As the end of the year approaches we have a small number of staff who are moving on to other employment
both in the UK and across the world. I am sure you will join me in thanking each one of them for the contribu-
tion they have made to the school during their time at BIS and for the part they have played in our children's

Our transition arrangements for all children continue to proceed as planned in preparation for the forthcoming
academic year.
Amidst all of the energy within AP1, it was great to welcome back to school our children that attended the
Year 6 residential trip to Malaysia this week and also say ā€˜bon voyageā€™ to the remaining four Year 6 classes for
their trip to the jungles of Earth Camp. To view regular updates of this weekā€™s trip, visit the BIS HUB. In ad-
dition, pictures can be viewed by visiting the AP1 Residential Blog. Iā€™m looking forward to hearing even more
stories of adventure, water rafting and chemical toilets on Monday!
Thank you to all of the parents that attended the ā€˜Moving Onā€™ Workshop on Thursday. It is very important that
we help families to prepare for life not only when they first arrive at BIS but also when they plan to leave not
only our school but often the county too. The full presentation can be found by clicking here and you may be
interested to read more about the concept of the Third Culture Kid (TCK), by accessing the following blog that
has been set up by Ruth E. Van Reken and Paulette M. Bethel. I hope that you find this both a relevant and
interesting read.
Have a great weekend and I hope you enjoy reading through the articles of this weekā€™s Friday newsletter.
After another very busy week at AP1, I can now confirm that all of the class lists for the
academic year 2015/16 have been completed. As always, this is an extremely complicated
process, however I feel that we have managed to create both a balance and structure that
will work to facilitate great learning experiences, both social and academic as the children
return to school in August for the new year. These lists, containing both the allocation of
the class teacher and class name, will be sent to you with your childā€™s school report next
Friday 12th June. Your support and integrity within this process is very much appreciat-
ed.
Linked to the finalisation of the class lists, I would like to inform you of the staffing chang-
es at AP1 next year, announcing both the teachers that are leaving BIS and the ones that
will be new to our school next year:

Schedule of School Fees 2015 - 2016
Dear Parents
The Schedule of Fees for the Academic Year 2015 ā€“ 2016 has now been published. A copy can be viewed and
downloaded from the school web site by following this link:
http://www.bisvietnam.com/admissions/admission-information/fees/
You will note that compared to last year there has been an average increase in the school Tuition Fees of
6.1%, which is the lowest average fee increase for the school in seven years.
We have kept the fee increase to the minimum that will allow us to maintain the same high quality of educa-
tional provision in a growing school. We remain convinced that we represent good value for money and are
comparable with similar schools in Vietnam and elsewhere in the region.
Shaun Williams
CEO and Principal

Year 2 - Class 2I Learns About Capacity
Mr Grahamā€™s class has been learning about capacity this week. Itā€™s really good fun when learning about capaci-
ty to use measuring cylinders and funnels correctly and we have become quite good at estimating the capacity
of containers. We also didnā€™t spill any water ā€“ well, not much!

Year 4 - Gardeners
One of Year 4ā€™s community projects this year has been to look after the AP1 garden and the children have
shown themselves to be quite green-fingered. They initially weeded the garden and added new soil to the vari-
ous plots to prepare them for planting. The children then planted an array of fruit, vegetables and herbs such
as pineapples, tomatoes and coriander.
Since then, a few gardeners from each Year 4 class have tended the garden on a weekly basis, watering the
plants and ridding the garden of weeds. We are hoping that before the end of term, we will be able to use some
of the produce that the children have grown in our Golden Time cooking, so that the children can enjoy some of
the spoils of their own labour and hard-work. Take a look at some of the children in action in the pictures be-
low.

EAL Department - Skills Improvement
In year 6, EAL students have been improving their speaking and listening skills. They have used a range of
strategies to help them pick out useful information when listening to other people. They have also been prac-
tising speaking clearly and using complete sentences.
Other Year 6 students have enjoyed reading Mrs Cooney is a Looney. Itā€™s a very funny book with jokes that use
puns. A pun is a joke that uses words that sound similar with some funny results. Here is one example from
Sakura and Jun Han in 6N.
(Children playing Scrabble)
A: Have you got a c?
B: I donā€™t have enough letters to make sea.
C: I can see a c.
A: Where is the c?
B: Itā€™s by the beach!
C: Thereā€™s no c in sea silly!
Students in Year 5 have been focussing on their writing skills recently by using thesauruses to find more varied
vocabulary and using more advanced connectives to improve their sentences. They have been playing dice
games to help them try out these different skills.

PE Department - BIS Aquathlon 2015
On Saturday 13th June AP1 will host its 8th annual Aquathlon. It will take the same format as last year
with a combined AP1 & TX event at the An Phu Primary Campus.
An Aquathlon is a fun and fast-growing sport that combines both running and swimming.
The swimming will take place in the An Phu Primary pool and the run will take place on the big field. The race
briefing will take place at 6.45am and the first race will begin at 7.00am.
Boys and girls will set off at different times (in most cases) and will not race against each other. The distances
for each age group are:
You will require a swimming costume, goggles, a hat if you wish, towel and suitable clothes/trainers to run in
(including a t-shirt which must be worn during the run!). A small snack and refreshment is also recom-
mended for after the event. Food will be available to purchase on the day.
In addition, there will be a parentā€™s race taking place at AP2 at approximately 8.00am on Saturday 6th June;
Parents can enter as an individual or as part of a team with one running and the other swimming. If you would
like to take part please complete the reply ā€˜for parentsā€™ and either send directly to Phil Drake at AP2 or you
can hand this into the AP1 PE office and we will pass it on.

  • 2. From The Headteacher - Mr Simon Higham Issue 34/Page 2 Staffing Changes at AP1 for 2015/2016 As the end of the year approaches we have a small number of staff who are moving on to other employment both in the UK and across the world. I am sure you will join me in thanking each one of them for the contribu- tion they have made to the school during their time at BIS and for the part they have played in our children's education. We wish them well for the next stage in their careers and beyond. Departing Teaching Staff Heather Loake (F1) Clair Draper (F2 and Assistant Head EYFS) Sarah Horton (Y2) Ruth Buckley (Y3) Sahita Balzer (Y6) Victoria Edwards (Y6 and MP3 Leader) Lara Wilkinson (PE) Chris Pemble (PE Leader) Sophie Tighzer (MFL Leader) An Gulinck (MFL) Luke Turner (EAL) Grace Collantes (EYFS/Music) Allie York Smith (EAL) Emma Morris (Community Service) I would like to welcome the following new staff to BIS for the academic year 2015/16 who join us from various parts of the globe. New Teaching Staff Maria Shooter (F2) Sarah Curran (F2 and Assistant Head EYFS) Naomi Skinner (Y3) Eileen Winfield-Chislett (Y4) Chloe Martin (Y4) Greg Wilde (Y6) Simon Grimshaw (PE Leader) Lindsey Shuttleworth (PE teacher) Ellie Clay (EAL) Fiorella Lambert (MFL) Phil Holland (EAL) Alice Ragouzaridis-Clarke (MFL Leader) Chris Rolls (EAL) Our transition arrangements for all children continue to proceed as planned in preparation for the forthcoming academic year. Amidst all of the energy within AP1, it was great to welcome back to school our children that attended the Year 6 residential trip to Malaysia this week and also say ā€˜bon voyageā€™ to the remaining four Year 6 classes for their trip to the jungles of Earth Camp. To view regular updates of this weekā€™s trip, visit the BIS HUB. In ad- dition, pictures can be viewed by visiting the AP1 Residential Blog. Iā€™m looking forward to hearing even more stories of adventure, water rafting and chemical toilets on Monday! Thank you to all of the parents that attended the ā€˜Moving Onā€™ Workshop on Thursday. It is very important that we help families to prepare for life not only when they first arrive at BIS but also when they plan to leave not only our school but often the county too. The full presentation can be found by clicking here and you may be interested to read more about the concept of the Third Culture Kid (TCK), by accessing the following blog that has been set up by Ruth E. Van Reken and Paulette M. Bethel. I hope that you find this both a relevant and interesting read. Have a great weekend and I hope you enjoy reading through the articles of this weekā€™s Friday newsletter. After another very busy week at AP1, I can now confirm that all of the class lists for the academic year 2015/16 have been completed. As always, this is an extremely complicated process, however I feel that we have managed to create both a balance and structure that will work to facilitate great learning experiences, both social and academic as the children return to school in August for the new year. These lists, containing both the allocation of the class teacher and class name, will be sent to you with your childā€™s school report next Friday 12th June. Your support and integrity within this process is very much appreciat- ed. Linked to the finalisation of the class lists, I would like to inform you of the staffing chang- es at AP1 next year, announcing both the teachers that are leaving BIS and the ones that will be new to our school next year:
  • 3. Whole School News Issue 34/Page 3 Schedule of School Fees 2015 - 2016 Dear Parents The Schedule of Fees for the Academic Year 2015 ā€“ 2016 has now been published. A copy can be viewed and downloaded from the school web site by following this link: http://www.bisvietnam.com/admissions/admission-information/fees/ You will note that compared to last year there has been an average increase in the school Tuition Fees of 6.1%, which is the lowest average fee increase for the school in seven years. We have kept the fee increase to the minimum that will allow us to maintain the same high quality of educa- tional provision in a growing school. We remain convinced that we represent good value for money and are comparable with similar schools in Vietnam and elsewhere in the region. Shaun Williams CEO and Principal JOB VACANCIES The school has a number of vacant jobs which may suit some of our parents. All of the posts are based at the An Phu Secondary Campus ICT Manager Community Service Project Manager Online Marketing Officer Learning Support Assistant Further details for each post are available on the school website at http://www.bisvietnam.com/careers/ teaching-at-bis/recruitment/ If you wish to be considered for one or more of these jobs please email a letter of application, your CV, a recent professional photograph and the contact details for two referees to recruitment@bisvietnam.com putting the title of the job in the subject box of your email. Alternatively, you can deliver an application by hand to one of the school campus offices. Fluency in English is essential. Closing date is 12.00 noon Wednesday 10 June 2015
  • 4. Issue 34/Page 4 Year 2 - Class 2I Learns About Capacity Mr Grahamā€™s class has been learning about capacity this week. Itā€™s really good fun when learning about capaci- ty to use measuring cylinders and funnels correctly and we have become quite good at estimating the capacity of containers. We also didnā€™t spill any water ā€“ well, not much! Mr Graham Tait Year 2 Teacher and Science Leader
  • 5. Issue 34/Page 5 Year 4 - Gardeners One of Year 4ā€™s community projects this year has been to look after the AP1 garden and the children have shown themselves to be quite green-fingered. They initially weeded the garden and added new soil to the vari- ous plots to prepare them for planting. The children then planted an array of fruit, vegetables and herbs such as pineapples, tomatoes and coriander. Since then, a few gardeners from each Year 4 class have tended the garden on a weekly basis, watering the plants and ridding the garden of weeds. We are hoping that before the end of term, we will be able to use some of the produce that the children have grown in our Golden Time cooking, so that the children can enjoy some of the spoils of their own labour and hard-work. Take a look at some of the children in action in the pictures be- low. Ms Melanie Wagstaff Year 4 Teacher
  • 6. Issue 34/Page 6 EAL Department - Skills Improvement In year 6, EAL students have been improving their speaking and listening skills. They have used a range of strategies to help them pick out useful information when listening to other people. They have also been prac- tising speaking clearly and using complete sentences. Other Year 6 students have enjoyed reading Mrs Cooney is a Looney. Itā€™s a very funny book with jokes that use puns. A pun is a joke that uses words that sound similar with some funny results. Here is one example from Sakura and Jun Han in 6N. (Children playing Scrabble) A: Have you got a c? B: I donā€™t have enough letters to make sea. C: I can see a c. A: Where is the c? B: Itā€™s by the beach! C: Thereā€™s no c in sea silly! Students in Year 5 have been focussing on their writing skills recently by using thesauruses to find more varied vocabulary and using more advanced connectives to improve their sentences. They have been playing dice games to help them try out these different skills. Ms Allie York-Smith Ms Shaheena Pall EAL Teacher EAL Leader
  • 7. Issue 34/Page 7 PE Department - MPF and MP1 Swimming OPEN SWIMMING Monday 8th June to Friday 12th June Dear Parents, We would like to invite you to come and watch your childā€™s usual swimming lesson. The children have been working hard over the year, developing their water confidence and skills. Please check their timetable to see when their swimming lesson is normally. We look forward to seeing you by the pool next week
  • 8. Issue 34/Page 8 PE Department - BIS Aquathlon 2015 On Saturday 13th June AP1 will host its 8th annual Aquathlon. It will take the same format as last year with a combined AP1 & TX event at the An Phu Primary Campus. An Aquathlon is a fun and fast-growing sport that combines both running and swimming. The swimming will take place in the An Phu Primary pool and the run will take place on the big field. The race briefing will take place at 6.45am and the first race will begin at 7.00am. Boys and girls will set off at different times (in most cases) and will not race against each other. In addition, there will be a parentā€™s race taking place at AP2 at approximately 8.00am on Saturday 6th June; Parents can enter as an individual or as part of a team with one running and the other swimming. If you would like to take part please complete the reply ā€˜for parentsā€™ and either send directly to Phil Drake at AP2 or you can hand this into the AP1 PE office and we will pass it on.
