Opening Paragraph Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of "Opening Paragraph Essay" poses a unique set of challenges
that require a delicate balance of creativity, precision, and strategic thinking. The very inception
of such an essay demands a profound understanding of the importance of a compelling opening
paragraph. The difficulty lies in capturing the reader's attention right from the beginning, setting
the tone for the entire essay, and establishing a strong foundation for the arguments or ideas that
will follow. The writer must navigate the fine line between being intriguing and informative,
avoiding clichГ©s while maintaining coherence and relevance. It's akin to orchestrating a
symphony where the initial notes set the mood for the entire composition. Striking this delicate
balance is a task that demands meticulous planning and a keen understanding of the nuances of
effective writing.
As the writer endeavors to articulate thoughts in the opening paragraph, they must grapple with
the challenge of making a lasting impression. Every word becomes a brushstroke on the canvas
of the reader's mind, and each sentence is a step toward building a persuasive and engaging
narrative. The difficulty is compounded by the awareness that a lackluster introduction can
potentially undermine the entire essay, making the opening paragraph a critical juncture that
requires careful consideration.
The struggle intensifies when attempting to infuse originality into the opening paragraph. The
ubiquity of certain phrases or approaches can make it challenging to stand out in a sea of essays
on a similar topic. The writer must navigate through the well-trodden paths of introductory
writing, striving to offer a fresh perspective or a unique angle that captivates the reader's interest.
In conclusion, composing an essay on the theme of "Opening Paragraph Essay" demands a
sophisticated interplay of skills. It requires the ability to balance creativity and structure, capture
attention without resorting to clichГ©s, and convey a unique perspective amidst a sea of similar
discussions. It's a challenging endeavor that calls for precision, ingenuity, and a thorough
understanding of the art of effective communication.

Realism In International Relations
Realism is not a new concept. Classical Realism has its roots firmly placed in
ancient Greece at the time of Thucydides where in the History of the
Poloponneasean War he wrote The strong do what they have the power to do, the
weak accept what they have to accept (Thucydides 1972: 402).
Thucydides is thought to explain the role of power within politics at this early stage
(Donelly, 2000) through to the time of Machiavelli in the 16th Century. Stanley
Hoffman is quoted as saying that the theory is ...probably the most distinguished
school of thought in the history of international relations (Hoffman, 1988 p.6). Whilst
Realism, as a concept, has helped to define International Relations by fostering the
notion that power is the only political gain to be wanted, Robert Gilpin sees it as a
... philosophical disposition and set of assumptions about the world rather than as
in any strict sense a scientific theory (Gilpin, 1984 p. 290). Realists are unified in
believing that Power and survival is fundamentally the most desired thing between
the universal actors: The States. The theory is built on a basis of pessimism and
that that politics is a tussle for both power and survival and labels politics on an
international scale as a series of recurrent conflicts among states with very little
prospect for change (Jackson and Sorensen, 2007). Whilst there are similarities which
bind the different veins of realism together, this essay will look at those different
veins within the
Medium As A Metaphor
This book is about Medium as a Metaphor, that means that we should not believe that
everything is as it may seem, that everything states for something. It is the history of
Message and the ways of transmitting it from the beginnings until now days, from
smoke signals and wall drawings until the modern technologies that Media uses now
days. I found it full of information presented in the funniest way.
Trying to see the American spirit, the author talked about different cities and what
ideas they represent. We must say that the author s arguments are funny especially
when he is talking about the President of the United States as being a movie actor and
we can link that to the show Saturday Night Live.

If they call me an entertainer , I say that s great. When a professor teaches with a
sense of humor, people walk away remembering .
The main point was that everything should be done in a funny way to influence the
masses.
For example, at our German class, we have many funny activities and games and we
have to get involved in order to obtain a good and pleasant result class this is the only
way we will walk away remembering .
The book speaks about Marxists, Freudians, LГ©vi Straussians and Plato four
influential thinkers of out times . They focused on the art of conversation and all the
techniques and technologies that allow people to exchange their ideas. Starting from
this idea we are introduced into the history of what is called this days conversation ,
sending a message and Media.
At the beginning people used smoke signals to communicate and this over time
turned into a complicated and complex way of communication. This main circle
can be divided into smaller ones. For example, when children are young they
communicate first by signs and by simple sounds to express what they wish or feel ,
at the age of 5 the child starts understanding and using simple words and over the
years they will develop the communication skills and improve their vocabulary every

Lincoln and His Generals by T. Harry Williams Essay
Lincoln and His Generals by T. Harry Williams
Harry T. Williams was born on May 19, 1909. When in college, he was encouraged
by a professor to study history. This professor s main interest was the Civil War era
and had a great effect on Williams. He attended Platteville State Teachers College
(later Wisconsin State University at Platteville) where he received a B.Ed in 1931.
Williams continued education into graduate school was mainly due to the lack of
work during the Great Depression. He went on to earn a Ph.M. in 1932, and Ph.D. in
1937, from the University of Wisconsin (Dawson 431).
Lincoln and His Generals was the breakthrough book for Williams who had only
written one book previously. This book provided him with many national ... Show

When Lincoln interacted with Scott, he showed a deference for Scott s age and
knowledge. Thus allowing Scott to share his skills, this humility was shored by
General McClellan. Lincoln later changes his approach towards McClellan, trying
to boost his confidence and courage. Williams continually shows McClellan as an
egotist, who eventually replaced Scott as General in chief. McClellan is depicted
as unsure, indecisive, self centered and fearful of declaring war. Lincoln
continually defends McClellan but is not afraid of tactfully sending criticism his
way. One could easily be lead to believe that Lincoln was more of a placator.
Williams shows us that Lincoln never hesitated in making difficult decisions based
on results. Lincoln s people skills are easily ascertained in Williams writings.
Lincoln seems keen at applying pressure as well as giving his generals a free hand
when necessary.
Williams shows an interesting side of Lincoln s patience that wears thin when there
are no early victories and from the lack of aggressiveness on the Union side.
Williams shows a gradual transformation on Lincoln s selection process. Initially each
general was selected on characteristics such as battle experience and political
backing. As the enemy holds out and there is inaction, Lincoln starts to doubt the
ability of his generals and starts to seek generals who can win without excuses.
Williams captures the pressures that are placed
The Farming Of Bones Poverty Quotes
The Pain of Massacre and Poverty In her novel, The Farming of Bones, Edwidge
Danticat creates scenes of personal trauma in Tibon s description of his capture and
Amabelle s beating. Danticat does an excellent job of humanizing the horrors of a
general massacre through the development of specific characters. The painful
memories that Danticat composes are extremely similar to Frank McCourt s
remembrances in his memoir, Angela Ashes, where he retells his childhood in
extreme poverty. Danticat writes two absolutely horrific scenes that Amabelle
encounters during her travels into Haiti. Amabelle and Sebastien, her future husband,
lose contact when they are separated by the Parsley Massacre. Amabelle is most
troubled by the idea that she does... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most thought provoking scene in the novel was the death of his sister
Margaret: Dad has the whiskey smell. The doctor examines the baby [...] She s
gone. Mam stays in the bed all day, hardly moving. Malachy [Jr] and I fill the twins
bottles with water and sugar. The twins are hungry [...] I boil sour milk in a pot,
mash in some of the stale bread, and try to feed them from a cup. They make faces
and run to Mam s bed, crying (McCourt). As a result of the father spending the
family s money on beer, the family suffers from malnourishment leaving the
children to find their own food. Even after the death of his own daughter, Malachy
is nowhere to be found, providing no signs of regret or of encouragement to his
wife and family. The most striking part of this image to me is that the twins are
drinking water and sugar rather than milk in their bottles. Because milk is so
commonplace, I had never envisioned it would be too expensive for an American
child to afford. These two novels evoke extreme emotions of hardship and adversity
that cause the reader to recognize the ills in society that they may not have fully

Intelligent Design
October 27, 2013
Take a moment to think about the world around you and all of its beauty. From the
ever flowing Mississippi River, to the ledges of the mighty Grand Canyon, or even
to the peak of Mt. Fuji there is an immense amount of things on this Earth that are
so incredible it is hard to believe science and chance created these magnificent
things. So what is the best explanation for these occurrences? I believe that these
occurrences scream of an intelligent designer which also leads us to the existence of
God. First I must explain what an argument for design is and then we will look at
Paley s Watchmaker Theory to give us better insight on this argument. Then I will
point ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stafford Betty and Bruce Cordell states that because it is so unlikely that our universe
was randomly generated, there must have been an intelligent designer. Betty and
Cordell point to the calculations of many renowned scientist to show that our unique
universe could not have existed if the slightest detail were any different than the way
it is now. They state, At this point we must ask ourselves what is easier to imagine
and thus to believe; that the cosmos entire history should have arisen from this self
creating and self explaining surd; or that a pre existing mind and power of vast
magnitude should have created the ingredients of the universe and triggered it at the
Big Bang? The second alternative seems a little bit more likely... (Betty and
Cordell 223). This argument goes off of inference of the best explanation in the
sense that logically it makes more sense and easier to believe that an intelligent
designer created the universe rather than a random explosion of matter that started
to expand and our universe was formed. This point also creates an objection
though, where did God come from and how did he create everything ex nihilo, or
out of nothing. The theist should properly respond to this objection by pointing to
the definition of God, a wholly good and omnipotent being. So by our human
perspective God or the intelligent designer should not be able to create himself, but
remember by omnipotent he can do all, for he is all powerful so there is
Ancient Greek Mythology
The Role of Mythology in the Lives of Ancient Greeks
The Ancient Greeks didn t understand many things in their lives. They wondered how
the seasons changed and what were planets and stars. All of these things were
mysteries to them, and the Greeks answered these questions through the myths of
Gods and Goddesses. Ancient Greeks believed that these Gods and Goddesses
controlled the elements of nature and helped their lives for the better through
everyday activities. Their powers were used to explain all that they cannot, from
everyday work to the forces of nature. Hestia was the goddess of the hearth, home,
architecture, domesticity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Persephone, being such a beautiful and
kind young woman was wanted by many gods, Hades included. One day, when she
was playing in the meadow, the Earth opened up and Hades appeared to take
Persephone. Accomplishing his task, Demeter searched the Earth for her daughter
until Hermes told her everything. It seemed that Zeus and Hermes watched the
abduction. After eating some pomegranate seeds, Persephone was to stay in the
Underworld one third of the year and return to her mother for four months. What
everyone didn t know is that Zeus may have helped plan it. Zeus one of the big
three, is the god of weather and siblings of Hades and Poseidon. Overthrowing his
father, Cronus, Zeus became ruler of Olympus as well as lord of the sky. His
weapon was a thunderbolt that he would hurl at whoever defied him. Using his
shield, Zeus could create anything of nature that related to the sky. He was
married to Hera, but was known for his infamous affairs with other goddesses. One
of his many affairs brought one of the most complex and important gods: Apollo.
Apollo was the god of many things including: music, art, poetry, oracles, archery,
plague, medicine, sun, light and knowledge. He was born out of an affair with the
Titan Goddess, Leto. Apollo was also known as kuoros, which means he is
beardless, athletic, and youthful. However, he is also known for many deaths with
his plagues in wars. Ironically, he also represents purity, he is able to cleanse all the
blood stained on bodies. All in all, Apollo was very powerful, and represented many
things in
Analysis Of The Book Hear The Wind Blow
Imagine becoming an orphan at the age of thirteen, having to take care of your
seven year old sister with an older brother fighting in the war. Haswell Magruder
experiences these hardships, along with starvation, arrest, and figuring out how he
will make due without a parental figure around. The novel Hear the Wind Blow, is an
interesting story that vividly describes every event to the reader, accurately informs
them of the troubles many people endured during the Civil War, and constantly keeps
them on the edge of their seats. The author, Mary Downing Hahnprovides a peek into
the world not only through words but through an actual map of Virginia, where the
events take place. While the map was very helpful, the words in the book still
express dramatic feelings, actions, and words of the characters in this fast paced
compelling read. Especially in the gory parts of the story were these emotions and
descriptions truly vivid in my mind. For example, after the Union armystormed into
the Magruder s house, Haswell s mother was taken upstairs by Captain Powell.
When Haswell and his sister, Rachel heard a gunshot and saw their mother stroll
out of the room covered in blood, they knew she killed him. Haswell eventually had
to go upstairs to investigate the scene and hide the body from the Captain s men.
While he did this, he described that the Captain s blood soaked the sheets and quilts
and pillows with crimson. His one remaining eye glared at me in fury. (Hahn 44)

Gender Roles And Stereotypes Have On Women
This paper focuses on gender roles in advertisements and further analyzes the affect
these advertisements have on women. Gender roles refer to the ways in which
individuals are expected to act based on their gender. These roles are very prevalent
in society, and because of this, are also depicted heavily in advertisements. Although
men do receive negative messages from advertisements, this paper focuses more on
women because of the amount of violence and stereotypes that are depicted towards
them in these ads.
What is the history of this topic?
Gender roles and stereotypes are forced upon individuals the moment they are
brought into the world. If an individual is born with female genitalia, they are
automatically labeled as girl and if they have male ... Show more content on

They are then told how to act and look based on these labels, and it is very hard to
escape these expectations. Girls are expected to become mothers and housewives and
be confident but also submissive. Boys are expected to pursue high paying careers
and marry a beautiful woman and be tough. This has been the case since the
beginning of time, with gender roles changing throughout time and throughout
cultures. The primary agents of socialization are parents, peers, social institutions,
and the media (Kimmel 2017). Media is a very important agent to study because
everyone is exposed to some form of media each day, and media is an easy and
accessible way for people to learn things about the world. It has been said that the
advertisement industry has been incorporating gender roles into their campaigns for
approximately 40 years (Browall Nd). Past research has found that in advertisements,
women are given the following attributes: passivity, lack of intelligence and
credibility, deference, shyness and helplessness (Browne 1998). This research has
also found that in advertisements, men appear to be constructive, powerful,
controlling, achieving and autonomous (Browne 1998).

The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on
November 7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip flop
between Gore and Bush, but because I had an IV in my arm which made it
impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that evening, I was diagnosed with Type One
Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in America. This was an especially
crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis an
autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans the June
before, and I had my Bar Mitzvah in September. According to the Jewish religion, I
had become an adult, and as such, I had decided to greet my new medical challenges

I found the latter to be the most satisfying, as many kids, especially the older ones,
were curious about the effects, but hesitant to ask an adult about the repercussions.
The most challenging thing to me was the number of parents who seemed to simply
give up. I saw a large amount of inaction; which in the case of diabetes is simply
unacceptable. I enjoyed educating and motivating these kids to make beneficial
lifestyle changes, so that good health rather than disease can help to define their
futures, as well as my own.
While I started my volunteer educational program, another man was well
ensconced in his own. Al Gore took up a cause that many people seemed to be
ignoring, our environment. The issues of climate change and general
environmentalism are very important to me. I see similarities between the
challenges of managing a clean environment for our globe and the challenges of
managing good health to me. Through concerted efforts to make routine changes
we have the capacity to live more ecologically friendly, and often healthier lives. I
have seen that with just a few adjustments, I can control my diabetes to the point
where most people do not even know I have it. Likewise, I believe that if we
commit to making fundamental changes in the way we go about our lives, we can
easily remedy several environmental issues we face today. By going to Berkeley Law
School and focusing on Environmental Law, I can apply my own life s lessons

A newborn will sleep for a total of around 15 to 17 hours a day, and by the age of
one will triple in weight (Berger, 2016, p.91). This is due to the fact that during
sleep a substantial amount of growth takes place, and is therefore why infants
spent so much of their early days sleeping, although sporadic. While growth is
occurring in nearly every aspect of an infant the development the strengthening of
muscles leads to the progression of motor skills. Motor skills are a learned ability
that allows regulated movements of a body part (Berger, 2016, p.100). The
movements of large muscle groups are the first to develop and is referred to as the
development of gross motor skills (Berger, 2016, p.101). Development usually
progresses from the head down and radiating from the center out to the periphery
(Berger, 2016, p. 101). In some cases reflexes help to develop and strengthen these
muscle groups. For example, when an infant is placed on their stomach they will
attempt to lift their head, and flail with their arms in order maintain vision and in
turn practice mobility (Berger, 2016, p.101). The lifting of the head processes to the
strengthening of the arms and legs and the ability to crawl and eventually the ability
to walk around the age of one (Berger, 2016,

that he needed to use his philosophy to work through and analyze how my
philosophy applies to the same situation followed by a brief summary.
There are numerous definitions of the word leadership and it can mean many things to
many people. For the purpose of this assignment I feel the best definition of
leadership is ...the art and science of motivating, influencing, and directing airmen to

I believe without integrity as the cornerstone in building any relationships, higher
levels of productivity cannot be obtained and ultimately with crumble. It is
important for your people to trust that you have their interests and goals at heart
while also laying out clear expectations early on in your command and trusting, yet
verifying all parties are meeting expectations. Throughout my life and previous
experiences I have witnessed firsthand how cohesive units are when these values
are incorporated into leadership philosophies and have also seen how detrimental it
is to the unit if they are not incorporated. An additional layer to integrity is that I
would never ask of others what I would or could not do myself. Nothing will
alienate a follower quicker than a leader who is unwilling to work as hard as or
demonstrate that they are willing to get in the trenches with the people they are
leading.
For my interview, I interviewed a peer who is a squadron commander at Grand Forks
Air Force Base, ND4. He stated his most challenging leadership issue came about
early on in his command. Within the first six weeks of his command, seven of his
Airmen failed their PT tests. One of these failures was an Airman facing a medical
evaluation board due to several back surgeries. The commander states he was
sympathetic to his situation but he had to remain tough since it was

One of the ideas listed in my Girl Talk Log relates to societal changes from the

able to have several different body types and still be able to achieve the hourglass
figure that was ideal in the time. However, in the twentieth century the micro bikini
forces girls to have the figure of a body type that less than 10% are able to actually

themselves based on the images they see. Nowadays, magazines and

into the nest. Then he began to spoon termites into his mouth. This new information
was shocking to the world. Goodall says that in school she learned that man was the

ability to control their emotions. Young bonobos that were orphaned at a young
age were less likely to show empathy toward others who are in distress, are less
likely to recover quickly from anger, and scored lower in social competency tests.
These results are consistent with the ability to regulate emotions in human
children. Some apes are able to communicate intelligently with humans effectively.
This is shown in a video clip from 60 Minutes where Ross Coulthart interviews
Penny Patterson, caretaker of an ape known as Koko. Patterson attained her PhD
in psychology from Stanford University in 1972 and has worked with Koko ever
since. She says that she has taught Koko how to sign one thousand words and that
Koko is able to understand an additional two thousand. Coulthart mentions in the
video clip that Koko has also created her own signs. For example, she did not know
how to sign the word ring, so she signed finger bracelet instead; she also called a
mask an eye hat. When she didn t know how to sign a word, she created her own
sign to be able get her point across. This shows that apes are not simply doing what
their caretakers are telling them to do to receive treats, but instead are actually
communicating and can comprehend what they are signing. Coulthart also explains
why there are still many people in the scientific community
Carpentry House
Life is like a building a house you have to put the pieces together yourself. A great
activity offered by my school, Ridgeview Middle School, is carpentry. First,
carpentry is a really fun class and anyone can join it. Second, it can be used as a
creative outlet to let my inner imagination flow. Last, it can help with my future, by
learningnew things for a future job. Carpentry can be a lot of fun for anyone who
wants to try it. As can be seen, carpentry is a really fun class for students at
Ridgeview Middle School. First of all, carpentry is a really fun class. In carpentry I
can build really amazing things whether it be a bird, house or anything I find, it is
really fascinating to build things. Also, carpentry can teach me about the many
different types of wood and tools they are to use for certain things. Carpentry is a
good thing to be able to use imagination and creativity to build whatever I want.
Second of all, carpentry is my creative outlet. It is what I do when I want to be

about it and in the future I can build homes or even public buildings for a living.
Carpentry is a really great trade that everyone should learn. A cousin of mine went
to school and became a contractor and building humongous buildings and he is
really good at it he had to practice a lot and take allot of classes to become that good,
but he did it an I believe that if I do the same I could be building big buildings. As I
have stated Carpentry can make my future brighter. In conclusion, carpentry is a
very good class that can be used for fun, a creative outlet, or I could just use it for
making a bright future for myself. I also believe that it can help me such as one day I
may need to build a building to store tools in or even build myself a garage. I believe

Urban Sprawl Research Paper

The Sprawling Suburbs Since the start of civilization, man has been on a constant
building trajectory; one that has seen vast swathes of farmland converted into malls,
skyscrapers, office parks, sports stadiums and virtually any concrete block that could
justify the need. With swelling populations and an ever insatiable appetite for built
space, the United States has almost transformed into a concrete jungle. Sprawl can be
understood as the uncontrolled spread of urban areas. It occurs when people start
moving from cities into neighboring areas within the vicinity of the city centers. This
results in areas with low population densities known as suburbs since urban sprawl
follows the pattern of uncontrolled development. ... Show more content on

Since it is a policy tool arising from the mechanisms of politics, smart growth critics
have often seen the rules as stifling. Citing the restriction of the use of one s land,
the critics say that the policy rules of smart growth developments to include walking
and bike paths often leave them with no lawn spaces (Knox, Paul and Linda 878). In
addition, the right to sell their land interferes with due to the regulations barring them
from developing large agricultural lands. Another barrier is the feeling that the value
of property may decrease due to the extra high density housing. People may thus
grow cold feet in developing such resources or moving to these areas (Christopher 2).
Also, crime and congestion may negatively affect the value of the assets arising from
commercial developments in previously residential areas. Some also feel that quiet,
non commercial areas are turned into noisy and chaotic industrial areas thus
disrupting the normal lives of the residents (Christopher
Medical Malpractice And Tort Reform
Medical Malpractice and Tort Reform
Medical Malpractice consists of negligence committed by a medical professional.
There are many possible events that can occur in the practice of medicine. When
physician make a medical error it could possible result in an injury. We often put our
faith in doctor to make the right medical decision for us. However, medical
malpractice does not always hold up since some patient can take advance of the
system. There are some defenses that exist when talking about the medical
malpractice.
Initial doctors are there to help aid person to feel better whether it s a common cold
or for other medical treatment. Doctors always try to do what right for the patient and
make sure they abide but all rules and regulations. However, some doctors be put in
situation that deemed unfair, likely do with the patient not satisfied with the doctors.
While some patients will try to create sometime false negligence there are some
defenses that help doctors through the medical malpractice claims such as the
contributory negligence, respectable minority principle and statute of limitations just
to name a few.
Defenses
Contributory Negligence allows the medical professional to seek out negligence of
the patients if the root of their injury was sought to be the blame of the patient and
not of the medical profession. Thomson Reuters (2015) explains that this negligence
can be due to the patient not following directions and mixing up the prescriptions or

Being a Teenage Mother Essay
It was a beautiful afternoon on the bay of Huntington Beach. Just what would be
expected of any regular day in California. The sun was shining inexplicably, as if it
knew what was coming, the sky was clear with one cloud across the horizon, the
sand was boiling and I could literally feel the bottom of my foot melting away. The
air was scented with the sweetness of spring and refreshed by gentle breezes. There
are families everywhere I look, playing endlessly with their kids, throwing beach balls
around, tanning their bodies until it turns to ebony, walking their precious dogs, and
riding their bicycles until their muscles deteriorated. The beach is adult s playground.

teenage mother is the single most difficult thing I have ever gone through. Having

the world of diapers, baby formulas, bills, doctors, appointments, and day care.
Amanda is head strong, independent, courageous, and once she has made up her

the world has put her way, and all the situations life has brought her, Amanda still

learned from her mistakes to make better judgements. I regret things that I didn t

Rise Of Organized Crime
Organized crime is an outcome of prohibition in the United States at the beginning of
the 20th century. The government was trying to uphold the Volstead Act of 1920, but
bootlegging rings continued to grow nationally as well as internationally. The
Wickersham Commission of 1930 led to a crackdown on political corruption and
began a repetitive prohibition period in which organized crimeleaders had a new way
to commit crimes and come up with a profit in the end. In the 1930 s Lucku
Luciano and Louis Leoke Buchalter created a crime group they called the Syndicate
which was made up of criminals all across the country and punished anyone who
violated their ways. Luciano ended up convicted, Buchalter was executed, and

Of course, there are the major gangs like the Crips and the Bloods, but gang violence
and activity is a problem in the United States today. Back in 2005, the Department
of Justice said there were at least 21,500 gangs and more than 731,000 active gang
members. Gangs are more popular in cities than rural areas, but gang violence is
said to be the cause of half of all homicides. So if it was 731,000 11 years ago, I am
sure the number has risen since then and will continue to grow if the U.S. does not
find a way to contain it. I think gang activity is something that law enforcement
does not spend enough time addressing. I live about 30 minutes from Washington,
D.C. and I know there is gang activity there, but I never hear anything about it. A
local area called Manassas has a gang called MS13, a mainly Hispanic gang and I
never hear anything about it. I think there are so many other things going on in the
world that gang activity tends to be overlooked. If we want gang activity to lower
we have to stop young people from continuing to join gangs. Gang members
describe gangs as a family, and to youth that is lacking a home environment, it may
seem like the right path for them to take. Parents have to be more in their kid s
lives and business to lower the chances of gangs continuing to grow. Having
interactive parents can build a child up to where they do not feel the peer pressure
to join a gang or need that in their lives to feel complete I think law enforcement

Why Democratic Parties Are Better Than Other Political...
America has always had a distinct political system, at times it could be calm and
peaceful, but in others it can be the complete opposite; such as the events that
occurred in this past election. Similar to controversial events, in politics there is
always going to be an opposing viewpoint; therefore there is always going to be an
opposing group of people. For that reason, that is how the party system began
between the Democrats and the opposing party known as the Whigs. Both parties
had opposing views and ideas, but some were stronger than others. Both parties had
their flaws and advantages which helped them hold the the upper hand in certain
time periods. In this essay I will name and explain the points each party supported,
the reasons why both parties opposed each other s points, and the reasons why the
Democratic partyhad the upper hand from the year 1828 to 1852.... Show more

would begin in 1828 with Jackson s presidential victory.(Give Me Liberty pg 377)
Led by Henry Clay; the Whigs would later initiate as a party to oppose the
Democrats and their beliefs.(Lecture 10) The reason for the opposition of both parties
was that they had different ideas; but the main reason was that the creation of the
Whig party was started by a group of people which initially started with intentions to
oppose Andrew Jackson s view in the Democratic party. The Whigs disapproved of
Jackson s views even more after after the attack on the national bank, and the
assumption that he vetoed something for his own personal choice rather than it being
unconstitutional .(Lecture 10 + GVL pg 389) Jackson believed that hard money
should have been the real form of currency which was also opposed by the

types of systems generally have a mechanism to batch data entry work so that it can

MEMORIES OF THE SLAVE TRADE (Rosalind Shaw) Memories of Slave Trade
challenges recurring claims that Africans felt and still feel no sense of moral
obligation concerning the sale of slaves, Shaw traces memories of the slave trade in
Temne speaking communities in Sierra Leone. While the slave trading past is
infrequently recollected in explicit verbal accounts, it is frequently made vividly
present in such structures as rogue spirits, ritual specialists visions, and the
symbolism of divination procedures. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and archival
exploration the author further contends that memories of the slave trade have molded
experiences of colonialism and postcolonialism, and additionally the country s ten

Diverse historical encounters are subsequently sedimented in what she calls
palimpsest memories . Since what happened later is inevitably molded by what
happened before and understandings of what happened earlier in history are shaped
by what happened thereafter, Shaw contends that memory pushes both advance and
counter directionally in time (ibid.: 15). Shaw makes the point that social and
cultural practices that show up as indigenous and bonafide were actually forged in
the long experience with Europe. Taking her prompt from prior deal with witchcraft
(Geschiere 1997), she contends that from the earliest starting point capitalist
modernity took plural forms in distinctive parts of the Atlantic world. In this
entrepreneur framework depicted by the trade of human life for wealth and power
divination is a manifestation of practical memory that reviews these exchanges. To
illustrate this point, regular vignette is put forth: As a white British woman in a
former British colony, she anticipated that will be connected with colonialism. At
the point when speaking with a diviner who was to reveal to her cowrie shell
divination, the seer let her know that she had an association with these articles and
their forces: You individuals are the managers of cowries , she said. There is no

Role and Function of Personnel Departments and Ways to...
Evaluation of the role and function of personnel departments within organizations and
discussion of ways to improve their strategic value to the organization.
Role of HR Departments
The HR model of the four HRM perspectives devised by Ulrich helps clarify the role
of Personnel Departments (University of Sunderland 2004, p. 75).
Strategic Partner
As Strategic Partner the HR Department creates an appropriate organisational
architecture with the target of achieving a match between factors such as culture and
work processes and the organisation s strategic goals. The focus is on results
orientation and performance enhancement (University of Sunderland 2004, pp. 75,

change agent). It is vital for corporate success that all four roles are considered as
equally important.
Problems, however, might not only arise because of operational and strategic
processes. The department also has to manage to align processes and people because
both factors equally contribute to the success of the HR Department and the
organisation.
Another critical point is that the HR role and activities are very comprehensive and
complex, maybe too comprehensive for one department, as it might be possible to
lose control over all the different processes.
HR Functions and Evaluation
HR policy formulation
The Personnel Department formulates strategic HR policy, bearing in mind the
overall organisational context (University of Sunderland 2004, p. 84).
If properly devised, HR policy formulation can make an essential contribution to
corporate success. However, it has to be considered that if the department devises a
wrong strategy it could slow down corporate development and thus future corporate
success.
Planning
This activity comprises HR planning, recruitment and workforce planning and work
organisation (University of Sunderland 2004, p. 84).
A problem area is that future development and corporate needs might be difficult to
estimate. This means that planning could be totally wrong and objectives could not
be achieved, which would also result in high costs.
Training and development
This comprises various tools such as induction, management

With the war going bad for the Continental Army, John Adams was sent to France
to try to convince them to give America naval help, for the U.S. s navy was very
weak. After attempting to gain naval support Adams sailed to Holland to get a
loan from the Dutch. He was successful in gaining the loan. Throughout the end of
the war, Adams would try to make peace with Britain. He was the main negotiator
in this action and would be successful in creating peace between the two countries.
After the US was favored to win the war, Adams was sent back to Paris to negotiate

Characteristics Of Animal Cells
our body is made of trillions of cells (Gottschling). Cells are important because it
helps understand how organisms, including humans function (Gottschling). Most
people have the knowledge that every cell that are in life have difference function.
Yet, they don t know what they are. This essay is going to focus on listing and
explaining the differences between animal, plant, and bacteriacells. Animal cells are
eukaryotic cells, or cells with a membrane bound nucleus (Bailey). This cellcontains
three cells out seven features. The features that animal cells contains are cell nucleus,
mitochondria and ribosomes. Cell nucleus controls cell activity and contains the
genetic material (Plant, Animal and Bacterial Cells). Mitochondria provide the
cells energy requirement (Plant, Animal and Bacterial Cells). Lastly, the ribosome
is present in plant and animal cells are the larger type of ribosomes but are the
smallest and most numerous of the eukaryotic cell organelles (Plant, Animal and
Bacterial Cells). Animal cells doesn t contain a cell wall, plasmids, chloroplasts
and permanent vacuole (Plant, Animal and Bacterial Cells). The size of this cells
range from 10 to 30 micrometers in length (Bailey). The Animal cells tends to come
in various sizes and tend to have round or irregular shapes (Bailey). Lastly, the way
that animal cell gets energy is by the form of the complex carbohydrate glycogen
(Bailey). Plant cells are eukaryotic cells, which have a true nucleus

Minnesota s Glaciers
The Wisconsin Glaciation of Minnesota
A glacier is a large body of ice that moves slowly across land and are formed by
there being a higher snow gain rather than a snow melt. Glaciers move by a small
amount of ice melting and the glacier sliding. Glaciers can help and destroy the
landscape in front of them but they can also shape the land into something
amazing. Glaciers were once present in Minnesota thousands of years ago and
played a massive role on the landscape we live on today, and as they melted they
left behind large amounts of water and formations. The glaciation is very confusing
to those who don t know about glaciers so here is some background information.

Outwash and till are similar but different at the same time and this is why they are
both deposited by glaciers, but the way they are deposited is what makes them
different. Till is simply the sediment left by the ice, outwash is deposited by the
running water coming off of the melting glacier. Because water can sort sediment,
and ice cannot, that is why the till is unsorted. Sorting just means when the rocks
are sorted by size, bigger pieces together on the bottom, smaller pieces together on
top. Glaciers are constructive and deconstructive they are deconstructive because
they tear up land and the glacier does not stop for anything but it is easy to avoid.
Glaciers erode the land and create landforms such as kames, eskers, and drumlins
those terms will be explained a little bit later. Glaciers create valleys by shearing
away the mountainside and moving it away. Some of the landforms that glaciers
produce are drumlins, terminal moraine, outwash plain, and an erratic. Drumlins
are elongated, teardrop shaped hills of rock, sand, and gravel that formed under
moving glacier ice. A terminal moraine is where the glacier reaches its max and
starts receding making a deposit of till. An outwash plain is a flat area made by
meltwater carrying outwash from the leading edge of the glacier. An erratic is a rock
or boulder carried from a place where the Rock is common to an area where the rock

English Essay on the Environment

October 15, 2011 It is common to see advertisements both locally and globally
stressing the importance of proper environmental management preservation and
conservation. Imprudent ecological governance has led to the extinction and
diminution of several species of wildlife and plants. Mankind s pursuit of
industrialization to make work easier, has resulted in the dangerous depletion of the
earth s natural resources. Fingers are pointed as the blame is cast on organizations
such as church and state. It appears as if humanity has refused to accept that proper
environmental management is everyone s duty. Even though mankind was given the

The demand for wood and land by Europeans, as well as the use of fossil fuel, have
destroyed the environment and have drastically depleted the natural resources that
the inhabitants depend on for food and shelter. This resulted in causing a greater
rift between the rich and the poor, and with this rift the poor become less capable
of attaining resources from the environment they need to survive. When less
resources are available, more poor go hungry, and starve. [5] This apathy for the
adverse effects of an action on another reveals insensitivity. Christians can make a
difference within their communities and workplaces by being more eco friendly.
Leading by example is a great way to subtly advocate policies that are
environmentally friendly, such as proper recycling and energy conservation. The
Christian s role is to stand up for what is right, speak against it, and boycott
activities that are contrary to biblical teachings. God s command to the children of
Israel was that every seven years the land should not be cultivated but allowed to
rest (Lev. 26: 34 35). With that knowledge, believers should come together and
seek to enforce similar laws that will allow ecological restoration. In the essay No
Margin for Error, New York Times reporter Bob Herbert, addressed the harmful
effects of global warming. He pointed out that it threatens creation as it destroys coral
reefs, raises temperature, and can possibly result in melting the

Grignard Reactions Lab
Grignard Reactions
Introduction
Grignard reactions are of extreme importance in synthesis of many organic
compounds. Because of the extreme nucleophilic tendencies of the Grignard reagent
(typically denoted RMgX, where R is an organic nucleophile, and X is a halide), we
find that Grignard reagents are extremely useful for the addition of organic fragments.
The Grignard reagent s extreme nucleophilicity can be explained by its unique
bonding abilities. Because the carbon magnesium bond is neither fully covalent nor
fully ionic, this creates a very stable yet reactive region at the pseudohalide.
Furthermore, the relatively similar electronegativities of the two adjacent atoms
create a strong pole between the two, while still stable enough to ... Show more

The Child Of Polish Immigrants
Born on April 29, 1938 in Queens New York Bernie Madoff was the child of Polish
immigrants. Madoff showed little interest in his early years for finance. He went
on to graduate from Hofstra University and married soon after. Madoff used a
modest $5,000 he had saved and $50,000 borrowed from his father0in law to begin
his investment firm in the 1960s. On December 11, 2008 it all came to an end.
Madoff would go on to plead guilty to 11 felony counts including but not limited to
securities fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and perjury. Prosecutors
would claim that over $170 billion was moved through Madoffs firm over the years,
just prior to his arrest 65 billion dollars was being shown on the financial statements.
Bernie Madoff ran what is by extreme measures the largest Ponzi scheme in world
history. His investment company was multinational and at its height handled more
than five percent of the total trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange.
Ponzi schemes are operations in which the operator pays investor returns from new
capital paid to the operator by new investors rather than from profit earned. Ponzi
schemes often begin as legitimate investment businesses until the legitimate
investment business fails. Much is still debated as to when Bernie Madoffs
operation become a Ponzi scheme. Bernie Madoffs operation was dependent on
feeder funds to bring in additional money to help the scheme along. Going back to
the earliest days of the Madoff fund two

Odysseus is deemed helpless in certain circumstances, which means it is up to the
heedless judgement of his men to keep them alive.
Using his prior knowledge, and what he gains from those he meets on his journey
back to Ithaca, Odysseus creates strategies to escape any obstacle that comes in his

Though Odysseus is the leader, and the one who holds the fate of his men, he is
rendered helpless in quite a few situations, which leaves his crew members to make
poor decisions. One of the stops on the journey back to Ithaca is the floating island of
Aeolus, where the crew meets the wind god himself. Odysseus and his crew arrive
next at the island of Aeolus, god of the winds, who helps them homeward by
bottling up unfavorable winds and sending them a fair breeze. After nine days sail,
with Ithica in sight, the men untie the bag of winds, and their ships are blown
straight back to Aeolus island, (ln 489 494). Odysseus constantly warns his men to
not touch the bag of winds at all, yet as he drifts asleep, the crew s curiosity gets

blowing the crew back to Aeolus s island. However, this time, Aeolus does not help

Paolaemonetes Vulgaris Case Study
Fort DeSoto Park is a protected marine environment that is next to Eckerd College, an
unprotected marine environment in Boca Ciega Bay. Palaemonetes vulgaris
(common name grass shrimp) is an invertebrate that is native to both areas. The
comparison that is to be made is the average total length of Palaemonetes vulgaris
between these two environments. The alternate hypothesis is because of human
interaction occurring in the waters of unprotected areas, the Palaemonetes vulgaris
will have a shorter average total length there. The null hypothesis is there is no
difference in the size of Palaemonetes vulgaris growing in the protected vs.
unprotected areas, because predators will eat all the shrimp in both areas causing
them to have the same... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The protected areas of Fort DeSoto will have larger specimens than the unprotected
areas of Eckerd College, because of the protection rights that Fort DeSoto has in
place. Where Eckerd College is not a protected environment the Palaemonetes
vulgaris are open to over fishing areas. The results could have different outcomes
based on a change in locations where the Palaemonetes vulgaris were sampled.
Based on the results, the null hypothesis is rejected because the Palaemonetes
vulgaris in Fort DeSoto are of greater average total length (mm) than in Boca Ciega
Bay at Eckerd College. Based on the results, the alternate hypothesis is accepted,
because of human interactions at Eckerd College, the Palaemonetes vulgaris have
shorter average total length (mm) than Fort DeSoto. By using Fort DeSoto s data
from 2012 (5 years ago from today, 2017) the results may have changed dramatically
in the size and quantity of the Palaemonetes vulgaris. Knowing the correct formulas
and not miss keying the information being entered in to the Excel spreadsheet will
affect the out coming results in the table. Knowing that the data from Fort DeSoto is
from 5 years ago, I would want to update that information first by recollecting the
data. The direction that future research could take would be to analysis the three
different kinds of shrimp found in the areas. Based on the data
Freud s Early Stages Of Gender Development Essay
Freud s early stages of gender development
Freud s psychosexual analysis of gender development emphasizes on impact of
sexuality in human behavior. He believed that an infant was born with immense
sexual desires and aggressive instinct. At each stage the sexual energies shift focus on
different erogenous zones. Also, according to him the child undergoes a constant
struggle between acting based on libidinal instincts and conforming to societal norms
and culture. In this struggle a child s libidinal energy is suppressed and directed onto
culturally accepted activities.
Stage I) Oral stage: This stage ranges from birth and to approximately 18 months. The
erogenous zone is the mouth. In this period child s seeks pleasure through sucking,
biting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mother is very close to the child.Gender Identity: The child can identify itself and
others as male or female but only based on physical characteristics (long hair, skirts
etc.)
18 months to 3 yearsAnal stage: Anus (Bowel control) is the erogenous zone.
Parents try to train the child to defecate according to societal norms.Gender
Stability: The child understands that gender is a stable thing. If someone is a boy
they will grow to be men and girl will grow up to be a woman.
3 to 6 yearsPhallic stage: Genitals is the erogenous zone. Boy starts discovering their
genitals and pleasure from stimulating it. Father is the powerful figure of influence.
Boys feel more powerful due the presence of penis and girls feels inferior due the
lack of it.Gender Constancy: The child understands that irrespective of the activities
a gender performs their sex will remain constant. Gender is an innate entity within
them and does not get affected when a boy plays with dolls or girl play with

Every student should have the right to pursue their interests and aspirations. The New

Edward Said States Essay examples
States Edward: Said
States, by Edward Said is an essay written by a Palestinian man with first hand
accounts of daily life in that region of the Middle East. Said was renowned in the
literary community as one of the most distinguished literary critics and scholars...
Born in Jerusalem in 1935, Said, at the age of twelve, fled with his family to Cairo
during the establishment of Israel as a Jewish state. In his essay, Said begins to
discuss the state of the Palestinian people. The content of his essay is an explanation
and an informative look on the Palestinian people, as well their situation and their
identity. In our English Composition class, we have been challenged to look past the
aesthetics of States and look not at just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They do not have luxuries, they do not take anything for granted. Said is
interesting in the decision of the placement of these two images. Looking further
into the second picture with a western perspective, the pathos is still evident, but it
is hidden in a sense. For example, if someone were wondering down the streets of
Manhattan with a camera, most people (with some exceptions, obviously) would
shy away from even asking for their picture being taken and, for the most part,
expect to have the picture afterward if there were any request. After seeing the
image, the reader feels sympathy whether they mean to or not. Whether or not the
happiness is a facade or plain ignorance, there is a subconscious level of sympathy
that readers find themselves experiencing. Ignorance is something I believe Said
plays off of well. Said knows that most people of the world are, in fact, ignorant of
what the Palestinians are experiencing. He sees ignorance as a representation of
helplessness, moreso than he sees it as a form of prejudice.
Another perfect example of the image of being pathetic that Said gives the people of
Palestine is the quote on page 587 used in our prompt. Said uses expressions and
strong figurative language such as metaphors to show just how broken of a people
the Palestinians are. The sentence on page 587, Instead, the past, like the present,
offers only occurrences and coincidences. is a strong way of
Effects Of The Cold War On Arab Paranoia
The Cold War Ended, Hot War Continues
The 20th century is very much defined by the cold war that continued from 1947 to
1991. For Eritreans however, that period was not cold, but a never ending cycle of
violence, bloodshed and social displacement. In 1991 the general mood was
optimistic as the end of the cold war introduced illusionary terms like globalization
and liberalization of economies but that turned out to be misnomers for intensive
monopolization of resources. In addition, it ushered wars fought in many countries
that were led into destitution by and bad governance by tyrants and warlords:
Afghanistan, Congo, Rwanda, Somalia and South Sudan. Ten years later, the circle of
fires expanded with the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. Soon, ... Show more content

Scottish Names Essay
The report highlights the following aspects of the subject:
1. Throughout the Middle Ages and Early Modern period each Gael had a single
given name plus a patronymic byname (in both Scotland and Ireland). There were
certain rules about what words could be used as given names and what could not.
The original meanings of the names were still recognized.
2. The Anglo Saxon settlers who came to South East Scotland around the 6th century
followed the Germanic naming conventions. Anglo Saxon given names were
composed of two lexemes. The number of lexemes were limited; the number of
combinations, however, must have been huge. It was almost impossible to find two
identical names.
3. There is a widespread opinion that Scottish families in the past followed a specific
naming pattern, when naming their children: first son was named after paternal
grandfather, first daughter after maternal grandmother, second son after maternal
grandfather, second daughter after paternal grandmother, etc. ... Show more content

The traditional pattern is believed to have been in effect in Scotland prior to 1900.
However, the collected from primary sources data allow us to claim that even in the
21st century Scotland, family naming traditions still occupy a very strong position.
5. In a synchronic sense, a significant percentage of Scottish names are of Gaelic
origin. There are also many Scottish variants to common English given names.
6. The comparison of the 100 most popular names in Scotland for the years 1900,
1950, 1975 and 2016 demonstrates steadily growing popularity of Scottish origin
names.
7. The report presents the findings of the online survey Naming practices and
traditions in Scotland , which main aim was to identify socio cultural factors that
influence naming practices in modern
Giorgio Armani
Giorgio Armani An entrepreneur is someone who organizes, operates, and
assumes the risk for a business venture. Giorgio Armani is a perfect example of a
modern entrepreneur, who became very successful in the fashion industry. Armani
is estimated to be worth around 2 Billion (US) dollars. Giorgio Armani was born
on July 11, 1932 in Piacenza in the Emilia region of Italy. He also spent most of his
childhood in Piacenza but he did not have a very happy childhood, Piacenza took
heavy bombing during the time of a war, which Giorgio was very small and lost
two of his best friends when a bomb exploded. He and his sister Rosanna Armani
who was three years old at the time were nearly gunned down. Armani Parents would

Quality of life is your personal satisfaction and the more money you have you are
probably going to live a better quality of life and since Armani has over 2 Billion
dollars he has an awesome quality of life. He goes to the most prestigious resorts
for his vacations and has a private jet to take him there. He also has 6 houses in
Italy his houses are located in Broni, Forte de Marmi and Pantelleria and in Tropez.
I think that Giorgio Armani deserves to be where he is today because he worked
very hard for it and he has the perfect idea of what fashion should be. I also think
that he is very smart and also very creative. He can turn the lamest trends into
fashion hits and he knows how to make money! After studying Armani I would
consider entering the fashion industry and work very hard to become a huge
success, it would be cool to have your name on clothes for the world to see and the
money is not too bad either and it would be great to work with all the female models!
I hope that Giorgio Armani has a great future and designs many more sophisticated
and unstructured clothes, and maybe I will be his main competitor in the

SHC 32: Engage in personal development in health, social care or children s and

1.1 Describe the duties and responsibilities of own work role 1.2 Explain
expectations about own work role as expressed in relevant standards.
As a qualified level 3 practitioner I am responsible to fulfil my duties and work role
to the best of my ability. In other words I always like to try to give my position my
full attention and give it 100% of my time and dedication. I believe that this helps me

Another crucial criteria of my role is to promote good behaviour and to help with
this all members of staff in our classroom implements the golden rules which have
to be followed at all times. We promote this by again asking children to add marbles
to the jar, using praising vocabulary or by sticker charts for those children who are
struggling to follow the rules. I regularly listen to the children read and keep
records of their achievements which are reported back to the class teacher. I am
very fortunate that I get along quite well with the other team members in my
classroom and this helps with lots of different aspects of my responsibilities and
duties as I could find it extremely difficult to communicate with a member of staff if
there was an atmosphere and so discussing the children s issues or next steps may
be awkward if it happens at all. Working well in a team is an essential part of
becoming a level 3 practitioner no matter what the situation is as we constantly
have to have involvement with team members as well as parents and other
professionals to be able to provide the children in our care a fair and equal
opportunity to education. In order to abide by not only my settings policies and
procedures but the laws, regulations and guidelines set by local authorities and central
government it is also essential to remember essential aspects of

The difficulty lies in capturing the reader's attention right from the beginning, setting the tone for the entire essay, and establishing a strong foundation for the arguments or ideas that will follow. The writer must navigate the fine line between being intriguing and informative, avoiding clichГ©s while maintaining coherence and relevance. It's akin to orchestrating a symphony where the initial notes set the mood for the entire composition. • 2. Realism In International Relations Realism is not a new concept. Classical Realism has its roots firmly placed in ancient Greece at the time of Thucydides where in the History of the Poloponneasean War he wrote The strong do what they have the power to do, the weak accept what they have to accept (Thucydides 1972: 402). Thucydides is thought to explain the role of power within politics at this early stage (Donelly, 2000) through to the time of Machiavelli in the 16th Century. Stanley Hoffman is quoted as saying that the theory is ...probably the most distinguished school of thought in the history of international relations (Hoffman, 1988 p.6). Whilst Realism, as a concept, has helped to define International Relations by fostering the notion that power is the only political gain to be wanted, Robert Gilpin sees it as a ... philosophical disposition and set of assumptions about the world rather than as in any strict sense a scientific theory (Gilpin, 1984 p. 290). Realists are unified in believing that Power and survival is fundamentally the most desired thing between the universal actors: The States. The theory is built on a basis of pessimism and that that politics is a tussle for both power and survival and labels politics on an international scale as a series of recurrent conflicts among states with very little prospect for change (Jackson and Sorensen, 2007). Whilst there are similarities which bind the different veins of realism together, this essay will look at those different veins within the

It is the history of Message and the ways of transmitting it from the beginnings until now days, from smoke signals and wall drawings until the modern technologies that Media uses now days. I found it full of information presented in the funniest way. Trying to see the American spirit, the author talked about different cities and what ideas they represent. • 4. Lincoln and His Generals by T. Harry Williams Essay Lincoln and His Generals by T. Harry Williams Harry T. Williams was born on May 19, 1909. When in college, he was encouraged by a professor to study history. This professor s main interest was the Civil War era and had a great effect on Williams. He attended Platteville State Teachers College (later Wisconsin State University at Platteville) where he received a B.Ed in 1931. Williams continued education into graduate school was mainly due to the lack of work during the Great Depression. He went on to earn a Ph.M. in 1932, and Ph.D. in 1937, from the University of Wisconsin (Dawson 431). Lincoln and His Generals was the breakthrough book for Williams who had only written one book previously. This book provided him with many national ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Lincoln interacted with Scott, he showed a deference for Scott s age and knowledge. Thus allowing Scott to share his skills, this humility was shored by General McClellan. Lincoln later changes his approach towards McClellan, trying to boost his confidence and courage. Williams continually shows McClellan as an egotist, who eventually replaced Scott as General in chief. McClellan is depicted as unsure, indecisive, self centered and fearful of declaring war. Lincoln continually defends McClellan but is not afraid of tactfully sending criticism his way. One could easily be lead to believe that Lincoln was more of a placator. Williams shows us that Lincoln never hesitated in making difficult decisions based on results. Lincoln s people skills are easily ascertained in Williams writings. Lincoln seems keen at applying pressure as well as giving his generals a free hand when necessary. Williams shows an interesting side of Lincoln s patience that wears thin when there are no early victories and from the lack of aggressiveness on the Union side. Williams shows a gradual transformation on Lincoln s selection process. Initially each general was selected on characteristics such as battle experience and political backing. As the enemy holds out and there is inaction, Lincoln starts to doubt the ability of his generals and starts to seek generals who can win without excuses. Williams captures the pressures that are placed

The Farming Of Bones Poverty Quotes The Pain of Massacre and Poverty In her novel, The Farming of Bones, Edwidge Danticat creates scenes of personal trauma in Tibon s description of his capture and Amabelle s beating. Danticat does an excellent job of humanizing the horrors of a general massacre through the development of specific characters. The painful memories that Danticat composes are extremely similar to Frank McCourt s remembrances in his memoir, Angela Ashes, where he retells his childhood in extreme poverty. Danticat writes two absolutely horrific scenes that Amabelle encounters during her travels into Haiti. Amabelle and Sebastien, her future husband, lose contact when they are separated by the Parsley Massacre. Amabelle is most troubled by the idea that she does... The twins are hungry [...] I boil sour milk in a pot, mash in some of the stale bread, and try to feed them from a cup. They make faces and run to Mam s bed, crying (McCourt). As a result of the father spending the family s money on beer, the family suffers from malnourishment leaving the children to find their own food. Even after the death of his own daughter, Malachy is nowhere to be found, providing no signs of regret or of encouragement to his wife and family. The most striking part of this image to me is that the twins are drinking water and sugar rather than milk in their bottles. Because milk is so commonplace, I had never envisioned it would be too expensive for an American child to afford. These two novels evoke extreme emotions of hardship and adversity that cause the reader to recognize the ills in society that they may not have fully

  • 7. An Argument for Design Adam Hubert PHI 150 Dr. Peterson Intelligent Design October 27, 2013 Take a moment to think about the world around you and all of its beauty. From the ever flowing Mississippi River, to the ledges of the mighty Grand Canyon, or even to the peak of Mt. Fuji there is an immense amount of things on this Earth that are so incredible it is hard to believe science and chance created these magnificent things. So what is the best explanation for these occurrences? I believe that these occurrences scream of an intelligent designer which also leads us to the existence of God. First I must explain what an argument for design is and then we will look at Paley s Watchmaker Theory to give us better insight on this argument. Then I will point ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stafford Betty and Bruce Cordell states that because it is so unlikely that our universe was randomly generated, there must have been an intelligent designer. Betty and Cordell point to the calculations of many renowned scientist to show that our unique universe could not have existed if the slightest detail were any different than the way it is now. They state, At this point we must ask ourselves what is easier to imagine and thus to believe; that the cosmos entire history should have arisen from this self creating and self explaining surd; or that a pre existing mind and power of vast magnitude should have created the ingredients of the universe and triggered it at the Big Bang? The second alternative seems a little bit more likely... (Betty and Cordell 223). This argument goes off of inference of the best explanation in the sense that logically it makes more sense and easier to believe that an intelligent designer created the universe rather than a random explosion of matter that started to expand and our universe was formed. This point also creates an objection though, where did God come from and how did he create everything ex nihilo, or out of nothing. The theist should properly respond to this objection by pointing to the definition of God, a wholly good and omnipotent being. So by our human perspective God or the intelligent designer should not be able to create himself, but remember by omnipotent he can do all, for he is all powerful so there is

They wondered how the seasons changed and what were planets and stars. All of these things were mysteries to them, and the Greeks answered these questions through the myths of Gods and Goddesses. Ancient Greeks believed that these Gods and Goddesses controlled the elements of nature and helped their lives for the better through everyday activities. One day, when she was playing in the meadow, the Earth opened up and Hades appeared to take Persephone. Accomplishing his task, Demeter searched the Earth for her daughter until Hermes told her everything. It seemed that Zeus and Hermes watched the abduction. After eating some pomegranate seeds, Persephone was to stay in the Underworld one third of the year and return to her mother for four months. What everyone didn t know is that Zeus may have helped plan it. Zeus one of the big three, is the god of weather and siblings of Hades and Poseidon. Overthrowing his father, Cronus, Zeus became ruler of Olympus as well as lord of the sky. His weapon was a thunderbolt that he would hurl at whoever defied him. Using his shield, Zeus could create anything of nature that related to the sky. He was married to Hera, but was known for his infamous affairs with other goddesses. One of his many affairs brought one of the most complex and important gods: Apollo. Apollo was the god of many things including: music, art, poetry, oracles, archery, plague, medicine, sun, light and knowledge. He was born out of an affair with the Titan Goddess, Leto. Apollo was also known as kuoros, which means he is beardless, athletic, and youthful. However, he is also known for many deaths with his plagues in wars. Ironically, he also represents purity, he is able to cleanse all the blood stained on bodies. All in all, Apollo was very powerful, and represented many things in
  • 9. Analysis Of The Book Hear The Wind Blow Imagine becoming an orphan at the age of thirteen, having to take care of your seven year old sister with an older brother fighting in the war. Haswell Magruder experiences these hardships, along with starvation, arrest, and figuring out how he will make due without a parental figure around. The novel Hear the Wind Blow, is an interesting story that vividly describes every event to the reader, accurately informs them of the troubles many people endured during the Civil War, and constantly keeps them on the edge of their seats. The author, Mary Downing Hahnprovides a peek into the world not only through words but through an actual map of Virginia, where the events take place. While the map was very helpful, the words in the book still express dramatic feelings, actions, and words of the characters in this fast paced compelling read. Especially in the gory parts of the story were these emotions and descriptions truly vivid in my mind. For example, after the Union armystormed into the Magruder s house, Haswell s mother was taken upstairs by Captain Powell. When Haswell and his sister, Rachel heard a gunshot and saw their mother stroll out of the room covered in blood, they knew she killed him. Haswell eventually had to go upstairs to investigate the scene and hide the body from the Captain s men. While he did this, he described that the Captain s blood soaked the sheets and quilts and pillows with crimson. His one remaining eye glared at me in fury. (Hahn 44) Haswell,
  • 10. Gender Roles And Stereotypes Have On Women This paper focuses on gender roles in advertisements and further analyzes the affect these advertisements have on women. Gender roles refer to the ways in which individuals are expected to act based on their gender. These roles are very prevalent in society, and because of this, are also depicted heavily in advertisements. Although men do receive negative messages from advertisements, this paper focuses more on women because of the amount of violence and stereotypes that are depicted towards them in these ads. What is the history of this topic? Gender roles and stereotypes are forced upon individuals the moment they are brought into the world. If an individual is born with female genitalia, they are automatically labeled as girl and if they have male ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are then told how to act and look based on these labels, and it is very hard to escape these expectations. Girls are expected to become mothers and housewives and be confident but also submissive. Boys are expected to pursue high paying careers and marry a beautiful woman and be tough. This has been the case since the beginning of time, with gender roles changing throughout time and throughout cultures. The primary agents of socialization are parents, peers, social institutions, and the media (Kimmel 2017). Media is a very important agent to study because everyone is exposed to some form of media each day, and media is an easy and accessible way for people to learn things about the world. It has been said that the advertisement industry has been incorporating gender roles into their campaigns for approximately 40 years (Browall Nd). Past research has found that in advertisements, women are given the following attributes: passivity, lack of intelligence and credibility, deference, shyness and helplessness (Browne 1998). This research has also found that in advertisements, men appear to be constructive, powerful, controlling, achieving and autonomous (Browne 1998).
  • 11. Berkeley Admissions Essay The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on November 7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip flop between Gore and Bush, but because I had an IV in my arm which made it impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that evening, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in America. This was an especially crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans the June before, and I had my Bar Mitzvah in September. I found the latter to be the most satisfying, as many kids, especially the older ones, were curious about the effects, but hesitant to ask an adult about the repercussions. The most challenging thing to me was the number of parents who seemed to simply give up. I saw a large amount of inaction; which in the case of diabetes is simply unacceptable. I enjoyed educating and motivating these kids to make beneficial lifestyle changes, so that good health rather than disease can help to define their futures, as well as my own. While I started my volunteer educational program, another man was well ensconced in his own. Al Gore took up a cause that many people seemed to be ignoring, our environment. The issues of climate change and general environmentalism are very important to me. I see similarities between the challenges of managing a clean environment for our globe and the challenges of managing good health to me. Through concerted efforts to make routine changes we have the capacity to live more ecologically friendly, and often healthier lives. I have seen that with just a few adjustments, I can control my diabetes to the point where most people do not even know I have it. Likewise, I believe that if we commit to making fundamental changes in the way we go about our lives, we can easily remedy several environmental issues we face today. By going to Berkeley Law School and focusing on Environmental Law, I can apply my own life s lessons

A newborn will sleep for a total of around 15 to 17 hours a day, and by the age of one will triple in weight (Berger, 2016, p.91). This is due to the fact that during sleep a substantial amount of growth takes place, and is therefore why infants spent so much of their early days sleeping, although sporadic. While growth is occurring in nearly every aspect of an infant the development the strengthening of muscles leads to the progression of motor skills. Motor skills are a learned ability that allows regulated movements of a body part (Berger, 2016, p.100). The movements of large muscle groups are the first to develop and is referred to as the development of gross motor skills (Berger, 2016, p.101). Development usually progresses from the head down and radiating from the center out to the periphery (Berger, 2016, p. 101). In some cases reflexes help to develop and strengthen these muscle groups. For example, when an infant is placed on their stomach they will attempt to lift their head, and flail with their arms in order maintain vision and in turn practice mobility (Berger, 2016, p.101). The lifting of the head processes to the strengthening of the arms and legs and the ability to crawl and eventually the ability to walk around the age of one (Berger, 2016,

It is important for your people to trust that you have their interests and goals at heart while also laying out clear expectations early on in your command and trusting, yet verifying all parties are meeting expectations. Throughout my life and previous experiences I have witnessed firsthand how cohesive units are when these values are incorporated into leadership philosophies and have also seen how detrimental it is to the unit if they are not incorporated. An additional layer to integrity is that I would never ask of others what I would or could not do myself. In order to wear corsets girls were able to have several different body types and still be able to achieve the hourglass figure that was ideal in the time. McKie says, in the article Chimps With Everything: Jane Goodall s 50 Years in the Jungle that was mentioned earlier, that Goodall discovered that apes are able to actually create and use tools. She continues that Goodall observed that a male ape carefully took a twig, bent it, stripped it of its leaves, and finally stuck it into the nest. Then he began to spoon termites into his mouth. This new information was shocking to the world. Goodall says that in school she learned that man was the only living thing that could make tools; that was what defined man. This new discovery has forced the scientific community to redefine what is man (McKie).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clay and de Waal found that apes that were raised by their mothers had a better ability to control their emotions. Young bonobos that were orphaned at a young age were less likely to show empathy toward others who are in distress, are less likely to recover quickly from anger, and scored lower in social competency tests. These results are consistent with the ability to regulate emotions in human children. Some apes are able to communicate intelligently with humans effectively. This is shown in a video clip from 60 Minutes where Ross Coulthart interviews Penny Patterson, caretaker of an ape known as Koko. Patterson attained her PhD in psychology from Stanford University in 1972 and has worked with Koko ever since. She says that she has taught Koko how to sign one thousand words and that Koko is able to understand an additional two thousand. Coulthart mentions in the video clip that Koko has also created her own signs. For example, she did not know how to sign the word ring, so she signed finger bracelet instead; she also called a mask an eye hat. When she didn t know how to sign a word, she created her own sign to be able get her point across. This shows that apes are not simply doing what their caretakers are telling them to do to receive treats, but instead are actually communicating and can comprehend what they are signing. Coulthart also explains why there are still many people in the scientific community

Because water can sort sediment, and ice cannot, that is why the till is unsorted. Sorting just means when the rocks are sorted by size, bigger pieces together on the bottom, smaller pieces together on top. Glaciers are constructive and deconstructive they are deconstructive because they tear up land and the glacier does not stop for anything but it is easy to avoid. Because of the extreme nucleophilic tendencies of the Grignard reagent (typically denoted RMgX, where R is an organic nucleophile, and X is a halide), we find that Grignard reagents are extremely useful for the addition of organic fragments. The Grignard reagent s extreme nucleophilicity can be explained by its unique bonding abilities. Because the carbon magnesium bond is neither fully covalent nor fully ionic, this creates a very stable yet reactive region at the pseudohalide. Furthermore, the relatively similar electronegativities of the two adjacent atoms create a strong pole between the two, while still stable enough to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This reagent was prepared from phenylmagnesium bromide and carbon dioxide in anhydrous THF. this is shown in Scheme 2 below. (2) Scheme 2: Synthesis of and Isolation of Benzoic Acid The above reaction was carried out and was unsuccessful, yielding almost no amount of product. The desired appearance of the product was a white crystalline compound. Since barely any product was isolated benzoic acid in the lab was substituted for the next reaction. The third reaction was prepared by synthesis of the reagent, benzoate. This reagent was prepared from phenylmagnesium bromide with benzoic acid in anhydrous THF. this reaction produced benzoic acid, benzene and water. This is shown in Scheme 3 below. (3) Scheme 3: Reaction of Benzoic Acid with PhMgBr The above reaction was carried out and was successful for most students, yielding a significant amount of product. One of two possible products was made, the other being triphenyl methanol. The melting point of this product is, showing that we did in fact make the expected product.

He went on to graduate from Hofstra University and married soon after. Madoff used a modest $5,000 he had saved and $50,000 borrowed from his father0in law to begin his investment firm in the 1960s. On December 11, 2008 it all came to an end. Madoff would go on to plead guilty to 11 felony counts including but not limited to securities fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and perjury. Prosecutors would claim that over $170 billion was moved through Madoffs firm over the years, just prior to his arrest 65 billion dollars was being shown on the financial statements. Bernie Madoff ran what is by extreme measures the largest Ponzi scheme in world history. His investment company was multinational and at its height handled more than five percent of the total trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange. Ponzi schemes are operations in which the operator pays investor returns from new capital paid to the operator by new investors rather than from profit earned. Ponzi schemes often begin as legitimate investment businesses until the legitimate investment business fails. Much is still debated as to when Bernie Madoffs operation become a Ponzi scheme. Bernie Madoffs operation was dependent on feeder funds to bring in additional money to help the scheme along. Going back to the earliest days of the Madoff fund two
  • 39. The Downfall Of Odysseus Crew In The Odyssey By Homer The downfall of Odysseus s crew in The Odyssey, an epic written by the Greek poet Homer, does not affect Odysseus s image as a leader, given that his clever strategies rescue his crew members from treacherous situations, while, on the other hand, Odysseus is deemed helpless in certain circumstances, which means it is up to the heedless judgement of his men to keep them alive. Using his prior knowledge, and what he gains from those he meets on his journey back to Ithaca, Odysseus creates strategies to escape any obstacle that comes in his or his crew s way. As Odysseus s ship sails towards the Sirens, he prepares his men for what perilous events may happen. He tells them, Sirens weaving a haunting song over the sea we are to shun, she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though Odysseus is the leader, and the one who holds the fate of his men, he is rendered helpless in quite a few situations, which leaves his crew members to make poor decisions. One of the stops on the journey back to Ithaca is the floating island of Aeolus, where the crew meets the wind god himself. Odysseus and his crew arrive next at the island of Aeolus, god of the winds, who helps them homeward by bottling up unfavorable winds and sending them a fair breeze. After nine days sail, with Ithica in sight, the men untie the bag of winds, and their ships are blown straight back to Aeolus island, (ln 489 494). Odysseus constantly warns his men to not touch the bag of winds at all, yet as he drifts asleep, the crew s curiosity gets the better of them, and they open the bag. The bad winds come rushing out, blowing the crew back to Aeolus s island. However, this time, Aeolus does not help them. At one of the later stops, Odysseus and his men stop at Helios s island because of a torrential storm sent by the gods. The voyagers become trapped there for a month, which is how long the storm lasts, with no food to survive on. There are cattle present on this island, but they are not to be eaten, as they belong to the sun god Helios. Odysseus prays to the gods for help, but they put him to sleep. The other men want the starvation to end, so they kill the cattle and eat them. Now, that day tranquil cattle with broad

That reading assignment was to read to books called The Life of Pi and How to read Literature like a Professor . The story that best describes the letters that we are reading in class is The Life of Pi . The reason why I say this is because in the story there is survival, friendship, and boat sailing. To begin with The life of Piis a story on how a boy survived a sunken ship which was caused by a massive storm. After the storm he is placed on a raft with 4 different animals that includes zebra, tiger, orangutan, and hyena. Palaemonetes vulgaris (common name grass shrimp) is an invertebrate that is native to both areas. The comparison that is to be made is the average total length of Palaemonetes vulgaris between these two environments. The alternate hypothesis is because of human interaction occurring in the waters of unprotected areas, the Palaemonetes vulgaris will have a shorter average total length there. The null hypothesis is there is no difference in the size of Palaemonetes vulgaris growing in the protected vs. unprotected areas, because predators will eat all the shrimp in both areas causing them to have the same... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The protected areas of Fort DeSoto will have larger specimens than the unprotected areas of Eckerd College, because of the protection rights that Fort DeSoto has in place. Where Eckerd College is not a protected environment the Palaemonetes vulgaris are open to over fishing areas. The results could have different outcomes based on a change in locations where the Palaemonetes vulgaris were sampled. Based on the results, the null hypothesis is rejected because the Palaemonetes vulgaris in Fort DeSoto are of greater average total length (mm) than in Boca Ciega Bay at Eckerd College. Based on the results, the alternate hypothesis is accepted, because of human interactions at Eckerd College, the Palaemonetes vulgaris have shorter average total length (mm) than Fort DeSoto. By using Fort DeSoto s data from 2012 (5 years ago from today, 2017) the results may have changed dramatically in the size and quantity of the Palaemonetes vulgaris. Knowing the correct formulas and not miss keying the information being entered in to the Excel spreadsheet will affect the out coming results in the table. Knowing that the data from Fort DeSoto is from 5 years ago, I would want to update that information first by recollecting the data. The direction that future research could take would be to analysis the three different kinds of shrimp found in the areas. Based on the data

They do not have luxuries, they do not take anything for granted. Said is interesting in the decision of the placement of these two images. Looking further into the second picture with a western perspective, the pathos is still evident, but it is hidden in a sense. For example, if someone were wondering down the streets of Manhattan with a camera, most people (with some exceptions, obviously) would shy away from even asking for their picture being taken and, for the most part, expect to have the picture afterward if there were any request. After seeing the image, the reader feels sympathy whether they mean to or not. Whether or not the happiness is a facade or plain ignorance, there is a subconscious level of sympathy that readers find themselves experiencing. Ignorance is something I believe Said plays off of well. Said knows that most people of the world are, in fact, ignorant of what the Palestinians are experiencing. He sees ignorance as a representation of helplessness, moreso than he sees it as a form of prejudice. Another perfect example of the image of being pathetic that Said gives the people of Palestine is the quote on page 587 used in our prompt. Said uses expressions and strong figurative language such as metaphors to show just how broken of a people the Palestinians are. The sentence on page 587, Instead, the past, like the present, offers only occurrences and coincidences. is a strong way of

  • 47. Scottish Names Essay The report highlights the following aspects of the subject: 1. Throughout the Middle Ages and Early Modern period each Gael had a single given name plus a patronymic byname (in both Scotland and Ireland). There were certain rules about what words could be used as given names and what could not. The original meanings of the names were still recognized. 2. The Anglo Saxon settlers who came to South East Scotland around the 6th century followed the Germanic naming conventions. Anglo Saxon given names were composed of two lexemes. The number of lexemes were limited; the number of combinations, however, must have been huge. It was almost impossible to find two identical names. 3. There is a widespread opinion that Scottish families in the past followed a specific naming pattern, when naming their children: first son was named after paternal grandfather, first daughter after maternal grandmother, second son after maternal grandfather, second daughter after paternal grandmother, etc. ...
