Darwin's discovery of natural selection is considered a scientific theory rather than a fact or hypothesis. A theory in science is an explanation or model supported by evidence from observation and experimentation. The Theory of Natural Selection proposes that species evolve over generations as favorable inherited traits become more common through the process of survival of the fittest. Darwin initially proposed natural selection as a hypothesis, or educated guess, but it is now accepted as a scientific theory that best explains how evolution by natural selection occurs.
