Kia Ora, Talofa and Welcome back to Term 3 (10 Week term).
Term 3 - under the 2014 learning theme of “Keeping Safe” - this term is about looking
at how we can keep the waterways our classrooms are named after safe for the future,
ie The Kingswell Creek, Waituna Lagoon, The Oreti and Mataura Rivers and Awarua
Bay. This term has science and social science as its core for student learning. If you
have information that your child could bring to school about their water way, please feel
free to send it along - or contact the classroom teacher and share your knowledge.
Term 3 will also see our Choir continue with their practices, Kapa Haka perform at
Polyfest for the first time and of course, there is also Moffett Cup happening during
week 4.
Community Consultation: On Wednesday 30 July 2014 at 2:00pm, we would like to
invite all our Maori, Pasifika and families of our Kapa Haka Group to a pre Polyfest Per-
formance. This has a twofold purpose, 1) to provide an opportunity for our Kapa Haka
Group to perform in front of an audience before attending the Polyfest Day; and 2) to
consult with our Maori and Pasifika Community. Following the Kapa Haka performance
there will be an afternoon tea.
The Board have invited Lester Dean from the Pacific Island Community Trust and a
representative from the Waihopai Runaka to assist with the consultation. The consulta-
tion consists of three questions:
1) What is Tisbury School Doing Well for our Maori and Pasifika Students;
2) What is Tisbury School Not Doing So Well for our Maori and Pasifika Students;
3) What can Tisbury School, with your help, do to address the things we aren’t doing so
well?
The Board would really like to see as many of our Maori and Pasifika families repre-
sented - so please put this date in your diary.

2. ENCOURAGING YOUR CHILD AT HOME : WITH
WRITING:
Have pens, colouring pencils, crayons and scrap
paper available so your children can write, make
cards for parents, grandparents, friends. Get your
child to write about their favourite food or game, and
send it along to school to share with their teacher or
even Mrs Joyce.
The more you write the better you get at writing.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER:
Tisbury School’s PTA created a Cookbook a few years ago - over the holidays Mrs Joyce had
some fun making some of the wonderful recipes, and thought maybe it would be great to
share one each newsletter for Term 3:
The first: French Bread Stick Stuffing
1½ containers cream cheese 1 green pepper
100g salami 2 spring onions
3 gherkins ground black pepper
Chop up salami, gherkins, green pepper and spring onions. Mix together with cream cheese,
and black pepper, cut French stick in half, remove some bread and stuff with the filling. Wrap
in gladwrap. Slice when ready to serve. Best made day before.
GARDEN CLUB:
The staff would like to see this up and running again, and again hope there is someone out
there who could help us - even once a week during lunch time. If you are able to help, please
phone Mrs Joyce, she would love to hear from you.
To help develop the garden further, we are applying to the Invercargill Licensing Trust for help
in building a fence, bark-chip the area, and purchasing a tool box to keep our gardening tools
close by. Hopefully, we will be lucky enough to get this phase underway before the end of the
year.
BOOK FAIR: Staff appreciate that this is a long way off - however, just getting everyone pre-
pared - Tisbury School is to have a Book Fair during the week of 15 to 19 September. The
theme of the book week is “Reading with Bugs” - the staff thought that it would be a lot of fun
to have a week centered around books about bugs, and then students can have a dress-up
day on the Friday - where they can dress as their favourite Book Bug. Books will be available
to purchase during this week - more information as the term goes on about this event.
DREAMWEAVER: Again,
this year, on Friday, we
are very lucky to have Liz
Miller visit Tisbury School
sharing her story telling
magic with our students.
Ms Miller is sponsored by
the Invercargill Licensing
Trust, through the Literacy
Association, to ensure
Invercargill children
receive the experience of
a story teller.
Kapa Haka—if anyone is available to help
with practices on Wednesday’s at 12.45pm
please contact Joy Maheno
Polyfest Festival is on 26 –29 August 2014
