of Bebop music was built on a similar evolutionary process that has taken over many different art forms since the beginning of human history. There was a yearning for change and a desire to break the binding chains of the standard New Orleans jazz, Dixieland, and Swing music (Aycock, 1997). In the 1940 s Dizzy Gillespie and a legion of young and talented musicians went to war against traditional jazz music and forged a new modern landscape of immense record sales, popularity and fame. The creation of Bebop catered to the would be gods of jazz, because their talent rose to the top. Musical characteristics of Bebop shifted away from simple melody variations and moved towards intense improvisation and difficult harmonic progressions (Horricks, 1984). There was an air of confidence brewing amongst the young innovators and a sense of pride in maintaining their dominance. Dizzy Gillespie said this about the subject, There were some who couldn t blow at all but would take six or seven choruses to prove it. More than 50 years after The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed, African Americans are still treated differently from their white peers. While some people believe that African American equality was solved with the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States of America, this is not correct. Ever since the election of President Barack Obama, unarmed African Americans are still being murdered by their American peers, causing the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement was formed after Trayvon Martin, a young black male, was murdered by George Zimmerman. While the 21st century is here, African American racial inequalities are still a major problem. On March 15, 1965, former President, Lyndon B. Johnson, gave a speech, We Shall Overcome in Washington, DC after the violent march in Selma, Alabama. This speech was Lyndon B. Johnson s most memorable speech because he spoke about getting congress to ban racial discrimination against African American s in the voting polls. While voting is now open to people of all races, racism is still very alive in the United States. How does the development over time of the main theories in pragmatics show a greater understanding of language use? Introduction First of all, what do we understand with meaning? What is it? Meaning seems like a very straightforward concept but it is very obscure indeed. As human beings we are designed to acquire meaning from the world, it allows us make a conceptualization of the world. It is the most important feature of language, as the main purpose of language is to communicate with each other, in other words, to know what we mean . This looks quite straightforward and obvious as I have mentioned before, but what makes meaning so hard to understand is the little consciousness that we have of the knowledge and principles that govern our communicative ability that make us humans. Nothing is lost when playing sports not traditionally meant for a particular race or gender. When women decide to participate in sports traditionally for men such as bodybuilding, they risk the chance of being socially stereotyped as lesbians, or simply viewed as less feminine then say women figure skaters. For example, Venus Williams is seen as criticized for being very masculine in build and judged on that by her performance. The media has commented on how well she plays, and has compared her to men in her sport. She receives fewer endorsements than many other tennis players do because of her looks (but mainly due to her race). Men place themselves in the same situation when they chose to perform/participate in traditional female sports like field hockey, socially stereotyped as gay or less masculine than hockey players. There has been a change in the way certain gender sports were viewed when women/men attempted to challenge the boundaries. Gymnastics for example began as an all male sport.
