The Four Basic Principles Of Design
The four basic principles of design will be incorporated into my journal cover project in order to make
my designs visually stimulating and organized. During the designing process, the principle of
proximity will help me group together images and words that are closely associated with one another,
so it will be clear to viewers which items are related to one another, and those that are not. Williams s
explanation of alignment rules will help ensure that words and images are not randomly thrown on the
cover, and will also remind me to commit to one type of alignment, unless it becomes necessary for
me to use more than one. I will utilize the principle of repetition in order to make my main ideas
distinct; a conscientious effort will be made to go beyond my usual use of repetition through the use of
different font styles, headings, images, etc. The principle of contrast will help my designs become
more visually appealing and will allow me to be more creative with my color schemes. After I have
completed my two illustrations, the four principles will also serve as a final checklist, to ensure that
my designs clearly project the theme of The Future of Technical Communication, and are easily
understandable. My first journal cover will feature two images diagonally placed from one another,
with blurred text to the sides of each. I decided to include two different sections of text because
although it all contributes to the general theme, the text is separated by association; by

Gregor Mendel s Fruit Flies Essay
Gregor Mendel s Fruit Flies
Introduction From simple heredity experiments with garden peas, to cloning sheep, the field of
genetics has come a long way. Now we are closer to mapping out the human genetic map due to
advances in technology, and years and years of research. Perhaps the most influential and
groundbreaking scientist, Gregor Mendel, he was responsible to provide a path to where genetics is
now today with his experiments of garden peas.
In lab, fruit flies were crossed to observe inheritance patterns in their offspring. The motivation for
this was to further understand how genes and characteristics are inherited. To use fruit flies would be
much more effective and easier because of a couple of reasons. The ... Show more content on

The F1?s were then observed and then crossed to form the F2 generation.
Genetic Hypothesis The F1 generation hypothesis is that with the Line A, B cross, the F1 for our
group will be expected to be heterozygous dominant (VvBb) at both loci. This is because of the cross
of Line A, which was consisting of Males with the genotype of vvBB, and of line B that were females
with the genotype VVbb. As far as the F2 generations go, the phenotypes are expected to have a
9:3:3:1 ratio. There should be 9 brown, normal fruit flies, and 3 of each the brown, vestigial fly and
the white, long fly. Finally, there is expected to be only one white, vestigial fly that possesses
homozygous recessive alleles in both loci. There is a chance that there may be different outcomes to
the F2 generation due to the possibility that the Line A and the Line B generation were not all
homozygous dominant in wing type for females and eye color in males. Such a genotype in the males,
vvBb, and such in females, Vvbb, may lead to a different ratio in the F2 offspring.
Methods In the lab section, we observed two vials containing the Line A and B species. In order for us
to further examine the flies, we ?knocked out? the flies with a chemical anesthetic known as Fly Nap.
Placing the wand covered in Fly Nap into the vial, we ?knocked out? the flies. We then spilled the
flies onto a piece of paper and examined them under a light microscope. What were examined were

Chinese Gratitude And Gratitude
[Abstract]: Gratitude is a recognition of others help, it is very important to express thankful in our
social communication. Also, gratitude plays an important role in our interpersonal communication, it
is indispensable for good interpersonal relationship. However, due to the differences between Chinese
and western cultures, there are many differences in the language of gratitude and reply, which can
have different effects on our communication. Therefore, it is very necessary to understand the
difference between English and Chinese thanks and the difference of answer, correct understanding
and application of thanks. In this essay, I will compare those differences in this essay.

When a customer order a juice and the waiter say yes, he express his thankful out of politeness.
Excuse me, do you have A New Coursebook in Pragmatics ?
Sorry, they are sold out.
OK, thank you. In China, people will not say thank you only if someone helps them or they get
something from others. According to our own social and cultural politeness guidelines, they don not
need to be thankful for service because it is their duty to provide services.
你好,我要一杯奶茶。
好的,请稍等。
Here the customer ordered a cup of milk tea, and the end of this communication is said by the waiter.
About the object of giving thanks, Chinese culture is different due to the differences of interpersonal
relations: for a purely working relationship, does not contain helpful subjective cordiality can thank,
can also don t have to say thank you; Interpersonal relationships in colleagues, acquaintances and
social activities should be treated differently depending on the relationship, hierarchy. Chinese people
usually do not express thankful to their close friends and their families because they think it is rusty
with each other. If the Chinese mother help her daughter washes her dress, she will not say thank you
to her mother but in English countries, the mother will think her daughter is rude. Usually in Chinese
family, parents will not say thank you to their children but express thankful in a way which western

In light of what we know about how people learn, how shall we best teach?
Cindy Vang
Concordia University, St. Paul, ED514.671
Professor Chuck McGill
December 12, 2016
There is not a single correct way to teach, but the best way to teach is to discover what teaching
philosophy, theories, and pedagogies work for your teaching style. The best way to teach is unique to
each individual teacher. Even so, there are some aspects of teaching that are important to being an
effective teacher. Some of the facets I will be discussing include understanding the Concordia
University Educator as Professional Decision Maker, Reflective Practitioner, and Adaptive Expert
conceptual framework, learning theories to consider, and effective classroom practices.
Concordia University s (2015) mission for the Department of Graduate Teacher Education is to
prepar[e] professionals at the advanced/graduate level to be decision makers, reflective practitioners,

Essay about Mobey Dick
Herman Melville s Moby Dick is a book which can be read as a general metaphor for the battle
between the evil powers of the Devil versus the divine powers of God and Jesus, both try to obtain the
souls of mankind in order to assist in each other s destruction. In this metaphor, the Devil is shown
through the person of Captain Ahab, God becomes nature, Jesus is seen as the White Whale, and the
representation of mankind is the crew. The voyage of the Pequod, therefore, is a representation of a
similar voyage of mankind on earth, until the death of Jesus, during the whole thing the influences of
these three supernatural forces are connected. Thus, the basis of this idea is that ... Show more content

quot; The hand of fate had snatched all their souls, and by the stirring perils of the previous day; the
rack of the past night s suspense; the fixed, unfearing, blind, reckless way in which their wild craft

that made great bellied sails, and rushed the vessel on by arms invisible as irresistible; this seemed the
symbol of that unseen agency which so enslaved them to the race, quot; (p.606)
Relating to the metaphor, this passage can be viewed as giving the possibility of God as symbolized
through the medium of nature in Moby Dick. The quot;wind , thought about in this sense, is an
quot;unseen agency quot; of the motivation of God, which leads men s souls to the right paths.
However, it is not a representational term found just in Melville s book. This quot;wind quot; appears
as an indication of God in the opening lines of the book of Genesis, and can also represented when
God breathes life into man. Another similarity between the Biblical representation of God and this
passage is shown through the thought of arms. Just as God acts in the Bible by stretching out his right
arm and commanding good or

Social Stigma Of Mental Illness
behavior is seen as threatening, society results to punishing them or avoiding them (Hinshaw, 2007, p.
7). An example of this is that each year in the United States between 5 and 6 million individuals with
mental disorders lose, fail to seek, or cannot find employment as a consequence of their mental illness
(Hinshaw, 2007, p. 124).
Causes and Impact of Social Stigma How society responds to mental illnesses is mainly influenced by
the amount of knowledge they have regarding mental disorders (Hinshaw, 2007, p. 7). Thus the way in
which mental disorders is defined has major implications for social responses (Hinshaw, 2007, p. 7).
People who suffer from mental illness have different behaviors than others; as a result, people in

Stutzman provides insight on a different way to define mental illnesses because, like Hinshaw, she
does not find that behavior that is deviant from statistical and societal norms necessarily means
someone is mentally ill (personal communication, May 25, 2017). Instead in the field of psychology
and psychiatry, mental illnesses is also defined as behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that cause
distress and impairment in someone s life (K. Stutzman, personal communication, May 25, 2017).
Instead of being a deviance of social and statistical norms, mental illness is more a reflection of
impaired functioning in the realm of social, occupational, and personal issues (K. Stutzman, personal
communication, May 25, 2017). Efforts have been made to shift the model of mental illnesses from a
dichotomy to view mental illnesses in more shades of grey (K. Stutzman, personal communication,
May 25, 2017). The media also greatly impacts the social stigma of mental illnesses (Corrigan
Watson, 2002, p. 17; Davey, 2013; Friedman, 2014). The mentally ill are often negatively portrayed in
movies and the news (Corrigan Watson, 2002, p. 17; Davey, 2013; Friedman, 2014). In fact, results
from an analysis of English language movies featuring at least one main character with schizophrenia
released from 1990 2010 depicted that a majority of characters displayed

The Rise Of The Italian Renaissance
The Italian Renaissance, in contrast to the conservative attitude of the Middle Ages, introduced a
society dominated by a secular, humanistic spirit. One of the most historically significant events of the
Renaissance was the Reformation. Some people argue that the Reformation was a rejection the secular
spirit of the Italian Renaissance. Others assert that the Reformation was an embracement of these
secular ideas. However as with many questions, this issue cannot be given a definite answer. The
events of sixteenth century Europe shows that the Reformation rejected secular ideas in some ways
and embraced them in others. Martin Luther defied the Catholic Church and formed his own ideas on
salvation, embracing secularism. In England, Henry VIII would reject Catholic authority, thereby
accepting the secular spirit. However, he also rejected secularism by continuing to uphold traditional
Catholic theology. Edward VI and Mary I would both establish national religion, of which there was
no questioning, and reject the secular spirit. Elizabeth I also established a national religion, but her
more conservative religious policies reflected her embracement of secular ideas. On the other hand,
John Calvin created a religious sect that was dedicated to ardent religious devotion and righteousness,
thereby rejecting secularism. Thus, the Reformation both rejected and embraced the secular spirit of
the Italian Renaissance.

military in the Desert Shield and Desert Storm War. His leadership was showcased as the Secretary of
State advising President Bush. Colin Powell was viewed the The most trusted man in America

wise leadership from his positions at highest level of government for four presidential administrations.
He has helped guide the nation through some of it most heart wrenching hours. Colin Powell is
considered a visionary because he developed the Powell Doctrine by using idealized influence to
persuade President Bush to use overwhelming force to essential win the war in 4 days. Also, he was an
ethical leader by challenging the Republican Party on race against African Americans as he supported
Barack Obama during the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. Because of this support he fell into
the ethical trap of the loyalty syndrome to Barack Obama or the Republican party. I ll also discuss my
personal relevance to visionary leadership for leading the Fitness Improvement Program (FIP). I too

Analysis Of Jacqueline Woodson s Brown Girl Dreaming
In Jacqueline Woodson s Brown Girl Dreaming, Jackie finds a sense of comfort in Greenville, South
Carolina, which is her first long time home and where she spends most of her pivotal growing years;
for me my first long time home was on Guido street in Oakland, California, this is where I felt the
comfortable to grow and learn freely.
Greenville, South Carolina gives Jackie the feeling of comfort, safety and protection from the harsh
outside world. On a cold winter night Jackie is sitting on her porch resting her head in her grandfather
s warm arm, she look[s] up and the earth stops in a blanket of stars...[she doesn t] need words on a
night like this, just warmth [and] the silent promise that the world as [she] know[s] it will always be
here (58). When her mother comes late in the night to take her to New York she wants to protest, but
[she] is to sleepy to tell [her mother] that Greenville is home [because] even in the winter, the crickets
sing [them] to sleep (137). When she is looking at the stars, she is comfortable and safe. A blanket of
stars is like a blanket which warms and comforts you when you sleep, A blanket can also make
someone feel safe, at least for me. When I was little, when I would get scared I would hide under my
blanket. Jackie is under the covers already since she is looking up to the blanket of stars, growing up

Tone Of The Prelude
The Prelude: William Wordsworth s The Prelude, written in blank verse is an autobiographical poem
written from 1798 to 1799. Throughout the excerpt the speaker has changing responses to his
experience and conveys his responses with varying diction, imagery, and tone style. There are three
changes in the speaker s response to his surroundings, which portray his changing emotion throughout
the piece. The transitions occur on lines 11, 24, and 34. Tones of adventure, decisiveness, obstruction,
and darkness are used throughout the work. The speaker changes his tone during the transition from
the first to second section. He starts in the first with an awe filled and adventurous tone. He then

The speaker s tone goes from nervous and scared to dim and dark. The man has had to turn around and
go back because of his fear for the humongous mountain that seemed to be encroaching upon his
every move. The word choice of and through the meadows homeward went, in grave and serious
mood; shows how he left his boat with a feeling of sadness, but had not yet been robbed of his joy.
But, in the next section his starting word choice of but after I had seen that spectacle, for many days,
my brain worked with a dim and undetermined sense of unknown modes of being shows that he doesn
t even know how to feel anymore in light of recent events. This marks the change in him from sadness
to dim apathy. His imagery of there hung a darkness and no familiar shapes remained parallels the
complete emptiness he feels in his soul. The speaker once again refers back to the environment when
he uses no pleasant images of trees , of sea and sky , and no colours of green fields . He uses this
environmental imagery to show that his life is now devoid of all color. He closes this excerpt with like

The Effects Of Music On Memorization

The Effects of Music on Memorization
Remember a song that came out about 10 years ago, and maybe you haven t heard it in a while, but as
soon as it comes on the radio, you recall all the words and are able to sing along? How about retaking
a quiz from last spring, would you be able to just recall the information spoken to you from the lecture
pertaining to the quiz content? The second task doesn t seem as easy, so perhaps the tune of a song
triggers something in the brain that makes memorization more simple than just hearing spoken words.
Discovering new ways to teach and recall information successfully is an important topic to research

It is also expected that individuals in a public location will recall less words than individuals in a
private location. Obtaining data that supports the hypotheses would indicate that music might be a
factor in enhancing memorization and being able to retain information more successfully, along with
being a private location.
The first article used for research in this study is titled, Memory for Music: Effect of Melody on
Recall of Text. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of recalling text when it is heard
as a song, rather than just spoken. The idea behind this comes from the role in memory
representations. It was hypothesized that, the tune will provoke learning and recall of the text through
rhyme and rhythm (Wallace, 1994, p. 1472). There was a sung version of two songs and a spoken
version of the songs recorded on a tape. There were 64 undergraduate participants for the study.
Participants listened to three verses from the recorded songs and were then asked to write down the
words they could remember, in a short time span between hearing the verses the first and fifth time.
Participants heard a song five times and were asked to write down what they had retained after
specific trials. It was found that participants that heard the song being sung were able to recall more
words than the participants who listened to the words of the song, but in spoken form. Even with
hearing two songs and trying

Inorganic Chemicals Cause Water Pollution
Inorganic chemicals is one of most important causes to water pollutants. These inorganic pollutants
naturally found in environment but due to human develepment activities, these pollutant amount has
been increasing rapidly and released into water bodies. The most common inorganic pollutants from
water are ammonium, phosphorus, arsenic, cadmiun, zinc, lead etc. It is highly toxic to human and
environment (Choi et al., 2011). The inorganic pollutant such as ammonia and phosphorus promote
eutrophication, which excessive amounts of these inorganic pollutant releasing into the water can
accelerate this phenomena in a few years (Donald M et al., 2002). The overgrowth of plants and
subsequent death have been created green layer on the surface of water bodies. These layer can be
blocked the penetration of light and oxidation process into the water bodies. Thus, depletion of
dissolved oxygen can be occurred in the water and affected aquatic life. The death and decay of
aquatic life contribute unpleasant smells and increasing the turbidity of water bodies (Conley et al.,
2009). In additional, the heavy metal such as arsenic can causes skin, lung, bladder, and kidney cancer
as well as pigmentation changes, skin thickening (hyperkeratosis) neurological disorders, muscular
weakness, loss of appetite, and nausea (Mohan and Pittman, 2007). The long term exposure to

Racial Discrimination Effect on Labor Market
The earliest form of racial discrimination against Asian Americans was encountered during the
California Gold Rush. The Gold Rush attracted Chinese immigrants who came to California to fill the
high demand for laborers. However, as more and more Chinese immigrated to California and the
lower paying labor jobs were filled, the Chinese began filling higher paying positions typically held
by Whites. As a result, an anti Chinese Movement was formed followed by the enactment of the
Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 which prevented any additional Chinese immigration into the United
States. Essentially, Chinese were discriminated against by the Whites due to fear of the Chinese taking

In most cases, the relationship between education and wages is widely accepted since lower education
level equates to lower knowledge and skills, qualifying workers for only low paying jobs. Also, the
inability to speak fluent English may have hindered Hispanic wages and employment. The inability to
communicate in English affects individuals performance especially in jobs that require close
interaction with English speaking customers (16). Latinos working on a full time basis earned
approximately $549 per week in 2011 which represented only 71% of what was earned by Whites.
This wage gap has been steady even during recession periods. However, unlike other ethnic minority
groups, the wage disparities between Whites and Latinos are also clearly attributable to differences in
education, work experience, and other demographic characteristics (Charles and Guryan 510).
According to the statistics from researchers, the effect of poor English on wages varies, with some
reports indicating 30% of the wage disparity between Hispanics and Whites is attributable to the
language barrier. Hispanics who do not speak English are relegated to positions which require little to
no customer interaction, primarily in the agricultural industry. The challenge of speaking fluent
English is common among the Hispanics. As noted in 1976, only 18% of the Hispanic workers in the
United States spoke fluent or even partially fluent English. In 1979, the overall annual earnings for

Rise Of Spain Research Paper

African Americans And African American Culture Essay
Exactly how black is black America? African American culture in the United States has evolved
continuously throughout United States history carrying on various cultural traditions of African ethnic
groups brought here during slavery. The U.S. Census Bureau defines African Americans as a person
having origins in any of the Black race groups of Africa. [1]. African American culture is derived
chiefly from people originated from sub Saharan and Sahelian cultures in Africa. Over hundreds of
years, black culture has partially been assimilated into western ideals in America. However, despite
the persistent persecutions of slave culture , the African influences brought here has evolved and
continues to be relevant through Black American artwork, literature, musical production, cuisines, and
language still present in their societies. These are all spirited by influences of the Africa nation that
originated the black culture here in present times.
Artwork has been an imperative part of Black culture, and many artist share their inspirations coming
from African origins. From the beginning of slave societies to present day, African America artwork
has contributed to large parts of United States artistic collection. Beginning in the early 1600 to 1800
black art took the form of small drums, quilts, wrought iron figures and ceramic vessels in the
southern United States. These artifacts have similarities with comparable crafts in West and Central
Africa. The significance of the

Manipulation In Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants
Ernest Hemingway, author of Hills like White Elephants, ties in the theme of a person s use of
manipulation in life changing decisions. What helps Hemingway convey this theme is by using an
objective third person point of view, which helps give the readers an unbiased interpretation of the
story. Hemingway also blends in symbolism into his writing with using elephants and the actions of
drinking that hold together the overall theme of the story. By using these styles of symbolism and
objective point of view, Hemingway is able to convey the theme of manipulation throughout the story.
In this short story, the main characters are an American man and a woman named Jig. The readers are
able to obtain an accurate account of the motions that proceed throughout the text. Hemingway s third
person narrative helps reassure the theme by the constant awkwardness throughout the conversation.
For example, Hemingway writes, Oh yes. But I don t care ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most symbolic is the title of the novel. Hills like white elephants is a simile that helps connect the
theme of manipulation to this story of abortion. For example, Jig uses this quote to manipulate her
way out of the conversation with the American, to avoid the elephant in the room of abortion. Another
example of white elephants influences in this novel is when Fig says, They don t really look like white
elephants (Hemingway pg. 592) . This quote is up to interpretation, however it seems that Fig retracts

Accidental Shootings
As of now the United States currently has 45 states that allow the open carry of guns in public,
however there are still rules and regulations to come with the law. Florida not being included into
those 45 states, has an estimated 1.4 million concealed weapons permits meaning they are legal able to
possess a handgun that is stored away and not visible to others. Well if you allow all of those permit
holders to just walk around in the clear day with a gun, there s going to be a higher risk factor of
accidental shootings or other related issues due specifically to the simple access to a weapon. On the
other side of the accidental issues that can occur, you may be in a situation where quick access or even
having one see the gun, can stop and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some believe that concealed handguns will increase the possibilities of an argument becoming more
lethal, and that our society will be safer if we have fewer guns on our street instead of more. However,
most responsible adults respectfully follow the laws and tend to not misuse their handguns, or rifles.
The belief is public safety should be handled by professionally, trained and qualified police officers,
not citizens who hold little or possibly no experience training. Well, with responsible armed citizens
on our streets, it gives us another form of safety because one will be able to protect the public rather
than rely on the police force. Police are not always able to be at the scene in time to stop crimes from
happening, according to the Self defense Mind Body Spirit , the average police response time is an
estimated 10 12 minutes. Citizens who are trained properly and at the scene of the crime will be able
to go into action quicker and possibly save lives depending on the type of chaos. Nonetheless,
Between May 2007 and Mar. 11, 2014, there was a reported 622 citizens killed, along with 14 law
enforcement officers nationally by citizens who have legally been permitted to carry a concealed
handgun. Another issue with open carry is that a police officer responding to a crime may not

Aboriginal People In Australia
Aboriginal people have lived in this land for approximately 60000 years , but there are studies that
suggests there could have been aboriginal people in Australia for up to 120000 years. By the time the
British arrived in Australia in 1788 there were approximately 260 different aboriginal groups speaking
around 500 different dialects. Aboriginals lived a semi nomadic life, moving around an area according
to the seasons, and because of this, material things weren t too important for them, at least not as much
as family, relationships, community and spirituality. According to their beliefs, land has a very
important connection with their ancestors. Torres Strait Islander lived in the islands off Queensland,

Gun Violence-Personal Narrative
I lolled around still thinking about the decision I had made. The vicissitudes were just piling up, on
after another. The only things I heard were buildings crumble, guns being fired, and bombs dropping. I
missed the sound of my car starting, I missed the sound of the music playing, but most of all, I missed
the sound of my children laughing and playing. The kind of chastisement I was living through was just
unbearable and I was ready to leave. No one was stabbing me, no one was shooting me, just thinking
about what I have lost is the most painful thing. I heard gunshots getting closer. I needed to leave.
I looked around the brick house. Yellowed bricks, huge cracks, sand all over the place, but it was still

The Mayan Civilization And The Maya Empire
The Mayan civilization or the Maya Empire, centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now
Guatemala, reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. The Maya
excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar making and mathematics, and left behind
an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork. Most of the great stone cities
of the Maya were abandoned by A.D. 900. The Maya civilization was one of the most dominant
indigenous societies of Mesoamerica. Unlike other scattered indigenous populations of Mesoamerica,
the Maya were centered in one geographical block covering all of the Yucatan Peninsula and modern
day Guatemala; Belize and parts of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas; and the western part
of Honduras and El Salvador. This concentration showed that the Maya remained relatively secure
from invasion by other Mesoamerican peoples.
Within that expanse, the Maya lived in three separate sub areas with distinct environmental and
cultural differences: the northern Maya lowlands on the Yucatan Peninsula; the southern lowlands in
the Peten district of northern Guatemala and adjacent portions of Mexico, Belize and western
Honduras; and the southern Maya highlands, in the mountainous region of southern Guatemala. The
earliest Maya settlements date to around 1800 B.C., or the beginning of what is called the Preclassic
or Formative Period. The Middle Preclassic Period also saw the rise of the first major

Criticism Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby written by F.Scott Fitzgerald illustrates a picture of the American Society during the
1920 s. The 1920 s were a time of parties, drinking and having fun. Many had dreamed of becoming
rich and being part of the upper class. Although many wished to be part the upper class it was thought
to impossible as almost all of the upper class members in were born into it. In the Great Gatsby
Fitzgerald criticizes the American Dream by creating characters of all classes such as those from new
money, old money, and the working class who all fail to gain the freedom and happiness of the
American Dream. The old American Dream allowed before corruption allowed you to gain wealth,
power, and high status through hard work, and dedication. However, since time changes, so do values.
The American Dream had altered to materialistic aspects. These materialistic possession determine
how successful you are ,and shows it has rooted into the society. Fitzgerald shows this by showing us
the locations of where old money , and where new money live. Residents who live in West Egg are the
people who are referred to as new money as they usually have recently acquired their wealth , and are
lacking a social position. East Egg is home to those called old money who have posses wealth that has
been inherited through generations. Fitzgerald talks about how people from East Egg tend to have
more rights and respect than those who come from West Egg.

Meanwhile that has always been my interest; I decided to join an ROP program involving the Medical

people that Helped me out throughout the course and gave me great advice. Although joining that
program was at first something I felt like I needed to do just to get volunteering hours not because I
actually wanted to be in it, I ended up loving it and it convinced me that that is what I wanted to do, be
able to help the people in need of assistance and not only physically but also mentally because as a
nurse not only is it required to be there for someone physically but also mentally and sometimes that is
all they need someone that can listen to them. I feel like that is what a great nurse would do, be there
for their patient not only physically but emotionally. I can honestly say that being in that program was
my greatest accomplishment and best experience yet. Working in a hospital or in a clinic is something
I would like to see myself doing in the near future because it describes me as the person I am and want

The Slippery Slope Of Euthanasia
The slippery slope argument has been ongoing in the euthanasia debate. The slippery slope refers to
the belief that legalizing voluntary euthanasia and physician assisted suicide will lead to undesirable
outcomes. Many speculate that the legalization of involuntary euthanasia will lead to the legalization
of murder. Since euthanasia is legalized in the Netherlands, some argue that it has caused a slippery
slope. Now, people believe legalizing euthanasia in the United States will also cause a slippery slope.
Although this may be true, there is not sufficient evidence to support this argument as the rates of
euthanasia have dropped in the Netherlands since it has been legalized. Doctors try to encourage
patients to undergo hospice or other types of care before resorting to euthanasia. Under strict
guidelines, euthanasia can be controlled so it can benefit patients without being abused and causing a
slippery slope.
For euthanasia to be effective when legalized, restrictions need to be applied. All of the states that
have legalized physician assisted suicide have strict controls over who is eligible for it. A patient must
be at least 18 years of age, have six or less months to live, have requested for euthanasia two times at
least 15 days apart with the addition of a witness and written request, be a resident of the state, and be
capable of making own decisions (ProCon.org 1). These strict requirements allow euthanasia to be
abused less, while still benefiting those who are

How The Media Regulate Agents
What is the Landscape Currently?
Now that an analysis has been constructed to compare the media regulating agents, a second analysis
must be molded in order to recognize the current media landscape. This needs to be established in
order to bring justification to any policy changes at the government or industrial levels. If the common
child s media landscape reflexes the sociocultural environment that is desired, then no policy change

question now rises on what type of sociocultural environment is desired. While this can be highly

With that being said, it is still possible to create a sociocultural goal to act as a standard to compare
with media policies. Many of these standards are already incorporated into the language of American
policies. For example, violence, sexual, profane, and dangerous substance contents are used as a
standard in most of the industries regulatory systems. Typically these standards are a reflection of
risky or illegal behavior that could be modeled by the audience. For the purpose of this article, a look
at two of these common standards will be evaluated in two parts. First, an evaluation of the media

second it s prevalence in the current media landscape will be mentioned. For the sake of relevance
towards the legality of the situation, this article will look at the content of violent and sexual content in

How to Get Away with Murder has a multitude of elements that come into play throughout the series.
The series follows a group of law students being mentored by Annalise Keating, a prominent defense
attorney. The group deal with multiple deaths, usually caused by them, by using anything ranging
from their knowledge of the law to hired hitmen to get their way. The repeated theme in the series
exposes the harsh reality of how the local government and the people within are corrupt. A
conscienceless society is a major concept that shapes each character s narcissistic frame of mind
where they will do anything to achieve their own personal goals. Even with all the murders and deceit,

staff was bribed to forge false medical documents. This just goes to show corruption can transcend the

become desensitized by being unsympathetic toward the shooting they were involved in. They even go
as far as plotting to kill the victim after finding out he is still alive. The students only show concern for
themselves and the people within their group. Oliver Hampton is the only character to openly express
sympathy for the victims. He seems to be a personified version of the other characters conscience.
Early in the series he is not as prevalent because the students have not been introduced to their life of

more of a constant figure to add more empathy. Oliver s constant reminder of how the group s actions

Critique #1
Rimer s A Lost Moment Recaptured (2000) provides readers with stories of women s lives who have
returned to college through Smith College s Ada Comstock Scholars Program. These stories intertwine
with evidence supporting the implied claim; the typical college student is no longer the 18 to 20 year
old. Providing intimate details about the lives of these diverse women, Rimer leaves the reader
admiring their triumph over gendered expectations of generations past by going back to college.
Rimer hooks the reader immediately in the opening paragraph by describing a transforming moment
in an older woman s life. The woman was leaving her life and beginning anew; she was going back to
college. The women in Rimer s essay range in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rimer advocates that older women were faced with negative attitudes of previous generations
concerning the necessity of college attendance. This partnered with today s flexible opportunities

claim: The typical college student is no longer 18 to 20 years old.
Critique #2
Mosher s Where Have All the Heroes Gone? (1998) questions the role sports athletes play in today s
society. Mosher takes the reader through the history of sport and its evolution in the United States.
This lays the foundation to his evaluation that society should not expect someone to possess the
characteristics of a hero simply because they are a sports athlete.
Mosher attempts to draw the reader in to the essay by starting off with quotes from top box office
movies The Natural and Bull Durham. Mosher assumes the readers have seen these movies about
fictional sports heroes and their flaws; he is writing to his audience, the sports fan. He goes on to
highlight poor character traits of sports celebrities by detailing some disturbing incidents they were
involved in. Mosher assumes the reader is aware of the factuality of these instances; there is no
supporting evidence.
The phrase celebrity is not fame (para.6) is awkward. According to the Merriam Webster

Nazi Germany And Its Detrimental Effects On The Social...
When looking into the history of Germany and determining what led to the startling rise in Nazism in
Germany and its detrimental effects on the social outcasts in Europe, it can be easy to deduce that the
Nazi regime was one where Hitler walked in with his officials and took office by force. The truth is
that, while the Nazi party is responsible for the atrocities that occurred before and during WWII, they
would have not gotten far if it hadn t been for the cooperation of the German people themselves. Life
in the Third Reich provides proof through voting, youth programs and village life that the Nazi party
rose into power with German support. In Village Life in Nazi Germany, essayist Gerhard Wilke
discusses the rise of Nazism in the small village of Korle, discussing how with the rapid political
changes in Germany from an empire to a democratic nation also affected the power balances of small
villages. Despite the efforts of the older generations to keep some sort of semblance of the old
traditions, it was their children who wanted change and found themselves attracted to Nazism and
formed the first local branch of the party in 1928. The reason for this, Wilke says is that they wanted
radical solutions to three existential and ideological problems: the survival of their generation as
independent farmer, the preservation of their political dominance, and the suppression of their enemies
(The Jews and the working class). And the youth of villages came together in

In 1998, the first websites to download free music appeared, thus making it possible for users to share
mp3 files between one another online. These free sites caused CD sales to plummet 72% from 2000 to

mission to let people listen to music they want, when they want and where they want. Spotify is
different from the other sites like Napster and Limewire by giving customers legal access to a library
of over 30 million pieces of music. Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, the men behind Spotify, sought
to find a way to give the public unlimited access to an exhaustive catalogue of songs, stored on servers
and available online. Therefore, Spotify encourages people to abandon pirating by giving the public
the ability for Internet users to get unrestricted access to music online, without breaking the law.
Spotify offers two types of memberships: free and paid premium. The free users are able to listen on a
phone, tablet, or computer with advertisements for a few minutes every hour. While the premium user
pays $10.00 per month to listen without advertisements, unlimited skips, and the ability to listen

The workplace is a delicate environment filled with different personalities types. These differing needs

The United States Department of Labor (DOL) has a mission to protect the welfare of wage earners,
job seekers, and retirees. They also improve working conditions and ensure work related benefits and
rights. The DOL has many laws and reregulation s protecting workers that range from the Fair Labor
Standards Act, which sets standards for wages and overtime pay, to the Occupational Safety and
Health Act, which focuses on workplace safety and health. With the wide range that the DOL has
employees can feel that they have standards in place to ensure fair pay, fair treatment, and a safe

  • 2. The Four Basic Principles Of Design The four basic principles of design will be incorporated into my journal cover project in order to make my designs visually stimulating and organized. During the designing process, the principle of proximity will help me group together images and words that are closely associated with one another, so it will be clear to viewers which items are related to one another, and those that are not. Williams s explanation of alignment rules will help ensure that words and images are not randomly thrown on the cover, and will also remind me to commit to one type of alignment, unless it becomes necessary for me to use more than one. I will utilize the principle of repetition in order to make my main ideas distinct; a conscientious effort will be made to go beyond my usual use of repetition through the use of different font styles, headings, images, etc. The principle of contrast will help my designs become more visually appealing and will allow me to be more creative with my color schemes. After I have completed my two illustrations, the four principles will also serve as a final checklist, to ensure that my designs clearly project the theme of The Future of Technical Communication, and are easily understandable. My first journal cover will feature two images diagonally placed from one another, with blurred text to the sides of each. I decided to include two different sections of text because although it all contributes to the general theme, the text is separated by association; by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Gregor Mendel s Fruit Flies Essay Gregor Mendel s Fruit Flies Introduction From simple heredity experiments with garden peas, to cloning sheep, the field of genetics has come a long way. Now we are closer to mapping out the human genetic map due to advances in technology, and years and years of research. Perhaps the most influential and groundbreaking scientist, Gregor Mendel, he was responsible to provide a path to where genetics is now today with his experiments of garden peas. In lab, fruit flies were crossed to observe inheritance patterns in their offspring. The motivation for this was to further understand how genes and characteristics are inherited. To use fruit flies would be much more effective and easier because of a couple of reasons. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The F1?s were then observed and then crossed to form the F2 generation. Genetic Hypothesis The F1 generation hypothesis is that with the Line A, B cross, the F1 for our group will be expected to be heterozygous dominant (VvBb) at both loci. This is because of the cross of Line A, which was consisting of Males with the genotype of vvBB, and of line B that were females with the genotype VVbb. As far as the F2 generations go, the phenotypes are expected to have a 9:3:3:1 ratio. There should be 9 brown, normal fruit flies, and 3 of each the brown, vestigial fly and the white, long fly. Finally, there is expected to be only one white, vestigial fly that possesses homozygous recessive alleles in both loci. There is a chance that there may be different outcomes to the F2 generation due to the possibility that the Line A and the Line B generation were not all homozygous dominant in wing type for females and eye color in males. Such a genotype in the males, vvBb, and such in females, Vvbb, may lead to a different ratio in the F2 offspring. Methods In the lab section, we observed two vials containing the Line A and B species. In order for us to further examine the flies, we ?knocked out? the flies with a chemical anesthetic known as Fly Nap. Placing the wand covered in Fly Nap into the vial, we ?knocked out? the flies. We then spilled the flies onto a piece of paper and examined them under a light microscope. What were examined were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Essay about Mobey Dick Herman Melville s Moby Dick is a book which can be read as a general metaphor for the battle between the evil powers of the Devil versus the divine powers of God and Jesus, both try to obtain the souls of mankind in order to assist in each other s destruction. In this metaphor, the Devil is shown through the person of Captain Ahab, God becomes nature, Jesus is seen as the White Whale, and the representation of mankind is the crew. The voyage of the Pequod, therefore, is a representation of a similar voyage of mankind on earth, until the death of Jesus, during the whole thing the influences of these three supernatural forces are connected. The wind that made great bellied sails, and rushed the vessel on by arms invisible as irresistible; this seemed the symbol of that unseen agency which so enslaved them to the race, quot; (p.606) Relating to the metaphor, this passage can be viewed as giving the possibility of God as symbolized through the medium of nature in Moby Dick. The quot;wind , thought about in this sense, is an quot;unseen agency quot; of the motivation of God, which leads men s souls to the right paths. However, it is not a representational term found just in Melville s book. This quot;wind quot; appears as an indication of God in the opening lines of the book of Genesis, and can also represented when God breathes life into man. Another similarity between the Biblical representation of God and this passage is shown through the thought of arms. • 7. Social Stigma Of Mental Illness behavior is seen as threatening, society results to punishing them or avoiding them (Hinshaw, 2007, p. 7). An example of this is that each year in the United States between 5 and 6 million individuals with mental disorders lose, fail to seek, or cannot find employment as a consequence of their mental illness (Hinshaw, 2007, p. 124). Causes and Impact of Social Stigma How society responds to mental illnesses is mainly influenced by the amount of knowledge they have regarding mental disorders (Hinshaw, 2007, p. 7). Thus the way in which mental disorders is defined has major implications for social responses (Hinshaw, 2007, p. 7). Stutzman provides insight on a different way to define mental illnesses because, like Hinshaw, she does not find that behavior that is deviant from statistical and societal norms necessarily means someone is mentally ill (personal communication, May 25, 2017). Instead in the field of psychology and psychiatry, mental illnesses is also defined as behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that cause distress and impairment in someone s life (K. Stutzman, personal communication, May 25, 2017). Instead of being a deviance of social and statistical norms, mental illness is more a reflection of impaired functioning in the realm of social, occupational, and personal issues (K. Stutzman, personal communication, May 25, 2017). Efforts have been made to shift the model of mental illnesses from a dichotomy to view mental illnesses in more shades of grey (K. Stutzman, personal communication, May 25, 2017). The media also greatly impacts the social stigma of mental illnesses (Corrigan Watson, 2002, p. 17; Davey, 2013; Friedman, 2014). The mentally ill are often negatively portrayed in movies and the news (Corrigan Watson, 2002, p. 17; Davey, 2013; Friedman, 2014). • 8. The Rise Of The Italian Renaissance The Italian Renaissance, in contrast to the conservative attitude of the Middle Ages, introduced a society dominated by a secular, humanistic spirit. One of the most historically significant events of the Renaissance was the Reformation. Some people argue that the Reformation was a rejection the secular spirit of the Italian Renaissance. Others assert that the Reformation was an embracement of these secular ideas. However as with many questions, this issue cannot be given a definite answer. The events of sixteenth century Europe shows that the Reformation rejected secular ideas in some ways and embraced them in others. Martin Luther defied the Catholic Church and formed his own ideas on salvation, embracing secularism. In England, Henry VIII would reject Catholic authority, thereby accepting the secular spirit. However, he also rejected secularism by continuing to uphold traditional Catholic theology. Edward VI and Mary I would both establish national religion, of which there was no questioning, and reject the secular spirit. Elizabeth I also established a national religion, but her more conservative religious policies reflected her embracement of secular ideas. On the other hand, John Calvin created a religious sect that was dedicated to ardent religious devotion and righteousness, thereby rejecting secularism. Thus, the Reformation both rejected and embraced the secular spirit of the Italian Renaissance. In order to effectively analyze the Reformation in relation the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of recalling text when it is heard as a song, rather than just spoken. The idea behind this comes from the role in memory representations. Hemingway also blends in symbolism into his writing with using elephants and the actions of drinking that hold together the overall theme of the story. • 27. The Slippery Slope Of Euthanasia The slippery slope argument has been ongoing in the euthanasia debate. The slippery slope refers to the belief that legalizing voluntary euthanasia and physician assisted suicide will lead to undesirable outcomes. Many speculate that the legalization of involuntary euthanasia will lead to the legalization of murder. Since euthanasia is legalized in the Netherlands, some argue that it has caused a slippery slope. Now, people believe legalizing euthanasia in the United States will also cause a slippery slope. Although this may be true, there is not sufficient evidence to support this argument as the rates of euthanasia have dropped in the Netherlands since it has been legalized. Doctors try to encourage patients to undergo hospice or other types of care before resorting to euthanasia. Under strict guidelines, euthanasia can be controlled so it can benefit patients without being abused and causing a slippery slope. For euthanasia to be effective when legalized, restrictions need to be applied. All of the states that have legalized physician assisted suicide have strict controls over who is eligible for it. A patient must be at least 18 years of age, have six or less months to live, have requested for euthanasia two times at least 15 days apart with the addition of a witness and written request, be a resident of the state, and be capable of making own decisions (ProCon.org 1). (1998) questions the role sports athletes play in today s society. Mosher takes the reader through the history of sport and its evolution in the United States. This lays the foundation to his evaluation that society should not expect someone to possess the characteristics of a hero simply because they are a sports athlete. Mosher attempts to draw the reader in to the essay by starting off with quotes from top box office movies The Natural and Bull Durham. Mosher assumes the readers have seen these movies about fictional sports heroes and their flaws; he is writing to his audience, the sports fan. He goes on to highlight poor character traits of sports celebrities by detailing some disturbing incidents they were involved in. • 34. Nazi Germany And Its Detrimental Effects On The Social... When looking into the history of Germany and determining what led to the startling rise in Nazism in Germany and its detrimental effects on the social outcasts in Europe, it can be easy to deduce that the Nazi regime was one where Hitler walked in with his officials and took office by force. The truth is that, while the Nazi party is responsible for the atrocities that occurred before and during WWII, they would have not gotten far if it hadn t been for the cooperation of the German people themselves. Life in the Third Reich provides proof through voting, youth programs and village life that the Nazi party rose into power with German support. In Village Life in Nazi Germany, essayist Gerhard Wilke discusses the rise of Nazism in the small village of Korle, discussing how with the rapid political changes in Germany from an empire to a democratic nation also affected the power balances of small villages. Despite the efforts of the older generations to keep some sort of semblance of the old traditions, it was their children who wanted change and found themselves attracted to Nazism and formed the first local branch of the party in 1928. The reason for this, Wilke says is that they wanted radical solutions to three existential and ideological problems: the survival of their generation as independent farmer, the preservation of their political dominance, and the suppression of their enemies (The Jews and the working class).
