opportunity to accomplish 2 of
the 3 pillars of CAS:
- Creativity
- Action
-Service
These are very important for
anyone look to pass there IB
Diploma.
It is also a place to have loads
of FUN !!
3. What were our aims?
Service Creativity
Teaching Thai children
between the ages of 8-11
English
Thai Cooking classes
Our aim on project week
was mainly Service
and Creativity:
4. Our strengths and
areas for growth:
Coming from UWCSEA
we had a good background
and knowledge to teach
English. However the challenge was the
language barrier between us and the kids so we
had develop skills in teaching, that we didn’t
originally have.
5. New challenges
Being on the other side of
the classroom was a
tremendous task that
involved extreme hard
work and dedication. It
was extremely difficult for
us to convey our message
to the children because of
a huge language barrier.
6. Planning an initiating
English Camp was completely volunteer lead and everyday
we had
to plan our lessons for the
next day. The lessons not
only involved rote
learning, but were filled
with a number of fun
activities such as singing,
dancing and games.
7. Working as a team
It was difficult to teach for
8 hours a day for a week so
we really relied on each
other to help one another
as well as using the
resources available.
Teaching is very hard, be
thankful to your teachers
8. Commitment and perseverance
After day 3 all of us had sore
throats, was sick and tired. So
getting up in the morning at 7
for a full day of school plus
activities after such as
cooking or sightseeing tested
our commitment and
perseverance.
9. Global Issues
Surin is a developing
region in Northeastern
Thailand, making it
important for the
youth to know English. The
schools in the region do not
have a well educated faculty for the purpose and therefore,
the volunteer lead English Camp helped the region
tremendously
10. Ethical We were expected
to wear shoulder
covering clothes
and pants that are
knee length.
We learned how to
put our hands
together to greet an
thai adult.
11. New Skills
We learned how to pass on
our knowledge to the younger
generation even though there
was a communication
barrier. We learned how to
make our lessons more
interesting by using games
and fun activities.
