Editor's Notes

  1. Good afternoon! How many people do we have in the room that attended my social media talk yesterday?Great! I am glad to see that I did not scare you all away! For those of you who I have not met yet, my name is Ashley Hennigan and I am assistant director of social media strategy at Cornell University. And today the focus of my talk will be about innovations on the verge.
  2. My goal for this presentation is to set the stage for disruptive technology in education and help you all to get a sense of where you fall in this ever evolving and quickly moving world. During this presentation I hope to Introduce the idea of innovation and disruptionGive an overview of how technology is being adoptedTalk about who technology is impacting and how this effects the admissions processI am really excited to share some of the emerging technologies that I am keeping my eye oneAnd last, give you some tools to walk away with that will help you implement a new technology or gain some organizational buy-in
  3. Let’s start with a poll. Who here feels like their work or personal life has been recently disrupted by technology?I want to get a sense of whether this disruption is more so in your personal life or work life, so hand up if you feel a greater impact in your personal life? Work life? Now think about whether or not the introduction of new technology has had an overall positive effect or negative effect on you? I want to hear about negative impacts first. Who feels technology has had a negative impact on the way you interact with your colleagues? With students? With parents? Is anyone willing to share examples? Does anyone want to share examples of positive impacts?Thank you
  4. Let’s start by explaining how new technology comes into our lives and why it might disrupt in positive and negative ways. In a work environment, the goal of implementing a new technology is to increase our efficiency. So as we are getting excited about the next new shiny object out there, efficiency should always be in the back of our mind, especially when we are setting personal and organizational goals.
  5. My background is in communication and media technology. So, I want to look at how past waves of innovation have impacted our lives to help us understand changes today. There are some other innovations that I could have added, like telegram and video calling, but in the interest of time we’ll start here. We started with in person meetings. The letter allowed us to expand our geographic reach. Then the phone really shook things up. The phone was a HUGE disruption…. Later in the 20th century we introduced email, much more efficient than the letter, but now we are seeing text messaging replacing email and social media replacing text messaging. There are still reasons to use all of these communication tools, and in order to pick the right one, we need to go back to our goals and what is most efficient.
  6. Who can relate to this?
  7. How about this one. This kind of short-hand asynchronoustext is the preferred method of communication for millennials. I had a great conversation with some folks here yesterday about kids these days struggling to make phone calls and address letters. This is why.
  8. And I love this one too. Now facebook messaging is taking a bite out of text messaging in a lot of ways. We don’t need to have someone’s phone number or even be directly connected on social media in order to send a message. On a smart phone there is very little difference between receiving a text message and receiving a facebook message, so we see these communication technologies continuing to evolve.
  9. Not everyone is going to be able to walk awayfrom this presentation today and return to their school or organization and begin implementing all the new technologies I will show you. Nor should you! Most of us here, need to watch others first, learn and assess the value and adopt innovations later. Not every organization is built to live on the cutting edge of technology, which is sometimes why we see disruption as a negative change rather than a positive one.
  10. So let’s look at our stakeholders.Technologies are influencing all of these groups. We need to understand what our capacity to adopt technology and along with our stakeholders’ ability. You might find yourself ahead of the curve while your school or organization lags behind. Maybe your school is ahead of the curve but the people that you are trying to reach do not have the capacity to interact with these new technologies in a positive way.
  11. Yes, I’m referencing Rogers Innovation adoption curve. Bare with me. Feel free to tweet that out, so people think I’m really smart and impressive. Where do we each fall in the adoption curve? Think about where you would place yourself [Poll] – Where are my innovators… Now, where would you place your colleagues? Your students? [Poll and reactions] Who is placing their students ahead of themselves on this curve? How about parents, are they on your level? College partners? [Poll] Who would place college partners on ahead of the curve? Behind the curve? It is important to visit this and to gain a little perspective. With all of your stakeholders in mind, where do you fall? [Poll] Did anyone change their answer?
  12. Now, let’s look at the communication example in terms of technology moving through the curve in your work life. These examples take communication with your stakeholders into consideration. Did you guess correctly where you fall? Now I understand this isn’t an exact science, but lets walk through these innovations and try to understand how each group is working. Innovators take on more risk and they often have the most resources on hand to do so, laggards also take on risk, but it is a risk of falling too far behind. Majority can learn from innovators and early adopters and adopt technologies will little to no risk of failure. [Poll] Generally speaking, not necessarily this example, Who are my innovators and early adopters in the room? These are the ones to watch.
  13. I’ve organized the emerging technologies that I want to present according to their impact at different stages of the admissions process. Let’s take a look at the admissions lifecycle to refresh ourselves with student needs at each step.
  14. Students are following the timeline on the right. Admissions officers are following the funnel on the left.
  15. And I showed this slide yesterday,As counselors we need to be educating and providing resources throughout the process. The intensity and desire for information does not increase as time goes on (it’s always intense) but the kind of information students need does change.
  16. And now for our emerging technologies!
  17. In the interest of time I am highlighting one emerging technology per step. As we go through each step, I may mention other groups making an impact in these spaces, please feel free to share other innovations you have come in contact with, good or bad experiences.
  18. We’ll start with the first step in the college search process, which is advocacy and giving students a desire to pursue higher education. If you don’t already have a solid advocacy program in place, or if this is one of your schools’ or organizational goals, it can be a daunting task to create a program on your own. [Show video] Learning Success is a fairly new site launched by the CB Advocacy & Policy center. They offer ten different learning modules including – Creating a College Going CultureCollaborative Leadership: Mentoring and CoachingBuilding an Inclusive School CulturePersonalizing the School ExperiencePrincipal, Counselor, Student ConnectionsBuilding Capacity Through Professional Networksand more
  19. If we can implement the leading success program, What can welearn from it?
  20. Full disclosure, the next two innovators work with me on a weekly webcast for college admission professionals, but it is not why they made this slideshow. Zinch.com is a college search and recruitment tool that allows students to create professional college-bound profiles to present themselves as “more than just a test score.” The site aggregates college facts and figures like many others do, but what I like about Zinch is, it is built to get students thinking about college fit rather than other outside influences like where their parents think they go or what the US News rankings say. The service also lives through the college search process allowing partner schools to connect and recruit students through the platform. Zinch also offers free test prep and scholarship matching.
  21. Welcome to College is a service that aids students in the college visit experience. The service is essentially an online journal that helps students record their reactions to their visit experience (either privately or publically) and compare their results with other schools they have visited or the reactions that others have had. [show video] So you saw what is nice about this service is that it puts all the hassle of planning these visits into one place. They have links to schedule visits, hotel and restaurant information, etc. It is a free service and it is open to parents and school counselors too. Keep an eye on these folks. I happen to know their mission is expanding to also offer college bus tours around the country, specifically targeting those students who do not have the resources to travel.
  22. One of the most critical parts of the application process is keeping students on track to meet deadlines for testing and credential submission. A new start-up called College Snapps is entering this space with a mobile application that will serve precisely these student needs. This is an example that is way out ahead of the curve and a concept to watch and learn from. The application is designed to send students reminders, when they need them and will prompt students with follow up questions about their process. All of this information will be fed to an administrator dashboard that you can view real-time feedback and identify and address students who may be falling behind. The company also has a unique focus on supporting community based organizations. They are currently in development at the 1776 campus in DC and will be piloting their application this fall.
  23. Right around the time college acceptance letters come out is about the time students realize they can’t afford to attend the colleges at the top of their list. Campus Slice is taking a nod fro the crowd funding space to allow students to put financing their education in their own hands by sourcing funding from their community. [show video]Campus Slice has begun partnering with colleges, so you may see this crowd funding platform including in some financial aid packages. How it works – students create a college fund on the Campus Slice website. They can do this at anytime in their high school career. It is open to any student who would like to create an account. They have a new site coming out next month and they are looking to partner with high schools and community based organizations as they launch. They can also customize the site with your school’s brand, if you would like to make it a school-wide initiative.

  25. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday in my “Effective Use of Social Media” presentation talking about the value of Facebook groups for students. I have happy to share those slides with you. Summer is a critical time for students. The number one reason students who plan to enroll in May but don’t show up in September is a lack of access to information. They no longer have a connection to their school counselor and peers and they do not yet have access to their new administration or new peer group. Colleges have learned that this works very well. Many use facebook, others have their own private networks. My high school graduating class recently set up a group for my 10-year reunion. Encourage your students to join these groups! They are very valuable in this transition time.

  27. It is easy to get caught up in new and exciting technology. Each new shiny object might not do the job it is supposed to in the most efficient way for your organization, or you might be too far ahead of the curve for your stakeholders. That is why it is important to put goals before tools. Make your goals specific enough that you know when you have reached them. Think about how you will prove to others that they have been a success, this typically involves some sort of tracking or measurement. Pick a goal that is attainable, by your best guess. The goal should relate to the overall goals of your school or organization. And you should give yourself a time limit to reach the goal, whether it is short-term or long-term.
  28. Hopefully you now have a better understanding of where you and your stakeholders fall in the innovation adoption curve. While I don’t expect you to give the same lecture to your colleagues, it is helpful for them to understand what new technologies are being tested in the field. While you are here this week, network with innovators and early adopters so you are able to follow up on their progress and learn from their experiences. If you want to start moving the needle in your school. I recommend asking for a small pilot group where a disruption would increase efficiency in one area that is directly related to larger organizational goals. Keep in mind you may need to pilot without all the needed resources and prove your success before being granted the resources you need to scale up the program in the future.
