The Renaissance spread from Italy to Northern Europe in the 15th century after the Hundred Years' War ended. It began in Flanders and was influenced by wealthy rulers who employed Italian artists. Northern Renaissance art had more Christian themes and a focus on realism, as seen in the works of Flemish painters. The printing press also spread ideas. Northern Humanism, exemplified by Desiderius Erasmus and Thomas More, focused more on Christianity and education reform than classical texts. Erasmus criticized the exorbitance of church leaders in his book "The Praise of Folly". Shakespeare lived in Elizabethan England and performed at the Globe Theatre, drawing from classics but focusing on human flaws and emotions.
