The University of Chicago is reinventing its alumni engagement in admissions by moving from in-person alumni interviews to optional video interviews and reallocating alumni support to mentoring, off-campus recruitment, and employment opportunities. To facilitate this change, the university will use a new digital platform called Wisr to connect applicants directly to alumni and relevant resources through chat messaging and discussions while also sharing data with the university's applicant tracking system. The changes aim to empower more students, make the review process more equitable, and recruit fresh alumni volunteers while anticipating some attrition from current volunteers.

The Kingston Hawks SQC was started by students to improve communication between students and the university. They created a Facebook page called the "Kingston University Business Faculty Student Forum" to give students a place to voice issues and opinions. Over time, the page grew to 300 members. Moving forward, the SQC plans to recruit new members and continue marketing the Facebook forum at events like Freshers Fair to further encourage communication and student involvement.

The Higher Education Reauthorization Act directs regional accrediting agencies to require institutions that offer distance education to verify that students completing distance education courses are the same students registered for the courses. Regional accrediting agencies will need to update their standards, train visiting teams, and monitor institutions on this issue. The Department of Education may issue regulations through a negotiated rulemaking process starting in spring 2009. Representatives are discussing this issue and institutions should be prepared to explain their processes for authenticating distance students when reviewed by their accrediting agency.

Sustainability as Imperative: The Unavoidable Future for OCW

Online education has clearly become a permanent feature of higher education world-wide. However, as dramatic as the technology-induced changes have been, the pace and impact of technology will intensify over the next fifteen years. Based on currently observable, documented, and quantifiable trends in higher and distance education, this paper will make predictions about the transformations in higher education that are on the horizon, with specific reference to the inexorable expansion of Open Educational Resources (OER), Open CourseWare(OCW), and continuous improvement processes. The main prediction of this presentation is that, notwithstanding the current confusion over the use of OER and OCW and the present struggles to find resources to sustain the considerable efforts that have been undertaken in the OER movement, OER and OCW are here to stay and will grow rapidly, soon to be a part of every major higher educational institution in the world. The strongest and most obvious trends in higher education all intersect with OER and OCW creating in their addition an “imperative” for these movements.
