1) Nipah virus is an emerging zoonotic RNA virus from the genus Henipavirus that is related to Hendravirus. 2) It was first identified during an outbreak in Malaysia in 1998 where it infected pigs and humans. Subsequent outbreaks have occurred in other areas through contact with infected bats or pigs or consumption of contaminated date palm sap. 3) Symptoms in humans include fever, headache and progressing to drowsiness, disorientation and coma. Treatment is supportive care and isolation to prevent spread. Vaccines are under development but none currently available.
