The group chose R&B as their genre because it is diverse with different styles of songs. They selected the solo artist Jasper Vo to draw from personal experiences. The song "Nirvana" by Sam Smith was chosen because it has meaningful lyrics and no existing music video. In the proposed video, Jasper Vo and his romantic interest are shown arguing and spending time together while hints are given that they each have other partners. Their outfits will transition throughout to indicate time passing and changing levels of comfort.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. THE GENRE WE CHOSE...
We chose R&B as our genre because this genre is very diverse and
there is a range of songs at our disposal. Each song is very different
and hold different meanings
They also vary from upbeat songs to very slow songs and we thought
we could challenge ourselves with this genre as it’s not a genre
everyone would pick.
It was a process of elimination, we went through the genres of music
and got rid of the genres that we didn’t like and we also wanted to
stray away from what everybody else was doing. As we thought we
could target a different audience that is not commonly thought about.
In most R&B songs the both the females and males are sexualised
and we are looking to subvert these stereotypes in our music video as
we want to show a different side to the genre.
3. OUR ARTIST...
We chose to have an solo artist compared to a group as most of the
artists in the R&B genre are solo as they tend to draw from their
personal experiences
We didn’t use a stage name for our artist as normally in this genre
artists do not use a stage name and this could be because they want
to relate more to their audience.
Also usually artists use a stage name when they want their name to be remembered
easily by fans
4. WHAT SONG WE
CHOSE…AND WHY?We chose a song titled Nirvana by the
artist Sam Smith…
We chose this song as we
wanted to take a different
approach to everyone else and
wanted to chose a song with a
solid meaning behind it. while
straying away from the
contemporary pop music in
which is just a song that is
upbeat and doesn’t really have a
strong significant meaning like
this song does.
We also chose this song
specifically from our artist as it
does not have a music video and
only an audio and we didn’t
5. THE MEANING OF THE
SONG..?
Nirvana is regarded as the upmost spiritual enlightenment in the
Buddhist religion in which you gain freedom from reincarnation and
karma.
Through analysis of the lyrics we found that overall meaning of the
song is that there is someone in a relationship and they know they
aren’t going to last but they enjoy the sweet serenity of the moment
and enjoy the love they have to offer.
6. HOW ARE WE GOING TO
PROMOTE OUR ARTIST…
We are going to use social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook
because it means you are closer to the fans and you can also start to
gain a large fan base. We are also going to use Snapchat and
Instagram so that the fans feel closer to the artist as well as use it to
promote the song
We are going to use YouTube as our main platform as it is one of the
biggest streaming sites and it will give our artist the chance to appeal
to a mass audience. We are going to use forced advertising on
YouTube as it will give us the best chance to expose our artist.
7. Target Audience:
We chose the age range of 16-23 year olds, we chose this age range because it is
common for young adults to consider starting a love relationship. Anyone over the
age of 23 typically have come out of University and things such as relationships can
be formed and therefore might have experienced times in which the end of the
relationship was inevitable and they wanted to just enjoy the feeling and moment of
the love they felt.

8. INITIAL IDEA FOR OUR MUSIC
VIDEOWe got inspiration from the music video for “We found love” by Rihanna as the video
showcases a couple that knows that they don’t have a lot of time together, but they
enjoy the moments they have together much like the lyrics from the song of our choice.
We also got inspiration from Beyoncé's “Me, Myself and I”
We are going to have a mixture of narrative and performance as we feel it would
illustrate the lyrics better and more closely fit to the codes and conventions of our
genre as we can then showcase the emotion of the song
In our music video the couple is going to be in the room and are having an argument
and then it changes to a different part of the room where there is a different part of the
argument going on but we are going to edit it to make it look like it’s one continuous
shot. They then go their separate ways and walk down a street (during this we switch
between the two). Throughout the video we are going to give the audience subtle hints
that they have another partner and the very end they will go to their significant others
When it says “in your arms” they will be in each others arms.
Each chorus is a flashback of happy memories.
9. ARTIST IMAGE
For our artist Jasper Vo, we decided that a more relaxed and minimal look
would be best for his image. We’ve decided on this as we felt as though any
items of clothing that are too colourful or flashy will distract from the
meaning of the music video and the lyrics, in which we are attempting to
present.
To the left we have constructed a mood board for
the items of clothing in which we think is suitable.
From the colour palate of, grey, white and black, it
is evident that we intend to not venture from the
minimal approach. However, despite it being
minimal it still displays a sense of comfortability.
Mood Board
10. In the Music Video the artist clothes will
transition throughout the duration of
the footage, from comfortable to a more
so professional image. Despite the
change in wear we will continue to have
a neutral colour scheme throughout.
We have decided on changing outfits
through different scenes in the music
video because, it will help decipher the
time difference between different shots.
Also because, the progression from
comfortable to a more professional
choice in clothing will manifest the
characters comfortability with other
characters roles within the music video.
11. For the females role in the music video she will
also display a transition in clothing, however
unlike the artist she will first be displayed in
items in clothing that depict her as a sweet, such
as skirts and light tones and colours. However, it
will still contain an element of comfortability to
present how she feels when with the artist’s
character.
Closer to the end of the music
video the female role will be
shown to have more layers on,
such as a coat, hat, scarf etc.
This will display her
attempting to conceal herself
in some form from her
original partner. The colour
palate will also shift from light
airy tones to harsh and blunt
tones which will be
emphasised through the use
of texture.
