I have been giving lectures on news writing and have had a number of presentations. This one, I worked on last month, when I was invited to speak on the same topic to Allen National High School students in Northern Samar.
This presentation contains the basics of news writing and article ideas for the news page of the school paper. Through this, I hope to help fellow school paper advisers across the Philippines and maybe even beyond borders.
Please feel free to contact me through gurugeri@yahoo.com for any journalism training you may want to invite me to. Thanks very much!
The presentation is a brief introduction to news writing in campus publications. It tackles the theory of social responsibility and advocacy in journalism.

Directions:
Each of the topics below quotes a writerās position on some issue. Choose one of the two topics assigned by the online application. In an
organized essay of about 350 words, (1) explain in your own words what the writer is saying AND (2) take a position on the writerās
argument. (Issues you might wish to address include: Do you agree or disagree totally with the writerās opinion or only to a certain
extent? Is the evidence used to support the writerās argument convincing or weak? If weak, can you offer a better argument? Can you
cite a personal experience that either supports or undermines what the writer has said?) As you write your essay, you should periodically
refer to statements in the passage you are discussing. However, everything you write should be in your own words except, perhaps, for a
phrase or two from the passage that you may wish to quote.
Only the first few lines of the essay topics will be displayed by the online application. Therefore, be certain to have this printed at test
time. Choose only one topic from the two assigned by the online Placement Test Website.
L1. In Orwellās classic novel 1984, Big Brother quells dissent and uses technology to control the minds of the populationāall for the public good.
Big Brother's government has its own language, "Newspeak," and critical thinking and intellectual dissent are punished as "thought crimes." The
corporatization of higher education has led to many colleges and universities coming to resemble the unsettling realities of Orwellās text. In response to
broad concerns over both the rising price of education and the mounting level of student debt, many universities have increasingly adopted corporate
models of institutional governance. While certainly some changes to the ways universities are run is needed, the corporate model has had unexpected
and dangerous consequences regarding the very purpose of higher education. For example, in Kansas the state Board of Regents recently voted to adopt
a new social media policy, which allows Kansas state universities to fire (tenured and untenured) employees for "improper use" of social media.
"Improper use" includes inciting violence, posting confidential information about students, or posting things that are "contrary to the best interests of the
university." In other words, the university can fire a professor or staff member who blogs, tweets, or Facebooks any criticism of the university, since the
ābest interestsā of the university are defined by the institution itself. Far from an anomaly, the Kansas policy is sadly part of a larger pattern of viewing
education as a business. Politicians and university managers, once called administrators, are systematically undermining the foundation of American
higher education, promoting the anti-intellectual ideology of higher education as job tr.

Countering Age-Related Stereotypes
Many people fear and dread the late adulthood stage of life because they believe what awaits them is ill health and cognitive decline. While that description fits some adults in later life, it certainly does not describe them all. Many older adults lead healthy, active lives and are closely connected to their families and communities. However, stereotypes related to aging are extremely prevalent in our culture and strongly influence our attitudes toward aging. Use your textbook and the Argosy University online library resources to research age-related stereotypes.

GO BACK TO TEACHING BASIC WRITING SKILLS
Lexington Herald-Leader (KY) - Monday, January 23, 2006
Author: Donna Slone
My greatest fear in grades seven through 12 in the 1960s was that my English teacher would make good on her daily threats.
"I'm going to pinch your ears off and pitch you out the window," she shrieked whenever she caught a student daydreaming or unprepared.
Irene Slusher struck fear into the hearts of every student who entered her classroom on the second floor of Jackson City School in Breathitt County.
And we all had to enter.
Mrs. Slusher taught English to everyone at the school. I was one of 18 in the 1968 graduating class.
From her, we learned the parts of speech and the rules of punctuation. We never ended a sentence with a preposition. We learned to diagram sentences, and we
memorized and recited poems. We didn't dare turn in an assignment without first editing it for gramma.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Ā
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

ā¢ Arrange your facts in a descending order,
or from the most important (or most
interesting) to the least important (or least
interesting).
ā¢ During the writing process, Always put the
news at the beginning (lead). Write the
lead making sure to play up the most
interesting or important points.
34. Steps to Writing a News Story
ā¢ Write the next paragraph or paragraphs
presenting the other highlights or
answering the questions not answered.
ā¢ Add other facts, keeping in mind their
descending order of importance.
35. The Inverted Pyramid Format
Lead: Most Important Facts
Next Most Important
Facts
Less
Important
Facts
Least Important
Information
36. Components of the
inverted pyramid format
ļPrimary or main lead ā usually a
single paragraph, it contains the
four āWsā (what, who, where,
when)
ļSecondary or support lead ā this
portion explains or complements
the main lead.
37. Components of the
inverted pyramid format
ļDetails or particulars ā to give flesh to the
story, all available facts are included here
especially those that would answer āWā
(why) and one āHā (how).
ļBackground ā Relevant past events are
recounted and incorporated in this portion
of the story. This portion may be deleted, if
space in the newspaper will not allow, but
still the story can stand.
38. Things to Remember
ā¢ One idea per sentence; if it cannot be done,
it should not exceed three sentences.
ā¢ Limiting sentence to not more than 25
words
ā¢ Arrange paragraphs in the descending
order of importance.

ā¢ Reduce difficult words to their simplest
terms.
ā¢ Choose precise words.
ā¢ Keep it simple.
ā¢ Give your source when necessary.
39. ā¢ Show, donāt tell.
ā¢ Identify all persons.
ā¢ Keep it objective; avoid editorializing.
ā¢ Have an angle; play up the dominant
points.
ā¢ Quote people.
ā¢ Avoid preaching at the end of the story.
ā¢ Be accurate and truthful.
ā¢ Watch out for errors of fact and grammar.
41. Considerations in
Writing the Lead
The lead, or opening paragraph, is the most
important part of a news story. With so many
sources of information audiences simply are
not willing to read beyond the first
paragraph (and even sentence) of a story
unless it grabs their interest. A good lead
does just that. It gives readers the most
important information in a clear, concise
and interesting manner. It also establishes
the voice and direction of an article.
42. Tips in Writing the Lead
ļ¼The lead should be a one-sentence
paragraph. The less words you use,
the more catchy your lead will be.
Ipinahayag ng Bise Presidente ngayong
hapon na pinag-usapan ng konseho ng
Lungsod ng Makati ang patungkol sa
pagtayo ng city hall ng lunsod noong
sya pa ang alkalde nito.
43. ļ¼The form of the lead sentence is
straightforward declarative sentence,
usually with the verb in simple past
tense: subject-verb-object.
The Saint Agnesā Academy grade
school department is conducting
today the annual school-based
press conference.
44. ļ¼Use the active voice rather than the
passive voice; it is more forceful.
A suspension of classes in Albay was
announced this morning by Governor
Joey Salceda due to the heavy rains
affecting most parts of the province.
Governor Joey Salceda announced today a
suspension of classes in Albay due to the
heavy rains affecting most parts of the
province.
45. ļ¼Do not forget about the time element. Tell
the readers in the lead when the news
happened.
The income classification of Goa,
Camarines Sur has jumped from second
class to first class, Mayor Antero Lim said.
The income classification of Goa,
Camarines Sur has jumped from second
class to first class, Mayor Antero Lim said on
Monday.
46. ļ¼Do not clutter up the lead with adjectives
and adverbs.
Applied physics professor Rodel General
finally passed and joined the Lord on that
gloomy Monday morning at the age of 55,
following a long, courageous battle with
cancer.
Physics professor Rodel General died of
cancer on Monday. He was 55.
47. ļ¼The lead should be simple, brief, compact,
vigorous, attractive, and should shoot
straight into the readerās attention.
Campus Director Elsie Ferrer has issued
today a circular warning the faculty
members to inhibit from PSHS National
Competitive Examination (PSHS-NCE)
review.
48. News Lead Writing Workshop
Every Monday, scholars and employees gather in
front of the admin building for the flag rites.
After the flag rites on Monday, the school principal,
Elsie Ferrer, made a very important
announcement.
It was about the security guardās report about
students going out of the campus for lunch. The
students come back to school 15 minutes late.
The announcement was that the students will no
longer be allowed to go out of the campus.
49. The family of Cristina Mendoza was grief-stricken. She was 51
years old and died of a heart attack last week. She left a
husband and four children. Because her death was so sudden
and unexpected, an autopsy had to be performed before the
funeral last Saturday. It was a big funeral, costing more than
Php50,000. More than 100 friends and relatives were in
attendance during the funeral. Today, the family received an
apologetic call from the medical examiner. Mrs. Mendozaās
body is still in the morgue. The body they buried was that of a
woman whose corpse had been unclaimed for a month. The
error was discovered after the medical examiners office
realized the month-old corpse had disappeared. Someone
probably misread an identifying tag, they said. Also, the family
never viewed the remains, they kept the casket closed
throughout the wake. A relative said, "We went through all the
pain and everything, all over the wrong body, and now we
have to go through it again."
50. Maraming mga guro sa English sa mga junior at senior high school
sa ilang private schools sa Manila ay pinagbabasa ang kanilang mga
mag-aaral ng "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."
