• On 15 July 2016, a group of Turkish army launched a military operation to
takeover the government .
• It was against state institutions, including the government and
President Rajab Tayyab Erdogan.
• At that day Soldiers were on the streets and a number of explosions rang
out in Ankara and Istanbul.
• Turkish fighter jets dropped bombs on their own parliament.
• The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hulusi Akar, was
kidnapped by his own security detail.
• It was the 4th military coup against Turkish government.
• A curfew, martial law and the preparation of a new constitution
was announced.
• It was a failed attempt as thousands of people came out to
oppose the coup.
• 241 people were killed and 2,194 others were injured.
• TV stations were raided by soldiers,
• Soldiers having taken over State TV and forced the anchorwoman to read, over and
over, that the declaration of the coup to restore democracy and human rights.
• Media channels and satellite communication links were completely under the control of
coup.
Erdogan’s Response to
coup by use of social
Media
• As Television channels were under the control of coup, president Erdogan
took social media to convey his message to people.
• Social media play an important role in this case hence the News of the coup
attempt spread via social media.
• Firstly, he took FaceTime app to reach out a television presenter.
In his message he said;
• “We will overcome this,” Mr Erdogan told the CNN Turk anchor. “Go to the

• The crowd fought against coup, and with the help of loyalist
soldiers and police forces, they defeated the coup attempt in a
matter of hours. The government swiftly declared victory and

the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul.
• In the matter of hours, social media feeds flooded with
Erdogan’s support.
• Pictures of citizen surrounding coup and tanks, fighting
against rebels were all over the social media.
• In the matter of hours, pictures of troops turning over
their weapons and surrendering were broadcast.
Criticism:
• Many times Erdogan restricted social media apps in Turkey.
• Some people criticized Erdogan’s rule, using social media that he has
repeatedly denounced to save his own presidency.
• During the coup attempt, social media apps were difficult to access by
many of people.
• In past, Turkish Government has Restricted Social media many time
for according to their own polices and need several times they
banned Youtube, twitter and other sites
Conclusion
Digital platform are new public
sphere?
• Erdogan’ victory was another milestone in digital messaging's
growing influence in shaping world events.
• social media platforms can empower individuals.
• But Erdogan reminded us that not all social media users are
created equal. The laws of power apply, and those with influence
find it easiest to use social media to get even more.
• Many accounts of social media users were blocked and
investigated who were against the government after the incident.
• Social media said to be as new public sphere.
• But the freedom of individuals to form and share their opinion is
limited.
• Social media in government is a game changer.
• After all, not many things have changed the way the public interacts
with governments more than social media.
• On social, people can engage in direct dialogue with politicians, civic
officials, and even entire government agencies. It also gives them a
chance to engage back.
• Social media isn’t just a good way to share memes and keep up with
what’s trending. It can also be a very powerful way for government
agencies to interact with the public.
