WCET 2017 Annual Meeting presentation The aim of this session is to reframe the mindset about online enrollment, moving past studies comparing face-to-face and online modes of instruction to examine the extent to which taking online courses can help students achieve their goals. Drawing on a pool of 22,912 student data records from Fall 2010 to Spring 2016 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the research presented in this session focuses on the impact of taking online courses on progress toward degree and graduation rates for all students, including those who combine online and on-campus courses and Pell-eligible students. The session will also address strategies to encourage students to take online courses, focusing on 1) creating a wide array of online courses; 2) online summer session marketing campaigns and results; and 3) the role of advising. Keene State College is implementing an open education initiative to increase affordability, student engagement, and public impact. The initiative focuses on open educational resources (OER) to lower textbook costs, open pedagogy to connect students to communities, and open access to research. OER has saved students over $149,000 at UNH. KSC aims to position itself as a leader through faculty champions, an academic technology director, and department-level OER initiatives. The open education approach advances KSC's public mission by increasing access, engaging learners beyond the classroom, and maximizing scholarly impact.

Online education has clearly become a permanent feature of higher education world-wide. However, as dramatic as the technology-induced changes have been, the pace and impact of technology will intensify over the next fifteen years. Based on currently observable, documented, and quantifiable trends in higher and distance education, this paper will make predictions about the transformations in higher education that are on the horizon, with specific reference to the inexorable expansion of Open Educational Resources (OER), Open CourseWare(OCW), and continuous improvement processes. The main prediction of this presentation is that, notwithstanding the current confusion over the use of OER and OCW and the present struggles to find resources to sustain the considerable efforts that have been undertaken in the OER movement, OER and OCW are here to stay and will grow rapidly, soon to be a part of every major higher educational institution in the world. The strongest and most obvious trends in higher education all intersect with OER and OCW creating in their addition an “imperative” for these movements.

Online course enrollment is growing while traditional f2f course enrollments continue to decline. Despite the increased demand, online classes can be intimidating for first-time or non-traditional learners as they may feel isolated or uncomfortable navigating the virtual classroom while also trying to juggle academic, economic, and familial obligations. Student engagement and a sense of community are fundamental components of student success as they “increase student satisfaction, enhance student motivation to learn, reduce the sense of isolation, and improves student performance” (Martin, et al). This presentation details a pilot program at SUNY Oswego designed to familiarize students with the online course environment while creating an active and engaging online community for non-traditional learners in online and blended programs.

Oxford Area School District and Cecil College, in partnership, established an Early College Academy that enables students the opportunity to receive a high school diploma and an associate degree concurrently. Students, through a cohort approach, are scheduled for courses that fulfill the requirements of both the high school and the college. Attendees received an overview of the Early College Academy program including how students are provided with career awareness, college level study, and community support while they pursue the initial steps of their post-secondary education before high school completion. Representatives from each virtual school provided details on their programs and outlined potential research partnerships and opportunities.

MetroCard Subsidization Proposal

The document proposes a subsidized MetroCard program for NYU students. It notes that many students currently face high transportation costs, especially those completing fieldwork or classes at multiple campus locations. The proposal recommends that NYU subsidize half or the full cost of unlimited MetroCards for eligible students. An "academic subsidization model" is outlined where students could obtain subsidized MetroCards by filling out a form verified by their advisor. The program is estimated to cost NYU $457,765 per semester if subsidizing one round trip per week for eligible students. The proposal aims to increase affordability and access to transportation for academic purposes.

Improving retention and persistence in online learning

For the latest free CDE seminar we were very pleased to welcome Jon Bellum, Provost and Senior Vice-President at Colorado State University-Global Campus, to Senate House to talk about a case study for retention in online learning. Colorado State University-Global Campus is a 100% online public institution focused on providing adults with career-relevant bachelor’s and master’s degrees. A university wide retention and persistence program was designed to provide its non-traditional students with the support they needed throughout the student lifecycle. Since implementing this process improvement, CSU-Global has been able to maintain first-to-third term retention rates that exceed 80% and a four-year retention/graduation rate that exceeds 75%. The presentation ran through the processes involved in implementing this programme and reviewed the outcomes.
