After World War 2, Korea was divided along the 38th parallel, with the Soviet Union occupying the north and the United States occupying the south. In 1950, North Korean Communists invaded South Korea, prompting the UN Security Council to send troops led by the US to support the South. This started the Korean War between the North and South. Although US General MacArthur wanted to expand the war against China, President Truman limited it to Korea. An armistice was eventually signed in 1953, containing communism in Korea without the use of nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Mao Zedong led a communist revolution in China in 1949, establishing it as a communist state.
