Who Wrote The Book Of Jonah
The prophet Jonah was an angry, hateful man who lived in eighth century B.C. During the reign of
King Jeroboam II, he was commission by God to go to Nineveh and tell them to repent of their wicked
ways. While it is not known, who wrote the book of Jonah is it widely believed to be have been
penned by the prophet himself. The passage I have chosen takes place after the people of Nineveh
repent and God has shown compassion for them. Jonah is stubbornly angry at God s compassion and
leaves Nineveh. The passage picks up with Jonah sulking on a hill overlooking the city.
The main themes in these verses are God s: 1) sovereignty; 2) love and mercy for all people, including
Jonah, and; 3) Jonah s selfishness. God s sovereignty is evident when

The Effect Of The Mafia On Italy s Economy
The ability of the citizens of a country to become entrepreneurs and stimulate the economy by starting
up companies is essential for the success of a country. There are many variables that can have a
negative effect on an economy and one that is currently hurting Italy s economy is the mafia. An
indirect side effect of the mafia s impact on the Gross domestic Profit is the government s ability to
aid small business growth. Thus, the government must spend more money to help businesses to
manifest and to put Italy in the best situation to have a raging national economy. Gross Domestic
Profit stands for the measure of a nation s total economic activity. In more relative terms, Gross
Domestic Profit represents the monetary value of all goods and ... Show more content on

First of all, there are different types of Italian mafias, depending upon which region that they are
located in and the market that they are exploiting. Italian organized crime is known all over the world,
to the point that the term Mafia is now understood across the globe as referring to the organized
criminal underworld. Literature on the subject is abundant, ranging from history, sociology and
criminology to fiction and plain entertainment. The distinctive character, looks, habits, idiosyncrasies
and jargon of the Mafiosi have been described, analyzed, explained and imitated. Apparently,
everybody is familiar with Italian organized crime (Europol 4). The top three mafia organizations
operating in Italy are Cosa Nostra, La Camorra and the Ndrangheta. Cosa Nostra is located on the
island of Sicily as the Mafiosi s main activity consists of their forced protection and they have strong
ties to Sicily s government. La Camorra is located in the region of Campania, but more specifically in
the capital: Napoli. La Camorra s main focus is controlling the food and coffee markets, black market,
as well as some drug trafficking. The Camorra clan, in turn, acquired from this relationship (1)
considerable economic resources from the firms (2) the consequent systematic control of economic
activity in the territorial area, the possibility of furnishing jobs and a marginal quota of the firm s
income, and hence widespread social consensus and even open legitimacy; (3) finally, through the
politicians, they secured the necessary institutional cover, in particular with the police and with
possible intervention in eventual judicial proceedings. This original relationship between the Camorra
and illegal non organized activities has not fundamentally changed over time, but has become stronger
and deeper as a result of two factors. (1) The omertà of its victims who do not denounce extortion for
fear of reprisal, but also not to bring

As the system progressed further into the Detail Design and Development phase, the contractor to
develop and integrate the system was identified as Northrop Grumman. As a leading global security
firm, Northrop Grumman was selected for their proven expertise in the development and integration of
innovative information systems in the government and commercial sector. The system was named
Global Combat Support System Army to provide continuity across the branches of the U.S. Military as
similar upgrades took place in the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps.
In consideration of best practices utilized in the commercial sector, the contractor proceeded to utilize
the COTS software known as SAP to implement the ERP. SAP ERP is developed by SAP AG, a
German software development firm specializing in business operations and recognized as the world s
largest enterprise applications software provider. Used globally and in a wide variety of applications,
SAP based ERPs can easily be adapted to various business processes. By utilizing this web based
software system, Northrop Grumman and the U.S. Army could implement a single solution to improve
operations across the entire logistics domain (GCSS A, 2016).
With full responsibility for the maintenance of the existing system and the development and
integration of the new system, Northrop Grumman conducted further analysis of the system
operational requirements and the human interaction with the system components.

Christopher Columbus s Four Voyages
Christopher Columbus took a total of four voyages, his intent was to sail west across the Atlantic
Ocean to reach Asia because he thought it would be would be shorter, safer, and less expensive than
going around Africa to the Indies. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who ruled Spain at the time,
funded his first voyage and promised Admiral of the Ocean Sea as long as he brought back riches and
claimed land for Spain (Meltzer 67). On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos,
Spain, with his three ships and ninety men and headed for the Canary Islands. After leaving the
Canary Islands, he landed on the Bahamas what he thought was the coast of China. On Christmas Eve,

Determinism Vs Compatibilism
Freewill has been thoroughly discussed by ancient philosophers and modern scientist alike yet no
conclusion has ever been reached. With the issue that whether freewill is consistent or inconsistent
with the idea that everything happens out of mechanistically that is deemed appropriate by the
universe. There are three common camps of thoughts on the matter of free will. Determinism and
Libertarianism and Compatibilism. This essay argues the fact that freewill is indeed not an illusion and
attempts to redress the balance between these camps of thoughts by offering an overview of strategy
via that of a compatabilism point of view.
Humans are a determined and free agents that has the ability to critique and modify their behaviours.

The argument is based on a crucial differences between the past and the future. Simply put, the future
is a open for things to happen without our prior knowledge of what is to come. It is possible to look
back at the past and reflect on what has happened but the same cannot be said for the future. We are
able to influence what the past became but we cannot literally change the past even if we admit the
possibility of time travel. The asymmetry between past and future is illustrated by the fact that we do
not deliberate about what has happened but we do so about what is to come. One can certainly
question about whether the past action that we have chosen is the best, but one can also both question
what future acts would be best as well as which future action should be performed, making the future
open in a way the past is not. When an individual is using free will, what is happening is that the
person is given a range of different opinion and selecting the best course of action, each option is
possible given the past and the laws of nature. This view of free will is often called the Garden of

Reading can open one s mind to the imagination of anything to be dreamt of. Poems, short stories,
novels, plays, and dramas are all different types of literature that exist today. All of the different types
of literature have their own ways and formats that they are written in. Literature has many ways of
speaking to us as we read them, it can strike up emotions or memories that we have or it can make us
rethink a situation that we are going through. I believe that literature can help a person open up
through his or her stories. Even though major racial events are over, such as the Holocaust and slavery,

The tone and irony of the story is serious and it also shows strength and determination. This story was
my favorite because I do not believe in segregation, I believe that everyone is the same. Skin color
does not make you who you are, your actions and morals so. I m a poet and didn t even know it, was
something an old teacher would say after he said something and it rhymed. Poetry is a great way to
express yourself, it does not have to rhyme or have reason behind it, just let it flow off the tip of your
tongue. When reading a poem, the author will use imagery to enable you to let your senses run wild.
In the poem The Facebook Sonnet by Sherman Alexie, it talks about Facebook and how it has
consumed our lives and the lives of the younger generation. Although it brings people together, it will
also tear them apart. Figurative language was not addressed in this poem, through the authors word
choice it was blunt and honest. The symbol and theme behind the whole poem is that everyone is
online nowadays instead of spending personal time with their loved ones. The tone and sound is
smooth and easy going. It is definitely something that everyone on social media should read. I

Mechanical Engineer Essay
Introduction
I did not always want to be an engineer. I wanted to be many things, I wanted to be a veterinarian, I
wanted to be a singer, I wanted to be firemen. I wanted to be many things, but nothing was as natural
to me as working with my hands. When I create, and assemble I m at my happiest. As a child when
begun helping around the house I was quickly drawn to any job that required me to fix things.
Changing light bulbs to assembling furniture, I was happy. Approaching high school, I was asked
frequently what I wanted to be when I grew up and I did not have an answer. I knew I wanted to do
something that required I work with my hands so I asked my mom and she mentioned architect s build

They may also visit the problem to better understand it and work towards a solution. A mechanical
engineer, depending on where they work, may be asked to design steam or gas turbines, or make a

Mechanical engineers are averagely paid $84,190 per year, or $40.48 per hour(Mechanical Engineers).
Considering most mechanical engineers work full time, that would make 35 40 hours getting paid

The need for Mechanical engineers is expected to increase with in the next 10 20 years(Mechanical

those who will build and fix problems, but those who design and can use such software required for
much of the designing prosses.

Voltaire s Theory Of Optimism
Candide, published in 1759 by Voltaire, is a satirical novella criticizing the type of European
Civilization Voltaire grew up around. Voltaire is known for his literary works mocking the time period
he lived in, especially when it came to their religious beliefs and the aristocracy he was surrounded
with. Due to Voltaire s experiences in Paris with European Society, Candide showcases his contempt
for organized religion, noble rank, and optimist philosophy.
Candide, the illegitimate son of a Baron s sister, lives in the Baron s castle, studying under the
philosopher Pangloss. Pangloss teaches Candide his theory of optimism, keeping Candide innocent to
the world beyond the castle. He thinks that the castle is the best castle there is, and that everything
happens for a good reason, a belief that Pangloss has instilled in him. Cunégonde, the Baron s
daughter, has caught the eye of Candide, and when they are found in a compromising romantic
position, he is tossed out of the Castle. From there, Candide sets out on many adventures, most having
unfortunate ends, giving Candide a taste of the reality he never got from castle life and studying under
Pangloss. He first enlists as a soldier, but is soon flogged for being a deserter. He escapes to Holland
where he is taken in by a kind Anabaptist, and discovers Pangloss as a deformed beggar who has
contracted syphilis. As optimistic as ever, Pangloss informs Candide that the baron and his family,
including Cunégonde have been murdered

Why Did Argentina Fall So Fast
Argentina: one of the southernmost countries in the world. It is a Spanish speaking regional power,
and is a developed nation, standing 35th in the World. However, Argentina, just a century earlier, was
a global power, a formidable nation to be reckoned with. Argentina, at the time, was the 7th most
developed nation on the globe, ranking better than Russia, China and even Italy. It had the largest
immigrant population in Latin America, and the second largest in the world, only surpassed by the
United States. Nearly 7 million immigrants took up residence in the country, and literacy rates
skyrocketed. Argentina was number 1# in the exporter of many products, including beef. But, in the
decades that followed, Argentina s development lagged behind the rest of the world, stagnant and
lacking progress. Argentina dropped from 7th to 54th most developed country in the world. Her
immigrant influx dropped exponentially. One might ask: what caused Argentina to fall so fast? The
partial answer was decades of political mismanagement, corruption, and a grim series of dictatorships.
However, the real stagnation and destruction of Argentina s power came in the 1970 s and 1980, with
horrific crimes committed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

lonely from the day it was brought to life. In addition, its development has evolved through frequent
stages of learning and experiencing as a human and is pertinent to how the creature became relatively
close to being a human to behaviors that revealed it to be more of a monster. To understand the

His curiosity for social interaction is energetic and capable as he educated himself through a family
living in the woods and reading books he stole from his creator. With the creature s intention to
interact, it is interrupted; visually, the creature is unappealing and treated in a manner that is not kind.
The creature explains in one of his experiences of interaction that he will never have the ability to be
understood about his looks, As I fixed my eyes on the child, I saw something glittering on his breast. I
took it; it was a portrait of a most lovely woman. In spite of my malignity, it softened and attracted
me. For a few moments I gazed with delight on her dark eyes, fringed by deep lashes, and her lovely
lips; but presently my rage returned; I remembered that I was forever deprived of the delights that
such beautiful creatures could bestow and that she whose resemblance I contemplated would, in
regarding me, have changed that air of divine benignity to one expressive of disgust and affright
(16.32). The creature was drawn to the eyes of the woman but became conscious of the idea that he
cannot belong in a world where people look at him in disgust and fear. This effect on the creature
creates an image in his mind that life will never change for him and that people won t change either.
Another example representing the results of his interaction with others is the family

The ancient Egyptian cats were held in the highest esteem; the penalties for harming or killing a cat
was death. They worshipped a cat as a goddess often represented as half feline, half woman, whom
they called Bastet. The main center where they worshipped Bastet was in northern Egypt at the city of

after death as humans. During the new kingdom, the Egyptian cats were sometimes painted in the

Pollution of the Marine Environment
As per Article 1(4) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea , 1982 (UNCLOS),
pollution of marine environment means the introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances
or energy into the marine environment, including estuaries, which results or is likely to result in such a
deleterious effect as to harm living resources and marine life, hazardous to human health, hindrance to
marine activities, including fishing and other legitimate uses of the sea, impairment of quality for use
of seawater and reduction of amenities.
Marine pollution is a serious ocean water resource challenge that can affect human and animal food
resources. Unfortunately human activities are the largest contributor and cause of problems resulting
from the oceans being polluted. Furthermore, as the human population continues to grow and extend
the range of its activities, as well as increase its demands for marine goods and services, the world s
oceans and coasts will be increasingly stressed. In fact, growing coastal populations and overuse of
marine resources are the main source of the problem. The pollution linked with rising coastal
populations, availability of inadequate treatment infrastructure of sewage and other waste handling
facilities is putting at risk human health and

China s Aging Population And The Hukou System
The selection of blog entries is an important process involving the need to thoroughly take into
account the subject topic and accordingly carry out the review of the topic. The blogs are means to
represent the idea in brief in order to make it clear for understanding by the reader. The blog should
not be formed of complex set of words, which are tough to understand by the reader. Instead, the
precise description in an easy language should be carried out in order to benefit the reader by adding
to their knowledge. Thus, two blogs have been written here titled as China s aging population , and
The Hukou system . Each of these has been described in the context of the topic so as to make them
clear and precise enough to the reader.
The blog titled China s aging population describes how the increase in population is a growing
concern for the country. The reason for selection of this topic is to explore how the increase in aged
population of China is causing an impact on the country s economic system. The increase in
population is a serious issue of concern, which is well controlled by the government through
introducing one child policy (Peilin, 2015). This parameter has however resulted into several side
effects such as increase in aged people in the country. As a result of this, the expenses associated with
elderly people is also increasing, which is an interesting area focused in the blog. It was rather a good
choice of topic as it helped in exploring how the increase

Mr. Walsh, the plaintiff s attorney, is presenting the issue of actual knowledge of intoxication. Mr.
Walsh is arguing against summary judgment based on two reasons. First, Indiana Courts have held
that when a reasonable inference of evidence and circumstances of a case could result in more than
one conclusion, summary judgment is inappropriate. Second, the jury could infer that the bartender
had actual knowledge of the visible intoxication of Mr. Hard when he last served him alcohol. Ms.
Babot is arguing against summary judgment based on approximate cause due to three reasons. First,
there are reasonable inferences that a jury could make in favor of the plaintiff. Second, the injuries to
Mrs. White were the reasonable and foreseeable consequences of serving an intoxicated patron.
Thirdly, a criminal can be the intervening act that does not break the chain of causation because the act
is reasonably foreseeable. Ms. Babot listed four factors that a judge has to look at when considering
approximate. What and how much alcohol was consumed, what is the amount of time it was served in,
the conditions of the patron before leaving the bar, and the condition of the patron immediately after

knowledge and gratitude received is reward enough. This is more than a career, it s an all consuming
life style. The goal of a missionary is to enlighten non believers of Jesus Christ and integrate new

not from money, stability, or the chance of a promotions. Entry level is exit level in the mission field.
(cmalliance.org). There is no climbing to the top, corner office, or big shots in missions but people
who are genuinely called to the mission field do not mind. This career relies heavily upon one s faith
in the Lord and trust that He will persevere through all trials and burdensome times. I keep my eyes
always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. (Psalm 16:8) is the anthem for
many working in missions. Traveling while telling others of Christ is wonderful, especially receiving a
pay check while doing so, however missionaries do have to leave their families behind in order to go

that as part of the job in order to go spread to love to people. The positives of mission work outweigh
the negatives tremendously. Mission work is strenuous, however yields wonderful results of newborn

and challenges that lie ahead for the large world renowned telecommunication company. Here we will
take a deeper dive into the growing concerns of AT T and form an environmental analysis of the three
most significant factors, in my opinion that AT T is currently or will face in the near future.
One of the biggest concerns for AT T falls into the category of Threat of Substitution and is the same
concern that many other cable companies have and that is the waves and waves of cord cutters that are
consuming TV in a very different manner. We ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That leaves satellite margins at $42 and pushes DirecTV Now margins to slim, or even negative . The
only positive that AT T can take away from this is that almost every other cable company is facing the
same issues. However, it could prove to be detrimental to one of AT T s competitive advantages,
differentiated services.
Another looming concern posing a threat to AT T ties in with the first concern of AT T s new cable
plan through Direct TV, Direct TV Now and the free streaming feature the service offers. Federal
regulators raised new concerns about AT T Inc. s practice of excluding its new DirecTV Now
streaming service from data charges and, for the first time, lobbed similar questions at Verizon
Communications Inc. . Verizon similarly allows customers to stream NFL games from Twitter or its
go90 app without using data. The agency argues the practice could deter consumers from accessing
mobile video services not affiliated with the carriers, such as those from Netflix Inc. or Hulu, which is
co owned by Walt Disney Co., Comcast Corp., 21st Century Fox and Time Warner Inc. 21st Century
Fox and News Corp, parent company of The Wall Street Journal, share common ownership . Both AT
T and Verizon are insistent that allowing customers to steam content without data usage or charges is
beneficial to customer, but most view this practice as a way to diminish competition in

Genetic Testing or Genetic Screening
Genetic testing, also known as screening, is a rapidly advancing new scientific field that can
potentially revolutionize not only the world of medicine, but many aspects of our lives. Genetic
screening is the sequencing of human DNA in order to discover genetic differences, anomalies, or
mutations that may prove pathological. As genetic screening becomes more advanced and easily
accessible, it presents society with difficult questions that must be asked about the boundaries of
science and to what degree we are allowed to tamper with the human genome. To better understand
the potential impact of genetic screening on our society, we must examine the potential benefits in
comparison to the possible negative impact it may cause. With this ... Show more content on

335). There are many reasons to support further research into genetic screening but unfortunately such
a complicated and controversial field also brings up ethical, legal and social issues that need to be
addressed. One of the greatest issues surrounding genetic screening is one of privacy and potential
discrimination. Some people fear that a predictive test that shows someone is at higher risk of
developing a particular condition can be used against said person. Employers could become interested
in knowing the probabilities of their workers developing chronic conditions, which might lead to
hiring discrimination. Genetic predispositions towards certain diseases could also be used to deny
health insurance to some individuals. This may seem unlikely but it is an issue that definitely warrants
concern. Brynne Stainsby s father was diagnosed with the gene that causes degenerative brain
disorder, meaning she had one in two odds of developing Huntington s disease. When preparing to
start her own chiropractic practice she learned that it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to
get covered if she possesses this same gene. Simply coming from a family that was predisposed to
Huntington s disease was enough to disqualify her from life or disability insurance. Many people find
it hard to believe that such discrimination could occur in a country as

Wolf Moose Project
Term Project Specification Predator Prey Model and Analysis of the Wolf Moose Relationship
Administrative Information John Suarez: dynamic analysis, research David Shuttleworth: system
engineer, UML modeling System being modeled This project plans on modeling a dynamic system
predator prey relationship. The wolf moose relationship of Isle Royal represents a unique location
where moose is solely preyed upon by wolves. And wolves prey mostly just on moose; however, it has
been noted that beavers have been a secondary food source. The wolf and moose population in this
locale has been studied thoroughly and population statistics have been recorded for over 50 years.

We hope to employ machine learning techniques that may lead to a model that can better predict
future issues for planning and conservation. Model Formulation The wolf moose relationship will first
be modeled using UML. The purpose and requirements of the conceptual model will be captured
using UML via use case diagrams. Furthermore, a class diagram will be used to document the system
components, and a state diagram will be used to capture the possible states of a wolf and moose. The
state diagram may also be used as a building block for possible Markov Chain and Bayesian Net
models. Sequence and Activity diagrams will also be generated to model the dynamic behavior of the
predator prey relationship. This model will be particularly useful for building a dynamic model. The
system will be modeled using a Bayesian Network or Markov Model. These types of models may be
useful for determining cause of moose death: natural causes or harvested by wolves. This model will
be based on historical data where the predator prey relationship was particularly isolated to external

Television In The 1960 s
Television in the 1960s brought Americans closer through the stories and tragedies they experienced.
As televisions became more mainstream and affordable, more people invested in them. The time was
right for the industry to flourish. Between 1959 and 1970, the percentage of households in the U.S.
with at least one TV went from 88% to 96% (Ganzel). More people buying TVs meant that the
industry grew and the technology could improve. As satellite technology developed, it became
inevitable for satellite television to develop. The biggest leap of 1960s television technology wise, was
satellite usage (Thompson). With TV signals that could reach far, and a TV in almost every American
home, people felt more connected to the world around them. They ... Show more content on

News programs in the 60s were a major selling point in buying a television. Part of television s
success is due to the news being so relevant and reliable. In the 50s and 60s, news on the television
made very informative and relevant content (Ganzel). Television in the 60s had many fandoms and
communities for its popular shows, such as Star Trek. When many people have similar interests or like
the same thing, they usually get along. When Star Trek first aired, it wasn t very popular. However, it
has since gained a cult following and remains a very active franchise to today (Feinstein, 12)
Television in the 1960s opened a door to a source of information and entertainment like never before.
One of reasons Americans are so united today is because television in the 60s showed people what
they had in common. Television signals weaved in and out of America, sewing us together and

Pecola s Ugliness In The Bluest Eye
In the Autumn section of The Bluest Eye, the reader constantly sees Pecola Breedlove thinking with a
low sense of self esteem and dignity specifically towards her appearance and the way others view her.
Taking her ugliness, she begins to compare herself to members of the world around her, in turn beating
herself up over it. During the chapter, she approaches Mr. Yacobwski s candy store and buys three
pieces of a candy called Mary Janes. For some background, the wrapper of the candy has A picture of
little Mary Jane, for whom the candy is named. Smiling white face. Blonde hair in gentle disarray,
blue eyes looking at her out of a world of clean comfort (50). These physical descriptions are exactly
how Pecola wants to look which has been brought across through her constant prayers for blonde hair

full of laughter with no sense of comfort. Additionally, one would think that the adults around Pecola
would give her some justice but it was the opposite. They tried never to glance at her, and called on
her only when everyone was required to respond (46). The actions of the teachers further show how
Pecola is received in her community since stereotypically teachers should be the most accepting

Bowling For Columbine as a Carnivelsque Essay
To what extent can BFC be viewed as drawing on key elements of Bakhtin s notion of carnivalesque?
Bowling for Columbine is a post structural film produced by Mike Moore. It leaves a message about
America and its people. Today, the world is not a safe place. However, the world is made unsafe by
the people who don t believe it is safe. This is what the film is based on: fear and guns. Bowling For
Columbine is a carnivalesque to an extent as it contains many elements of a carnivalesque. These
elements are shown through repetition, polyphony of voices and the creation of another world.
Many responders would believe that this movie is a misleading act based on Mike Moore s self
promotion. When looking beneath the surface however, we can see ... Show more content on

There are so many different opinions and voices that it destroys the one single ideology and therefore,
forces responders make up their own mind as to what the answer to the question is.
The repetition of ideas and random images has a significant impact on the answer to the film and the
responders. There are many ideas that are seemingly insignificant to guns that are constantly being
brought up. However, they all represent some part of America, its people and fear. The report on
Africanized bees seems random yet is very significant when relating it to the black and white
community. Africanized bees are a lot more harmful than the normal bees that America has. Therefore,
families try to kill these Africanized bees. These bees represent the black community and the normal
bees represent the white community as they have a bigger population and are less harmful from a
white person s point of view. Identical reports are also repeated to make the point clearer. This is
shown through Moore s arrangement of clips so that reporters are shown to repeat Black man and
suspect continuously. Random images such as these are constantly repeated in the film. This brings
forward many ideas as the responder wonders how they relate to the idea of America and guns in the
film. However, not just random images are constantly repeated. The same idea of people bowling and

Internal Conflicts In Alice Walker s The Color Purple
As individuals, we must understand ourselves and our personal struggles. As part of a society, we must
understand how we fit into the world around us. Consequently, we must then bridge the gap between
these two ideas. In the film adaptation of Alice Walker s The Color Purple, the main character, Celie,
discovers her individuality overtime, as she eventually finds her niche among others (Spielberg,
1985). Through incorporating both internal conflicts and how a person relates with the external
society, The Color Purple acts as a transitional piece, linking the unit of conflicts of self to the unit of
conflicts involving groups.
The Color Purple examines several aspects of unit one, including the difference between singular or
multiple perspectives and the subsequent impact of adding more perspectives to an issue. As
discovered in unit one, the principle of Occam s Razor, which usually favors a singular perspective,
holds that entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity, but this thought process often
oversimplifies the issue by disregarding certain aspects or details of a situation (The Editors of
Encyclopædia Britannica, 2015). As if adhering to Occam s Razor, Celie in the film, rather than
further complicate her situation, chooses the path of least resistance by living the majority of her early
to mid life viewing her circumstance with a singular perspective in which the society holds that she
has no choice, but to conform to its sexist expectations (Spielberg, 1985). However, Sofia and Shug
provide new, additional perspectives that fuse together in the formation of a cyclopean image, which
gives Celie greater awareness of her situation (The Cyclopean View, n.d.; Spielberg, 1985). Through
gaining these multiple perspectives, Celie realizes the abuse she suffers and decides to take initiative
against them, eventually embracing her inner individuality and no longer submitting to the whims of
every man she encounters, as society would expect a black woman of the time to do (Spielberg, 1985).
By unveiling the power of multiple perspectives in comparison to a singular perspective, The Color
Purple coincides with a predominant topic of unit one.
Undoubtedly, The Color Purple touches on the seeming thesis

Rhetorical Analysis Of Once More To The Lake
In the text Once More to the Lake author E.B. White focuses on appealing to fathers or even possibly
parents in general. The text is eloquently written to ultimately reiterate that change is constant and at
some point in life all people will eventually die. His primary goal of this text is to enjoy the moments
in one s life before life is over. A nostalgic tone is used throughout when comparing his childhood
memories to the current memories he is making with his own son. White is effective in illustrating his
purpose by using techniques such as logos, ethos, pathos, and imagery to encourage his audience to be
aware that their own lives are inevitably growing older each day. In order to gain attention and
credibility from the intended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He refers multiple times to fishing terms that the general audience may not be knowledgeable of such
as spinner ( Once para. 1), hellgrammite ( Once para. 5), and bass ( Once para. 5). These terms not
only classify White as a fisherman but also suggest the importance or impact that fishing and the lake
have on his life. By using logos in his writing, he gains credibility with his intended audience.
Although ethos and logos are important modes as well, this text is most effective due to White s
continuous use of pathos. His thesis statement suggests the urge to return to his childhood memories,
...this feeling got so strong I bought myself a couple of bass hooks and a spinner and returned to the
lake where we used to go, for a week s fishing and to re visit old haunts ( Once para. 1).The audience
is also evoked with anticipation to what will happen later. A good example of this is I took along my
son, who had never had any fresh water up his nose and who had seen lily pads only from train
windows ( Once para. 2). The audience is left asking how the trip with his son will compare to his
own memories. White goes on to describe in intricate detail his memory of the lake, cabins, and
scenery. He uses visual imagery to allow the audience to place themselves in the setting he has
described. White wants to emphasize the permanence of some things, or at least the memory of some
things, despite the continual change that happens in the world

Personal Characteristics Of An Individual
Personal characteristics lead to the development of the personality of an individual. As a female, my
routine in each week as well as all my activities, help to develop my personality. I am an international
student from China, and my everyday plans help define the exact personality I possess. My essay will
include a plan for three days from the 26th of April to the 28th of April, where the three days will
present my personality traits through the personal characteristics that I possess. The essay will present
how adaptive, cautious, committed, cooperative, dependable, and well organized among other factors
that I am.
I start all my days by taking a shower for about 20 minutes after I wake up at 10 am. After I had
showered and dressed, I open my computer to check for my day schedules to identify the assignments
that ought to be turned in. While checking the daily routine and class assignments, I make a list on
notecard of the assignments that I need to turn in and other important events on my calendar. On April
26, I had a quiz and presentation to prepare. In my diary, I note that I also have a quiz of human
resource management class on 28th April, and I need to be prepared for it. Thus, I need to make time
to prepare for the quiz during the day. Once I am done with my morning activities, and listing all the
things that I need to do on that day, I prepare myself to leave. Prior to leaving my home, I text my

Jcpenney Strategic Analysis Essay
STRATEGIC ALTERNATIVES
In January 2012, newly appointed CEO, Ron Johnson introduced a plan to rebrand the department
store chain into a 21st century retail powerhouse. Launching of the new J. C. Penney brand identity
was set to occur over four years and would include a new logo, a new in store experience featuring
new and transformed brands, and most importantly, it would change the way that the company priced
merchandise. Unfortunately, J. C. Penney suffered a 25% sales decline in the first year and Johnson
was fired after only 17 months.
Historically, J. C. Penney s strength had been communicating the relationship between quality and
value, in a way that the customer could understand. J. C. Penney lost this connection when we ...

BACKGROUND AND STATE OF INDUSTRY
Historically, the department store affected every facet of social and economic life in America. The rise
of the department store from the mid 1850s to the end of the 19th century was a major revolution for
business and society. It revolutionized the shopping experience and created an entirely new view of
ordinary retail stores. Endless categories of items from jewelry and accessories to home goods and
furniture were available to all customers under one roof. Department stores found success in the early
years, because they were selling more than just products. They were selling an entire experience to the
American consumer. Known for their low prices, convenience, experience, and variety, department
stores emerged as the iconic establishments of their time. These stores became mainstream institutions
in downtown areas. Some department stores, such as Filene s, even had restaurants and tearooms
located inside the building. They had services like photo studios and special events like fashion shows
and parades. Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade is still a widely popular event today, originating in

African-American Stereotypes
In the works Let the Great World Spin, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jazz, and The Help, the
portrayals of African Americans reinforce established racial stereotypes. Dorcas and the prostitutes
represent the jezebel; the absent male is viewed and reinforced through the perspectives of Violet,
Golden Gray, and even Minny; Aibileen and Minny represent the mammies, and in a way, Jim is Huck
s mammy too. While there are instances in all four novels of characters challenging stereotypes, these
characters primarily reinforce racial stereotypes.
The jezebel represents a female character who is sexually promiscuous and very sexualized. In Jazz,
by Toni Morrison, Dorcas aligns closely with the jezebel description. Dorcas wants to detach ... Show

Minny is described by the narrator as 33, black, plump and in uniform, rolls her eyes beneath a crystal
chandelier. She shouts up the mahogany stairwell (Stockett 6). The mammy character also represents a
female character who is sassy and not a threat to the household s male. Aibileen is older than Minny,
and her relatives before her were also housemaids who worked for white families. Aibileen says: I
know how to get them babies asleep, stop cryin and go in the toilet bowl before they mommas even
get outta bed in the mornin (Stockett 2). In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark
Twain, the character who resembles the mammy the closest is Jim. While Jim s physical description is
not that of a mammy, his mentality is. From different perspectives, Jim is Huck s mammy because of
his guidance, superstitions, and parental like figure all attributes of a mammy. Jim says: Lemme look
at you chile, lemme feel o you. No, you ain t dead! you s back again, live and soun, jis de same ole
Huck de same ole Huck, thanks to goodness! (Twain 325). Jim s parental like concern for Huck is
similar to that of a nanny, and specifically of Aibileen s, who cares very much for Mae Mobley. Three
characters in particular, Violet, Golden Gray, and Minny, reinforce the absent male stereotype. Violet
was born in the late 1800 s in Virginia. Her mother was Rose Dear, but her father, who was not named,
left Violet s family when she was very young.

How Does Steinbeck Create Tension in of Mice and Men in...
The tension that Steinbeck creates in chapter six is very prominent; there are moments of peace and
moments of despair. The first case in which Steinbeck creates tension is at the very beginning of the
first chapter where the reader can hear peace. It is only after reading chapter six that the reader on
hindsight can compare the peacefulness in the first chapter to the tension in the last chapter, this
creates tension as the reader is now well aware that one of Steinbeck s narrative techniques is that the
movement goes from harmony to discord. Steinbeck also uses pathetic fallacy, figurative and
colloquial language to build the tension in the readers mind.
The tension in chapter six rises when the reader finds out that the setting in the ... Show more content

Another way in which Steinbeck uses strong verbs and adjectives is in the phrase jacked its way clear
of the water which implies force; ironically a heron is a very delicate bird, whereas these incident
show violence. These short simple sentences complement the absurdity of the event, which quickly
builds the momentum of tension in chapter six.
Tension is also built when the reader finds out how opposite things are happening to Lennie. His
clumsy body language signals the tension to the reader. Steinbeck uses words like quietly to make the
reader think that it is as though he knows he has done something wrong. Lennies body language can
be shown through the way he drinks the water as he kneels down in chapter six, instead of drinking
like a horse in chapter one. We find this to be very different to the Lennie we met in chapter one. As
Lennie is trying to process the problem we can assume that he feels guilty for what he has done.
Tension in the novel again rises when there is a conversation between Lennie, his aunt Clara and a
gigantic rabbit . Let alone everything we see to show the workings of Lennies mind, we can still tell
that his mind is childlike if he is having imagery of a gigantic talking rabbit . The hallucinations that
Lennie has shows that his mind is slowly breaking making the atmosphere more tense. Steinbeck very
intelligently shows the dying of day through the lengthening shadows and that darkness is taking over.

Never Stop Dreaming Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within

came from Harriet Tubman. Even from Harriet Tubman s time people were dreaming about making a
difference in the world. Throughout the dream unit, I have realized that dreams are what give people
the motivation in the morning to wake up. Many of the people we read or listened to had a very
determined vision of what they were going to do with their life and when they worked very hard at it,
that vision came true. With enough perseverance and persistence, dreaming is worth it, because Walt

millions of dollars. Although there is a better chance that they will get eaten by a shark, they still have

charity. If they don t achieve their first dream, who told them that they can t keep going? Keep

Scarlet Letter Brooding Romanticism
At the end of chapter 5, it is evident that Hester is more of a brooding Romantic; she has a tragic
confrontation with the universe around her, she isolates herself and becomes paranoid, and she
develops a dark outlook of her scarlet letter by associating it with Hell. After experiencing an extreme
amount of public humiliation, it is no surprise that Hester Prynne may think negatively about her
reality in Boston. Hester s negative outlook, a characteristic that can be credited to her broodingly
romantic personality, is clearly evident within the end of chapter 5. The cause of this negative outlook
is due to a tragic confrontation that she experiences with the world around her. She looks beyond her
own sins and has a sudden realization that in fact anyone has the ability to transgress just as easily as
she did. Hester is terror stricken by the revelations of knowing that others sin. The fact that she is
terror stricken suggests that she is now looking at the world around her in a way she never previously
had. Hester is overwhelmed with terror to realize that people are genuinely immoral. This scene
highlights a major concept of brooding romanticism: a character having a tragic confrontation with the

You Cannot Trust Fast Food Companies
We have all seen those advertisements that show glorious looking hamburgers that look like are
simply exploding with tasty goodness, but how many times has our food actually looked like the
advertisement? In my experience, that number would be zero. These advertisements are meant to trick
our minds into thinking fast food is much better than it is in reality. Although, this argument could be
made about just about any company in this age of brand personification, but just because other
companies do this does not mean its ethically sound. In addition to that fast food is an item that is

take advantage of this fact. (Sclosser)
Companies take advantage of children for a couple of reasons with the first being the advantage of
brand recognition or branding . When we are young we make strong connections to things that
influence us, such as the comfort a McDonalds hamburger may bring. Companies know this and by
creating a fun atmosphere that is kid friendly they can create this connection that can last for a
lifetime. Fast food restaurants use kid friendly items such as the playland, kids meal, and toys that
come with the kid s meals. Inventions such as these were created to draw the easily appeased mind of
a child into the restaurant. Children are an easy target for fast food companies to prey upon, which
makes fast food companies extremely eager to utilize this. As the

The Industrial Waste Management Practices
INTRODUCTION:
Huge plants which operate in the industry of light, chemicals and other heavy industries, although
providing substantial employment and improving the economy, contribute to a lot of aquatic pollution
. Unless the industrial waste management practices are regulated and monitored for sensitive water
bodies around them, they pose a significant contamination risk. Locating a resourceful site, providing
facilities along with industrial waste and operational management practices are needed to minimize
this risk.
The most commonly affecting industrial waste includes petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals,
surfactants, toxins and/or salts, which pollute surrounding water bodies, making them unsuitable for
most of the water needs and harming the aquatic life therein. Algal blooms and oxygen deficit are the
result of excessive nutrients found in the waters.
Industrial wastes are also known to pollute underground water too which increase the cost and risk of
cleaning/treating sewage. Industrial pollutants such as oxygen scavengers may corrode pipes and
equipment in the sewerage collection system and in treatment plants. Greases and suspended matter
can cause pipe blockages and odors.

another is also a huge benefit of the method making it easier for the truth to come out and harder for
lies to see the light. Personal narratives and information gained from narrative methods tend to come
from truthful sources based on not wanting to tarnish individual s credibility, and not seeing a reason
in creating lies and misleading information. Nevertheless, many problems can also be seen within the
method harder and less likely to prevent. The limited perspective is detrimental in the sense that only
that one perspective s views through emotion and feeling are used to describe the situation if there had
only been one account. Unless there are multiple viewpoints from different individuals who think and
act differently put together to create one image from all different sides, which isn t very practical to
do. The narrative method also creates a restricted view in the sense that anything the reader does not
know, you don t know. Such as taking into consideration different socio contexts and the individuals
thinking spectrums. The narrative account may also be biased, understanding the story through ones
eyes, leaves room for events and facts to change based on what the individual thinks, wants, and

Response Paper On Rituals
Response Paper #2 By Yaffa Segal From my understanding, a ritual is something that occurs more
than once and has a meaning behind it. For example, a prayer. A more basic example could be
brushing your teeth every morning after you wake up. Rituals are used both by humans and animals.
Animals often have mating rituals. Humans have been performing rituals since the earliest of times for
a variety of reasons. In the Stone Age, rituals could have been used to communicate with gods or dead
ancestors. They could also have been used to mark different times of the year. For example, the
different seasons. Rituals were a form of symbolic activity. Some rituals even involved masks or other
carvings. Perhaps there was even a ritual for making a carving. ... Show more content on

We use many forms of expression in this ritual. First of all, there are certain prayers that are said in
synagogue. The prayers take a lot longer than normal, and generally finish around 2:30pm. On both
the first evening and the second evening we eat simanim, which are symbolic foods. The first is honey
in order to pray for a sweet new year. The custom is to dip an apple in honey. Another food is carrots
so that G d will nullify any bad decrees. We eat beets so that our enemies will be removed. Another
food is the head of a fish. Not everyone eats it, as many do not find it appealing. However, most
people have a tiny piece from it. This is to symbolize that we be like the head and not the tail; always
moving forward, not backwards. We eat leak (or cabbage) so that those who want to hurt us will be cut
off. Other symbolic foods include dates, gourd, beats, and pomegranate seeds. We say a blessing on
each one. One Rosh Hashanah, we wish others a shanah tova which means a good year. Rosh
Hashanah is a time for judgement. G d writes your fate for the year. On Rosh Hashanah it is written
and on Yom Kippur (about a week later) it is sealed. On Rosh Hashanah we are praying that G d will
give us a sweet, new year and that nothing bad will happen to us. A major part of Rosh Hashanah is to
blow the shofar, which is a hollowed out ram s horn. This shofar is a wake up call for us in order to
remind us to wake up and repent for any of our wrongdoings. Although I have celebrated Rosh
Hashanah every year since I was born, I actually do not know the origins of it. I have never thought
about that before, and it is something I am definitely going to look

Seatbelts In My College Career
In order to commence an awe inspiring journey, one must have legitimate support to get them off to a
great start and keep them going till they scorch pass the finish line. It s like getting on to a
rollercoaster and having to put on seatbelts in order for the ride to begin. I have been working
diligently towards searching and applying for a myriad of scholarships and financial aid in order to
constitute a virtual seatbelt that will protect me throughout my college career. The dilemma is not that
people lack money for college, but rather it s that people lack effort in searching for help. Without that
protection in place one could plunge into debt and instead of leaving college to pursue a dream one
could end up cemented in a nightmare. Once that seatbelt is firmly built it is now time to ... Show

Community Planning And Community Planning
Economic Development refers to economic growth, while economic growth refers to increase in GDP
(Nafziger, 2012). Economic development requires the government s dedications, incentives, vision,
and leadership (Morgan, 2011). Smart economic development, on the other hand, leverages
technology to increase efficiency, and reduce cost. It requires the government s dedications,
incentives, vision, and leadership. Public Wi Fi, for example, can be used as a tool to connect business
and citizens by supporting business transactions. Private investments and businesses play key roles in
ensuring a strong economy (McConnell, Brue Flynn, 2009). The goal of economic development is to
reduce unemployment, create jobs, lower poverty, lower crime rate, and increase income, which may
lead to a strong economy, better quality of life, and prosperity. Figure 2 illustrates the economic
development process map. Community Planning, on the other hand, is a strategic process of creating
innovative solutions to solve the community challenges, protect, and preserve the community s assets
(infrastructure, attractions, business, utilities, libraries, schools, personal properties, and the people).
The goals of community planning are building a community based sustainable food system, manage
water resources and develop conservation strategies, provide decent housing for the resident, foster
and expand economic opportunities, create laws, policies, zoning, and regulations, and design and

The Color Red in American Beauty Essay
The Color Red in American Beauty
The beauty that addresses itself to the eyes is only the spell of the moment; the eye of the body is not
always that of the soul. George Sand hit the nail right on the head when he said this in 1872.
Appearance versus reality has been a central theme in many American creative works including the
film American Beauty. American Beauty is a film that delves into your typical, middle class suburban
American home and slowly uncovers all of the abnormalities that lie within. The family is portrayed
as normal but as the films tag line suggests look closer then it is possible to fully understand the
implications that takes place in this seemingly happy home. The film is masterfully directed by the

Another adaptation of the title is the beauty of a perfect American home much like the Burnham s
home appears to be. But all have flaws, the rose has thorns to prick, Angela has her fear of being
ordinary and the Burnham s home, well it too is cursed with the reality that they are a dysfunctional
family.
Red roses become not only a motif in the film; they come to represent symbols. They are prevalent in
almost every scene. They are in the garden; almost every room in the house has a bouquet of brightly
colored roses in a vase. They are the centerpieces to the dining room table. This table becomes a motif
in the film as well, the family has its nightly dinner ritual and over the course of the movie we see a
delineation of the family at this table. Rose petals are the symbol of sex as well, they are seen
surrounding Angela for Lester, they burst out of her blouse, they pop out of his mouth after he
fantasizes of kissing her and they fall from the ceiling onto his face when he pictures her above his
bed. The front door to the house becomes a motif as well, with constant references from neighbors
about the house with the red door. As if the door is a gateway to the oddities lurking inside the house.
Within the house Mendes restricted the colors to a monochromatic blue gray scheme to emphasize

Female Roles In Crime And Punishment Essay
Female roles In Crime And Punishment Love resurrected them; the heart of one contained infinite
sources of life for the heart of the other (Dostoyevsky 521). Crime And Punishment is a novel about
one man, Raskolnikov; this novel follows his life after committing a terrible crime, murder. This novel
shows the mental and physical affects that play on his body after committing such a crime. In the
novel Crime And Punishment, Dostoyevsky uses Alyona, Sonia and to drive the plot of the novel. In
the beginning, the first female character you see is Alyona, an elderly pawnbroker. Alyona is the
reason for the murder and the brutality that was put into the murder. Alyona is murdered because she
cheats others less fortunate than her; she also abuses poor and helpless Lizaveta. This can been seen
when Raskolnikov hears the student say that She was a complete slave and went in fear and trembling
of her sister, who made her work day and night, and even beat her (Dostoyevsky 61). Also by using an
weak elderly women being killed, one feels sympathy towards Alyona making us wonder if
Raskilnokov killed her for the good of others or if he just wanted to be cruel.

Doina s multiple relationships with people including, Luzhin and Svidrigaïlov make subplots for the
novel and they also help Raskolnikov in deciding to murder the pawnbroker. She gets into a
relationship with Svidrigaïlov because she belives that he can save him, although this relationship
fails. Luzhin comes around and she gets into in a relationship with him to get out of poverty, while this
relationship almost ends in marriage but sadly it ends. One can see that Doina really doesn t care about
Luzhin, after he says, I can t just go and get married for the sake of the future (Dostoyevsky 344).
After these failed relationships, she meets the true love of her life

The Abortion For A Minor
Support legislation and opposition Relating to notice of and consent to an abortion for a minor.
Abortion for minors is a major public health concern in the United States. There are more than
300,000 births to teens each year, increasing the risk of both the mother and the baby s health.
Abortions on minors have raised political, clinical, social, and economic awareness. In order to make
effective changes to abortion for the minor one must produce empirical evidence, to evaluate policy
options for persons involved in public health policy and legislation. In January 2000, Texas enacted a
law requiring physicians to notify the parent before an abortion is done with a minor, or notifies at
least one parent of the intent to terminate the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only way for minors to seek abortion without involving their parents is to petition for a judicial
bypass, from the courts. Most States are now being applying the parental involvement of one or more
parent to be notified or consent before a minor daughter legally has an abortion. Some states require
one of two types of parental involvement, which involves notifying one or both Parent. So far about
38 states now required some type of parental involvement in a minor s decision to have an abortion.
Out of these 38 states, 21 of the states require one or both parents to give consent to the procedure, 12
require one or both parents be notified and 5 require both consent and notification before an elective
abortion can occur. Three of these require both parents to consent. The parental involvement laws
from the Court have clarified the legal position on abortion regulation making it difficult for a female
goes for an abortion. (Guttmacher, 2013). In Texas, the parental notification and consent laws had an
effect on birth and abortion rates for minors with notification laws reducing birth and abortion rate
with the 16 17 year old females. There is a decline in teen pregnancy in the United States with
ongoing attempts in the prevention through public policy and initiatives. Today about thirty nine states

The Bybee Torture Memo Essay
The Bybee Torture Memo
On August 1, 2002, Justice Jay Bybee submitted the Bybee Memo or the Torture Memo , which
describes the behavior that U.S. officials must exercise when interrogating outside of the continental
U.S. as governed by the UN Convention Against Torture. Although this memo was rendered
inoperable by the Bush Administration in 2004; for years, it gave license to American troops to inflict
cruel amounts of pain, effectively torture upon their prisoners under the label of coercive interrogation

These weaknesses, however, are minimal compared to the strengths of his argument.
Hatfield contends that torture is so fundamentally wrong that it requires no written prohibition. At the
core of morality, it is simply not acceptable. However, there are many international doctrines of peace
keeping which outright prohibit torture such as the Universal Declaration of Rights, the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Geneva Convention and so on (pg. 132). He feels that as a
lawyer, he is demoralized when other lawyers seek to revisit the legality of torture. However, the
United States has submitted a document, the Bybee Memo, which enacted a law contrary to these
accepted credos of behavior and these proponents of human dignity. ...what is clearly torture by any
moral standard is not torture under American legal standards (pg. 132). So how is it that one of the
world s largest democracies, can proclaim that coercive interrogation is not torture ?
The Bybee Torture Memo was crafted by a team of lawyers with purposeful intent in response to a
CIA query. Ultimately, someone (the President) wanted assurance, that contrary to world views,
torture was in some form permissible. The memo

The Effect Of The Mafia On Italy s Economy The ability of the citizens of a country to become entrepreneurs and stimulate the economy by starting up companies is essential for the success of a country. An indirect side effect of the mafia s impact on the Gross domestic Profit is the government s ability to aid small business growth. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, there are different types of Italian mafias, depending upon which region that they are located in and the market that they are exploiting. Italian organized crime is known all over the world, to the point that the term Mafia is now understood across the globe as referring to the organized criminal underworld. Literature on the subject is abundant, ranging from history, sociology and criminology to fiction and plain entertainment. The distinctive character, looks, habits, idiosyncrasies and jargon of the Mafiosi have been described, analyzed, explained and imitated. Apparently, everybody is familiar with Italian organized crime (Europol 4). The top three mafia organizations operating in Italy are Cosa Nostra, La Camorra and the Ndrangheta. Cosa Nostra is located on the island of Sicily as the Mafiosi s main activity consists of their forced protection and they have strong ties to Sicily s government. La Camorra is located in the region of Campania, but more specifically in the capital: Napoli. La Camorra s main focus is controlling the food and coffee markets, black market, as well as some drug trafficking. The Camorra clan, in turn, acquired from this relationship (1) considerable economic resources from the firms (2) the consequent systematic control of economic activity in the territorial area, the possibility of furnishing jobs and a marginal quota of the firm s income, and hence widespread social consensus and even open legitimacy; (3) finally, through the politicians, they secured the necessary institutional cover, in particular with the police and with possible intervention in eventual judicial proceedings. This original relationship between the Camorra and illegal non organized activities has not fundamentally changed over time, but has become stronger and deeper as a result of two factors. The argument is based on a crucial differences between the past and the future. Simply put, the future is a open for things to happen without our prior knowledge of what is to come. It is possible to look back at the past and reflect on what has happened but the same cannot be said for the future. We are able to influence what the past became but we cannot literally change the past even if we admit the possibility of time travel. The asymmetry between past and future is illustrated by the fact that we do not deliberate about what has happened but we do so about what is to come. One can certainly question about whether the past action that we have chosen is the best, but one can also both question what future acts would be best as well as which future action should be performed, making the future open in a way the past is not. When an individual is using free will, what is happening is that the person is given a range of different opinion and selecting the best course of action, each option is possible given the past and the laws of nature. This view of free will is often called the Garden of Forking Paths ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Voltaire s Theory Of Optimism Candide, published in 1759 by Voltaire, is a satirical novella criticizing the type of European Civilization Voltaire grew up around. Voltaire is known for his literary works mocking the time period he lived in, especially when it came to their religious beliefs and the aristocracy he was surrounded with. Due to Voltaire s experiences in Paris with European Society, Candide showcases his contempt for organized religion, noble rank, and optimist philosophy. Candide, the illegitimate son of a Baron s sister, lives in the Baron s castle, studying under the philosopher Pangloss. Pangloss teaches Candide his theory of optimism, keeping Candide innocent to the world beyond the castle. He thinks that the castle is the best castle there is, and that everything happens for a good reason, a belief that Pangloss has instilled in him. Cunégonde, the Baron s daughter, has caught the eye of Candide, and when they are found in a compromising romantic position, he is tossed out of the Castle. From there, Candide sets out on many adventures, most having unfortunate ends, giving Candide a taste of the reality he never got from castle life and studying under Pangloss. He first enlists as a soldier, but is soon flogged for being a deserter. He escapes to Holland where he is taken in by a kind Anabaptist, and discovers Pangloss as a deformed beggar who has contracted syphilis. Nearly 7 million immigrants took up residence in the country, and literacy rates skyrocketed. Argentina was number 1# in the exporter of many products, including beef. But, in the decades that followed, Argentina s development lagged behind the rest of the world, stagnant and lacking progress. Argentina dropped from 7th to 54th most developed country in the world. Mr. Walsh, the plaintiff s attorney, is presenting the issue of actual knowledge of intoxication. Mr. Walsh is arguing against summary judgment based on two reasons. First, Indiana Courts have held that when a reasonable inference of evidence and circumstances of a case could result in more than one conclusion, summary judgment is inappropriate. Second, the jury could infer that the bartender had actual knowledge of the visible intoxication of Mr. Hard when he last served him alcohol. Ms. Babot is arguing against summary judgment based on approximate cause due to three reasons. First, there are reasonable inferences that a jury could make in favor of the plaintiff. Second, the injuries to Mrs. White were the reasonable and foreseeable consequences of serving an intoxicated patron. Thirdly, a criminal can be the intervening act that does not break the chain of causation because the act is reasonably foreseeable. In the beginning of the 20th century, women began to look boyish, thin and less feminine. They did not wear dresses or corsets, but favoured pants because they were more suitable for working. In the time of the Second World War, the ideal women changed again. Women were to be strong yet feminine, and began to have curves like Marylin Munroe. • 27. Internal Conflicts In Alice Walker s The Color Purple As individuals, we must understand ourselves and our personal struggles. As part of a society, we must understand how we fit into the world around us. Consequently, we must then bridge the gap between these two ideas. In the film adaptation of Alice Walker s The Color Purple, the main character, Celie, discovers her individuality overtime, as she eventually finds her niche among others (Spielberg, 1985). Through incorporating both internal conflicts and how a person relates with the external society, The Color Purple acts as a transitional piece, linking the unit of conflicts of self to the unit of conflicts involving groups. The Color Purple examines several aspects of unit one, including the difference between singular or multiple perspectives and the subsequent impact of adding more perspectives to an issue. As discovered in unit one, the principle of Occam s Razor, which usually favors a singular perspective, holds that entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity, but this thought process often oversimplifies the issue by disregarding certain aspects or details of a situation (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, 2015). As if adhering to Occam s Razor, Celie in the film, rather than further complicate her situation, chooses the path of least resistance by living the majority of her early to mid life viewing her circumstance with a singular perspective in which the society holds that she has no choice, but to conform to its sexist expectations (Spielberg, 1985). However, Sofia and Shug provide new, additional perspectives that fuse together in the formation of a cyclopean image, which gives Celie greater awareness of her situation (The Cyclopean View, n.d.; Spielberg, 1985). Through gaining these multiple perspectives, Celie realizes the abuse she suffers and decides to take initiative against them, eventually embracing her inner individuality and no longer submitting to the whims of every man she encounters, as society would expect a black woman of the time to do (Spielberg, 1985). By unveiling the power of multiple perspectives in comparison to a singular perspective, The Color Purple coincides with a predominant topic of unit one. By using logos in his writing, he gains credibility with his intended audience. It is only after reading chapter six that the reader on hindsight can compare the peacefulness in the first chapter to the tension in the last chapter, this creates tension as the reader is now well aware that one of Steinbeck s narrative techniques is that the movement goes from harmony to discord. She looks beyond her own sins and has a sudden realization that in fact anyone has the ability to transgress just as easily as she did. Hester is terror stricken by the revelations of knowing that others sin. The fact that she is terror stricken suggests that she is now looking at the world around her in a way she never previously had. Hester is overwhelmed with terror to realize that people are genuinely immoral. This scene highlights a major concept of brooding romanticism: a character having a tragic confrontation with the universe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the final paragraph, those with vulgar minds are credited with contributing grotesque horror to their conception of the scarlet letter. However, this grotesque horror is not so grotesque after all. Hawthorne reveals that the scarlet letter being a symbol of infernal fire is more of a reality for Hester than an actual rumor. Associating the scarlet letter with something infernal implies that it can be connected to the idea of Hell. This yields a very dark and dire perspective of reality for Hester, and the connection of Hester to Hell through the scarlet letter epitomizes the brooding Romantic inside of ... You Cannot Trust Fast Food Companies We have all seen those advertisements that show glorious looking hamburgers that look like are simply exploding with tasty goodness, but how many times has our food actually looked like the advertisement? In my experience, that number would be zero. These advertisements are meant to trick our minds into thinking fast food is much better than it is in reality. Although, this argument could be made about just about any company in this age of brand personification, but just because other companies do this does not mean its ethically sound. In addition to that fast food is an item that is potentially harmful to ones health so there is a difference between Nike running an embellished advertisement and a fast food chain running an ... Fast Food Nation references a discontinued advertisement run by the cigarette manufacturer Camel, which displayed a hip, cartoon camel that was used to sell cigarettes. Fast Food Nation states, a 1991 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that nearly all of America s six year olds could identify Joe Camel, who was just as familiar to them as Mickey Mouse (Schlosser). Fast Food Nation talks about another study that found one third of the cigarettes illegally sold to minors were Camels. Children are very easily influenced and fast food companies are quick to take advantage of this fact. (Sclosser) Companies take advantage of children for a couple of reasons with the first being the advantage of brand recognition or branding . When we are young we make strong connections to things that influence us, such as the comfort a McDonalds hamburger may bring. Companies know this and by creating a fun atmosphere that is kid friendly they can create this connection that can last for a lifetime. Fast food restaurants use kid friendly items such as the playland, kids meal, and toys that come with the kid s meals. Inventions such as these were created to draw the easily appeased mind of a child into the restaurant. The Industrial Waste Management Practices INTRODUCTION: Huge plants which operate in the industry of light, chemicals and other heavy industries, although providing substantial employment and improving the economy, contribute to a lot of aquatic pollution . Unless the industrial waste management practices are regulated and monitored for sensitive water bodies around them, they pose a significant contamination risk. Locating a resourceful site, providing facilities along with industrial waste and operational management practices are needed to minimize this risk. The most commonly affecting industrial waste includes petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, surfactants, toxins and/or salts, which pollute surrounding water bodies, making them unsuitable for most of the water needs and harming the aquatic life therein. Algal blooms and oxygen deficit are the result of excessive nutrients found in the waters. Industrial wastes are also known to pollute underground water too which increase the cost and risk of cleaning/treating sewage. Industrial pollutants such as oxygen scavengers may corrode pipes and equipment in the sewerage collection system and in treatment plants. Greases and suspended matter can cause pipe blockages and odors. These approaches tend to focus on the lives of individuals as told through their own stories. The importance and focus within such approaches is in the narrative, usually based on both what and how it is narrated. The audience validates narrative research. Being a very useful tool and all, narrative method may not always be strong enough to stand alone as a central piece of evidence in concluding a point. The narrative method allows for an intimate look into the emotions, thoughts and experiences within a story based on the fact that another has witnessed such or intern through another s work along for a great picture to be established. Being easily able to validate a claim or narrative account through another is also a huge benefit of the method making it easier for the truth to come out and harder for lies to see the light. Personal narratives and information gained from narrative methods tend to come from truthful sources based on not wanting to tarnish individual s credibility, and not seeing a reason in creating lies and misleading information. Nevertheless, many problems can also be seen within the method harder and less likely to prevent. The limited perspective is detrimental in the sense that only that one perspective s views through emotion and feeling are used to describe the situation if there had only been one account. Unless there are multiple viewpoints from different individuals who think and act differently put together to create one image from all different sides, which isn t very practical to do. The narrative method also creates a restricted view in the sense that anything the reader does not know, you don t know. • 41. Response Paper On Rituals Response Paper #2 By Yaffa Segal From my understanding, a ritual is something that occurs more than once and has a meaning behind it. For example, a prayer. A more basic example could be brushing your teeth every morning after you wake up. Rituals are used both by humans and animals. Animals often have mating rituals. Humans have been performing rituals since the earliest of times for a variety of reasons. In the Stone Age, rituals could have been used to communicate with gods or dead ancestors. They could also have been used to mark different times of the year. For example, the different seasons. Rituals were a form of symbolic activity. Some rituals even involved masks or other carvings. Perhaps there was even a ritual for making a carving. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We use many forms of expression in this ritual. First of all, there are certain prayers that are said in synagogue. The prayers take a lot longer than normal, and generally finish around 2:30pm. On both the first evening and the second evening we eat simanim, which are symbolic foods. The first is honey in order to pray for a sweet new year. The custom is to dip an apple in honey. Another food is carrots so that G d will nullify any bad decrees. We eat beets so that our enemies will be removed. Another food is the head of a fish. Not everyone eats it, as many do not find it appealing. However, most people have a tiny piece from it. This is to symbolize that we be like the head and not the tail; always moving forward, not backwards. We eat leak (or cabbage) so that those who want to hurt us will be cut off. Other symbolic foods include dates, gourd, beats, and pomegranate seeds. We say a blessing on each one. One Rosh Hashanah, we wish others a shanah tova which means a good year. Rosh Hashanah is a time for judgement. G d writes your fate for the year. On Rosh Hashanah it is written and on Yom Kippur (about a week later) it is sealed. On Rosh Hashanah we are praying that G d will give us a sweet, new year and that nothing bad will happen to us. A major part of Rosh Hashanah is to blow the shofar, which is a hollowed out ram s horn. This shofar is a wake up call for us in order to remind us to wake up and repent for any of our wrongdoings. Although I have celebrated Rosh Hashanah every year since I was born, I actually do not know the origins of it. Economic development requires the government s dedications, incentives, vision, and leadership (Morgan, 2011). Smart economic development, on the other hand, leverages technology to increase efficiency, and reduce cost. It requires the government s dedications, incentives, vision, and leadership. Public Wi Fi, for example, can be used as a tool to connect business and citizens by supporting business transactions. Private investments and businesses play key roles in ensuring a strong economy (McConnell, Brue Flynn, 2009). The goal of economic development is to reduce unemployment, create jobs, lower poverty, lower crime rate, and increase income, which may lead to a strong economy, better quality of life, and prosperity. Figure 2 illustrates the economic development process map. Community Planning, on the other hand, is a strategic process of creating innovative solutions to solve the community challenges, protect, and preserve the community s assets (infrastructure, attractions, business, utilities, libraries, schools, personal properties, and the people). The Color Red in American Beauty Essay The Color Red in American Beauty The beauty that addresses itself to the eyes is only the spell of the moment; the eye of the body is not always that of the soul. George Sand hit the nail right on the head when he said this in 1872. Appearance versus reality has been a central theme in many American creative works including the film American Beauty. American Beauty is a film that delves into your typical, middle class suburban American home and slowly uncovers all of the abnormalities that lie within. But all have flaws, the rose has thorns to prick, Angela has her fear of being ordinary and the Burnham s home, well it too is cursed with the reality that they are a dysfunctional family. Red roses become not only a motif in the film; they come to represent symbols. They are prevalent in almost every scene. They are in the garden; almost every room in the house has a bouquet of brightly colored roses in a vase. They are the centerpieces to the dining room table. This table becomes a motif in the film as well, the family has its nightly dinner ritual and over the course of the movie we see a delineation of the family at this table. Rose petals are the symbol of sex as well, they are seen surrounding Angela for Lester, they burst out of her blouse, they pop out of his mouth after he fantasizes of kissing her and they fall from the ceiling onto his face when he pictures her above his bed. Female Roles In Crime And Punishment Essay Female roles In Crime And Punishment Love resurrected them; the heart of one contained infinite sources of life for the heart of the other (Dostoyevsky 521). Crime And Punishment is a novel about one man, Raskolnikov; this novel follows his life after committing a terrible crime, murder. This novel shows the mental and physical affects that play on his body after committing such a crime. In the novel Crime And Punishment, Dostoyevsky uses Alyona, Sonia and to drive the plot of the novel. In the beginning, the first female character you see is Alyona, an elderly pawnbroker. Alyona is the reason for the murder and the brutality that was put into the murder. Alyona is murdered because she cheats others less fortunate than her; she also abuses poor and helpless Lizaveta. This can been seen when Raskolnikov hears the student say that She was a complete slave and went in fear and trembling of her sister, who made her work day and night, and even beat her (Dostoyevsky 61).
