Kia Ora, Talofa and Welcome to Week 1 : Term 3
Hopefully everyone has had a great rest and that you haven’t had too many bugs. Great to also
see that there have been very few late arrivals during the first week - well done:)
Curriculua Focus this term: Technology - students developing processes to meet a need. The
need being, developing a device to explore a planet of their choice. This hopefully will bring in the
need for electrical circuits and the use use of materials appropriate for their planet. Watch out for
the request material from home, ie boxes, old wheels, anything really that will help them make
their device. In the second half of the term, students will be exploring Art Around the World - look-
ing and learning about a specific artist and how they made their living. At some point in the term,
you will be invited to buy the works students have created.
READING TOGETHER:
Staff are offering a second opportunity for this programme in Term 3. Some parent comments
from the last initial workshops were:
“We learnt how to wait and give time to our children when they are reading.”
“I, as a parent, gained so much confidence to know that I can help my child.”
“I saw reading from a child’s point of view.”
“I learnt how to prompt my child when they don’t know a word.”

TERM 3 EVENTS:
Kapa Haka - practices have commenced for Polyfest. The students, as part of Maori Language
Learning, have helped create a cloak that celebrates who they are. They have been painting
symbols that represent their culture and Mrs Ferris and I will sew the cloak up.
The PTA have set aside money to help pay for Kapa Haka uniforms - and, as a school, we want
your thoughts on what the Kapa Haka uniform should look like. During Term 3 we will be seeking
your thoughts.
ILT Sing Out - Miss Harris and the Choir have started their practices for this event - so book the
performance date into your diary: Tuesday, 8 September, Venue: Civic Theatre - information on
ticket sales will come out soon.
Moffett Cup - information included in the newsletter for this event, but please diary this date if
your child is involved - Friday, 7 August - Venue Tokanui School or Rugby Domain.
Blog Ninjas
At the end of last term we advised that we were going to be creating music with Mark (the ILT
Facilitator), however, we have decided to change this focus to develop students (and teachers)
skills in blog usage. Mark will be working with teachers on the 4th of August and students for the
next 5 weeks after this.

2. POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PB4L)
Information for Parents and Caregivers - provided
from the Ministry Of Education information sheet.
This newsletter:
Staff have introduced two strategies to reinforce
positive behaviours across the whole school. 1)
For returning playground equipment after the bell
rings before school, after play and after lunch. If
a student returns any play equipment they re-
ceive 20 points for their house.
2) Staff on duty will also be handing out tokens
(again, worth 20 points) to students who are
showing respect through this terms focus: which
for week 1 is using their manners by being coop-
erative, being helpful and sharing.
