are often thought to be manipulators who tell you what you want to hear to and hide truths to
get you to buy their product. It s important to give people a great first impression so they can relate
to you on a more personal level, and possibly get rid of any bad feelings they may have about
dealing with a salesperson. Staci said her best advice is to give a great first impression, be

knowledge come from? The communication of scientific knowledge trickles in a fashion opposite
to that of the filtration of water through a carbon scrubber, where the highest concentration of pure
scientific knowledge exists within the prestigious community of scientists and scientific knowledge
within the academic and public communities has to be filtered from the other particles of ideas,
leaving much room for interpretation. This paper will explore these different interactions among
various communities and how it shapes communication of scientific knowledge. One such
community is that of the very scientists who do the research and publications which supply much
of the scientific knowledge we know today. However, research and publishing is heavily time
consuming and expensive so many scientist must seek out funding. Bias, or a conflict of interest,
can be argued to exist in all aspects of science depending on when and how results are obtained. It
is without discourse than to argue that all research, even that done at collegiate level, has some
amount of bias whether from the funding received, the council from professors or advisors, or the
availability of more advanced technology to obtain data (Krimsky 2012). Such bias from

My Reflection Of Leadership
During my last spring semester at Fort Hays State University, I became aware that in order to
finish my bachelor s degree, I would have to take one more class prior to walking across the
stage at graduation in May. At that time, I was just ready to be done, so I hoped for something
fast and easy. When I saw the requirements for this class, I knew that wasn t going to be the case
at all. I saw the number of books I would read and the number of papers I would write and I am
not going to lie, I felt like I was going to be overwhelmed. However, when this class started, I
became more excited about it. I received my books and skimmed through briefly and could not
wait to get my nose into them. Each one sounded like something I could gain great knowledge
from. My greatest expectation from this class was to be able to develop myself both

The least persuasive essay out of the four was Harlan Ellison s An Edge in My Voice. Ellison
presents his argument in a style that seems to me is more of a disgruntled rambling about both
famous and infamous people that die from gun shot, than an article about gun control. Ellison
spends the first few pages asking the reader if they cried when a certain person died; he begins
with famous people such as Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, and John Lennon, and then
moves on to more obscure examples. Instead of trying to build an argument, Ellison seemed to be
more caught up with anger and the notion of conspiracies. He does however try to use the
intensify technique of Rank s model, to persuade the reader of the horror of deaths caused by guns
and their importance. Although Ellison did try to persuade his audience in a different manor, I felt
it was ineffective at best, due to his repetition and exaggeration.
From these four articles written by Franken, Snyder, Ellison, and Will I personally found Will s
piece to be the most persuasive with Franken s not far behind. Will s approach was more formal
while Franken s style was more satirical, but I felt both authors were able to incorporate Rank s
model and persuade the reader more subtlety than the other authors
