When students hear about group work, they often groan. Multiply that by the challenges presented in an online learning environment, and sometimes even the professors groan! With online course quality measures that recommend student interaction and group activities and calls to create classrooms that encourage collaboration and critical thinking, faculty need to find new ways to conquer group work dilemmas. This session offers practical strategies for facilitation of group work, both online and in-class. The session will include innovative ways to select students for group membership, techniques for management and accountability, and suggestions for group assignments. Participants will be encouraged to share their own tips and strategies for facilitating successful group assignments.

The course used principles of experiential, self-directed, and connectivist learning by allowing users to learn at their own pace through interactive activities and videos that demonstrated how to use Blackboard tools. Usage statistics showed that while many visited the site, few engaged deeply with the interactive elements, and a survey found that most users who knew of the site found it useful, with the main lesson being that better promotion was needed to increase awareness of the training among new staff.

Malcolm Brown and Veronica Diaz will moderate this online seminar with Tanya Joosten, Dylan Barth, and Nicole Weber from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. As the demand for blended and online learning opportunities increases, so does the need to ensure the quality of online education through faculty development programming. And with the increase in the diffusion of blended and online programming across higher education institutions, stakeholders are looking for ways to ensure the quality of the student experience and better understand the impact on student outcomes. Recently, many of us have been asked to provide evidence of the effectiveness of our faculty development programming: administrators are looking for a return on investment in faculty development to ensure quality in blended and online programming, as we are seeing decreases in state funding and enrollments, which leads to cut budgets. In order to for us to determine the effectiveness of our programming using a backwards design approach, we need to first understand what is a good online or blended course as well as what competencies are required of faculty to teach blended and online courses and how those can be best facilitated in a faculty development program. Then we can consider how to evaluate the impact on student outcomes. This workshop will offer a collaborative and interactive opportunity to connect with colleagues to consider and construct how the effectiveness of faculty development programming can be determined and disseminated. A model of evaluation for a faculty development program will be shared. ICT are transforming Cuban higher education towards the adoption of blended-learning and distance learning. This dissertation focuses on investigating the effectiveness of using social software to support collaborative learning in a Cuban university. Five studies were conducted within three phases that included diagnostic, integration and validation of the social software that was used to support collaborative learning. A didactic model was created to integrate social software within Cuban teaching and learning in higher education. Social Network Analysis and content analysis were used to evaluate the effectiveness of social software to support students' learning through their collaborative learning relationships and through their posts in wiki pages and online discussions. Statistical analysis was used to evaluate students' self-efficacy as a measure of their achievements in social software-supported collaborative learning. The findings confirmed social software’s suitability to support collaborative learning, as it increased collaborative learning's effectiveness, compared to face-to-face collaborative learning. Specific findings were revealed for the use of wikis and online discussions within teaching and learning, which are extendable to other social software tools. A didactic model to integrate social software in Cuban teaching and learning, as well as a framework to analyse students' interactions, were used for first time and validated to extend its use among Cuban university stakeholders.
