A Bildungsroman In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet
A Bildungsroman is a novel in which the psychological and moral aspects of the
main character develop. Such is the case with Hester Prynne from Nathaniel
Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter. Hester Prynne is a young and beautiful lady who
is married to an old scholar, Roger Chillingworth. He sends Hester to live in the
New World while he finishes off his affairs in Europe. While Chillingworth remains
in Europe, Hester has an illicit affair with Arthur Dimmesdale, a clergyman. When
Chillingworth finally arrives in America, he finds Hester standing on a scaffold
with a child in her arms, wearing a bright red A on her chest, being punished for

Throughout the next seven years, Hester helps the people of the Puritan society by
sewing clothes and donating them to the poor. However, the people appreciated
her help but never gave her the respect she deserved. In Chapter XIII Another View
of Hester, Hawthorne writes, They said that it meant Able; so strong was Hester
Prynne, with a woman s strength. (167) which explicitly states the new meaning of
the letter Therefore the people finally recognize her contribution to the society, She
was self ordained a Sister of Mercy; or, we may rather say, the world s heavy hand
had so ordained her,... Such helpfulness was found in her, so much power to do, and
power to sympathize, that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its
original signification. (167). It is an interesting use of diction by Hawthorne when he
uses the word refused, because it suggests that the people deliberately choose to not
interpret the letter as a punishment but rather as a shorthand for able. Thus, the the
meaning of the scarlet letter changes from a punishment for adultery to a symbol of
strength, and Hester changes from a proud young lady to a generous and helpful

A clear national identity leads to a strong sense of national pride and patriotism
(Hauss 2003), which in turn leads to higher rates of happiness, cohesion and stability
among the country s inhabitants (Write and Reeskens 2011). A lack of a clear

of Marvell s best poems, it masks extraordinary subtlety and complexity beneath a
surface of smooth and deceptively simple octosyllabic couplets. It is, in fact, as
perfect an example of the metaphysical mode as anything by Donne and, for all its
cool and witty tone, and passionate lyrics.
John Donne, (1572 1631) is considered the greatest of all metaphysical poets. Donne
was educated at Oxford, Cambridge and Lincoln s Inn. His works of this period,
included some of his songs, sonnets (written as late as 1617), problems and
paradoxes, which consisted of cynical, realistic and often sexual lyrics, essays and
verse satires. Donne s court career was ruined by the discovery of his marriage in

Analysis For the first part of the lab, our goal was to calculate the time constant, пЃґ,
of an RC circuit. We made an RC series circuit and connected it to the Rigol wave
generator to produce a square waveform for current. Then, we collected data of the
voltage across the capacitor at different points in time using a myDAQ and the

In this paper I will discuss the logical problem of evil and how it seems to reject the
existence of God as an omni 3 being. I will first layout the logical problem of evil,
and then I will explain why it succeeds in disproving the existence of God. I do this
through pointing out the contradictions between the definition of Godas an omni 3
being and the problem of redeemed and unredeemed evil. As well as by proving
that admittance of evil in any way when in reference to the choices of God
invalidates the omni 3 definition of God. I will address claims from those who
believe in God about justification of evil as well as the concept and depth of human
understanding.
The logical problem of evil is almost as old as the concept of an omni 3 being as the
one true God. God in this context being a mix of the Judeo Christian belief that God
is the Greatest Conceivable Being (GCB). Being the GCB implies 3 things: God is all
good (Omnibenevolent), all knowing (Omniscient), and all powerful (Omnipotent),
this is commonly referred to as omni 3. This argument boils down to a simple three
part argument structure:
1. If God, as an omni 3 being, exists then evil can not exist at all.
2. Evil clearly exists.
3. As a result, God as omni 3 can not exist.

profession, however they are used on a daily basis. May it be negotiating with your
children, partner/spouse or the rest of your family s member, negations skills are very

For my future study I would like to research how these articles effects the general
public s view of African American athletes. I would do this by surveying groups of
classrooms, students around campus, and showing them athletes. I would show them
both African American athletes and White Athletes. I would ask them how they feel
about these athletes, why they feel this way about them, and what have they heard
about them in the media. After collecting this data, and gathering my conclusion from
it, I would like to go back and do another survey. I would go to classrooms of students
and show them positive media and tell them the good things that African American
athletes have done. I would give them the same survey asking how the feel about
these athletes, why they feel this way, and what they have heard about them in the
media. To further explore this belief future research would have to be conducted that
tested and compared subjects racial attitudes toward both a positive and a negative
television portrayal of African Americans. In attempts to further examine racial
attitudes and media portrayals, this same study could be done with the addition of a
pre test that evaluates media portrayals as being either negative or positive. In
addition, future research could expose subjects to repeated treatments or media of

Until high school she was a follower. She was homeschooled until sixth grade and
came into public school as an underdog. Sami was sweet and shy but liked by
everyone. In high school she got in with my group of friends which helped her
gain confidence. Everyone loved that her and I share not only the same first name
