Neurotransmitters are chemicals located and released in the brain that allow communication between neurons. They gather in the space between neurons called the synapse and act on receptors on the receiving neuron. Some key neurotransmitters include acetylcholine, which triggers muscle contraction and is involved in wakefulness; dopamine, which controls movement and modulates mood; GABA, which regulates anxiety; and glutamate, which is associated with learning and memory. Scientists have identified over 60 molecules that meet the criteria to be considered neurotransmitters.
