The article highlights the importance of public diplomacy in the era of modern communication in order to create and maintain the dominance over others.
Communication is seen as an important component of public diplomacy to know how governments interact with foreign publics. As an emerging power, China has been actively expanding its presence in the global communication landscape through public diplomacy. Western media consider it a threat in global leadership for the sole super power The United States. China's rise as an emerging power has disturbed the power distribution in the international system. The article also highlights that how public diplomacy and external communication have been a neglected area of research in Pakistan.

Violence is very attractive in films, conflicts are often built around violence, and it is a very effective mechanism used to sell films.
91 percent of Hollywood movies or television contained violence, even extreme violence. Several researchers have described an increase of violent content in movies, despite a national rating system.

Presentation on review of documentary (The Samjhauta Express)Zaibunnisa73
Â
The documentary is about a frontier railway line of 500 km which carries the cross border train between India and Pakistan named as The Samjhauta Express. This documentary also covers an emotional journey of some passengers. In start of the documentary, the narrator tells us about the conflicts between these two borders but the one thing which bond these two states together is the railway line of Samjhauta Express. The border line was drawn by British judge in 1947 and Samjhauta Express was started in 1976 after Shimla agreement. Despite all the conflicts, both countries establish this gate-way to reunite the people with their families after the partition. Samjhauta Express carries passengers twice in a week from both countries and almost 50,000 people in a year. Delhi station has special platform and security for this service. The British build Lahore railway station is also very similar to Dehli station. In Walton academy at Lahore station, staff and drivers were trained. Both railway stations provide platforms to sportspersons and give training to them for cricket and hockey and those players play for the stations.
Defending against deception (logical Reasoning)Zaibunnisa73
Â
Deception has been practiced in so many ways, and new ways are being created so fast by so many creative people, that we readers, consumers, voters, and potential converts have a tough time keeping our defenses up.
The theory talks about the relationship between minority and majority of people and how they express themselves. It proves minority people keep silent on their views on any particular subject.
A logical structure is important for any story because affective organization makes writing easier. After struggling with the lead, a professional communicator can choose from a number of structures that will help him/her organize the rest of the story.
A news program, news show, or newscast is a regularly scheduled radio or Television programme that reports current events. A news program can include live or recorded interviews by field reporters, expert opinions, opinion poll results, and occasional editorial content.
News programmes aim to provide a broader view of the dayâs news, summarizing the best stories of the day instead of the hour. Length usually ranges from 20 to 60 minutes. Items are generally longer and more detailed than those in a bulletin and more sophisticated, using actualities or film footage, stills and graphics. Some shorter stories may also be incorporated to increase the breadth of coverage. If a programme is to gain audience loyalty, it will have to establish a clear identity and have a greater balance and variety of material than a bulletin.
The social media is the most powerful tool in today's era. Everyone is used used media for specific reasons. Social media platforms also plays an important role in different political scenarios. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2. NEWS:
o News is mass media report about any event,
idea or situation that is timely, and is of
relevance to a large number of people.
Current happening, Out of ordinary and
unusual things becomes the news.
o News is timely, accurate, concise, objective
and fact-oriented.
3. Types Of News:
Hard News:
o Report about an event, personality or thing which
holds some relevance for a large number of
people.
o Straight, deadpan reporting.
o Serious occurrences.
o News that has a more urgent character.
o News values: oddity and prominence.
o Examples: political news, national emergencies,
natural disasters etc.
4. Soft News:
o Such a report that explains the meaning of
events to peopleâs lives and which almost
entertains as much as it informs.
o Also called feature.
o Flexible and tolerates analysis, and to some
o extent, judgment.
o Less immediacy
o News values: human interest and significance.
o Examples: Celebrity News etc.
5. o All news, whether soft or hard, revolves around
audience interest. The reporter though relies on
his discretion, intuition and sense of judgment to
decide whether to use the hard or soft news
approach.
o Reporting is ultimately the gathering, processing
and presenting of news and other information
that are significant and of consequence to a
defined target audience. Reporting is basic to
journalism. All media of mass communication
engage in reporting of sorts.
6. News Judgment
In news judgment, the editor is primarily
concerned with three factors;
o News Values,
o news Elements
o News Presentation.
7. 1: News Values
o News values are those attributes of news
events that make them (news events)
newsworthy, and which may give them priority
over other newsworthy stories.
o The reporter is guided by a set of values that
determine what he covers and reports.
8. ConâŠ
1: Conflict:
o News is for the most part something that looks
like quarrel, fallout that produces
disagreement, arguments, injury or damage.
Events that are disruptive of social order often
attract reporters: wars, riots, murders and
violence etc.
9. ConâŠ
2: Timeliness:
Today's newspaper is tomorrow's fish wrap
o Every news is timely or fresh, but not every
timely event is news. Timeliness deals with
the freshness of an occurrence.
10. ConâŠ
3: Proximity:
o It deals with the place where an event took
place.
o The nearer the place of occurrence of an
event (geographic proximity) to the audience
the more it is likely to either concern them or
attract their sympathy and as a result their
interest.
11. ConâŠ
Novelty/Oddity:
o A catchphrase in journalism, which is attributed to
John Bogart, has it that when a dog bites a man. it
is no news because it happens so often, but if a
man bites a dog, that is news.
o By this, Bogart means newsworthy events are
often bizarre, extraordinary or unusual. News is
always what is unusually new.
12. ConâŠ
Consequence:
o This refers to the impact of news: the extent of its effects on
people and things. News is often about something of great
importance, magnitude or outcome.
o News affects a goodly number of people or things in dire
ways. In addition to other factors that might make an event
newsworthy, there is always the consequence aspect.
o For instance, a fire that burns part of the stadium is smaller in
consequence than a fire that guts the university library.
13. ConâŠ
Eminence and Prominence:
o News centers on big names. But the names must
have done what is newsworthy.
o A reporter is sure to take the minister of
information more serious than a school principal on
the same academic matter.
o There are so many people born everyday but when
the Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince
William, Catherine, becomes pregnant, itâs on major
international news media.
14. ConâŠ
Human Interest:
Humans-interest stories evoke emotions
and relate what happens to another
person. Such a story may lack other
news values.
Significance:
News must have some significance to those who
hear it. It must be capable of solving a problem.
Significance here means that news shows the
impact or relevance of events in peopleâs lives,
often in measurable terms.
15. News Elements
o When a news item has been selected, the editor
depends on news elements in deciding what to play
up in the headline and in the lead as well as how
the facts should be arranged.
o News elements refer to the contents of a given
story, something like a storyâs particulars, the
essentials of portrayed facts.
o A story about an earthquake will definitely say first
where, how many lives lost and the intensity of the
tremor.
16. ConâŠ
News elements are as follows:
What Why
When Who
Where How
For any chosen story, the editor plays up any element the reader
would want to know about first. If not first then certainly
sufficient attention to satisfy readersâ curiosity. Is it a plane
crash? What type of plane was involved, where, killing how many
people and leaving how many survivors or unhurt (or how many
have died in what type of plane that crashed where and whenâŠ)
An election â who won? With that margin?
17. News Presentation
News presentation deals with the manner of
organizing points in a story to achieve, for
instance, coherence, objectivity/fairness,
conciseness, credibility, accuracy, readability,
clarity/meaningfulness, authenticity, human
interest etc.
18. ConâŠ
o The basic advice to the editor has been:
o Read through the reporterâs work thoroughly.
o Be sure you have functional knowledge on the
topic being handled.
o Know what to doubt.
o Make language concise and clear.
o Know what is probable and what is possible.
19. ConâŠ
o Correct what you know is certainly incorrect â if
you can.
o If not, go to the reporter.
o Delete the suspicious information.
o Be sure of your facts.
o Reference materials should be handy to clarify
confusing details.
20. Accuracy:
o The foremost commandment in the newsroom is accuracy. It
is also the last. Accuracy is a cardinal point, which the editor
must keep uppermost in mind.
o There is usually no excuse for inaccuracy.
o telling the truth to the reader is the newspaperâs primary
function, the newspaper must get it right to keep readerâs
trust, which must not be taken for granted.
o The quality that makes it possible for an editor to detect and
correct errors is a combination of alertness, skepticism and a
passionate desire for accuracy
21. Objectivity:
o editor ought to represent all shades of opinion, without bias.
o The real objectivity, therefore, is covering all shades of
opinion and providing contexts, with interpretation and
investigation, to help the reader know the truth.
o objectivity may also be seen in the light of its effects: the
ability of new information to modify the readerâs
perceptions of the event. Do not assign âgood or badâ labels
(valuation statements) to events, persons or ideas.
Adjectives easily portray bias.
22. Backgrounding in News:
o Backgrounding should be done within the context of straight
news. It should not be speculative or make valuation
statements about a person or ideas.
o Unless from attributed sources, do not make predictions or
state the causes or consequences of any act. Even in
interpretative stories, valuation and unsubstantiated
predictions and consequence statements are not allowed.
23. Fairness:
this does not mean being kind to people about whom you
report. It means reporting what ought to be reported â neither
sparing evil doers nor maliciously maligning people in reports.
Some newspapers do not report the names of juvenile
criminals even when not so directed by law.
News can be withheld in the interest of law enforcement,
security and court adjudication.
24. Authenticity:
Donât report hoaxes. Editors should check against
inconsistencies and careless untruths that get into reports
mainly because of reportersâ carelessness. To stay away from
avoidable litigation, editors must be on the lookout for even
attributed statements that are clear untruth.
Clarity:
Editors must not assume that readers understand the meaning of
words used. Newspaper writers and editors must keep finding
new ways of telling the story completely in terms readers can
easily understand.
25. Improving the flow of Meaning:
Readability:
The major task of the editor is to make news readable. This
point can hardly be overstretched because editors easily forget
the point. The sentences should be short so readers can engage
with the news in more interesting way.
Word difficulty:
o Word should be clear and understandable for the
readers.
o The editor should know the right words which are
familiar to the readers.
26. ConâŠ
Reading with skepticism:
Skepticism with all kinds of stories - but more with complex
ones. The editor needs to read with skepticism. This is how he
can recognize signs that portray a confusion of facts and signs.
Meaning and completeness of facts:
The editor needs to read the story not only
for consistency of facts, but also for meaning.
He can find out if the story makes meaning by
reading it and knowing if he can make sense
of it. If not, the story will probably not make
meaning to other readers.
