Producer(s): Eleanor West Production Title: Music Video
Brief: I am going to make a music video, which is very typical to other music videos that
are out, codes and conventions wise. However, include a narrative story line which has a
message within it to help out the target audience of teenagers and young adults.
Aim: My aim in this task is to create a successful appealing looking music video which has
been made for the song “hurt together” by Sia. I want my music video to be narrative
based with no lip syncing or performance value to it. To add to that I am aiming to have a
target audience of teenagers and adults as I feel they will understand the storyline more
than younger children.
Description of your intentions: The intentions I have for this music video is that I want my
music video to appeal to the audience that I am aiming for so that there will be more
people viewing it and hearing the song. This will then increase the success of the artist. To
add to that as I have chosen a reasonably short song I want it to include a lot of variations
of different shorts. For example when the song speeds up I want to include a lot of
quicker shots that flow together.
The main story line of my music video that I want to create is There are three people
within the music video, however they are all the same person at different stages within
her life. For example for the first few shots I want there to be a middle aged women
playing the piano that goes with the song I have chosen. Following on from these shot I
want there to be a transition between the first characters and then a teenaged character,
this character acts as if she is on a mission, where she is constantly looking in a variety of
different places. E.g. the woods, hills, London, fields. This character will have the most
time spent on her as I think it will make the music video more successful to have a main
teenage role. Finally there will be a younger girl who is waiting at the top of a hill looking
for something, Then one by one all the other characters we have met join together and
meet at the top of the hill. I wanted to tint all the shots with a certain character in a
different colour, for example blue for one character, yellow for another and red. This will
help to distinguish between all the different characters and their role, also the unity
between them all at the end.
I have chosen to plan my music video to be like this as I believe that It will then be more
diverse to different types of audiences. For example the younger audiences which are
interested in a storyline and the older audiences who can see the deeper message behind
what is initially viewed.
Target Audience: My target audience I think will be mostly mainstreamers as the artist I
am making a music video for (Sia) is a popular artist. The song I am choosing to do is a
pop/indie pop therefore my target audience is likely to be a fan base from these music
genres. I think my target audience will be in-between the ranges of young teenagers to
adults, this is because I think that the narrative music video will be able to attract a wide
range in people enabling my audience to be more diverse. To add to that I think that the
music video will be able to attract both men and women, however if I had to choose one I
feel that it is more directed towards women as the three main characters in my music
video will be women.
Similar Products: Other than different Sia songs which I am not dong a music video for, I
think that some other similar products can include:
Tom Walker - Fly Away With Me
Seafret - Oceans
Foster The People - Pumped up Kicks
Sam Smith - Too Good At Goodbyes
Selena Gomez - Bad Liar
The list of songs above I feel have the same tone about them as the song that I am doing a
music video for. The following list of songs are song that I have either collected
inspirations from or are music videos that I want mine to look similar to one of them.
AURORA - Runaway
Kodaline - Ready
The Lumineers – Cleopatra
Ed Sheeran - Happier
