CLIMATE ACTION IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Climate change describes a variety in the average conditions in a region over a long period of
time, including warming temperatures and precipitation changes, as well as the effects it
produces such us: the rise of sea levels, the shrink of mountain glaciers, the ice melting faster
than ever and the change in flower and plant blooming times. Even though the Earth’s climate
has been constantly changing, scientists have observed unusual changes recently, caused by
the human activity. Like the quickly increase of the Earth’s average temperature, during the
lasts years.
This fact is affecting every country in the world; this last decade was the warmest ever
recorded and 2019 was the second warmest year on record. Not only do it cause lot of climate
disasters such us hurricanes, heat waves, wildfires, droughts or floods in short term, but also,
in long term it is disrupting national economies and affecting the most vulnerable lives and
livelihoods.
Climate change is produced by the greenhouse effect gases in Earth’s atmosphere that block
the air from escaping, leading to a warmer Earth.
These effects had raised the awareness of Sustainable development and, to take urgent action
to combat climate change and its impact, it’s one of them goals.
The United States of America is the number one emitter of greenhouse effect gases and it has
been really affected by this phenomenon, in the fact that a big part of the glaciers had
disappeared, temperatures are rising, snow and rainfall patterns are shifting, and extreme
climate events are becoming more common.
Through the Americans there are a lot of different opinions concerning global warming, only
the half believes it is caused by humans, and one third believes that this a “fake new”. This
may well be due to the fact that the media doesn’t give it the importance they should.
2012 was the warmest year of the United States. It is true that in 2013 and 2014 the global
warming was lower, but in 2015 it raised again.
That’s why, in 2016 they adopted the Paris Agreement, that was formed the 12 December of
2015, thank to its president Obama, and things started to improve. The Paris Agreement goal
was to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and to limit the global temperature
increase. The countries that joint it should reduce their emissions, try to adapt to climate change
impacts and to help the developing nations.
This agreement is a key fact for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals as it
includes some actions that will reduce emissions and build climate resilience.
But America, in 2017 withdraw from it, because his president, Donald Trump wasn’t in favour of
incrementing the burden imposed on American workers, businesses and taxpayers by U.S.
promises made under the agreement. During his presidency, there hadn’t been any type of policy
and several damages had been caused, including the increment of the carbon dioxide emissions
and greenhouse effect gasses. For him, economic growth was more important than emissions
targets, he believes that climate and other environmental regulations were harming job
creation. Not only does this decision affect the U.S., but other countries had been inspired by
Trump to adapt the same policies also.
The fact that COVID-19 appeared had not be very favourable for this problem neither. It has made
a 6 percentage drop in greenhouse gas emissions. It is true that, in some ways, it had improve
some things, for example carbon emissions have fallen due to de reduction of transport and
industry, but, now a days we are polluting more because we tend to left masks wherever we want
and most of us aren’t recycling them. The UN had proposed six-positive climate actions that are
going to help a lot, so if Biden adopts those recommendations, which it seems he will do it, things
will improve a lot.
Americans needed a change, because with the help of Trump’s policy and COVID-19 American
global emissions of 2020 are much bigger than ever, so even though it will be challenging some
things need to be taken into account by the largest economy in the world.
If not, by 2035 an additional of 1.8 million greenhouse effect gases will be in the atmosphere.
Providing that Biden re-implements those policies the emissions, or even make them be
straighten, will be lower, but it will still have a lasting effect due to the forth years and another
two ones, that are needed to reinstall them, that the U.S. had been without the policies.
There are lots of climate change conferences on different parts of the world, but if we want to
overpass this goal we all need to pull our weight and follow all the advices they are giving to
save the planet.
