Parkinson's disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that causes tremors, muscle rigidity, and slow movement. It results from the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain. Common symptoms include tremors, stiff muscles, slow movement, impaired facial expressions and speech, and poor balance. The exact causes are unknown, but it involves low dopamine levels. While there is no cure, treatment aims to manage symptoms through drugs or surgery. Adopting a Mediterranean diet may provide some protection, but more research is needed on prevention.

2. WHAT IS PARKINSON’S DISEASE
a progressive disease of the nervous system
marked by tremor, muscular rigidity, and slow,
imprecise movement, chiefly affecting middleaged and elderly people. It is associated with
degeneration of the basal ganglia of the brain
and a deficiency of the neurotransmitter
dopamine

3. SYMPTOMS
• Tremor, or shaking, often in a hand, arm, or
leg.
• Stiff muscles (rigidity) and aching muscles.
• Slow, limited movement (bradykinesia),
• Weakness of face and throat muscles
• Difficulty with walking (gait disturbance) and
balance (postural instability).

4. CAUSE
• Low levels of dopamine, a brain chemical
(neurotransmitter) involved in controlling movement,
cause symptoms of Parkinson's disease. The shortage
of this brain chemical occurs when nerve cells in a
part of the brain (substantia nigra) that produces
dopamine fail and deteriorate. The exact cause of
this deterioration is not known.

5. TREATMENT OVERVIEW
• No known treatment can stop or reverse the
breakdown of nerve cells that
causes Parkinson's disease. But drugs can
relieve many symptoms of the disease. Surgery
also can be effective in a small number of
people to treat symptoms of
Parkinson's disease.

6. PREVENTION
• There is no known way to prevent Parkinson's
disease.
• Research has shown that people who eat more fruits
and vegetables, high-fiber foods, fish, and omega-3
rich oils (sometimes known as the Mediterranean
diet) and who eat less red meat and dairy may
have some protection against Parkinson's disease.
But the reason for this is still being studied
