AUDIENCE RESEARCH
By Youssef Daoud
WHY USE ONLINE SURVEYS?
• The time span needed to complete an online survey project is on average two-thirds shorter than that of
traditional research methods. Because information is being gathered automatically, you don't have to
wait for paper questionnaires to come back to you
• The results of the online survey are ready to be analyzed at any time. View results in real-time so you can
act quickly, create graphs for reporting, export data for further analysis and share your results with
anyone.
• Its more accurate, the margin of error is greatly reduced with online surveys because participants enter
their responses directly into the system.
Q1 – How old are you?
I sent out a survey, which has 10
questions to be answered for all sixth
formers and members of staff, after
gathering 44 responses I found out that
most of our audience is between the
age of 16 – 18. The reason for having a
capped age range, is because the sixth
formers are within the ages of (16 – 18)
and having 19+ for staff. Not only that
our music production has some
elements, such as alcohol, which
cannot be seen by the younger viewers.
This shows us who will be watching
our music video and who possibly
enjoys it the most.
Q2 – Are male or female?
The first couple of questions are
closed questions, where we just want
to gain understanding of who the
person is, also these are not very long
when answering questionnaires so
people will take time to answer them.
Asking them whether you are a male
or female will give us an idea of what
sex will be most interested in our
genre, which is R&B/Rap. The results
show us that 50% of male, 50% 0f
female responded to the
questionnaire, this shows us that
both sexes are interested in the genre
of R&B/Rap.
What's your favourite type of music to listen to?
Referring back to the response, I
was amazed with the results,
because R&B had a response of
11% whereas Pop and other genre
of music had a much higher
percentage response with pop
having 24& and other having 36%.
I wasn’t quite sure why we got this
response as I thought people
within our age gap (16 – 18) would
pick Hip Hop or R&B, as result of
this we should of included a
comment box in order for us to
know why they chose their
favourite genre.
How do you most often access your music video?
Looking at the response for this question I
wasn’t surprised at all with the results as
YouTube had the highest response with a
percentage of 60% and Spotify being second
with a percentage of 18%. This is because in
todays day and age everybody has smart phones
and as result have easy access to YouTube and
Spotify
How do you hear about new music?
This question shows us that most
people hear their music from YouTube
notifications which had the highest
percentage of 52% and second being
Social media including twitter, this
comes as no surprise to me as social
media is the biggest platform where
artists can interact and promote their
music.
What style of music video do you prefer?
This question showed us that 45%
of people who took part in our
survey chose a concept based video
as their preferable style of music.
Concept based video is when there
is no clear narrative or
performance, but a hidden
meaning within, this a result
brought up discussions within my
group whether or not to change
from a performance based style of
music to a concept based with no
narrative.
What do you like about music videos in your favourite genre ?
This was a positive response as 36% of people
preferred having a creative music video in
comparison to the rest. As a result of this my
group and I would come up with different
creative elements that we could include in our
music video, whether it will be location, shots,
props or a different style of performance in
order to enhance our music video.
What do you like about R&B music videos?
The reason for asking this question
it will give us an overall idea of
what would be preferred in our
music video whether it will be
Performance based, materialistic or
having an intriguing storyline,
which had the highest response a
percentage of 35%. This shows us
that people prefer having a storyline
or a performance based music video,
which fits perfectly with the idea of
our music video, which is a
performance based music video.
What narrative would you associate with the music
video Post Malone – “Too Young”?
We chose to ask this question in order for us
to get a idea of what narrative to associate
with the music video “Too Young” by Post
Malone. This question gave us open
responses of where people can give their
opinion on what narrative will best suit our
music video one response says “He’s around
friends having a good time, its very chilled
and vibey” This is positive as our narrative is
about our artist having a great time with his
friends and the fact that he doesn’t want to
die “Too Yooung”
What do you think about our narrative being about our artist
reflecting on his life and trying to get away from reality?
The reason this being our last question
is to show to our audience our initial
idea on what our narrative is going to
be about. We had a mixture of
responses some positive others
negative, these questions are very
beneficial in terms of feedback as our
audience was replying in detail on
which their opinion was taken on board.
