The defining structural characteristic of the
latter half of the twentieth century was the
conflict between the two “superpowers” that
emerged at the end of World War II. After
thirty years of war and its consequences in
Europe, Germany’s and Italy’s military ca-
pacities were almost completely destroyed

After World War II, the two nations emerged as superpowers with opposing economic and political ideologies - capitalism vs communism. This ideological conflict resulted in a war of ideas as well as proxy wars and an arms race as each nation attempted to limit the influence and power of the other. Key events of tension included the Soviet control of Eastern Europe, the Berlin Blockade, the division and conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, and the Cuban Missile Crisis which brought the two sides closest to nuclear war. This led to the division of Europe with the Iron Curtain splitting the Western and Eastern blocs. The US responded with the policies of containment and the Truman Doctrine to provide military and economic aid to countries threatened by communism. The Marshall Plan provided billions in economic aid to rebuild Western Europe which the Soviet Union rejected.

Linear Measurements: Instruments used. Linear Measurement by Tape, Ranging out Survey Lines and overcoming Obstructions; Measurements on sloping ground; Tape corrections, conventional symbols. Angular Measurements: Instruments used; Introduction to Compass Surveying, Bearings and Longitude & Latitude of a Line, Introduction to total station.
Levelling: Instrument used Object of levelling, Methods of levelling in brief, and Contour maps.

Buildings: Selection of site for Buildings, Layout of Building Plan, Types of buildings, Plinth area, carpet area, floor space index, Introduction to building byelaws, concept of sun light & ventilation.
