 Nonverbal communication is the transmission of
messages through a nonverbal platform such as eye contact, facial
expressions, gestures, posture, and the distance between two individuals.
 Non-verbal communication is different from person to person and
especially from one culture to another.
 To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the
way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our
communication with others.

 Russian culture has a long and rich cultural history,
steeped in literature, ballet, painting and classical music.
 There many variations between Pakistani and Russian
culture.
 So when you’re traveling to Russia it’s always important
to study their culture and communicate well with
Russian people.
 There are some Western body language habits that
Russians consider quite rude.

4. Greetings
 The handshake is appropriate in Russia.
 Make confident eye contact along with a firm handshake, both as
greeting and as a farewell.
 Greetings are generally formal in Pakistan. The most common greeting
among Pakistanis is “As-Salamu-Alaykum”. But unlike Russia it’s rude
to look someone directly in the eye while talking to them.
 Well-acquainted men hug each other. However, when greeting
strangers usually shakes hands and respectfully places the right hand
over the heart afterwards.

5. Hand Gestures
 The ok sign is considered a very rude gesture both
in Russia and Pakistan.
 Making a circle with the tip of your thumb and
index finger is considered rude.
 Don’t make a “fig”. A “fig” is another hand
gesture that is rude to Russian people.

6. Hand Gestures
 In Pakistan Pounding one’s fist into a hand
or stroking one’s beard/moustache signals revenge.
 Tapping your hand on your head can be interpreted as meaning you feel
disdain for the person you are talking to.

7. Personal space
 Don’t stand too far away.
 Russian people tend to stand closer to each other during conversation.
 Stand a bit closer than you normally would if you’re talking to a Russian
person and want to appear personable; otherwise you may come across as
cold or uninterested.
 Pakistanis also stand closer to their subjects while communicate. However,
more distance is kept between those of opposite genders.

8. Eye Contact
Don’t keep your hands in your pockets.
Don’t slouch.
Don’t put your shoes on the seats.
Put on your best face.

9. Expressions
 Russians, particularly men, often have a serious
front towards strangers that softens once they build familiarity.
 While they are known to be very animated with friends, smiles are not often
exchanged between strangers on the street.
 Same like Pakistanis tend to have quite a serious front and may not smile at
strangers often.
 There is an old idea that people who smile for no reason must be
simpletons.

10. Physical contact
 To reach out and touch another person during is sign
of confidence in the relationship in Russia.
 Strong physical affection is generally only seen between couples of
opposite genders.
 In Paksitan, It is common for people to be physically affectionate with
those of the same gender.
 Public displays of affection between opposite genders is are considered to
be very inappropriate.
