NEWSPAPER ORGANIZATION
• Journalism is not only about writing and editing
of newspaper and periodicals.
• Gathering and transmission of news, business
management, advertising and other processes
connected with the production of a newspaper.
• Most of the newspapers have three main
departments- editorial, business and mechanical.
• But it varies from newspaper to newspaper
depending on the size.
DEPARTMENTS IN NEWSPAPER
• Editorial department
• Advertising department
• Circulation department
• Printing department
• Administrative department
• Stores department
• IT department
EDITORIAL DEPARMENT
• Responsible for gathering news, interpretation of
news and short listing news features.
• The editors in this department include like the
photo editor, the design editor, and the layout
editor, etc.
• The editor of the newspaper alone cannot handle
the work and is therefore assisted by chief
correspondent, Resident editors, Managing
Editors Dy. Editors, Asst. Editors, Sub Editors,
photographers, cartoonists, feature writers.
STAFF OF EDITORIAL DEPARTMENT
ADVERTISING DEPARTMENT
• Very important department in the revenue
generation aspect.
• It looks after collecting advertisements that
are placed in every newspaper edition.
• The sector looks into classified ads, local,
national, real estate ads, the law adds.
CIRCULATION DEPARTMENT
• It looks after the circulation or distribution of
copies of the newspaper.
• Three main responsibilities-
• Selling the Paper.
• Delivering it to retailers.
• Collecting data from subscribers.
PRINTING DEPARTMENT
• Production aspects of the newspaper.
• Installation and maintenance of machines,
• Compiling the data into the newspaper format
and then putting it on paper.
• Example- printing plate preparation, printing,
cutting, folding, etc.
ADMINISTRATIVE DEPARTMENT
• This department looks after the general
administrative work- pertaining to personnel
selection, training, promotion, allotment of work,
maintaining eave record, liaison with government
departments, general facilities and all such work
that facilitates working of other departments.
• In the absence of a separate legal department,
the administrative department also handles the
work pertaining to legal matters.
STORE DEPARTMENT
• It looks after the storage work and It
maintains and keeps a record of the stocks of
raw material (paper, ink, stencils, etc) and
finished goods (the printed newspaper).
IT DEPARTMENT
• Hardware setup and maintenance.
• Technical support.
• IT security.
• Website design and maintenance.
• Program design.
EXTRA DEPARTMENTS
• Personnel Department-Recruitment, training, promotions,
transfer, retirements are taken care of here.
• Legal Department–Taken care of legal problems like
defamation, libel, etc.
• PR Department-Tries to create and sustain a positive
image for the newspaper.
• Internet Department-Sharing the news on social media.
• Accounting Department: This department looks after all
the accounting work like maintaining books of accounts,
preparing balance sheet and other financial statements,
payment, receipt, preparation of budget, financial planning,
cost control etc.
