Emile Durkheim Social Facts Examples
According to Emile Durkheim, a social fact is a manner of acting, thinking and feeling engaged
by individuals because and on condition that other members of the social group are also
engaged in the same thing. He said that social facts exist outside human consciousness because
it is external, objective and inherited. It is not in the mind of the person, it is in the
environment. Social facts also have a coercive power that can have a causal influence. We often
realize and be aware of the social fact if we stay away from them, resist or contradict because we
are usually unaware of all the social facts. Social facts do not necessarily require social
institutions or organizations for it to be recognized as a social fact because there are social facts
that are not institutional facts. Social facts cannot be defined by their universality for it can only
be defined in a collective aspect because it is practiced by the community, creating a collective
action, making it social. Lastly, according to him, in a holistic perspective, social facts... Show more

Searle defined brute facts as facts that exist independent of us. They are objects that are independent
of human environment. Example would be mountains, rivers, pebbles, etc. Institutional facts
however are facts that are greatly dependent on human environment or institutions for its existence.
Example of this is the government. We constantly recognize the importance and purpose of the
government because of its function. With out human institutions, the government will just be a
system. Even the thought of it of being a system is highly dependent on us. Aside from the brute
and institutional facts, Searle made another distinction in his article, the regulative and the
constitutive rules. Regulative rules regulate existing activities while constitutive rules constitute a
certain thing and are responsible for the creation of a certain

The Giant Pacific Octopus
The Giant Pacific Octopus
This paper is about octopus dofleni, which is a bottom dwelling octopus that lives on coasts of the
pacific ocean, from Northern Japan to California. This essay will provide a brief overview of its
life, habits and other characteristics of this, intelligent and creative invertebrate and member of the
Octopodidae family.
The life of the pacific giant may begin at any time of the year. The mating season however tends to
peak in the month of December, with most of their eggs being laid in April and May.
Octopuses reproduction is sexual and takes place in the somewhat shallow depths of 25 100m and
can last hours. The fertilization process begins with the male octopus, he uses his third right tentacle
which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All octopuses have the ability to shoot out a jet of purple or blackish ink like fluid from under
their eyes, in order to perform a disappearing act when they feel threatened. The octopus can
shoot out several blotches of this fluid before the fluid sac is emptied. This trick is not always an
option, the ink is actually toxic to the octopus, and if shot in a confined area, the octopus will
become sick or even die.
Octopuses have fairly good eyes, in fact they are comparable to ours in clarity. The eyes of the
octopus differ from ours, in the aspect that they focus by moving in, and out while the human
eye works by changing the shape and size of the lens itself. The octopus also posseses the most
advanced brain of all invertebrates, with both short, and long term memories. This allows the
octopus to learn in much the same way as humans, through trial and error. When an octopus learns
a lesson it remembers and puts its knowledge to use in the future. The octopus has eight arms,
with 250 suckers on each arm for a total of 2000 suckers on their body. These suckers are very
sensitive to touch, in fact, the octopus can differentiate between different objects just as well with
their suckers as they can with their eyes. Some species have particular suckers that are larger than

Horniman Horticulture Case
Case #9:
HORNIMAN HORTICULTURE
Synopsis and Objectives
This case captures the problems concerning cash flow and working capital management typical of
small, growing businesses. At the end of 2005, Bob and Maggie Brown have completed their third
year of operating Horniman Horticulture, a $1 million revenue woody shrub nursery in central
Virginia. While experiencing booming demand and improving margins, the Browns are puzzled by
their plummeting cash balance. The case highlights the difference between cash flow and
accounting profits, as well as the common negative effects of growth on cash flow. It also provides
a forum for instilling appreciation for the relevance of free cash flow to business owners and
managers, introducing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
b. Reduce investment Improve receivable collection time. Horniman is well above industry norms.
One can question the wisdom of growing the small nursery business, which appears to require
generous financing terms. Improve inventory days. This is part of Horniman s business; it is
unclear whether the inventory can be improved, particularly if they are moving to more mature
plants. The analysis to make this trade off is similar to that of the payables policy. One would
divide the expected margin gain by the increase in inventory levels to compute a marginal return
on capital. One additional level of concern is the substantial additional risk associated with
increasing inventory when facing uncertainty with respect to the effects of interest rates and
adverse weather. Reduce investment in net fixed assets. Horniman already seems to be operating
efficiently. NFA turnover has increased strongly over the past year; in fact, there is valid concern
that capital expenditures are going to need to increase going forward. c. Increase business
financing Debt or equity financing. With annual free cash flow reaching levels of в€’$278,000, the
business is burning a lot of cash. One should expect that if nothing is done to the business model,
debt requirements will become larger and larger. It is unclear whether Maggie is interested in
leveraging the business and risking possible default with an adverse weather event.

Encounters with Death in The Masque of Red Death Essays
Encounters with Death in The Masque of Red Death
After reading Edgar Allan Poe s The Masque of Red Death (317 22), the reader can only conclude
that death is the theme once again in another thrilling horror tale. Other critics such as Patricia H.
Wheat, view this tale as a battle between life and death (51 56). Yet, Leonard Cassuto brings an
interesting theory to this tale According to the narrator s own account, no one survives the Red
Death. The only one who(lives) is Death. The narrator must be death himself (317 20). Reflecting
back to the various critical analogies on tone, character, and allegory on The Masque of Red Death a
certain aspect of this work has yet to be defined. The plague that devastated a ... Show more content

Virgina Clemm, Poe s thirteen year old cousin who he loved dearly and eventually married, also
succumbed to a similar fate as his mother. While singing she had burst a blood vessel in her
throat, causing profuse bleeding and the coughing up of blood. She simply bled to death. Again
Poe was forced to watch helplessly and endure another Masque of Red Death. In comparison, to
better understand the probability of this affliction we should refer to Marie Bonapartes
Analytical Interpretation : Haemoptyses do not last long, either: they occur suddenly and the
scarlet blood appears, especially on the face (514). To further clarify the disease Hemoptysis
(current spelling Websters 1999ed.) as noted: The spitting of blood derived from the lungs or
bronchial tubes as a result of pulmonary or bronchial hemorrhage . Hemoptysis, particularly if it
involves a large quantity of blood or recurrent, is a frightening, potentially fatal event. Despite
systematic and intensive search, the cause of hemoptysis is not found in 30 to 40% of cases
(Beers MD, Berkow, MD 1999).
While not being able to understand the affliction that had taken away Poe s loved ones, he used his
brilliant imagination to convey how death had left an everlasting impression through his writing of
The Masque of Red Death (317 22).

Taking Care For Tip Over The Towering Stack Of Greasy...
Taking care not to tip over the towering stack of greasy plates and bowls in my bussing tub, I
turn away from the dining area and head quickly back towards the kitchen; smiling broadly to
customers as I weave in and out of the throng of loose beanie clad college kids surrounding the
buffets. Pushing my way through the swinging door, I let out a groan and drop my tub down on a
cart. It s not even eleven yet I whine to the dishkid, Matt, as I start clearing plates and tossing them
into one of the three large sinks. Matt groans in sympathy as he flings a flat of bowls out of the
washer; the resulting cloud of steam obscures his face from view and I don t catch his response.

I struggle to get back on my feet as Taylor dies from laughing. Are you okay? she asks while
giggling, an adorable little smile on her face. I m good. I m good. I keep repeating; trying to

the doorway, What happened? he asks. Taylor s giggling intensifies as she motions towards my
back, which is soaking wet and covered in bubbles. You win. I state as I turn back towards her, My

I smile and wink at her before she starts gloating. We ve been playing this game for a few months

I return back to cleaning high chairs and booster seats, all the while nursing a throbbing

How Does Margaret Atwood Establish and Develop a Dystopian...
Throughout Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid s Tale an imagined place or state in which
everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded state is
created through the use of multiple themes and narrative techniques. In a dystopia, we can usually
find a society that has become all kinds of wrong, in direct contrast to a utopia, or a perfect
society. Like many totalitarian states, the Republic of Gilead starts out as an envisioned utopia by

To the present day reader the idea of only being free in your memories is far too restricting
reinforcing the dystopian narrative. As Offred s relationship with the commander develops we
see and emergence of the idea that even in a powerless regime women can exploit their sexual
power and we become familiar with the idea of fallen women . Offred is in her room and filled
with nostalgia for the outmoded habit of falling in love; Falling in love, I said. Falling into it
which is then mirrored; Falling in love, we said; I fell for him . The underlying biblical
reference to The Fall when Adam ate the apple from the tree of knowledge in the Garden of
Eden is very prominent. We are forced to consider the idea of the fall from innocence, which is
presented as a paradox in this dystopian world as the women are not, by the terms of the bible,
innocent. However it is also a reflection of the Gilead society because biblically The Fall was
Eve s betrayal of Adam and the women who have been deemed fallen were unable to become
pregnant the ultimate betrayal of this society. The whole idea of falling is hugely passive and
gives the impression of a very powerless action. For women in present day society I believe it
would be the ultimate torment to be catapulted back in societal thinking where woman were far
less than equal as it has previously been. The repetition of biblical references strongly draws in

The Design And Aesthetic Appeal
The design and aesthetic appeal between the two models was uncanny. Patented features such as
rubber banding, in which a screen image bounces slightly when a user tries to scroll past the
bottom, were identical. Same with pinch to zoom, which allows users to manipulate image size by
pinching the thumb and forefinger together on the screen. And on and on. We look at Samsung s
record of patent infringement, among other ruthless business tactics, and explains why Apple might
win the battles but still lose the war. Samsung threatened if any claims for patent infringement were
thrown their way they would retaliate with the same charges. If Apple executives pursued a claim
against Samsung for stealing the iPhone, Samsung would come right back at them with a theft
claim of its own. The battle lines were drawn. In the months and years that followed, Apple and
Samsung would clash on a scale almost unprecedented in the business world, costing the two
companies more than a billion dollars and engendering millions of pages of legal papers, multiple
verdicts and rulings, and more hearings.
Patent infringement is unlawful and thus there is a necessary obligation to avoid it. Samsung was
found guilty on 6 of the 7 patent infringement cases and Apple was awarded 600 million dollars in
damages from Samsung for the infringement battle, however Samsung essentially won the war. The
Samsung brand had become a household name, with a huge percentage of the industry s consumers

Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale A Feminist
In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, despite actions that suggest otherwise,
Janie is neither feminist nor a role model due to her reliance on men and desperation for
independence. Throughout the novel, Janie requires the men and death to rescue her and give her
the ability to help herself. Janie s lack of feminism is represented in her passivity with men, and
in how she does not endeavor to protect herself against their abuse or oppression. Literary critic
Trudier Harris claims that Janie lacks the ability to determine her own fate. She is primarily
passive, which is anathema to feminist philosophy. Feminism is about women finding ways to

Although one could perceive Janie s actions against Logan as actions done for her individual
prosperity, they are truly rooted in her reliance on men. When attempting to leave Logan, Janie
is unable to find the courage to do so until Jody comes to her and presents her with a better
future. And after she did leave Logan, Janie hurried out of the front gate and turned south. Even
if Joe was not there waiting for her, the change was bound to do her good. (). Her decision to
take her newfound freedom and head to Jody represents the pattern of Janie waiting for others to
save her from her life. Although she insinuates that her actions are for herself, her decisions were
greatly influenced by the future promised to her by Jody. Moreover, this action that she takes for
herself is so overshadowed by Jody s considerable influence on her, it is difficult to see it as done
for anyone other than Jody and his promises. This exemplifies Janie s reliance upon men in order
make a change in her life because after she left Logan her decision about her future was rooted in
Jody s previous suggestions and promises. It also disputes the claim that her choices were her
own, and were done solely for her own well being. Another counterargument that could arise in
defense of Janie s feminism is when she stands up to Jody. Janie makes a strong move for

Rocky Shore Ecosystems Point Cartwright

Introduction:
On the 23rd of August, the three biology classes or grade 11 at Redlands College visited the rocky
shore ecosystems at Point Cartwright in Queensland. Two different types of rocky shore ecosystem
were examined, the rock pool area, and the boulder area. We first examined areas within the rock
pool area. The rock pool area has several specific features which set it apart from other rocky
shore ecosystems, including its geological makeup and position. It is made up of a flat platform of
rock pockmarked with numerous rock pools; indents in the rocks which are filled with water and

Sea anemones feed from the surrounding water by catching small micro organisms in their
tentacles. For this reason, anemones need constant water to survive which is why none were
observed in the boulder area as an area with constant water cannot be guaranteed. Sand is another
factor which is present in the boulder area, but not in the rock pools. Sea cucumbers were thriving
closer to the low tide mark in the boulder area, yet none were observed in the rock pool area. Sea
cucumbers are almost always found laying spread out across the sand, with their feeding tubes
out, browsing along the sand bed. This is the feeding habit of the sea cucumber and it would not
be able to carry out this habit without the presence of sand. It is shown time and time again by the
presence and habits of specific organisms in each area that the abiotic factors of each area affect
the ability for an organism to survive in that system.

Positive Impact Of Christopher Columbus s Discoveries
Positive Impact of Christopher Columbus s Discoveries
The world is a better place because of Christopher Columbus important discoveries in the New
World. His explorations resulted in the vast expansion of property for Europe, the exchange of
goods and cultures between countries and a change in the worldview of geography. Columbus s
explorations were the catalyst for unprecedented trade known as the Columbian Exchange, which
started the exchange of goods and ideas that would last for centuries and change the world forever.
His discoveries unearthed new perspectives and created a mix of diverse biology between Europe
and the New World. These exchanges changed the world we live in today and will continue to fuel
centuries of exploration and discoveries. The Columbian Exchange was the beginning of the
expansion of trade between the New World and Europe. The Columbian Exchange started the flow
of goods between continents that had not shared the same borders since Pangaea. Columbus
voyage, along with the many voyages that followed, disrupted much of the biological segregation
brought about by continental drift. (McNeil, 1). Journalist Charles Mann states in his research for

ANZAC Legend Assignment
History Term 4: ANZAC Research Assignment
Australia participated in of one of the greatest global wars in history, World War 1, as a part of
the Allied Forces. This war was also believed to be, at the time, the war to end all wars. It started
on the 28th of July 1914 and was triggered by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke
of Austria. On the 25th of April 1915, the British Empire sent the Australian and New Zealand
Army Corp to Gallipoli in an invasion where the young soldiers were essentially led on a suicide
mission. They were outnumbered. The campaign ended in a gruesome and horrific massacre of the
ANZAC troops. The battle between Australia and Turkey on the Gallipoli Campaign during World
War 1 is often glorified in the recognition of the ANZAC s excessive qualities such as courage and
endurance; which is now known as the ANZAC Legend. However, it is undeniable that the reality
of how the ANZAC legend was altered through propaganda, exaggeration and misunderstanding to
portray a successful campaign.
The fact that the ANZAC Legend was highly exaggerated is not often debated for the purpose of
attempting to convince citizens that the deaths of the soldiers who fought in the Gallipoli
Campaign were not in vain. we need to scrape off the barnacles and make sure the
commemorations are actually about the soldiers and the tragedy of what they endured (Payne,
2015). Many of the legendary actions taken by ANZAC soldiers have been overstated so that the

ABSTRACT
Nowadays, renewable energy resources play an important role in replacing conventional fossil fuel
energy resources. Photovoltaic energy is one of the very promising renewable energy resources
which grew rapidly in the past few years. Photovoltaics has one major problem and which is that
with the variation of the operating conditions of the array, the voltage at which maximum power
can be obtained from it also changes. In the thesis, a PV model is used to simulate actual PV arrays
behavior, and then a Maximum Power Point tracking method and wind energy system using Feed
Forward Neural networks is proposed in order to control the power. Further more, the proposed feed
forward neural network technique using hybrid system is compared with the ANFIS(adaptive neuro
fuzzy interference system). Simulation results shows that the proposed feed forward neural
network maximum power point tracking method gives faster response than the ANFIS

James Weldon Johnson s Poetry
One poet, who s work has been relevant in the black community since the beginning of the
twentieth century, is that of James Weldon Johnson. Spanning the Reconstruction period and the
New Negro (Harlem) Renaissance, Johnson s work change as the time did. Yet, this does not
mean that all the poems in each era were significantly alike. The Gift to Sing and Prayer at Sunrise
are both poems the Johnson published towards the end of the reconstruction period. These poems
are related in their modes and devices used, but have different structures. Moreover both poems use
the same Black Arts patterns, but have differing messages intended for two separate groups of

Because both poems were written doing the Reconstruction, they were both forms of

poem is instructing the audience to turn to God, or a god, because that is who will give provided

Civil Courts Vs Syariah Court Case Analysis
The issue of jurisdictional conflict between the civil courts and the Syariah courts has been standing
unresolved for so many years. Notwithstanding the amendment made to Article 121(1A) of the
Federal Constitution in 1988, the battle between the two courts remains unsettled. The root cause
of this issue is the existence of a grey area between Article 121 (1) and Article 121(1A) of the
Federal Constitution after the 1988 amendment. Undoubtedly, the aim of the amendment which
created Article 121(1A) was in many ways to avoid in the future for any conflict between the
decisions of the civil courts and the Syariah courts. However, it turns to have caused even more
uncertainty, conflict and confusion in our legal system than ever was the case.

Practices that cause failure in leadership and management:
Ignoring the environment
One of the best ways to ensure failure in an organization is to manage it without regard for its
external environment, ignoring those stakeholders who play such an important role in the
organizations success or failure. To ignore the potential power possessed by the various stakeholder
groups is unwise and it often results from either ignorance or stagnation on the part of the
developing organization.
Incorrectly identifying solutions to problems
It has been a trait of managers to want to treat symptoms rather than finding the root cause of a
problem and then they wonder why the problem keeps coming back. Many times managers fail to
realize that some of the problems that occur are just minor glitches, while the rest of the lot have a
real effect on the bottom line. Successful managers are the ones who can pinpoint which problems
will have the biggest impact on the bottom line and then focus their efforts in managing solutions to
those problems.

The Ideas of the Classical Theorists, Particularly Those...
The ideas of the classical theorists, particularly those of bureaucracy and scientific management,
are generally considered as rather old fashioned and out of date, and of little relevance to work and
organisation today.
The classical school of management is thought to of originated around the turn of the current
century and dominated management thinking into the 1920 s. It had one main focus and this was on
the efficiency of work processes, either through bureaucratic management that focuses on rules and
procedures, or scientific management which concentrates on the one best way in which a job can
be done. It is now commonly considered by modern theorists that these ways of management are
outdated and not completely relevant to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However certain limitations could be said that he didn t take into account, such as if workers
sole concern is simply related to their pay then other psychological needs or the worker would
not be addressed (Brooks). As a result of this, the repetitiveness of the task with little or even no
room for experimentation or variation over long periods of time generally lead to boredom and
apathy amongst the staff. (Brooks) It was widely considered in later years that Taylor had taken his
theory to far and related to companies as mechanic structures when in fact they were co operative
communities. (Handy, C 1993) Chester Bernard was one of the first people who disagreed with
Taylor, he suggested that intact people had to be persuaded and that authority really came from the
people you led not from those above. (Handy, C 1993) A case study into this at Hawthorne plant of

Mona Lisa Analysis Essay
Fieldwork #2: Media Analysis for Gender Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa
Section I: Objective Description This study serves as a gender focused analysis of Leonardo da
Vinci s Mona Lisa. The original piece of artwork was painted with oil on a white poplar panel in
Florence, Italy around 1503 during the latter part of Leonardo da Vincis life. The artist was an
Italian Renaissance artist who had a wide variety of interests. The woman who is believed to be
depicted in the painting is Lisa Gherardini, a wife and mother of five children who married to an
older man named Francesco di Bartolomeo di Zanobi del Giocondo at the age of only fifteen. The
words Mona Lisa often translate to the words Madam Lisa . Leonardo da Vinci s painting of
Mona Lisa has a strong resemblance to the description of the Virgin Mary, which during the
Renaissance period was viewed as a representation of the ideal woman. The artist achieves a
sense of softness around Mona Lisa s eyes and mouth, portraying a kindness and calmness about
the woman. Nevertheless, this painting was also one of the first portraits to have an imaginary
background, Leonardo strategically placed this mysterious background at the woman s eye level
so that the two are related to one another. The background contains a large landscape with a very
long path, cold mountains towards the distance, and a very small bridge right above her shoulder
on the right side of the painting. Despite her very soft look, something about Mona Lisa and

The Importance Of Teaching Writing
Writing, according to the students, is a secondary in comparison to how the other skills are
thaught such as reading and listening. The students view writing in ELI a subordinate skill that is
used to practice vocabulary and grammar with limited attention put on the writing skill per se. It
is used to reinforce vocabulary items taught in the reading, practice grammatical rules, and
recompose correct sentence structure containing the topic assigned. Teachers expressed that
writing is a sub skill. Teacher E says, [i]t s a sub skill of course. It s a sub skill but they are
marked on it (D3, line172). Like teachers, students perceive writing in the same way, Banan

I think the curriculum is useful (Banan, F3, line 8). Students noticed a difference between the
workshops teaching approaches to writing, and their regular classes. Banan describes the rigid
teaching method practised by teachers saying; They tell us a topic and you have to write in a
certain way, but here we learn how to write and we learn the basics of writing (Banan, P3, line 4).
Banan describes how learning is applied in the workshops whereas in their ELI classes, learning
takes place at a minimum. For instance, even though the students take vocabulary in their
classes, they lack the skills to use the words in their writing: I originally didn t know
grammatical rules or writing principles, so the workshops helped me in that way even in level
one, they didn t used to tell us the organization of the sentence like first subject and then verb. I
never knew anything like that, so in the workshops you gave us rules in the beginning and
benefited a lot from it. Also the vocabulary, there are words in the books but we don t benefit
from them in writing, even when you write, you don t think of using them, which is the opposite
of the workshops, the words we take are varied and can use them in the writing, so it helps a lot.
(Banan, P3, line 6)
From the quote above there appears to be a lack in meeting the students needs in ELI classes.

A Brief Note On Employment Non Discrimination Act
Employment Non Discrimination Act
Researchers show that anywhere from 15% to 43% percent of LGBT have encountered some
variety of unfairness and harassment in the workplace (Center Progress, 2011). Further, 8 % to 17
% of LGBT state being passed over for employment or fired due to their sexual orientation. Ten
percent to 28 percent experienced a negative performance review or were overlooked for a
promotion due to being gay. Moreover, 7 % to 41 % of gays faced harassment, abuse, or antigay
vandalism on the job.
Transgenders persevere through high rates of employment injustice and harassment at work. In a
current national survey, an astonishing 90 % of transgender individuals depicted some harassment
or abuse on the job. Approximately half of transgender individuals also describe experiencing an
adverse employment result due to their gender identity. This entails being disregarded for
employment (44 %), getting terminated (26 %), and being denied a promotion (23 %).
Historical Background
The recommended Employment Non Discrimination Act ( Library of Congress, n.d.) would shield
private and public workers from employment unfairness by perceived or actual sexual orientation
and gender identity. Employment Non Discrimination Act is practically identical to Title VII of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which already secures workers by race, color, religion, sex, and
political origin, and additionally the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which ensures

Handmaids Tale Analysis
The Handmaid s Tale, a film based on Margaret Atwood s book depicts a dystopia, where
pollution and radiation have rendered innumerable women sterile, and the birthrates of North
America have plummeted to dangerously low levels. To make matters worse, the nation s
plummeting birth rates are blamed on its women. The United States, now renamed the Republic
of Gilead, retains power the use of piousness, purges, and violence. A Puritan theocracy, the
Republic of Gilead, with its religious trappings and rigid class, gender, and racial castes is built
around the singular desire to control reproduction. Despite this, the republic is inhabited by
characters who would not seem out of place in today s society. They plant flowers in the yard,
live in suburban houses, drink whiskey in the den and follow a far off a war on the television.
The film leaves the conditions of the war and the society vague, but this is not a political tale,
like Fahrenheit 451, but rather a feminist one. As such, the film, isolates, exaggerates and
dramatizes the systems in which women are the handmaidens of today s society in general and
men in particular. In the Republic of Gilead, children are seen as lawful possessions of wealthy,
powerful couples like the Commander and his wife. As such, women called handmaids have been
reduced to two basic functions, breeding and buying groceries. Moreover, since women are
prohibited to vote, write or read, the grocery store labels all of the products

Moral Of The Canterbury Tales
Now it is time to decide which tale in The Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, rises above the
rest. I stated at the beginning of our journey to Canterbury that I would pick the tale that is greatest
moral teaching and in entertainment value (17). After intently listening to all of your tales, one
stood out from the others. Though many of you told stories that were offensive to other pilgrims on
the trip or told stories that had little moralsignificance, I determined that there is one that most fully
fulfills the requirements that I have set forth. I have decided that the Nun s Priest s Taleteaches the
greatest moral lesson while having great entertainment value, making the Nun s Priest the winner of
our competition.
The Nun s Priest s Tale is a beast fable, an allegory that utilizes animals with human characteristic
in order to illustrate the message. The tale follows the story of Chanticleer, a beautiful rooster
whose voice was merrier than the merry organ that plays in church, (153). One day, a fox named
Russell comes into the yard and begins complementing Chanticleer on his singing talents,
persuading him to stick out his neck and sing with his eyes closed. Because Chanticleer is so
entranced by Russell s flattery, he closes his eyes and begins to sing, allowing Russell to be able
to bite his neck and run with him into the woods. The moral of the Nun s Priest s Tale is clear:
never trust a flatterer. Chanticleers capture is the result of being careless and

Marx and the Communist Manifesto
A specter is haunting Europe the specter of Communism, Karl Marx proclaims. This phantom
maybe the resolution to rid a country of greed and exploitation. Karl Marx in the collaboration with
Frederich Engels elucidates his concern of capitalism and his yearn for a communistic society in the
book, The Communist Manifesto. In this book he explains his idea of true communism. True
communism is a social order in which all citizens are equal. In communism equality means that
society is classless, moneyless, and stateless. Citizens will no longer be able to own property, inherit
money, and capitalize on their inferior. In his book Marx illustrates the essence of communism by
explicating the relationship between the antagonistic groups, addressing the objections leveled at
communism, and explaining the relationship between the proletariat and the communist. Marx
utilizes a variety of argumentative appeals to persuade readers that communism is the solution to
the wretched lives of the majority. As Marx goes about expressing his assertion, he commits
fallacies that may hinder his credibility and the effectiveness of his claim. By the end of his book
Marx declares men, women, and children of the impoverished community need to come together to
overthrow capitalism and become a socialist society of communism because communism is the
answer, communism is the future. Marx begins The Communist Manifesto by revealing the
relationship between two antagonistic groups from different social

The Word Love In The New Testament And Old Testament
Love is taken in many directions in the New Testament and Old Testament. The way God and
Jesus Christ present this emotion throughout the bible, shows a better understanding of
unconditional love to others. Love is one of the characteristics of God and an important part of
His nature. Therefore, I will bring forth explanation of how well the word Love is used from
translation to translation. My research will be coming out of the New Testament and Old
Testament, even though there are many other books I could talk about for the word love. In the
New Testament, Almost everyone knows that God so loved the world (John 3:16) and God is love
(John 4:8), and when love appears nobody can express it better than Jesus. We mainly hear about
love in the beginning of the first Corinthians ( 1 CO 13) at wedding ceremonies. As new
translation were coming out over the years, the version NIV used love as sex acts in Genesis to
express the word rather than KJV and ESV used love as knowing the feeling and NASB used
love as strong relations. In the 1 corinthians, Paul created a message saying, the love of god, the
love of jesus christ, and the love that the christian expresses in response to God s saving action in
Jesus Christ (samuel E Balentine). As I was looking into the new testament, the chapter called First
John stood out to me because majority of the words are love or something describing love. First
John was written to distinguish the differences between

A Picture Of The Shadows
A Picture of the Shadows: A Discussion of How Chiaroscuro Illustrates Remembering and
Forgetting in In the Skin of a Lion
In the novel, In the Skin of a Lion, Michael Ondaatje uses the motif of chiaroscuro, or the
relationship between light and shadow, to illustrate the themes of remembering and forgetting. A
motif is a narrative element that reoccurs throughout a narrative, an idea that has a symbolic
meaning. As described by H. Porter Abbott, it is not abstract but a concrete idea, which moulds the
theme of a literary work. The concept of chiaroscuro, or shadow play, originally comes from
painting, and is used to characterize works in which the darkness strongly contrasts with the light. In
other words, the brighter the light, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
7). He also witnesses the dark horrors of these workers dying of pneumonia or from the sulphur
in their lungs from the mills (pg. 8). This is our first glimpse through Patrick s eyes at the horrors
the working class historically faced. Even in the Countryside, where there is little light from
development, there is a lot of danger as death spreads its shadow alongside the dimmer light of
development and progress. Patrick s own father, a self taught explosives expert, is killed in a mining
accident. Here both the metaphorical light, progress and industry, and the literal light, the dynamite
explosions, cast the shadow of death onto Patrick s father, to remind the reader how many lives of
workers were sacrificed for development. No one remembers their contributions except for their
closest family members.
Despite the country shadows such as the death of Patrick s father, a clear contrast is drawn
between light and shadow in urban versus countryside environments. Patrick is seen reminiscing

The Piano Suites Diary Rodion Shchedrin Summary
The piano suites Diary composed by Rodion Shchedrin who is one of the most well known
contemporary composers and pianists in Russia, Shchedrin combines elements of Russian folklore
styles, baroque inspired polyphony and pantonality techniques. The combination of compositional
techniques has created a new musical language, present in his pianocompositions, fusing traditional
Western compositional techniques with Russian folk musical styles.
I used the score from the German publisher Schott Music. Diary, which is a set of seven
compositions. This work was written for pianist Anna Gourari. The first performance was in
Moscow on December 5, 2002. I found one commercial CD containing this suite, recorded by
Ekaterina Mechetina, in album Schedrin Shakhidi , available on Spotify for reference. As composer
suggested that it is possible to perform each piece separately, and he also mentioned attacca at each
end of the movements. In this suite, Shchedrin developed a compositional technique that
reintroduced the pitches of a single motive continuously throughout one movement, with rests as
space between phrases. This piano suite, as one of the Shchedrin s influential present piano works,
features a combination of performance elements and is attractive for both concert artists and young
age students. This repertoire ranges in medium difficulty and is filled with elements of dance, folk
music, traditional and non traditional harmonies. The use of contrasting textures and imaginative

Descriptive Writing About A Rose Garden
As the sun slowly peaked out of the horizon in Riverside, California, the scorching sun and
unbearable heat come along with it. Covering this dry city, Riverside fell into a moist, humid
atmosphere. Besides this, the day was bright and early for a hike up to the 40 acres University of

sweat continued to drip down, I wiped off most of it due to over heating of my body. Once I was

Each of these typically dark skinned lizards have evolved white skins (Figure 1) through mutation
of the MC1r gene, encoding for the Melanocortin 1 receptor protein that generates the production
of the dark pigment melanin. In each species, a different amino acid in the MC1r has been
swapped (Figure 2) resulting in the absence of the dark pigment hence the lizards bleached skin

Sexual Reproduction
The chromosomal activity following sexual reproduction plays a vital role in generating genetic
variation through the production of unique chromosome combinations. Independent assortment
occurs during meiosis when both maternal and paternal homologous pairs separate independently,
distributing chromatids from each parent to the gametes independent of each other (Mendel, 1865).
As maternal and paternal chromosomes carry different genetic information, independent assortment
produces different possible combinations of chromosome pairs. Recombination is a feature of
independent assortment, producing further new gene combinations by breaking and recombining
DNA fragments. Following this is crossing over; the exchange of genetic material during meiosis

Essay On Spanish American Independence
Spanish America s thirst for Independence dates all the way back to the 16th century, following the
French revolution s success to abolish the monarchy. South America s desire to become independent
from Spain was ignited by the French revolution and the declaration of Independence of the United
States. South American Creoles (los criollos) of the upper class led the process of Independence
of the Spanish colonies. Many historians claim the wars of Independence were a creole affair and
throughout this essay many arguments will be addressed to justify their claims, a strong case in
their favour being the leader and liberator, SimГіn BolГvar, who drove the creoles and other ethnic
origins to their quest for autonomy.
To begin, the 18th century marks the proposal of the Bourbon reforms, a series of changes which
would jeopardise the relationship between the Spanish crown and its American colonies. The term
Bourbon reforms derives from King Philip V (b. 1700 1746) and his successors plan to change the
Spanish empire for the better. In order to do so, they set out to control all aspects of trade, politics
and economy. The colonial... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the masses of Spanish Americans. Thus, Independence from Spain was awarded to many colonies

Managerial Implications

The Fish By Elizabeth Bishop
The Fish by Elizabeth Bishop is a very colorful poem filled with lots of different outcomes than
our usual expectations. The poem is very symbolic through its use color and the fish it describes.
The poem is also written in free verse, which you could relate to the nature of the fish. It is set on a
boat in the middle of the ocean, with the ocean symbolizing chaos, the nature of the poem. The fish
causes some conflict within this poem. First, the fish changes the speaker s expectation of how
events will occur. We can infer that the speaker did not find catching the fish as fulfilling as she
thought she would have. Based on the long debating and dangling of the fish, it is obvious that the
speaker feels at least moderately conflicted about

Gettysburg A Turning Point Dbq Analysis
It is 1863 and people are wondering who will win the war? The war had gone on for two years
and the Confederates were marching towards Pennsylvania. Lincoln reacted by making George
Meade a General and sending Union soldiers to Gettysburg to take all the high ground. This lead to
the battle of Gettysburg the bloodiest battle in the civil war. The Battle of Gettysburglead to the
downfall of the Confederacy because the confederacy lost many soldiers, Gettysburg was the last
battle in the North, and Robert E. Leewas losing hope.
The Confederacy lost many soldiers at Gettysburg. After the battle the Confederates lost 30% to
34% of their army while the north lost 27%. (Doc B) Robert E. Lee also tells us in a letter to
Jefferson Davis that they have lost a large amount of important Generals General Barksdale is
killed Generals Garnett and Armistead are missing.... Generals Pender and Trimble are wounded in
the leg, General Hood in the arm, and General Heth slightly in the head. (Doc C) This evidence
helps prove that Gettysburg was a turning point because it shows that the Confederacy suffered
more casualties than the North. Many of those casualties were very valuable to their army because
an army cant function very well without Generals.

The Allegory Of Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler
Sophie Carr Western Civ November 22, 2015 The Allegory of Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler The
decline of the Weimar Republic marked a time of great concern over how post war Germany
would shed its authoritarian past and reinvent itself. Feasibly, no other film from this era could
so adeptly capture the history of immediate postwar Germany than Fritz Lang s Dr. Mabuse, The
Gambler. Fritz Lang s melodramatic tale of an elusive and depraved gambler, or player as it s
literally translated, is actually an allegory for a corrupt and economically unstable Germany that
would soon give rise to fascism. Though Lang, a fervent anti fascist, would find great success in
cinematically portraying despotism in his cult classic Metropolis (1927), Dr. Mabuse, The
Gambler was the film that was the more directly connected to a recovering Germany. Dr.
Mabuse is an allegory for the political and economic strife that took hold Weimar Germany. The
film is of a man who plays a slick gambler, an esteemed physician, and a magician. He s a player
in most, if not all, senses of the word. Dr. Mabuse s character is also described as being literally
hypnotic, He [Lang] shows individuals being transformed into a state of total submission as well
as a whole audience succumbing to an exercise in mass suggestion. 1 Only the state prosecutor,
Norbert von Wenk, is capable of resisting Mabuse s powers, but Mabuse s striking supernatural
powers and his loyal gang of felons thwart his investigation.

The Affordable Care Act Of Congress
The affordable care act was passed into law by congress and the president in 2010. This plan was
established to help all individuals obtain health insurance, regardless of having a pre existing
condition through the government marketplace as an affordable amount, or if you did not meet
the set standards, was offered a state based health care coverage (HHS, 2015). Those individuals
who did not have qualified medical coverage for the majority of the taxyear, they would be

Under the ACA for individuals, they are able to select their health care coverage either through their
employer, through the government, by finding a plan on their own, or have no insurance coverage
at all and face the tax penalty, year after year that the taxpayer goes without coverage. There are
actually ways that the individual can benefit from when filing their taxes. An option for
selecting health care coverage is through the government s website exchange, this is referenced
to the Premium tax credit. Under this credit as defined in 26 C.F.R. В§ 1.36B 1 , individuals are
able to select their own health care coverage with the plans being labeled as on silver, bronze,
gold, or platinum plans, and gives the taxpayer a refund on the premium amount. If a taxpayer
plans on selecting one of these, the government will give you a tax break if your income places
you under the 400% of the poverty level (Obamacare, 2015). Under ACA, employers are now
faced with a challenge of their own, if they have 50 or more employees they are now required to
offer healthcare coverage to their full time employees, and if they do not they will be faced to pay
a tax penalty. With smaller employers they would be offered a tax break on offering their
employees coverage through the government marketplace. Another way that the ACA changed the
tax on other companies is

Why I Want To Be A Pediatrician
My current career aspirations are I would love to ultimately have a career as a pediatrician. The
reason why I would choose to have a career as a pediatrician is because this particular profession
combines some of my favorite things; helping others, working with children, and it s within the
science/medical field so I believe that this will be a wonderful fit for me. My passion for the
sciences grew while I was attending middle school and I still have a strong passion to this day.
Throughout my education career so far, I have participated with many organization within and
without school that include, Interact, Norton Shores Teen Advisory Board, United Way Youth
board, Choir Executive Board, Student Government, and couple more. One of the things that this
organizations have in common is that they are all groups do things that help benefit certain
people. While I participated with these organizations I also volunteered my time, held a part time
job, and went to school as well. If I did not care about and believe what I was doing, then I would
not have joined all these different organizations. One of the benefits of joining a variety of
organizations is that you get a sense of fulfillment knowing that you helped many people out of the
kindness of your heart.
As of now, for me specifically becoming a pediatrician will take a minimum of eleven years
because I will have to do about four years of college to receive a Bachelor s degree plus four years
of medical school to get a DO

Approaching the second decade of the 21st century provides a fresh opportunity to think about
kinds of possible management. In this regard, the area of human resource management (HRM) has
become even more important to business, policymaking, and nations, including in the
economically dynamic Asia Pacific region. Most of the Asian economies had rapid growth rates
for the past two to three decades, although uneven from year to year, and were then hit by the
1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Interestingly, now the very same HRM practices formerly seen as

Thus, in best practice thinking, a universal prescription is preferred (Boxall Purcell, 2003, p. 61).
One strand in the area is the development of lists of best practices. Among the most famous are
those of Pfeffer (1994, 1998), whose list of 16 (of relevance here included employment security,
selectivity in selection, promotion from within, high pay, incentive pay, wage compression, and
training and skill development), later narrowed to seven (of relevance here were employment
security, selective and sophisticated hiring, high compensation contingent on performance,
extensive training and development, reduction of status differentials, and sharing information self
managed teams/teamworking; see overviews of other lists in Boxall Purcell, 2003; Redman
Wilkinson, 2006). Some take a broad definition that best practices are those that can add value to
the business. Others are more specific and pinpoint certain practices in particular situations. For
others, they are those present in successful and/or high profile companies. Indeed, research on best
practices including collective issues of work organization and employee voice is rare (Boxall
Purcell, 2003).
Recent studies (Tables 21.1 sorted by author and 21.2 by practice) typically include comprehensive
employee recruitment procedures, incentive compensation, performance management systems,

Rhetorical Analysis Of Elle Woods
Elle Woods was the typical sorority girl while at CULA she loved shopping; her friends; and her
boyfriend, Warner. With her father s money on her side, Elle never prioritized her education or
working. She assumed her future held a marriage to Warner and life as a trophy wife; but when
Warner declares Elle a hindrance to his goals of graduating from Harvard University, she
becomes determined to do the same. Realizing no amount of money could buy admission to
Harvard, Elle works valiantly toward her goal and is accepted. As the movie comes to a close,
the scene shifts to three years later with Elle addressing her classmates as she graduates alongside
Warner. Though she does not speak excessively, Elle speaks of the passion, perseverance, and
determination necessary for success. In her short, yet effective speech; Elle uses ethos and pathos
to encourage her classmates to go forth in their law careers with courage and faith, and reminds
them to never accept people as they appear on the surface.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Elle begins her oration by using ethos to validate her credibility with her audience. Not only
does her presence on stage deem her words worthy, but her acknowledgement of the three years
she and her peers have spent at Harvard reaffirm this. Elle refers to Aristotle having said, the law
is reason free from passion not to support his point but to illustrate to her peers that passion is a
key ingredient for being a successful attorney. By using this quote, Elle depicts her playful,
investigative personality to her peers, and reminds them of her untraditional experience at the
University. Since few thought she belonged in law school, her words illustrate her passion and
drive to overcome societal norms and lend more credibility to her

Birthing Cermonies Of Other Cultures Essay
Birthing Cermonies of Other Cultures
The birthing ceremonies of the Indian culture has a lot of different aspects then the American
culture does. I guess that is why they are different cultures. All cultures have different views on
different things such as religion, but they also share the same as well for example every culture has
some form of the family. This is what helps most cultures understand other cultures. In the Indian
culture their view of bringing a child into the world is much different then the American culture s
view.

of times they add Herb s and leaves to the bath which helps them relax as well as supply them

time frame is the baby integration into the family.
When the child is born they kill a sheep and there is a little fiesta just for the family. The neighbors

Essay on President Wilson and the Treaty of Versailles
President Wilson and the Treaty of Versailles
President Wilson s righteous views of his efforts were so strong that not even the advice and urging
of his closest confidants could sway his stance. While it is true that opposition forces helped to
defeat the treaty, it was ultimately Wilson s stubbornness that led to its defeat in the Senate.
There were many factors that led to the initial outbreak of World War I in Europe. A constant
struggle to gain the upper hand in the balance of power existed, and it resulted in the formation of
many alliances between European nations. For the most part, these agreements stipulated that the
nations would aid one another if one of them were to be attacked by an enemy. Eventually two

The United States, tied to British trade, and supporters of their system of democracy, broke their
official neutrality policy that dated back to the days of George Washington and joined the Allied
powers. U.S. support would prove to be enough of a boost to strike down the Central Powers attack,
and it also signaled America s entrance into the peace negotiations that followed.
During a speech to Congress while the war was still going on, President Woodrow Wilson
introduced his Fourteen Points, which called for a new Europe and a peaceful world. Ideas
expressed in the speech included a policy of open diplomacy with no secret treaties, freedom of
the seas, removal of tariffs, arms reduction, fair colonial policies, as well as several boundary
changes in Europe. But most important of all was point fourteen. This item called for a general
association of nations for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence
and territorial integrity to great and small states alike. This association, which would come to be
known as the League of Nations, was conceived by the idealistic Wilson to keep the peace after
the war and to promote open diplomacy between countries of varying types of size and power. In
order to maintain peace the league was to be given the authority to impose economic sanctions

Video Games, My Father And Mother
I was made who I am by Video Games, My Father and Mother. When I was a lot younger my
father bought me my first gaming console. It was a PlayStation One by Sony Entertainment. I
remember playing an abundance of different games, I mostly played Tekken games and early
games in the Ace Combat series. I had neighbors that came over to my house to play on it. I used
to think they were my friends, but in reality they were at a minimum 3 years older than me and
only used me to play my games. I didn t, and don t mind though, they were nice to me.
After about a year playing on the PS, Sony released the PS2 (PlayStation Two). I wanted one so
bad, every time I would see one in the store I asked for it until eventually my persistence paid off.
My Dad bought me a PS2, the first model I had was the original Fat Version . I had immense fun
playing new genre of games as well as updated versions of the older games I played. I would got
trouble more than once for staying up really late, I would never learn though as I still stay up

my parents computer. For the life of me I can t remember the names of the games I played; all that
s left is some vague images left in my mind.

Sickle Cell Disease ( Ocd )
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited autosomal recessive condition that causes the red blood
cells (RBCs) to be crescent shaped. Sickle cell disease occurs in 1 out of every 400 African
Americans births (Field, et al 2009). And according to the Centers of Disease Prevention and
Control (CDC), 1 out of 13 African American babies are born with the sickle cell trait (SCT). At
the same time SCD is present in only 1 out of 300 Caucasian babies, thus it is considered to be one
of the most prevalent genetic health disparities affecting people of African, Indian, Hispanic, and
Mediterranean decent (Kotch, et al 2000).
In order for a person to have this disease, both parents have to carry the Sickle Cell Trait. This
trait is given to the parents by their parents in which one of them has the sickle cell gene S and
the other has the normal A gene. Children are diagnosed with SCD as early as 4 months old and
accurately diagnosed by the age of 6 months old.
Normal RBCs are disc shaped in which they are able to easily travel throughout the body, especially
through the tiniest blood vessels. However, with sickled shaped RBCs, they clump together while
flowing through these particularly small vessels, which causes the loss of oxygen throughout the
tissues and organs. This monogenetic disease is caused by a point mutation in the ОІ globin gene
that creates abnormal Hemoglobin S (HbS). There are five different haplotypes for SCD that are
classified by their geographical region

  • 2. Emile Durkheim Social Facts Examples According to Emile Durkheim, a social fact is a manner of acting, thinking and feeling engaged by individuals because and on condition that other members of the social group are also engaged in the same thing. He said that social facts exist outside human consciousness because it is external, objective and inherited. It is not in the mind of the person, it is in the environment. Social facts also have a coercive power that can have a causal influence. We often realize and be aware of the social fact if we stay away from them, resist or contradict because we are usually unaware of all the social facts. Social facts do not necessarily require social institutions or organizations for it to be recognized as a social fact because there are social facts that are not institutional facts. Social facts cannot be defined by their universality for it can only be defined in a collective aspect because it is practiced by the community, creating a collective action, making it social. Lastly, according to him, in a holistic perspective, social facts... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Searle defined brute facts as facts that exist independent of us. They are objects that are independent of human environment. Example would be mountains, rivers, pebbles, etc. Institutional facts however are facts that are greatly dependent on human environment or institutions for its existence. Example of this is the government. We constantly recognize the importance and purpose of the government because of its function. With out human institutions, the government will just be a system. Even the thought of it of being a system is highly dependent on us. Aside from the brute and institutional facts, Searle made another distinction in his article, the regulative and the constitutive rules. Regulative rules regulate existing activities while constitutive rules constitute a certain thing and are responsible for the creation of a certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Giant Pacific Octopus The Giant Pacific Octopus This paper is about octopus dofleni, which is a bottom dwelling octopus that lives on coasts of the pacific ocean, from Northern Japan to California. This essay will provide a brief overview of its life, habits and other characteristics of this, intelligent and creative invertebrate and member of the Octopodidae family. The life of the pacific giant may begin at any time of the year. The mating season however tends to peak in the month of December, with most of their eggs being laid in April and May. Octopuses reproduction is sexual and takes place in the somewhat shallow depths of 25 100m and can last hours. The fertilization process begins with the male octopus, he uses his third right tentacle which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All octopuses have the ability to shoot out a jet of purple or blackish ink like fluid from under their eyes, in order to perform a disappearing act when they feel threatened. The octopus can shoot out several blotches of this fluid before the fluid sac is emptied. This trick is not always an option, the ink is actually toxic to the octopus, and if shot in a confined area, the octopus will become sick or even die. Octopuses have fairly good eyes, in fact they are comparable to ours in clarity. The eyes of the octopus differ from ours, in the aspect that they focus by moving in, and out while the human eye works by changing the shape and size of the lens itself. The octopus also posseses the most advanced brain of all invertebrates, with both short, and long term memories. This allows the octopus to learn in much the same way as humans, through trial and error. When an octopus learns a lesson it remembers and puts its knowledge to use in the future. The octopus has eight arms, with 250 suckers on each arm for a total of 2000 suckers on their body. These suckers are very sensitive to touch, in fact, the octopus can differentiate between different objects just as well with their suckers as they can with their eyes. Some species have particular suckers that are larger than the rest This is to aid in reproduction. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Horniman Horticulture Case Case #9: HORNIMAN HORTICULTURE Synopsis and Objectives This case captures the problems concerning cash flow and working capital management typical of small, growing businesses. At the end of 2005, Bob and Maggie Brown have completed their third year of operating Horniman Horticulture, a $1 million revenue woody shrub nursery in central Virginia. While experiencing booming demand and improving margins, the Browns are puzzled by their plummeting cash balance. The case highlights the difference between cash flow and accounting profits, as well as the common negative effects of growth on cash flow. It also provides a forum for instilling appreciation for the relevance of free cash flow to business owners and managers, introducing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... b. Reduce investment Improve receivable collection time. Horniman is well above industry norms. One can question the wisdom of growing the small nursery business, which appears to require generous financing terms. Improve inventory days. This is part of Horniman s business; it is unclear whether the inventory can be improved, particularly if they are moving to more mature plants. The analysis to make this trade off is similar to that of the payables policy. One would divide the expected margin gain by the increase in inventory levels to compute a marginal return on capital. One additional level of concern is the substantial additional risk associated with increasing inventory when facing uncertainty with respect to the effects of interest rates and adverse weather. Reduce investment in net fixed assets. Horniman already seems to be operating efficiently. NFA turnover has increased strongly over the past year; in fact, there is valid concern that capital expenditures are going to need to increase going forward. c. Increase business financing Debt or equity financing. With annual free cash flow reaching levels of в€’$278,000, the business is burning a lot of cash. One should expect that if nothing is done to the business model, debt requirements will become larger and larger. It is unclear whether Maggie is interested in leveraging the business and risking possible default with an adverse weather event. HORNIMAN HORTICULTURE Projected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Encounters with Death in The Masque of Red Death Essays Encounters with Death in The Masque of Red Death After reading Edgar Allan Poe s The Masque of Red Death (317 22), the reader can only conclude that death is the theme once again in another thrilling horror tale. Other critics such as Patricia H. Wheat, view this tale as a battle between life and death (51 56). Yet, Leonard Cassuto brings an interesting theory to this tale According to the narrator s own account, no one survives the Red Death. The only one who(lives) is Death. The narrator must be death himself (317 20). Reflecting back to the various critical analogies on tone, character, and allegory on The Masque of Red Death a certain aspect of this work has yet to be defined. The plague that devastated a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Virgina Clemm, Poe s thirteen year old cousin who he loved dearly and eventually married, also succumbed to a similar fate as his mother. While singing she had burst a blood vessel in her throat, causing profuse bleeding and the coughing up of blood. She simply bled to death. Again Poe was forced to watch helplessly and endure another Masque of Red Death. In comparison, to better understand the probability of this affliction we should refer to Marie Bonapartes Analytical Interpretation : Haemoptyses do not last long, either: they occur suddenly and the scarlet blood appears, especially on the face (514). To further clarify the disease Hemoptysis (current spelling Websters 1999ed.) as noted: The spitting of blood derived from the lungs or bronchial tubes as a result of pulmonary or bronchial hemorrhage . Hemoptysis, particularly if it involves a large quantity of blood or recurrent, is a frightening, potentially fatal event. Despite systematic and intensive search, the cause of hemoptysis is not found in 30 to 40% of cases (Beers MD, Berkow, MD 1999). While not being able to understand the affliction that had taken away Poe s loved ones, he used his brilliant imagination to convey how death had left an everlasting impression through his writing of The Masque of Red Death (317 22). • 6. Taking Care For Tip Over The Towering Stack Of Greasy... Taking care not to tip over the towering stack of greasy plates and bowls in my bussing tub, I turn away from the dining area and head quickly back towards the kitchen; smiling broadly to customers as I weave in and out of the throng of loose beanie clad college kids surrounding the buffets. Pushing my way through the swinging door, I let out a groan and drop my tub down on a cart. It s not even eleven yet I whine to the dishkid, Matt, as I start clearing plates and tossing them into one of the three large sinks. Matt groans in sympathy as he flings a flat of bowls out of the washer; the resulting cloud of steam obscures his face from view and I don t catch his response. Throwing the last, frosting crusted, plate into the greasy dish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I struggle to get back on my feet as Taylor dies from laughing. Are you okay? she asks while giggling, an adorable little smile on her face. I m good. I m good. I keep repeating; trying to regain a cool persona. I walk it off while rubbing the back of my head. Matt pops his head out of the doorway, What happened? he asks. Taylor s giggling intensifies as she motions towards my back, which is soaking wet and covered in bubbles. You win. I state as I turn back towards her, My hat touched the floor. I smile and wink at her before she starts gloating. We ve been playing this game for a few months now, and tonight the prize is a shake after work paid for by the loser. In this case, the loser is me. I return back to cleaning high chairs and booster seats, all the while nursing a throbbing headache and semi wounded ego. I finish closing the front and start helping Taylor close down her area. We awkwardly struggle to place the stubborn saran wrap inside the salad line as Hannah, our new inexperienced manager, walks up and says Hey, you guys are free to go as soon as you finish up. Yessssssss! Taylor exclaims. We clock out and sit in the booth closest to the kitchen to wait for Bridger and Dylan who are helping Matt close dish. Police Blac Police Drones War zone, which is accounted for a high sense of cruelty make drones technology is the only game in town in fighting suspected terrorism and becoming an attractive and inexpensive preference for military service (Wall, 2013). It improved the success rate of high risk missions including behind the lines surveillance that also reduced the cost and human casualities of war to a greater extent (Black, 2013). Nowadays, drones equipped with non lethal weapon systems such as pepper spray, painting balls, and plastic bullets are utilized by law enforcement agencies for crowd control (Stelmack, 2015). Police drones can accomplish this with features such as cameras and facial recognition software that would possibly locate them (Alderton,2015). We, as a consulting firm consider that police departments intend to seek permission for using drones in assisting them to fight crime and make use of drones to patrol residential neighborhoods (Leber, 2013). • 8. How Does Margaret Atwood Establish and Develop a Dystopian... Throughout Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid s Tale an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded state is created through the use of multiple themes and narrative techniques. In a dystopia, we can usually find a society that has become all kinds of wrong, in direct contrast to a utopia, or a perfect society. Like many totalitarian states, the Republic of Gilead starts out as an envisioned utopia by a select few: a remade world where lower class women are given the opportunity interact with upper class couples in order to provide them with children, and the human race can feel confident about producing future generations with the potential to see past divisions of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To the present day reader the idea of only being free in your memories is far too restricting reinforcing the dystopian narrative. As Offred s relationship with the commander develops we see and emergence of the idea that even in a powerless regime women can exploit their sexual power and we become familiar with the idea of fallen women . Offred is in her room and filled with nostalgia for the outmoded habit of falling in love; Falling in love, I said. Falling into it which is then mirrored; Falling in love, we said; I fell for him . The underlying biblical reference to The Fall when Adam ate the apple from the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden is very prominent. We are forced to consider the idea of the fall from innocence, which is presented as a paradox in this dystopian world as the women are not, by the terms of the bible, innocent. However it is also a reflection of the Gilead society because biblically The Fall was Eve s betrayal of Adam and the women who have been deemed fallen were unable to become pregnant the ultimate betrayal of this society. The whole idea of falling is hugely passive and gives the impression of a very powerless action. For women in present day society I believe it would be the ultimate torment to be catapulted back in societal thinking where woman were far less than equal as it has previously been. The repetition of biblical references strongly draws in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Design And Aesthetic Appeal The design and aesthetic appeal between the two models was uncanny. Patented features such as rubber banding, in which a screen image bounces slightly when a user tries to scroll past the bottom, were identical. Same with pinch to zoom, which allows users to manipulate image size by pinching the thumb and forefinger together on the screen. And on and on. We look at Samsung s record of patent infringement, among other ruthless business tactics, and explains why Apple might win the battles but still lose the war. Samsung threatened if any claims for patent infringement were thrown their way they would retaliate with the same charges. If Apple executives pursued a claim against Samsung for stealing the iPhone, Samsung would come right back at them with a theft claim of its own. The battle lines were drawn. Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale A Feminist In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, despite actions that suggest otherwise, Janie is neither feminist nor a role model due to her reliance on men and desperation for independence. Throughout the novel, Janie requires the men and death to rescue her and give her the ability to help herself. Janie s lack of feminism is represented in her passivity with men, and in how she does not endeavor to protect herself against their abuse or oppression. Literary critic Trudier Harris claims that Janie lacks the ability to determine her own fate. She is primarily passive, which is anathema to feminist philosophy. Although one could perceive Janie s actions against Logan as actions done for her individual prosperity, they are truly rooted in her reliance on men. When attempting to leave Logan, Janie is unable to find the courage to do so until Jody comes to her and presents her with a better future. And after she did leave Logan, Janie hurried out of the front gate and turned south. Even if Joe was not there waiting for her, the change was bound to do her good. (). Her decision to take her newfound freedom and head to Jody represents the pattern of Janie waiting for others to save her from her life. Although she insinuates that her actions are for herself, her decisions were greatly influenced by the future promised to her by Jody. Moreover, this action that she takes for herself is so overshadowed by Jody s considerable influence on her, it is difficult to see it as done for anyone other than Jody and his promises. This exemplifies Janie s reliance upon men in order make a change in her life because after she left Logan her decision about her future was rooted in Jody s previous suggestions and promises. It also disputes the claim that her choices were her own, and were done solely for her own well being. Another counterargument that could arise in defense of Janie s feminism is when she stands up to Jody. Janie makes a strong move for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Two different types of rocky shore ecosystem were examined, the rock pool area, and the boulder area. We first examined areas within the rock pool area. The rock pool area has several specific features which set it apart from other rocky shore ecosystems, including its geological makeup and position. It is made up of a flat platform of rock pockmarked with numerous rock pools; indents in the rocks which are filled with water and contain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sea anemones feed from the surrounding water by catching small micro organisms in their tentacles. For this reason, anemones need constant water to survive which is why none were observed in the boulder area as an area with constant water cannot be guaranteed. Sand is another factor which is present in the boulder area, but not in the rock pools. Sea cucumbers were thriving closer to the low tide mark in the boulder area, yet none were observed in the rock pool area. Sea cucumbers are almost always found laying spread out across the sand, with their feeding tubes out, browsing along the sand bed. This is the feeding habit of the sea cucumber and it would not be able to carry out this habit without the presence of sand. It is shown time and time again by the presence and habits of specific organisms in each area that the abiotic factors of each area affect the ability for an organism to survive in that system. See next page for transect table taken at Point Cartwright boulder area. (TRANSECT TABLE INSERT HERE!) Figure 1: Green Algae Percentage of Algae Cover (%) Metres from shore (M) Figure 2: Limpets Number of Limpets in Sector Metres from Shore (M) As seen in figure one, percentage of cover of green algae in each transect sector decreased the further from shore we travelled, and closer to the low tide mark. His explorations resulted in the vast expansion of property for Europe, the exchange of goods and cultures between countries and a change in the worldview of geography. Columbus s explorations were the catalyst for unprecedented trade known as the Columbian Exchange, which started the exchange of goods and ideas that would last for centuries and change the world forever. This war was also believed to be, at the time, the war to end all wars. It started on the 28th of July 1914 and was triggered by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria. On the 25th of April 1915, the British Empire sent the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp to Gallipoli in an invasion where the young soldiers were essentially led on a suicide mission. They were outnumbered. The campaign ended in a gruesome and horrific massacre of the ANZAC troops. The battle between Australia and Turkey on the Gallipoli Campaign during World War 1 is often glorified in the recognition of the ANZAC s excessive qualities such as courage and endurance; which is now known as the ANZAC Legend. However, it is undeniable that the reality of how the ANZAC legend was altered through propaganda, exaggeration and misunderstanding to portray a successful campaign. The fact that the ANZAC Legend was highly exaggerated is not often debated for the purpose of attempting to convince citizens that the deaths of the soldiers who fought in the Gallipoli Campaign were not in vain. we need to scrape off the barnacles and make sure the commemorations are actually about the soldiers and the tragedy of what they endured (Payne, 2015). Photovoltaic energy is one of the very promising renewable energy resources which grew rapidly in the past few years. Photovoltaics has one major problem and which is that with the variation of the operating conditions of the array, the voltage at which maximum power can be obtained from it also changes. In the thesis, a PV model is used to simulate actual PV arrays behavior, and then a Maximum Power Point tracking method and wind energy system using Feed Forward Neural networks is proposed in order to control the power. Further more, the proposed feed forward neural network technique using hybrid system is compared with the ANFIS(adaptive neuro fuzzy interference system). Simulation results shows that the proposed feed forward neural network maximum power point tracking method gives faster response than the ANFIS ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The root cause of this issue is the existence of a grey area between Article 121 (1) and Article 121(1A) of the Federal Constitution after the 1988 amendment. Mona Lisa Analysis Essay Fieldwork #2: Media Analysis for Gender Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa Section I: Objective Description This study serves as a gender focused analysis of Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa. The original piece of artwork was painted with oil on a white poplar panel in Florence, Italy around 1503 during the latter part of Leonardo da Vincis life. The artist was an Italian Renaissance artist who had a wide variety of interests. The woman who is believed to be depicted in the painting is Lisa Gherardini, a wife and mother of five children who married to an older man named Francesco di Bartolomeo di Zanobi del Giocondo at the age of only fifteen. The words Mona Lisa often translate to the words Madam Lisa . Leonardo da Vinci s painting of Mona Lisa has a strong resemblance to the description of the Virgin Mary, which during the Renaissance period was viewed as a representation of the ideal woman. The artist achieves a sense of softness around Mona Lisa s eyes and mouth, portraying a kindness and calmness about the woman. Nevertheless, this painting was also one of the first portraits to have an imaginary background, Leonardo strategically placed this mysterious background at the woman s eye level so that the two are related to one another. The background contains a large landscape with a very long path, cold mountains towards the distance, and a very small bridge right above her shoulder on the right side of the painting. A Puritan theocracy, the Republic of Gilead, with its religious trappings and rigid class, gender, and racial castes is built around the singular desire to control reproduction. Though many of you told stories that were offensive to other pilgrims on the trip or told stories that had little moralsignificance, I determined that there is one that most fully fulfills the requirements that I have set forth. The Nun s Priest s Tale is a beast fable, an allegory that utilizes animals with human characteristic in order to illustrate the message. The tale follows the story of Chanticleer, a beautiful rooster whose voice was merrier than the merry organ that plays in church, (153). Even in the Countryside, where there is little light from development, there is a lot of danger as death spreads its shadow alongside the dimmer light of development and progress. Patrick s own father, a self taught explosives expert, is killed in a mining accident. Here both the metaphorical light, progress and industry, and the literal light, the dynamite explosions, cast the shadow of death onto Patrick s father, to remind the reader how many lives of workers were sacrificed for development. No one remembers their contributions except for their closest family members. Despite the country shadows such as the death of Patrick s father, a clear contrast is drawn between light and shadow in urban versus countryside environments. Patrick is seen reminiscing about his father and recalls the old skill he learned from his father... in the sunlight, in rivers (p. 107). He contrasts his current work in the dark tunnels, the terrible place where he feels banished from the world (pg. 107), to the outdoor logging work he did in his hometown, contrasting the positive sunlit memories of his childhood with his darker struggles, ... This was a difficult task for Thomas, because he didn t have the usual technical equipment that is supplied for a big screen Hollywood production, he had a camera and needed to get key shots right the first time. He needed to be careful not to interfere or directly influence the babies and their families, keep true to his artistic vision, and stay focused on the theme of his film. Being a father of three children must have greatly worked to Thomas advantage. He would have known somewhat what to expect in relation to the different stages and milestones most babies achieve. The Piano Suites Diary Rodion Shchedrin Summary The piano suites Diary composed by Rodion Shchedrin who is one of the most well known contemporary composers and pianists in Russia, Shchedrin combines elements of Russian folklore styles, baroque inspired polyphony and pantonality techniques. The combination of compositional techniques has created a new musical language, present in his pianocompositions, fusing traditional Western compositional techniques with Russian folk musical styles. I used the score from the German publisher Schott Music. Diary, which is a set of seven compositions. This work was written for pianist Anna Gourari. The first performance was in Moscow on December 5, 2002. I found one commercial CD containing this suite, recorded by Ekaterina Mechetina, in album Schedrin Shakhidi , available on Spotify for reference. As composer suggested that it is possible to perform each piece separately, and he also mentioned attacca at each end of the movements. In this suite, Shchedrin developed a compositional technique that reintroduced the pitches of a single motive continuously throughout one movement, with rests as space between phrases. This piano suite, as one of the Shchedrin s influential present piano works, features a combination of performance elements and is attractive for both concert artists and young age students. This repertoire ranges in medium difficulty and is filled with elements of dance, folk music, traditional and non traditional harmonies. The use of contrasting textures and imaginative ... Covering this dry city, Riverside fell into a moist, humid atmosphere. Besides this, the day was bright and early for a hike up to the 40 acres University of California, Riverside Botanical Gardens. As I hiked there, all I can think about is the sweat escaping my body, running down my skin. Sexual Reproduction The chromosomal activity following sexual reproduction plays a vital role in generating genetic variation through the production of unique chromosome combinations. Independent assortment occurs during meiosis when both maternal and paternal homologous pairs separate independently, distributing chromatids from each parent to the gametes independent of each other (Mendel, 1865). As maternal and paternal chromosomes carry different genetic information, independent assortment produces different possible combinations of chromosome pairs. • 37. Essay On Spanish American Independence Spanish America s thirst for Independence dates all the way back to the 16th century, following the French revolution s success to abolish the monarchy. South America s desire to become independent from Spain was ignited by the French revolution and the declaration of Independence of the United States. South American Creoles (los criollos) of the upper class led the process of Independence of the Spanish colonies. Many historians claim the wars of Independence were a creole affair and throughout this essay many arguments will be addressed to justify their claims, a strong case in their favour being the leader and liberator, SimГіn BolГvar, who drove the creoles and other ethnic origins to their quest for autonomy. To begin, the 18th century marks the proposal of the Bourbon reforms, a series of changes which would jeopardise the relationship between the Spanish crown and its American colonies. The term Bourbon reforms derives from King Philip V (b. 1700 1746) and his successors plan to change the Spanish empire for the better. The Allegory Of Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler Sophie Carr Western Civ November 22, 2015 The Allegory of Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler The decline of the Weimar Republic marked a time of great concern over how post war Germany would shed its authoritarian past and reinvent itself. Feasibly, no other film from this era could so adeptly capture the history of immediate postwar Germany than Fritz Lang s Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler. Fritz Lang s melodramatic tale of an elusive and depraved gambler, or player as it s literally translated, is actually an allegory for a corrupt and economically unstable Germany that would soon give rise to fascism. Though Lang, a fervent anti fascist, would find great success in cinematically portraying despotism in his cult classic Metropolis (1927), Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler was the film that was the more directly connected to a recovering Germany. Dr. Mabuse is an allegory for the political and economic strife that took hold Weimar Germany. The film is of a man who plays a slick gambler, an esteemed physician, and a magician. He s a player in most, if not all, senses of the word. Dr. Mabuse s character is also described as being literally hypnotic, He [Lang] shows individuals being transformed into a state of total submission as well as a whole audience succumbing to an exercise in mass suggestion. 1 Only the state prosecutor, Norbert von Wenk, is capable of resisting Mabuse s powers, but Mabuse s striking supernatural powers and his loyal gang of felons thwart his investigation. ... • 52. Essay on President Wilson and the Treaty of Versailles President Wilson and the Treaty of Versailles President Wilson s righteous views of his efforts were so strong that not even the advice and urging of his closest confidants could sway his stance. While it is true that opposition forces helped to defeat the treaty, it was ultimately Wilson s stubbornness that led to its defeat in the Senate. There were many factors that led to the initial outbreak of World War I in Europe. A constant struggle to gain the upper hand in the balance of power existed, and it resulted in the formation of many alliances between European nations. For the most part, these agreements stipulated that the nations would aid one another if one of them were to be attacked by an enemy. Eventually two distinct ... U.S. support would prove to be enough of a boost to strike down the Central Powers attack, and it also signaled America s entrance into the peace negotiations that followed. During a speech to Congress while the war was still going on, President Woodrow Wilson introduced his Fourteen Points, which called for a new Europe and a peaceful world. Ideas expressed in the speech included a policy of open diplomacy with no secret treaties, freedom of the seas, removal of tariffs, arms reduction, fair colonial policies, as well as several boundary changes in Europe. But most important of all was point fourteen. This item called for a general association of nations for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike. This association, which would come to be known as the League of Nations, was conceived by the idealistic Wilson to keep the peace after the war and to promote open diplomacy between countries of varying types of size and power. I didn t, and don t mind though, they were nice to me. After about a year playing on the PS, Sony released the PS2 (PlayStation Two). Sickle cell disease occurs in 1 out of every 400 African Americans births (Field, et al 2009). And according to the Centers of Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), 1 out of 13 African American babies are born with the sickle cell trait (SCT). At the same time SCD is present in only 1 out of 300 Caucasian babies, thus it is considered to be one of the most prevalent genetic health disparities affecting people of African, Indian, Hispanic, and Mediterranean decent (Kotch, et al 2000). In order for a person to have this disease, both parents have to carry the Sickle Cell Trait. This trait is given to the parents by their parents in which one of them has the sickle cell gene S and the other has the normal A gene. Children are diagnosed with SCD as early as 4 months old and accurately diagnosed by the age of 6 months old. However, with sickled shaped RBCs, they clump together while flowing through these particularly small vessels, which causes the loss of oxygen throughout the tissues and organs. This monogenetic disease is caused by a point mutation in the ОІ globin gene that creates abnormal Hemoglobin S (HbS). There are five different haplotypes for SCD that are classified by their geographical region ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
