Tisbury School is part of the Sun-
rise Rotary Invercargill pumpkin
growing competition - part of this
competition is to have some reci-
pes using the vegetables that we
have grown and sold. If anyone
has some great recipes that use
some, or all, of: peas, cabbage,
broccoli, potatoes, marrow and
kale - please send along to school.
We will publish them in the next
few newsletters. The pumpkin
will be weighed in the next couple
of weeks. For more information,
check out The Eye, dated 26 Febru-
ary.

Kia Ora, Talofa and Welcome to the end of week 6 - (four weeks until the term break and Easter -
looking forward to some hot cross buns!!)
Well done to all our students who participated in the Southern Zone Athletics yesterday (a much
better day than Monday). The staff would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the parents who
were able to help us on the day - either on the track timing, or supporting our students at their
events. Well done to all our students - the results will be published on our blog as soon as we get
them. Any student who may qualify for Southland Primary School’s Athletics - the date is March,
28th (Saturday).
School Stationery: The staff appreciate that at the beginning of each year there is a
“commercial” sensitivity around retail outlets selling stationery and as a school we have no control
over this (nor should we), nevertheless, staff have found that some of the exercise books pur-
chased outside of the school’s box have started to fall apart and are having to be repaired.
Another factor occurring is that some of the stationery purchased does not meet the school re-
quirements, ie math books pre-ruled, books not having the same line width, which makes it harder
for students to work in. We appreciate that the school will not satisfy all parents circumstances,
however we do try to accommodate where we can. All we ask is parents talk to staff.
Complaints - I cannot emphasis enough that if parents have concerns that they should:
1. Talk to the classroom teacher.
2. Talk to the Principal.
3. Follow the complaints procedure which is found in your child’s communication book.
Cubbies - The new cubbies under the eaves are working out very well. In moving these to under
the verandah we have created more space for students to work and have one on one support with
the teacher aides uninterrupted. This has also resulted in the silly behaviour in and around the
toilet areas (ie paper on the ceiling, children throwing food and other student’s lunches in the
toilets, and general behaviour) being significantly reduced - which is a positive outcome. Oreti
Room’s hooks are in the process of being moved to the inside of the ramp to provide better pro-
tection from the weather. If you have a concerns regarding the change in cubbies, please refer to
the above complaints procedures.
Car Park - Last week parents held a school community meeting around “school parking” - there
was a good turnout and the staff shared all the concerns raised around the carpark. As a group
they have agreed to explore the one factor that would hinder any other considerations and that is
speed. I will ask the organisers to keep you informed of their explorations through our school
newsletter.
Garden Club - Once again thanks to Diane and Anita for taking over the garden club and organis-
ing the harvesting and sale of some produce. The sale raised $70.00 which will go towards pur-
chasing items for the garden - however I do know that Diane and Anita would love to have other
parents help for the garden club to be sustainable over time. At the moment they come on a
Thursday between 9:30 and 10:30am - and along with one student from each room they look after
two gardens, the vegetable patch and the garden in front of the library. It would be good to have
more helpers so please see me with your names.
Uniforms - Staff cannot emphasise enough the importance of naming all items of clothing - staff
can only check for lost items if they are named.
Head Lice - that old adage is back (I don't think it ever goes away) - nevertheless, staff are ask-
ing that all girls with long hair to be tied up - pony tails, plaits, apart from looking neat, it
just stops the hair flicking, falling and touching other children’s hair. Your help is appreci-
ated.

Our wonderful Caretaker Mr Peter Hughes not only keeps our school look-
ing great but he is a very clever man and makes lovely furniture. Here is
an example of what he does. For Sale, recycled rimu chopping boards,
coffee table/magazine rack and shelves. Contact school office if you are
interested.
Be safe - wear your vest - be seen:)
We have had some public concerns ex-
pressed to us with students riding their
bikes to school inappropiately along the
Invercargill Gorge Road highway
(100km). As a result of this we have or-
ganised Martin Lowry (School Communi-
ty Officer) to provide some training for
the children over 10 years old on
Wednesday 22 April for bike safety.

Basic Principal of
Good Parenting:
Foster your child’s
Independence
Setting limits helps
your child develop a
sense of self control.
Encouraging independ-
ence helps them devel-
op a sense of self-
direction. To be suc-
cessful in life, they
are going to need
both. Accepting that
it is normal for chil-
dren to push for au-
tonomy is absolutely
ey to effective par-
enting. Many parents
mistakenly equate
their child’s inde-
pendence with rebel-
liousness or disobedi-
ence. Children push
for independence be-
cause it is part of
human nature to want
to feel in control
rather than to feel
controlled by someone
else.
