The Past
(‘ed’ pronunciation)
Regular verbs in the past form end in ‘ed’, e.g. “I talked to him yesterday”.
There are three different ways to pronounce the ‘ed’ at the end of a verb.
1. Verbs such as need, end, test and part take the ‘id’ pronunciation in the past
form.
2. Verbs such as called, loved and remembered take the ‘d’ pronunciation in the
past form.
3. Verbs such as help, look and kiss take the ‘t’ pronunciation in the past form.
1. Past forms that end with the ‘id’ sound
When the verb root ends in ‘t’ or ‘d’, we pronounce the ‘ed’ as ‘id’.
For example;
Want – wanted
Test – tested
End – ended
Decide - decided
2. Past forms that end with the ‘d’ sound
When the verb root ends in a vowel or a voiced consonant, we
pronounce the ‘ed’ as ‘d’.
For example;
Call – called
Love – loved
Play – played
Try - tried
3. Past forms that end with the ‘t’ sound
When the verb root ends with an unvoiced consonant, we pronounce
the ‘ed’ as ‘t’.
Help – helped
Look – looked
Kiss - kissed
Fix - fixed
When I was younger, I studied photography at university. I loved
studying an arts-based course and really enjoyed my time at university.
In the second year of my course, I travelled to Barcelona to visit my
friends who were on exchange there. I was really impressed by the city
and decided that I wanted to have the same experience. So the
following year I spent a semester in Barcelona. I lived with three other
English students and we all had a great time there.
