Proteins are made up of chains of amino acids that fold into complex 3D shapes defined by their sequence. There are 20 types of amino acids that can be combined to form the primary structure of a protein. The sequence determines the unique secondary, tertiary, and sometimes quaternary structures which define a protein's specific function. Proteins perform most of the work in cells and have roles in structure, function, regulation and catalysis. The seven main types of proteins include enzymes, structural proteins, transport proteins and more, each with distinct functions in the body.

The document discusses REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation), a UN-led effort to create financial value for the carbon stored in forests. It aims to provide incentives for developing countries to reduce forest-related emissions and invest in low-carbon development. The UN-REDD Programme supports countries in preparing national REDD+ strategies, measuring and monitoring forest carbon stocks, and moving from readiness phases to implementation of their strategies through payments for emission reductions. REDD+ goes beyond deforestation to include conservation, sustainable forest management, and carbon stock enhancement.
The document discusses the creation of a Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Fund, which will harness private sector investment to support global efforts towards land rehabilitation and sustainable land management. The fund will provide financing to initiatives that restore degraded land and promote practices to avoid further degradation. It aims to rehabilitate 12 million hectares of land annually to help achieve the UN goal of land degradation neutrality by 2030. The fund is presented as a public-private partnership that will generate environmental, social and financial returns through projects supporting agriculture, forestry, conservation and other sectors. An example project in Peru demonstrates how the fund could support large-scale land rehabilitation through agroforestry and reforestation initiatives.

Following from the 1992 Earth Summit, where desertification was recognised as one of the biggest environmental challenges hindering sustainable development, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification UNCCD was established in 1994. UNCCD, now with 197 Parties, is a legally binding international agreement that aims to bring together environmental and developmental issues with sustainable land management solutions. Marking the day of its adoption, 17th June each year is Desertification and Drought Day.Desertification refers to the land degradation in drylands. These arid, semi arid and sub humid areas make up 40 of global land area and support the livelihoods of two billion people worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Drylands are present in every continent and are mostly prevalent across Africa and Asia. The degradation of drylands is caused by climatic variations and other human activities such as deforestation and unsustainable land use amongst other factors. This has severe implications, for example resulting in the loss of 24 billion tons of fertile soil per year, putting peoplesâ livelihoods and lives at risk. This document discusses the threats that urban sprawl and landscape fragmentation pose to biodiversity. As more land is used for settlements and transport infrastructure, habitat for wildlife is lost and remaining open spaces become isolated fragments. Linear developments like roads divide the landscape, creating barriers that many species cannot cross. This leads to declining and locally extinct populations as habitats are destroyed and species lose genetic diversity. Efforts are needed to curb urban sprawl and mitigate the isolating effects of infrastructure on wildlife habitats and populations.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.
Strategies for Effective Upskilling is a presentation by Chinwendu Peace in a Your Skill Boost Masterclass organisation by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan on 08th and 09th June 2024 from 1 PM to 3 PM on each day.
This presentation was provided by Steph Pollock of The American Psychological Associationâs Journals Program, and Damita Snow, of The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), for the initial session of NISO's 2024 Training Series "DEIA in the Scholarly Landscape." Session One: 'Setting Expectations: a DEIA Primer,' was held June 6, 2024.
2. STORY OF UNITED NATIONSâ SDGs
On 25th September 2015, the world leaders adopted what is known as the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development. This is a series of seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs for
short). These objectives are an urgent call for action by all the countries, both developed and
developing.
3. GOAL NUMBER 15: LIFE ON LAND
This goal focuses mainly in the protection, restoration and promotion of a sustainable use of the terrestrial
ecosystems, managing forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation and halting the
biodiversity loss.
The focus of this project is to see how some English speaking countries deal with the sustainable development
goals that the United Nations created. In this case, we will review the development that the United Kingdom has
experienced towards this goal.
4. UNITED KINGDOMâS DEVELOPMENT
At 31 March 2020, the UK stated that the estimated woodland area as a percentage of total land area
in the country reached it highest point in the last 17 years, being this a 13,2% of all United Kingdom,
divided into 10% of Englandâs total land area, 15% of Walesâ total land, 19% in Scotland and 9% in
Northern Ireland.
Also, 43% of this woodland area is certified as sustainably managed by the UK, experimenting an
1,6% increase of the woodland area as a percentage of total land area since 2015.
5. UNITED KINGDOMâS DEVELOPMENT
On everything related to the progress towards sustainable forest management,
we can observe in the image that the number of forest
hectares in the United Kingdom has increased in
40000 since the year 2015.
6. UNITED KINGDOMâS DEVELOPMENT
Another important development target is the urgent and significant action to reduce the extinction of
threatened species, which appear on the âRed list indexâ.
As we see in the chart, the amount of the Red List Index has
decreased since 2000. From 2015 to 2020 the Red List Index
decreased from 0,798 to 0,777.
7. UNITED KINGDOMâS DEVELOPMENT
On the prevention or control of invasive alien species, the United Kingdom published in August 2015
the Great Britain Invasive Non-Native Species Strategy. This strategy covers every non-native species
of flora and fauna, excluding genetically modified living beings.
The invasive non-native species are managed in the British Isles, with countries working closely
together in order to co-ordinate their efforts. The priority species are identified following scientific
reviews, expert inputs and a framework to make sure that their management have been developed.
Although the strong actions the government made, the number of these species in Britain has
remained constant in terrestrial environments.
8. UNITED KINGDOMâS DEVELOPMENT
The United Kingdom published its sixth national report in March 2019. This report showed the United
Kingdom is on track to achieve the 25% of the Aichi Targets by their deadlines. Progress is being made
towards achieving the 70% of the targets. There is 1 target that was not assessed.
This indicator is related to the progress on achieving Aichi Target 2. The United Kingdom incorporated
biodiversity values into a range of planning, accounting and reporting systems. The countries that
form the United Kingdom also established diverse country-based initiatives in order to support the
achievement of this target. For instance, in England, the National Planning Policy Framework was
modified in order to strengthen the protection for irreplaceable habitats and to make clear that
developments should provide biodiversity net gain.
9. UNITED KINGDOMâS DEVELOPMENT
For the next decade, the United Kingdom also have some projects on mind, such as reducing the
proportion of land that is degraded over total land area and the coverage by protected areas of
important sites for mountain diversity. On this case, the United Kingdom has maintained the number
of 87,6% since the year 2010.
10. Moving on, another target that has 2030 as deadline is related to the mountain green cover index,
which measures the percentage of mountainous areas covered by some form of green vegetation. In
2017, the United Kingdom had a 75,86% of the mountainous areas covered by green vegetation.
UNITED KINGDOMâS DEVELOPMENT
11. As we have seen on the presentation, the United Kingdom has done an incredible progress on the
points for SDG number fifteen. This measures are great for trying to maintain ecosystems that are
sometimes forgotten because of all the efforts destined to the oceans. On my humble opinion, both
the land and the ocean should deserve the same helps in order to have a better environment and a
better tomorrow for the next generations.
