Embryonic stem cells can be used for organ regeneration. They are derived from embryos or fetal tissue and can develop into many cell types. Cord blood, which contains stem cells, can also be collected after birth from the umbilical cord and placenta and cryogenically stored at -196°C for future use. Embryonic stem cells cultured in suspension can spontaneously form embryoid bodies, which mimic early embryonic development and allow the stem cells to differentiate into various cell types. Regenerated lungs have been transplanted into recipients and provided gas exchange for up to 6 hours after ventilation.
