Expectations of Mentors
- As part of CQUniversity’s
Student Mentor and Leadership Program
Be Professional
• Remember you are representing the University –
whilst it is important to have fun and be engaging;
 language, content and behaviour MUST be
professional and appropriate at all times
• Confidentiality is key!
Lead by Example
• Have a positive attitude about study and of
CQUniversity
• Be a Role Model
• Open doors using effective referral
Commit Time
• Set yourself a goal of regular communications with
your Mentee (we require a minimum of 5 specific
communications)
• Ask questions – specific or general
A Shared Experience..
• Share your experiences and stories, and lessons learnt
with your Mentees
• Encourage your Mentees to share their stories
• Listen
• Provide a supportive, non-judgemental peer relationship
Be a Guide
• Share useful contacts and where to find help
• Provide information around CQUniversity’s
processes and procedures
• Help your mentees learn to navigate the system
Meet-Up (in person or online)
• Having a “conversation” builds relationships faster
than email and forums
• Display good communication skills and promote
an open and honest relationship
Be a Motivator…
• Encourage participation in non-academic activities
and opportunities
• Help mentees develop their problem solving skills
and become independent learners
• Encourage goal setting
Share Goals
• What do you want to achieve in the long-term?
• Share your goals and ambitions and encourage
your Mentees to share theirs
Empowerment
• Reflect and share your progress in achieving your
goals – in a mindful manner
• Encourage your Mentees to share their successes!
Share your journey
• Provide feedback
• Become a future Mentor Leader
Additional Notes:
• Accept that you may not get any response from some of
your Mentees regardless of what you do – they may like
the reassurance of having you available but not feel they
actively need help.
• Keep safe:
• If meeting in person - be on campus and in public spaces
• Keep online communication within CQU systems – student
email or UCROO
• By communicating with you, Mentees can gain a better
understanding of a problem and work out their own
solutions
• It is important to remember whatever matter is discussed,
it is the mentee who must make any decisions or take any
actions required.

Additional Notes: • Accept that you may not get any response from some of your Mentees regardless of what you do – they may like the reassurance of having you available but not feel they actively need help. • Keep safe: • If meeting in person - be on campus and in public spaces • Keep online communication within CQU systems – student email or UCROO • By communicating with you, Mentees can gain a better understanding of a problem and work out their own solutions • It is important to remember whatever matter is discussed, it is the mentee who must make any decisions or take any actions required.
