MetroCard Subsidization Proposal
Silver School of Social Work
The Need for Subsidization
• Silver students paying “out-of-pocket” for up to three swipes a day
completing required field work
• No support financially from school
• Field work is required to complete degree
• Initial funding proposal was rejected
Tandon School of Engineering
The Need for Subsidization
• No Route A until Fall 2014
• Route A has limited route options
• Many students cannot take Route A because class times do not
match route times
• No Friday, Saturday, or Sunday routes. Some classes take place on
Friday and Saturday
METROCARD SUBSIDIZATION
Following the resolution unanimously passed by members of the SSC urging the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York City to
reduce the cost of service feeds for students, the SSC recommends that the University subsidize the purchase of
MTA services for all full-time, post-secondary students studying at NYU.

The SSC recommends that the Office of University Transportation purchase monthly, unlimited-use MetroCards for students,
subsidizing half of the cost or purchasing the the cards for the entirety of the semester. At a cost of $466.00 for one student to
purchase an unlimited-use MetroCard for four months, the university would supplement half of the cost students would ordinarily
incur, the university would spend $233.00 per student that enrolls in the program. Assuming that approximately 20,000
full-time undergraduate and graduate students per semester enroll in the program, the university
would incur a base cost of approximately $4.66 million per semester, in addition to the costs
associated with administering the program.

Similar to the process students use to register and pay for NYU-affiliated housing and meal plans, the SSC recommends that the
program be administered through the Bursar’s payment suite, which would allow students to utilize financial aid towards the costs of
the program. The SSC is particularly concerned with the affordability of NYU, and strongly believes this is one way to reduce the costs
students incur studying at a university in and of the city.
SABAC Request
• We realized problems were not limited to
Silver and Tandon
• Transportation Task Force found that
University Transportation also had high
cost per passenger

Goals of Team MetroCard
Submit a successful SABAC request for MetroCard
funding
Teach University Administrators about the significant
financial burden that students face with transportation

Receive financial funding for transportation related to
academic purposes
