Natalie Watkins Analysis
Natalie Watkins is a promising young artist born in Stockton, Ca. She began to study art at an early age, and over the years has established herself
as profound human being. She considers her style of painting as a contemporary, and her works range from gender and sexuality to social and
political issues. Her art is showcased in cafes and small venues throughout Stockton, Ca. The untitled painting, which is one of her early works, is
painted in dark colors of grey and black portraying a figure sitting alone on a dark and stormy night. The figure sits in the pouring rain in the middle
of a street watching a small sailboat, something similar to an old fashion pirate boat, float away down the gutter. The artist hides most of the person
including their face from the view with a large umbrella. Most of the colors are in black and grey with the exception of the figures sweater, which is
in a bright yellow and the water which is painted in blue and white.
What do I notice from the paintings is a figure sitting all alone amidst a rainy storm as if he or she awaits change at a turning point in their life. The
starkness of the painting shows the figures emotions and feelings are strong and yet there is always sunshine after the rain. ... Show more content on

The image shows a sailing ship, it could be an optimistic view of the painter expressing their particular direction of their goals and how we make
choices in life. Or goals that are merely drifting away because it is difficult to get what we want out of life at times. Also sailing away could be a
form of independence and freedom were we wish to break free from the constraints of everything we do in our daily lives. sailing on stormy waters

Pros And Cons Of Christopher Columbus
In 1492, Christopher Columbus began the voyage that would earn him the name as the most successful failure in modern history. Columbus began his
voyage as a Spanish explorer seeking a new trade route to the East Indies with two caravels and one flagship. Additionally, Columbus armed his fleet
with eighty–eight crewmen. Columbus arrived at his supposed destination in approximately three months after he first set sail in Spain. Columbus'
arrival on land marked a monumental stepping stone for European nations, Columbus had discovered the new world. Without a doubt, Christopher
Columbus experienced difficulties on his voyage due to his lack of access to modern technological tools. Christopher Columbus would have most
benefited from better ships, weather gauging tools, and any form of communication. Therefore, if Christopher Columbus had the resources available
today, perhaps he would have landed in his desired destination and the decimation of native civilizations may have been prevented. Christopher
Columbus crossed the oceans in three ships that were ill–suited for the voyage across the Atlantic. For example, these explorers were archaic compared
to the technology of new ships of the 20th century. In fact, the ships Columbus used could sail up to eight knots in speed which led to the slow trek
across the sea (Christopher Columbus Ship). Today's ships can travel up to twenty–five knots (Are Modern Ships Slower Than Sailing Ships? Probably
Not). Columbus would have arrived

Essay On Ship Of Theseus
I think that the Ship of Theseus is an interesting idea. Every summer since 2002, my family has gone to Hale Reservation. About ten years ago, I
began to take sailing lessons there, and I continued to take them until I started working there two years ago. Then, I started teaching some of the
lessons. During my time at Hale, many of the parts of the sailboats have changed. They are constantly switched between the different boats. All of
the sailboats are very old, and the parts break frequently, or sometimes they are just lost. I remember about five years ago, one of the ropes fell off
and sank. This is just one of the many parts that has needed to be replaced. I never realized how frequently the pieces broke, until I had to figure out
what they needed to buy so the boats would work. Although the parts of the boat themselves are always different, I stillfeel that they are still the same
as when I started taking sailing lessons there. I feel that they are the same as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I started going there, I was just a little kid. As I have grown up, Hale has changed. The things I liked to do there, and the people that worked
there are two of the noticeable things to me, and every year they are at least slightly different. Many of the lifeguards that I really liked don't work
there anymore. I know next year, assuming I work there again, will be very different. My brother had worked there for the last seven years, and
for the two years that I work there, he was the head lifeguard. It is going to be strange with him not there, since he just graduated college and isn't
going to be back. In the fifteen years of going to Hale, he was always been there, either with my family, or working there. Everything at Hale is
changing. I thought it was kind of weird a couple years ago when someone who used to work at Hale and taught me sailing lessons had to ask me if
they could use one of the sailboats. This really made me realize how much things had

Golden Age Of Piracy
Pirate, privateer, Cosarios luteranos, and buccaneer are all names given to skilled ocean–sailing vigilantes that survived off of goods they plundered
from others. Pirates drastically altered life in the Caribbean. They controlled both the islands and the sea during the 1500's, which is accurately
nicknamed "The Golden Age of Piracy." Begining with British Protestants, piracy spread throughout the New World like wild fire. Notorious
criminals in search of wealth overseas, known as pirates, lived harsh lives and left a major impact on Caribbean history. Many factors led to the
outbreak of piracy in the Caribbean. Conflicts in activities of everyday life, such as religion, were motives for pirates. Inspired by Martin Luther's 95
Theses, King Henry VIII split ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although there were thousands of pirates throughout the Caribbean, several were notoriously skilled in the trade, such as Jack Rackham. Also
known as Calico Jack due to his preference for cheap and brightly colored clothes, Rackham succeeded in attacking many smaller vessels that were
abundant in treasures. However, his expertise in piracy is not the only thing he is famous for. The relationship between Calico Jack, Anne Bonny,
and Marry Reed is one of the most popular stories about the pirates of the Caribbean. Anne Bonny was married to John Bonny, who introduced her
to the pirate life in New providence, Bahamas. She quickly became uninterested in her marriage and involved with Calico Jack. Bonny began
disguising herself as a man and sailing the seas with Rackham and his crew. Mary Read chose the pirate life, as well. Similar to Bonny, "Mark"
Read disguised herself as a male because she knew life of a man was far easier than the life of a woman in their time. Bonny became attracted to
Read and both revealed her true gender. Rumor states that the two women were lovers and involved in a "love triangle" with Calico Jack, but there is
no evidence to justify this

Radical Formulas
This week we learned about Radical Formulas and how this can be applied in our everyday lives. Radicals seem very complicated at first, but because
we have learned so much already, it is just taking what we already know and apply it to the problem that we have been assigned. I have been asked to
work a problem 103 and 104 on pages 605 and 606 of our math book Elementary and Intermediate Algebra. We are going to break out each step to
show how we came to our answer. By breaking out our problems, we will have a better understanding of the solving radical formulas.
We will start working problem 103 on page ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For a boat with a displacement of d pounds and a sail area of A square feet S is determined by the function S = 16Ad–2/3. a) Find S to the nearest tenth
for the Tartan 4100, which has a sail area of 810 square feet and a displacement of 23,245 pounds. b) Write d in terms of A and S .
Step one
Starting with our formula.
Step two
Here we have plugged in the values into our formula. When solving we do order of operations first and we will solve exponents first.
Step three
Complete the multiplication
Step four
This is our solution
Now we will solve the second part of the problem.
Step one
Step two
We will divide by 16A
Step three
Step four
Raise all the parts to the –3/2 power.
Step five
The (16A)3/2 has became the reciprocal to the 3/2 power
Step six
Here is the solution for d.
To conclude we showed how use the Radical Formulas in each problem that we were working. We broke out each step so that we would have a better
time understanding how one would answer this question. We have shown our work in hopes that other will be able to follow these same steps to find
their solutions. We now have a better understanding of the Radical Formulas.

Essay On South Floria
South Florida's ascendancy to the epicenter of the cruise industry began long before the modern cruise lines were born. Early in the twentieth century, a
group of daring visionaries and entrepreneurs began to dream of expanding the local business community and creating new industries to take advantage
of Florida's climate with its sunshine and warmth. Chief among these businesses they envisioned a winter tourism trade but to realize this dream they
would require a strong transportation infrastructure.
The coastal shipping trade along the United States' East Coast helped to bring the first visitors to Florida spurred on by the growing railroad empires
developed by Henry Flagler and Henry B. Plant. By the 1890s, these railroad tycoons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then in 1913, the Plant Line, now owned by Flagler's Peninsular & Occidental Steamship Company (P&O), decided to send its new 3,786–ton steamer
the ss Evangeline on winter pleasure cruises. But, instead of sailing from the new ports, she cruised from Key West calling at Panama, Jamaica, and
Cuba. The following winter the cruises were repeated but this time sailing from Jacksonville. All the remained was to link these new cruise efforts with
the emerging South Florida ports.
After World War I, a flourishing trade developed with steamers such as the 1,700 gross ton ss City of Miami and the 3,200 gross ton ss Northland,
maintaining overnight runs between Miami and Havana. However, sensing that the ports still lacked a proper infrastructure to maintain the shipping
industry, the first of many efforts began to improve the facilities. In Miami, a US$3 million project was undertaken in 1925 to dredge and widen the
channel. Similarly, to the north, the Mayor of Hollywood was the driving force for a US$6 million project to deepen the harbor inlet, widen the turning
basin and build modern 35–foot piers at Bay Mable. Completed early in 1928, it is said that more than 85 percent of the residents of Broward County
turned out to witness the dedication of their new port. At the same time, local women's groups led successful efforts to replace the unpopular Bay
Mable Harbor name which what they thought would be a

Personal Narrative Essay : My Family Camp
I decided to write about my family camp, this camp is for special needs (like for my brother). In general that was the only the second overnight camp
I've been to, so it was really fun. We did many activities like fishing, kayaking and much more. At that camp I met many of my old friends that been to
that camp for the second time, we would have much a fun time together. In the afternoon we would go sailing fishing and do campfires.
The worst part of this whole family camp is that we have to drive there. The drive was 3 hours long but it felt like forever, I felt like throwing up
because I have motion sickness, we stopped a lot during the car ride for washroom breaks and to get candy. We finally arrived atthe camp, some staff
led us to our cabin (cabin loon), we then listened to "sell the sizzle" (what activities there are the next day, and we ate dinner. The next day I would
see my friends that came last year. When the day started, we did the activities we chose.
During break and bonding time my friends and I would do some fishing, sailing and swimming. Something ridiculous we would do is that we would
ask the staff if we were allowed to flip the sailboat, and the staff would let us because they "knew for sure" it's not possible to flip. A reason we were
allowed to do these things is because one of my friends is the son of the nurse working there. Back to the topic, every day when we went sailing, we
would try to tip the boat over but only manage to get some water in.

Pirate Ship Research Paper
Types of Pirate Ships
By: Caleb J.
Carracks can carry 1,200 pounds and are one of the largest ships that pirates used. There are also other kinds of ships that pirates use like Naval ships,
Cargo ships, and Transportation ships.
First of all, Naval ships have lots of armor and cannons for protection, like an Ironclad with iron frames for protection from cannons and other fire
power from enemy ships. The Brig and Panstership are both huge Naval ships. Also a fire ship was a ship filled with TNT that could be lighted and
used to destroy other ships. The Corvette was a lightly armed warship, also Cutters were fast warships. The Sloop–of–War has 18 cannons. Another one,
is the Penteconter was a 50 oar warship, also a Brigantine was driven by oars.

Crossroads Fishing Derby Case Summary
landed a catfish, which catapulted the sales department to victory in the first annual Crossroads Fishing Derby. Despite all the obvious obstacles
and the change in leadership the true hotel servers managed to bring a smile to everyone's face. Of course Japes and Bombay thought the trophy
should go to the largest fish, but that would have to be taken under advisement by the fishing committee. It was an uphill battle for poor Bombay as
he truly was a server on his own. The Crossroads Hotel was not a financial windfall for the owners as the economy had eroded and this tertiary
market was only a shadow of what it had been in its day. Bombay would tell Japes "We are just the diapers of the operation" and that is how they treat

Even Shekelhound who was a bean counter himself would visit with and get to know the operational servers. The hotel was forced to cut back on
any event that would cost money and not give a direct return. This included limiting the employee luncheons to once per quarter and the annual
holiday party expenditure to less then two thousand dollars. The owners would also put on a wage freeze for nearly two years while escalating the
server's expense for healthcare and other basic needs. Scrooge used to make an annual visit but would never be seen on property again as he pushed
his agenda of inequality and disrespect. In fact, the entire reporting structure became so laissez–faire

Descriptive Essay About Microcosm
Humanity delights in escaping reality even if only for a short time. Some choose to play sports, some watch tv, and others still choose to spend their
time reading. Withdrawal from reality links all hobbies together. Likewise, I like to achieve this liberation by sailing. Imagine the wind gusting across
your body, the smell of the strong scent of water in your nostrils, and the thrill of the wind thrusting your boat along. I was astounded when I
discovered this microcosm twenty minutes away in the middle of the scorching desert.
Immediately upon exiting the car, I am greeted by the familiar telltale smell of the lake. It is a combination of a fishy and algae scent that isn't overly
pleasant, nevertheless, it doesn't detract from the experience. On nice windy days, I felt the wind blow through my hair and saw the telltale whitecaps
forming on the water's surface. On sunny days I saw the afternoon sun make the greenish–brown water glimmer majestically and reflect off of the glass
in the high rise buildings. I walked to the gated boatyard adjacent to the parking lot to retrieve my boat.
I walked just beyond the middle of the yard to the section where the boats for my class were stored. I picked one that appeared to be in good shape
and pushed it out of the yard towards the lake. If I had luck on my side a friend would also help me with this, nonetheless, it is an easy job on the
way out of the yard because the exit is sloped slightly down hill. After I removed the boat from the boatyard, The instructor would either tell me to
help someone transport another boat out of the boatyard After all the boats were out and ready to be rigged, the instructor would tell the other
students and me to start rigging the boats. Normally, I take about ten minutes to rig a boat myself and five with help from a friend. It is a pretty
simple process and involves checking the boat for any damage, making sure the drain plug is screwed in tight, and hoisting the sails halfway up. Next,
the instructor launches the boats with his truck and I rushed to the boat to prepare it to sail. I would lower the keel and rudder, raise the sails to the top
of the mast. At last, I was sailing.
When I first set the sail and feel the wind just start

The Vasa Gunship Catastrophe
Introduction
In 1626, the Swedish gunship, Vasa, was constructed for war against Poland. King Gustav II of Sweden spared no expense and demanded the ship be
the grandest, most prestigious watercraft ever created. His demand was fulfilled, however due to continuous design changes, inadequate communication
, and a stringent timeline, the ship was poorly constructed. As a result, Vasa sunk after sailing only 1,000 yards, perishing 50 men and all of the war
supplies.
1.Who is responsible for this catastrophe?
In this case, it is difficult to blame one individual for the Vasa catastrophe because several decision–makers were involved. Still, King Gustav's
numerous design alterations complicated construction and pressured decision–makers into accommodating his irrational demands. Additionally, King
Gustav did not communicate well with the shipbuilders, admiral, and seamen, and instead solely concentrated on outshining other ships. Therefore, his
lacking leadership and communication created confusion and stress, which trickled down and ultimately led to the failure.
2.Were there any inappropriate risks that should not have been taken? How can these be identified and mitigated on future shipbuilding initiatives?
During construction, there were several inappropriate risks taken. For example, time was not invested into accurately drawing engineering plans that
accommodated the King's requests to increase the size of the keel and number of guns. Additionally, when the principal

Moor Research Paper
The derivation of the English term, "Moor," is the Greek word, "ОјО±П…ПЃОї" or "mavro" which accurately means "black, blackened or charred",
says taneter.org. They go on to then say, how this English term 'Moor' has been used to describe black or very dark things such as, "Mavri
Thalassa" which refers to the Black Sea. Ancient Greeks used this term to describe the complexion of Africans or objects of that matter. The
origination of the term 'Moor' is even used in various terms that describe the color 'black'. For example the Spanish word 'blackberry', is translated in
Spanish as 'zaramora' , which carries the root word 'mor'. The term 'Moor', also define a partial part of our postsecondary education, and example of
this can be Morehouse College. The college itself describe itself as, "The only all–male historically black institution of higher learning in the United
States." They go on to even then designate it as, "the college of choice for black men." It is now evident of the trend that initiated from Renaissance
ages in Europe to our everyday lives today. Therefore it creates a proposal asking us, what was the influential things the Moors brought to Europe

Rogue Wave Analysis
It is not safe for teens to sail by themselves or with friends. Although, sailing by themselves or with friends can help them get more experience with
sailing and even fishing. It can also help them learn more about the ocean and the different things in the ocean. But, many things could go wrong while
they are sailing and no one can help them, they could die or go missing forever! If a teen goes sailing by themselves or with few friends, they could
go missing somewhere in the ocean and no one could find them. In the article "Marine experts say missing Fla. teenagers should not have been alone
offshore," it says that "Two 14–year–old boys had gone missing off the coast of Florida in a fishing boat," it doesn't say if they have found the children
yet so they probably haven't. It also says that they searched day and night and haven't found the children. Also, if a teen goes sailing by themselves,
many things could go wrong, like somethings could break, something could fall out of the boat, or someone could get trapped in the boat. In the short
story "Rogue Wave" Scoot had gotten trapped under the deck and was sinking every minute. In the story, it says that the doors were jammed and there

The World Of The Redemptora Construction
At the time of the Redemptora construction, its pre–industrial design as a full–rigged wooden ship could still accomplish the new demands of the
emerging markets worldwide, notwithstanding new technological changes on the horizon caused by a crescent industrialism. By this time new
experiments with auxiliary propulsion of ships had already been carried out for many years and resulted in improved steam engines and propellers.
Both steam and sailing ships were subjected to improvements and innovative construction methods, such as composite hulls (of which the Cutty Sark is
a famous example), and later iron/steel. Although steamships had already been present in sea transportation for decades, they were still used in
relatively short and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, it was the relative ease of wooden construction methods and cheap propulsion (wind), that would make the wooden sailing ship still
attractive even in the last decades of the 19th century. All that was needed was a suitable location, close to water, a constant and large supply of
wood and human power under the command of experienced carpenters. For repairs, wooden ships had also advantages as they could be carried out
on board whenever possible, and this is why carpenter's presence on board had always been vital. If the need for large repairs were needed, they could
be done in smaller shipyards, still common in those days. (Greenhill 1993a, 24–26).
When compared to iron shipbuilding, The Achilles' heel of wood building technology was the limited length of ships that could be built and above all
the demand for careful maintenance. An additional defect of such large wooden vessels was their structural flexibility making them ill–suited to steam
propulsion and propellers in particular. As their age increased they had a tendency to hog and drop at the extremities with the possibility of
disintegrating into their constituent parts. These details prevented the installation of propellers as auxiliary or main propulsion on board, a problem
solved only with the development of the iron hull (Greenhill 1993b, 21–22).
In the end, the iron ship was only able to compete with wood construction when iron/steel and wages costs

Letters from the Samantha
An interesting short story is "Letters from The Samantha" by Mark Helpin. This story tells the fascinating tale, in the form of never sent
letters, of an ape brought aboard an iron–hulled sailing ship in 1909 by Samson Low, the ship's captain. Although the author makes a point to tell the
reader, through Samson Low, that the animal does not symbolize anything or mean anything, in fact, "He stands for nothing" (280), several
arguments can be made to contradict this. One could argue that the ape symbolized the untamed and rarely used wild side of Samson Low through a
comparison of their personalities, appearances, and the way they are treated by others. Samson Low was a captain of a ship owned by the Green Star
Line. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is listlessВ…" (280). For the first time the captain has headaches' on the same journey he has taken aboard an ape. The heat my be partially
to blame but the guilt he feels of not living his life as he secretly wants to could also be a factor. The ape also imitates what Samson Low does. When
Samson offers his hand to the creature, "In imitation, he put out his arm, looking much less fearsome." (277). The captain and the ape act
as if they are communicating on a different, more primitive level. At times, the crew's behavior is primitive as well. Their reactions change throughout
the story. At first they fear the ape as a wild creature until the captain "tames' him. "The crew has divide into two factions–those who wish
to have the monkey shot, and those who would В… put him in his boat". (274). Because they do not understand him they wish to be rid of him.
The next stage is acceptance and approval. After the creature comes down from the rigging and takes the captain's hand, "the crew cheered and
laughed" (277). Now that they no longer fear him, they enjoy his novelty as a kind of pet. They write home and describe the ape with some
pride; they are the ones who have this animal and have conquered him. The next step is indifference. The crew ignored the ape where they had had such

International Sailing Federation : The World Governing...
International Sailing Federation
Brandon Bowers
September 28, 2014 Introduction
The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) is the world governing body for the sport of sailing, officially recognized by the International Olympic
Committee (IOC). (Kemp, 1976) In 2007 ISAF celebrated its Centenary year which symbolized its existence of international sailing cooperation and
rules starting in europe and expanding to north america than the world. They now consist of 138 Member nations who are responsible for the
governance of the sailing world. They govern over one hundred sailing classes from 420mm dinghies to off shore racing classes up to sixty foot
monohulls. They started this from club racing before there was international competition.
History The world saw a need for common rules for sailing from the day different clubs wanted to compete against each other. While the clubs
individually had their own set of rules there was yet to have a set of standards across internationally. In the late 1800's britain formed an organization
of a combination of clubs called the Yacht Racing Association. This while bring britain under common rule didn't include spain, europe or north

meeting in London to put rules into place on boats and practices. This lead to the creation of the International Yacht Racing Union which at the

Queen Anne's Revenge Essay
Swoosh! Splash! Swish! A pirate ship sails through the salty ocean. Three pirate ships sail across the same deep glimmering marine. They all meet
around the cove, but they all get ready for rivalry. One ship starts dismissing their cannons at their enemies. Just then, the other two ships began to sail
away, but one cannonball proceeded towards one ship, and struck the ship leaving it to sink. Pirates used ships to get to their destination, and to be
ready for their enemies. First of all, the Queen Anne's Revenge was one of the most famous pirate ship. The Queen Anne's Revenge was originally
a French owned slave ship. The ship first name was "La Concorde De Nantes." It was found in 1996. Furthermore, the ship had 26 guns, and was
captured from the French merchants. Queen Anne's Revenge was one of the most powerful ships in American waters. The name "Queen Anne's
Revenge" comes from Queen Anne, who was one of the principal actors in the War of the Spanish Succession in which Blackbeard was likely a

Example Of Piracy Research Paper
Pirates are criminals who steal vessels, people and goods on the sea and coastal areas. Privateers were privately owned ships that captured sea trade
under orders from various governments. Buccaneers were government–sponsored pirate crews who attacked Spanish ships in the Caribbean during the

First, a pirate attack that significantly endangered any country was pirate attacks on Olympos in 3rd century BC. Earliest pirates came from first

of other pirates after him was Henry Every, English pirate who managed not only to capture largest pirate loot of all time, but he managed to remain
free until his death. The most usual origin of pirates was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Occurrences of buried pirate treasure were greatly popularized by novelists, but in reality, only two such events were ever verified, one by English
captain Francis Drake, who buried cargo of Silver, and pirate William Kidd who buried his treasure before he knew he would be arrested. He was
sentenced to death, and treasure was never found. In the history of piracy, there were not many women. But several managed to rise to prominence,
most notably Anne Bonny and Mary Read, who served together on a pirate ship. Anne Bonny was in the relationship with pirate Captain Calico Jack
Rackham, who was caught and hanged in 1720. Mary Read died in prison from fever, but final fate of Anne Bonny is not known.
The life of and average pirate would be less adventurace than you may imagine. Their average day included sailing, sailing, and more sailing. They

The Mystery Ship Research Paper
The Mystery Ship
When I read this story it brought to mind all of those Dracula movies that I have seen where they show a ship coming into harbor with no one alive
aboard or a ship full of corpses. The American ship Mary Celeste was seen sailing erratically by Captain David Morehouse aboard the British brig Dei
Gratia near the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The strangest thing was that the ship was seaworthy and all of its stores and supplies were aboard
and untouched but there was not a single living soul on the vessel.
On November 7, 1872 the Mary Celeste sailed from New York harbor heading for Genoa, Italy. Aboard the ship were Captain Benjamin S. Briggs, his
wife and two year old daughter and a crew of eight. The cargo consisted

Nailer Lopez Shipbreaker Characters
Nailer Lopez is an adolescent ship breaker, living in Bright Sands beach, a survival–of–the–fittest shipbreaking yard that is overridden with poverty
and deception. Despite his dire situation, Paolo Bacigalupi paints the picture of a loyal, determined and courageous young man. To me, he was one
of the most interesting characters in the novel Shipbreaker and was very relatable. This is why I found him interesting. Nailer is interesting
because he is extremely loyal. This is interesting because in his world, it is do or die, survival of the fittest. Most would betray even their closest
friends, put into his situation. Blood ties would be all that you can rely on in that sort of world, and Nailer doesn't even have solid family loyalty.
Despite all these people that he can't trust, including his father, he still manages to remain completely loyal to a select few. For example: "We're crew.
I'm not selling her." from pg. 179, "her" being Nita. He could have sold her off in that moment and been richer than Lucky Strike, but he remains loyal.
This is an interesting characteristic for him to possess, and helped him through his conflicts.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He finds Nita buried under furniture and presumably dead. He then realises she is alive and starts debating whether to kill her or not. He eventually
comes to the decision that she is worth more alive, saying "We can't make a Lucky Strike like this... it would be like Sloth was with me." (pg. 97).
This showed that his moral compass is intact and points in the right direction. This also shows that he is quick–thinking, and able to make split–second
decisions. The internal conflict he had and the result of that conflict depended on his determination to save

Essay On The Columbian Exchange
1. The lateen sail was a technological advancement that allowed ships to sail into a headwind. Initially used by the Arabs and later adopted by the
Europeans whom combined the lateen sail with other technologies, such as the compass, opened up trade opportunities and improved skills such as
mapmaking. The lateen sail was triangular and would allow for maximum sail. The lateen sail was faster than previous inventions, expediting travel
and trade. Additionally, the lateen sail could be combined with bigger hulls and rigs, allowing sailors to navigate open water. Ultimately expanding
trade routes and allowing for an increase in cargo capacity. 2. The Plantation Complex refers to a system based on African slavery that utilized forced
labor to produce cash crops to benefit the Europeans. This system took centuries to develop and spread across several continents. Beginning in the

The Columbian Exchange refers to the exchange of plants, animals, diseases, people, and technologies between Europe, Africa, South America and
North America. The Columbian Exchange began after Columbus discovered America. In addition to the transfer of biological and technological ideas
and resources, a network of trade and communication was established. This exchange transformed each nation's way of life. American crops that were
transported to Europe, provided nutritional needs and helped to grow the population. Livestock brought over to the Americas from Europe, changed the
farming and economic landscape of many settlements. Slaves brought over from Africa, created a labor force and mass food production that greatly
benefited the European economy. Additionally, pathogens brought to the Americas from Africa and Europe, drastically increased mortality rates,
transforming the population landscape. Ultimately, the Columbian Exchange catapulted Europe into a top position of global power, surpassing Asia

Descriptive Essay On The Experience In The Beach
With a great vigor, humanity delights in escaping reality, even if only for a short time. Some choose to play sports, some watch TV, and others still
choose to spend their time reading. Withdrawal from reality links all hobbies together. Likewise, I like to achieve this liberation by sailing. Imagine the
wind gusting across your body, the smell of the strong scent of water in your nostrils, and the thrill of the breeze thrusting your boat along. Personally, I
was astounded when I discovered this microcosm twenty minutes away in the middle of the scorching desert.
Immediately upon exiting the car, the familiar tell–tale smell of the lake hit me. The lake smelled like a combination of a fish and algae scent that
seemed slightly putrid nevertheless, it did not detract from the experience. On blustery days, I felt the zephyr blow through my hair and saw the telltale
whitecaps forming on the water's surface. On sunny days I saw the afternoon sun make the greenish–brown water glimmer majestically and reflect off
of the glass in the high rise buildings. Nonchalantly, I ambled to the gated boatyard adjacent to the parking lot to retrieve my boat.
Casually, I sauntered just beyond the middle of the yard to the section where my class stored the boats. Following a cursory inspection, I culled one
that appeared to be in satisfactory shape and pushed it out of the yard towards the lake. If I had luck on my side a friend would also help me with this,
nonetheless, I hold the opinion

My Interest in a Career at Sea
I have always been interested in the sea, in particularly the merchant navy and have spent a lot of time on the water. I live near two busy port towns
and have always had an interest in the ships coming and leaving the harbour. When I started looking into future career opportunities, this was always
the career path I wanted to pursue. It is exciting, unique and no two days are the same.
My interest in a career at sea really kicked off after joining the school sailing club, where I achieved RYA level 1 and 2 indinghy sailing. Eager to learn
more, I joined a sailing club in Chichester Harbour. I now enjoy social sailing and club racing. At the age of 15 I completed my RYA– Power Boat
Level 2, Safety Boat and First Aid qualifications and at 16 achieved a RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification to teach on coastal waters.
I was a member of the 5th Chichester Scout group starting from Beavers, to Scouts, working up through all the ranks. It was a great experience which
helped me to build lasting friendships; to get outdoors and to learn people skills. I spent some memorable times hiking on the South Downs, learning to
plan routes, map reading and working in teams.
As a member of the junior dinghy instructor team at Dell Quay Sailing club, I volunteer my time to teach sailing and to support the junior race series,
either by helming a safety boat or as an assistant race officer. Each summer, the club runs a junior week where the junior instructors are encouraged too
take the lead.

Why Should Teens Be Allowed To Sail
Teens should be allowed to sail because there are many benefits. For example It is a very important experience in their life. Also they gain
independence and responsibility. Ok, you may say its dangerous but its worth it. The first reason is you can learn so much from this experience
like what you want to do when you grow up and what life as an adult is like. Also the dangers are not guaranteed sure there can a hurricane, a storm,
a rough wave etc. But there can also be no dangers the whole trip if you are very lucky. It's all chance plus you only have one life have fun in it don't
be afraid of death your whole life instead embrace it use it as an excuse to have fun in life and have no regrets. This not only a problem to kids even

The Discovery Of The New World
Ship Improvements
What were the events and improvements in ship design that lead to the discovery of the New World and enabled the subsequent expansion in global
trade? In this paper I will examine the changes and improvements in European ship design that allowed for the first transatlantic voyage to the New
World. Though the Europeans were not the first to develop the concept of the ship, they were the first to take this concept and use it to cross the
Atlantic. Even before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic to the New World, Europe had a long maritime history. Before the 15th and 16th century
European ship design had been relatively slow to advance from its initial stages. But during the 15th and 16th century European ship design
accelerated at break neck speeds to advance to the point of enabling the Age of Exploration. Dr. Edwards states, "The major difference in father
oceanic sailing was the length of the voyages between landfalls. Longer voyages meant larger crews to man watches through twenty–four hours, the
need to carry larger stores of food, wood and water, and the need for more spare equipment such as anchors and cables, sails, line for rigging, lumber,
metal work and gear for all kinds of repairs at sea or on distant shores where such things are unavailable"(Edwards. 443). To accomplish this feat many
improvements were required on earlier ship designs that were used in maritime activities along the coast of Europe and in the Mediterranean. Though

House Of The Red Fish Loyalty Quotes
What is the definition of loyalty? Some people may say that it means to have commitment to someone or something, but to Tomi Nakaji's friends,
it means something more. In the book "House of the Red Fish", readers see the amount of loyalty that circulates between everyone living in Tomi's
life. "House of the Red Fish" is an award winning book written by Graham Salisbury that talks about a boy, his friends, and his enemy who are
consistently loyal in different ways throughout the book. The book is mostly about Tomi's journey of raising his father's boat after it was sunken
due to military thinking his father was from the opposing side in WWII. Tomi shows different signs of being loyal to his father by always
listening to what his dad had said to him before he was taken away. Along with him, Tomi has some amazing friends that show loyalty by being
supportive of him, having faith in him, and they always seem to be willing to do anything to help him. Another person that shows loyalty in the
book is Keet Wilson, who always is sticking to his promise. Loyalty is shown in many ways in "House of the Red Fish" from many people such as
Tomi, Tomi's friends, and Keet Wilson. Firstly, Tomi Nakaji is a loyal person to his

My Grandmother
We sat in my grandparent's living room. The large white curtains were drawn to keep the sun from shining through. My grandpa sat in a red chair
with an extra pillow behind him to support his back as I sat in the red wheelchair that had been given to him after he had broken his hip. His face
was tanned and his hair was the same as it always was; a halo of white around his head with wispy strands on top that I remember playing with from
my childhood.. He had crinkles at the corners his eyes and smile lines near his mouth from years of laughter. My grandma was nestled in the corner to
my right with Hillary Clinton's biography in hand. The pictures of my family that my grandma had taken added a homey feeling to the room. Before
the interview there was confusion as to how we would go about it. My grandma said, "Why don't you ask the question and then..." her voice fell as
she didn't finish her question. She looked at us and began to listen as I asked my first question. My grandpa was first inspired to begin sailing when he
bought a small twelve foot sailboat while he was living in Syracuse, New York with my grandma, my dad, and aunt. It had a lateensail, which meant
that it did not have a sail on the mast in front of the boat. When they moved to Durham, New Hampshire he would sail it on the Oyster River. He
bought his boat at a store that sold boats called sunflowers. When I asked how old he was when he got his first boat, a long pause filled the air before

The True Confession Of Charlotte Doyle Analysis
In Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Zachariah, an old black man and the cook on the Seahawk, tells Charlotte, "A sailor chooses the
wind that takes the ship from safe port...but winds have a mind of their own". These wise words prove true in both literal and more symbolic ways. In
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi, Charlotte Doyle is a young student from a well–to–do family who finds herself on a ship full of men
and a mysterious captain who seems to be the right person to stick with but proves himself not to be. Charlotte must find her own wind to blow her ship
when everything seems to fall apart for her on the ship.
Charlotte realized that there was nobody on her side after the incident when Charlotte told the captain about the mutiny and then accidentally
whipped the captain's face, so she decided to take charge without the help of someone else. Charlotte decided to take charge and join the crew,
"'I've come,' I managed to say, 'to be one of the crew.'" (pg. 106). Charlotte decided to take charge of her own life like a true sailor by choosing her
own wind. Even though Charlotte had chosen the best "wind" and done the right thing, the wind she chose wasn't an easy one; she still had sort of a
hard time with the captain and she even ended up being charged of murder. Charlotte decided to choose her own wind to sail her ship, or make her own
choice when she realized that she was all alone with nobody on her side.
At the end of the book, Charlotte knew that she had to go back to her old life, but she still felt reluctant to return. She said on pg. 199 about putting
on her old clothes, "To my surprise I felt so much pinched and confined I found it difficult to breathe. I glanced at my trunk where I had secreted my
sailor's garb as a tattered memento. For a moment I considered changing back to that, but quickly reminded myself that it must– from then on– remain a
memento." Charlotte had to change back the proper lady she once had been, but because she had had a taste of what it was like to be free as a sailor,
she felt confined when she put on her old clothes. She had also changed so much– almost too much– for her to return as if nothing had happened, but
she would try because she had

Benefits Of A Successful Junior Optimist Training Program
Introduction
There is such a "spiritual joy" in being out on the water, the unwanted spray on your face, eyes squinting, the feeling of rope in your bare hands.
Learning to sail has its own "thrills and also brings with it a sense of accomplishment" . Sailing is slowly emerging as a popular sport and is
attracting young children from the ages 7 and most continue into their late 20's. Living in Port Lincoln defiantly has its disadvantages, as being such a
small remote, and rural town, young talented sailors miss out on the training, programs and recognition that they need to further their career. Many
larger cities have government run programs to teach young interested children to learn how to sail and by researching 'how to create a successful
junior Optimist learn to sail program' I hope I can attract more young children to our waters, and to take up the sport of sailing.
History of sailing
Two thirds of the world's surface is covered by water, and the majority of people "live near or close to the coast and have done so for a millennia" .
The striving of man to explore the world beyond the horizon has always been present and through the introduction of sailing in Holland in the late
17th Century, vessels carried people further offshore than ever before . For thousands of years, the wind was the only source of energy that would
allow man to travel long distances over the seven seas, such as the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. Many people doubted the idea of sailing

When the water is stagnant and quiet, that is when the trouble comes. Storms aren't the cause of most sailing crashes; it is the calmness that is

Sailing has been part of Jessica's life since she can remember and sailing has been around since mankind can remember.
Having her home on the water was not the only reason Jessica fell in love with sailing, it was also the people who had sailed before her. Kay Cottee

Ships: Ship and Vessels
SHIPS
Since the end of the age of sail a ship has been any large buoyant watercraft. Ships are generally distinguished from boats based on size and cargo or
passenger capacity. Ships are used on lakes, seas, and rivers for a variety of activities, such as the transport of people or goods, fishing, entertainment,
public safety, and warfare. Historically, a "ship" was a vessel with sails rigged in a specific manner.
Ships and boats have developed alongside humanity. In armed conflict and in daily life they have become an integral part of modern commercial and
military systems. Fishing boats are used by millions of fishermen throughout the world.

This difficulty is increased by the fact that the terms such as sloop and frigate are used by old and new ships alike, and often the modern vessels
sometimes have little in common with their predecessors.
Today
In 2007, the world's fleet included 34,882 commercial vessels with gross tonnage of more than 1,000 tons,[42] totaling 1.04 billion tons.[1] These
ships carried 7.4 billion tons of cargo in 2006, a sum that grew by 8% over the previous year.[1] In terms of tonnage, 39% of these ships are tankers,
26% arebulk carriers, 17% container ships and 15% were other types.[1]
In 2002, there were 1,240 warships operating in the world, not counting small vessels such as patrol boats. The United States accounted for 3 million
tons worth of these vessels, Russia 1.35 million tons, the United Kingdom 504,660 tons and China 402,830 tons. The 20th century saw many naval
engagements during the two world wars, the Cold War, and the rise to power of naval forces of the two blocs.
The size of the world's fishing fleet is more difficult to estimate. The largest of these are counted as commercial vessels, but the smallest are
legion.Fishing vessels can be found in most seaside villages in the world. As of 2004, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimated
4 million fishing vessels were operating worldwide.[43]

The Canadian Shipbuilding Industry
Be that as it may, shipbuilding and ship repair has been an old industry held in the country, which regardless of what many may think, has been
important to the initial stages of development for the nation as a whole. As a result, the historical significance of the industry can be assigned to one of
the few industries that managed to aid in successfully contributing to the development of the national identity. From this, the shipbuilding industry as a
whole must be detailed in order to directly correspond its long–lasting effects through its actions. The initial demand for ships were usually generated

The Ship Poem
Within The Ship Starting, there are three notable instances of repetition. For one, the word "ship" occurs three times (including in the title). Given that
ships are the topic of interest in the poem, this instance of repetition has the basic effect of bringing the locus of the text back to the title, or central
theme. The second example can be observed in the second and third lines, where the word "sails" is followed by "moonsails," a made–up compound
version of the former word. Using the same word twice, and in this case, by adding on and modifying its second appearance, the reader is likely to
acquire a clear picture of the scene that Whitman lays out in the poem. Emphasizing the image of the ship's "sails" by preceding the words with diction
such as "all" and "even" attributes the sails to a sense of abundance or freedom. The third instance of repetition occurs in line four, where "she
speeds she speeds" is used to describe the motions that the ship is making. Whereas it would be considered grammatically correct to include a
comma after the first mention of "she speeds," leaving it out better reflects the content of the poem: "she speeds she speeds" gives the impression of a
ship slicing through the water quickly. In many cases, using the same word twice in a row takes away from a text's message, but in The Ship Starting,
this repetition instead works in Whitman's favor by supporting the visual imagery he seeks to create.
Walt Whitman's The Ship Starting is a poem that

"Should I send a teenager who has no experience with crisis out into the largest wilderness in the world, completely surrounded on all sides by
something that will kill them if they get in it?" Teens should not sail because even though you can see the surface of the water, you don't know what
lies beneath. The water can be calm, but at the same time can be vicious.
The boaters passed the boating test, but the test doesn't put you in a real–life crisis. "Teenagers can spend years on the water and still be emotionally
and mentally unprepared to deal with emergency situations." Even though they might be prepared physically, they might not be emotionally. For
example when you hit the water, you can barely move, because the water is cold and you're in shock.
When a person boats, it's hard not to get caught up in the scene."You can see the shore, it's beautiful, you can get caught up in the color of the
water and the dolphins and the birds, and you feel so much a part of all of it. If you get caught up in the wonder, you forget this place can also kill
you." The story, Rogue Wave, is a good example of that. Two Florida teens were boating and it was a beautiful day. Out of nowhere the wall of water

Giant Butterflies Symbolism
Vladimir Kush on his beautiful oil canvas has depicted a three–masted sailing ship heading out to the open sea on a windy day. The ship is very
different than your everyday sailing ship what strike out most is the giant butterflies that form the sails on the ship; it's as if these butterflies are
catching the heavy wind that is blowing out into the sea. The conditions on the sea look fairly calm but the sea looks wavy and moving clouds show
us the strong wind that is carrying the ship out. People on the shore are seen holding windsock as an indication to show the strength of the wind.
People are also seen wind surfing across the seashore and there too butterfly wings have taken over the place of traditional sails.
The beautiful painting is a visual treat to anyone laying eyes on it. The blue sky the wavy water the sailboats all are ironic to any coastal shore. The
moon on the distance is an indication that it's early dusk or dawn. The sea looks windswept but calm and clear rather than stormy and angry. The ship
is setting out on a long journey but the butterflies are an indication to a positive spin on departure so it's probably intended for people who have had or
will have firsthand experience with departure and those emotions.
Winged ship is portrayed to bring in a calming and cheering effect. And Kush has used his imagination to depict the painting; he has used pure
imagination in creating winged ship. And a lot is dependent on the kind of condition that he was born in,

Natalie Watkins Analysis

  • 1. Natalie Watkins Analysis Natalie Watkins is a promising young artist born in Stockton, Ca. She began to study art at an early age, and over the years has established herself as profound human being. She considers her style of painting as a contemporary, and her works range from gender and sexuality to social and political issues. Her art is showcased in cafes and small venues throughout Stockton, Ca. The untitled painting, which is one of her early works, is painted in dark colors of grey and black portraying a figure sitting alone on a dark and stormy night. The figure sits in the pouring rain in the middle of a street watching a small sailboat, something similar to an old fashion pirate boat, float away down the gutter. The artist hides most of the person including their face from the view with a large umbrella. Most of the colors are in black and grey with the exception of the figures sweater, which is in a bright yellow and the water which is painted in blue and white. What do I notice from the paintings is a figure sitting all alone amidst a rainy storm as if he or she awaits change at a turning point in their life. The starkness of the painting shows the figures emotions and feelings are strong and yet there is always sunshine after the rain. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The image shows a sailing ship, it could be an optimistic view of the painter expressing their particular direction of their goals and how we make choices in life. Or goals that are merely drifting away because it is difficult to get what we want out of life at times. Also sailing away could be a form of independence and freedom were we wish to break free from the constraints of everything we do in our daily lives. sailing on stormy waters depicts the difficulty of our choices and that things might be tough going forward. Or simply the strong desire to change life symbolizing the positive changes of our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Pros And Cons Of Christopher Columbus In 1492, Christopher Columbus began the voyage that would earn him the name as the most successful failure in modern history. Columbus began his voyage as a Spanish explorer seeking a new trade route to the East Indies with two caravels and one flagship. Additionally, Columbus armed his fleet with eighty–eight crewmen. Columbus arrived at his supposed destination in approximately three months after he first set sail in Spain. Columbus' arrival on land marked a monumental stepping stone for European nations, Columbus had discovered the new world. Without a doubt, Christopher Columbus experienced difficulties on his voyage due to his lack of access to modern technological tools. Christopher Columbus would have most benefited from better ships, weather gauging tools, and any form of communication. Therefore, if Christopher Columbus had the resources available today, perhaps he would have landed in his desired destination and the decimation of native civilizations may have been prevented. Christopher Columbus crossed the oceans in three ships that were ill–suited for the voyage across the Atlantic. For example, these explorers were archaic compared to the technology of new ships of the 20th century. In fact, the ships Columbus used could sail up to eight knots in speed which led to the slow trek across the sea (Christopher Columbus Ship). Today's ships can travel up to twenty–five knots (Are Modern Ships Slower Than Sailing Ships? Probably Not). Columbus would have arrived ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On Ship Of Theseus I think that the Ship of Theseus is an interesting idea. Every summer since 2002, my family has gone to Hale Reservation. About ten years ago, I began to take sailing lessons there, and I continued to take them until I started working there two years ago. Then, I started teaching some of the lessons. During my time at Hale, many of the parts of the sailboats have changed. They are constantly switched between the different boats. All of the sailboats are very old, and the parts break frequently, or sometimes they are just lost. I remember about five years ago, one of the ropes fell off and sank. This is just one of the many parts that has needed to be replaced. I never realized how frequently the pieces broke, until I had to figure out what they needed to buy so the boats would work. Although the parts of the boat themselves are always different, I stillfeel that they are still the same as when I started taking sailing lessons there. I feel that they are the same as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When I started going there, I was just a little kid. As I have grown up, Hale has changed. The things I liked to do there, and the people that worked there are two of the noticeable things to me, and every year they are at least slightly different. Many of the lifeguards that I really liked don't work there anymore. I know next year, assuming I work there again, will be very different. My brother had worked there for the last seven years, and for the two years that I work there, he was the head lifeguard. It is going to be strange with him not there, since he just graduated college and isn't going to be back. In the fifteen years of going to Hale, he was always been there, either with my family, or working there. Everything at Hale is changing. I thought it was kind of weird a couple years ago when someone who used to work at Hale and taught me sailing lessons had to ask me if they could use one of the sailboats. This really made me realize how much things had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Golden Age Of Piracy Pirate, privateer, Cosarios luteranos, and buccaneer are all names given to skilled ocean–sailing vigilantes that survived off of goods they plundered from others. Pirates drastically altered life in the Caribbean. They controlled both the islands and the sea during the 1500's, which is accurately nicknamed "The Golden Age of Piracy." Begining with British Protestants, piracy spread throughout the New World like wild fire. Notorious criminals in search of wealth overseas, known as pirates, lived harsh lives and left a major impact on Caribbean history. Many factors led to the outbreak of piracy in the Caribbean. Conflicts in activities of everyday life, such as religion, were motives for pirates. Inspired by Martin Luther's 95 Theses, King Henry VIII split ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although there were thousands of pirates throughout the Caribbean, several were notoriously skilled in the trade, such as Jack Rackham. Also known as Calico Jack due to his preference for cheap and brightly colored clothes, Rackham succeeded in attacking many smaller vessels that were abundant in treasures. However, his expertise in piracy is not the only thing he is famous for. The relationship between Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, and Marry Reed is one of the most popular stories about the pirates of the Caribbean. Anne Bonny was married to John Bonny, who introduced her to the pirate life in New providence, Bahamas. She quickly became uninterested in her marriage and involved with Calico Jack. Bonny began disguising herself as a man and sailing the seas with Rackham and his crew. Mary Read chose the pirate life, as well. Similar to Bonny, "Mark" Read disguised herself as a male because she knew life of a man was far easier than the life of a woman in their time. Bonny became attracted to Read and both revealed her true gender. Rumor states that the two women were lovers and involved in a "love triangle" with Calico Jack, but there is no evidence to justify this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. MAT222 Week 3 Paper Radical Formulas MAT 222 Intermediate Algebra Yelena Vaynberg August 11, 2013 Radical Formulas This week we learned about Radical Formulas and how this can be applied in our everyday lives. Radicals seem very complicated at first, but because we have learned so much already, it is just taking what we already know and apply it to the problem that we have been assigned. I have been asked to work a problem 103 and 104 on pages 605 and 606 of our math book Elementary and Intermediate Algebra. We are going to break out each step to show how we came to our answer. By breaking out our problems, we will have a better understanding of the solving radical formulas. We will start working problem 103 on page ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a boat with a displacement of d pounds and a sail area of A square feet S is determined by the function S = 16Ad–2/3. a) Find S to the nearest tenth for the Tartan 4100, which has a sail area of 810 square feet and a displacement of 23,245 pounds. b) Write d in terms of A and S . Step one Starting with our formula. Step two Here we have plugged in the values into our formula. When solving we do order of operations first and we will solve exponents first. Step three Complete the multiplication Step four This is our solution

Step five The (16A)3/2 has became the reciprocal to the 3/2 power Step six Here is the solution for d. To conclude we showed how use the Radical Formulas in each problem that we were working. We broke out each step so that we would have a better time understanding how one would answer this question. We have shown our work in hopes that other will be able to follow these same steps to find their solutions. We now have a better understanding of the Radical Formulas. Reference: Dugopolski, M. • 7. Essay On South Floria South Florida's ascendancy to the epicenter of the cruise industry began long before the modern cruise lines were born. Early in the twentieth century, a group of daring visionaries and entrepreneurs began to dream of expanding the local business community and creating new industries to take advantage of Florida's climate with its sunshine and warmth. Chief among these businesses they envisioned a winter tourism trade but to realize this dream they would require a strong transportation infrastructure. The coastal shipping trade along the United States' East Coast helped to bring the first visitors to Florida spurred on by the growing railroad empires developed by Henry Flagler and Henry B. Plant. By the 1890s, these railroad tycoons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then in 1913, the Plant Line, now owned by Flagler's Peninsular & Occidental Steamship Company (P&O), decided to send its new 3,786–ton steamer the ss Evangeline on winter pleasure cruises. But, instead of sailing from the new ports, she cruised from Key West calling at Panama, Jamaica, and Cuba. The following winter the cruises were repeated but this time sailing from Jacksonville. All the remained was to link these new cruise efforts with the emerging South Florida ports. After World War I, a flourishing trade developed with steamers such as the 1,700 gross ton ss City of Miami and the 3,200 gross ton ss Northland, maintaining overnight runs between Miami and Havana. However, sensing that the ports still lacked a proper infrastructure to maintain the shipping industry, the first of many efforts began to improve the facilities. In Miami, a US$3 million project was undertaken in 1925 to dredge and widen the channel. Similarly, to the north, the Mayor of Hollywood was the driving force for a US$6 million project to deepen the harbor inlet, widen the turning basin and build modern 35–foot piers at Bay Mable. Completed early in 1928, it is said that more than 85 percent of the residents of Broward County turned out to witness the dedication of their new port. At the same time, local women's groups led successful efforts to replace the unpopular Bay Mable Harbor name which what they thought would be a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Personal Narrative Essay : My Family Camp I decided to write about my family camp, this camp is for special needs (like for my brother). In general that was the only the second overnight camp I've been to, so it was really fun. We did many activities like fishing, kayaking and much more. At that camp I met many of my old friends that been to that camp for the second time, we would have much a fun time together. In the afternoon we would go sailing fishing and do campfires. The worst part of this whole family camp is that we have to drive there. The drive was 3 hours long but it felt like forever, I felt like throwing up because I have motion sickness, we stopped a lot during the car ride for washroom breaks and to get candy. We finally arrived atthe camp, some staff led us to our cabin (cabin loon), we then listened to "sell the sizzle" (what activities there are the next day, and we ate dinner. The next day I would see my friends that came last year. When the day started, we did the activities we chose. During break and bonding time my friends and I would do some fishing, sailing and swimming. Something ridiculous we would do is that we would ask the staff if we were allowed to flip the sailboat, and the staff would let us because they "knew for sure" it's not possible to flip. A reason we were allowed to do these things is because one of my friends is the son of the nurse working there. Back to the topic, every day when we went sailing, we would try to tip the boat over but only manage to get some water in. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are also other kinds of ships that pirates use like Naval ships, Cargo ships, and Transportation ships. First of all, Naval ships have lots of armor and cannons for protection, like an Ironclad with iron frames for protection from cannons and other fire power from enemy ships. The Brig and Panstership are both huge Naval ships. Also a fire ship was a ship filled with TNT that could be lighted and used to destroy other ships. The Corvette was a lightly armed warship, also Cutters were fast warships. The Sloop–of–War has 18 cannons. • 10. Crossroads Fishing Derby Case Summary landed a catfish, which catapulted the sales department to victory in the first annual Crossroads Fishing Derby. Despite all the obvious obstacles and the change in leadership the true hotel servers managed to bring a smile to everyone's face. Of course Japes and Bombay thought the trophy should go to the largest fish, but that would have to be taken under advisement by the fishing committee. It was an uphill battle for poor Bombay as he truly was a server on his own. The Crossroads Hotel was not a financial windfall for the owners as the economy had eroded and this tertiary market was only a shadow of what it had been in its day. Japes forged the best relationship he could with a boss that was three thousand miles away and rarely visited the property. How do you quantify the attitude and feelings of hundreds of servers that barely scrape enough money together to pay their bills to bean counters that only relate to numbers? Even Shekelhound who was a bean counter himself would visit with and get to know the operational servers. The hotel was forced to cut back on any event that would cost money and not give a direct return. This included limiting the employee luncheons to once per quarter and the annual holiday party expenditure to less then two thousand dollars. The owners would also put on a wage freeze for nearly two years while escalating the server's expense for healthcare and other basic needs. Scrooge used to make an annual visit but would never be seen on property again as he pushed his agenda of inequality and disrespect. • 11. Descriptive Essay About Microcosm Humanity delights in escaping reality even if only for a short time. Some choose to play sports, some watch tv, and others still choose to spend their time reading. Withdrawal from reality links all hobbies together. Likewise, I like to achieve this liberation by sailing. Imagine the wind gusting across your body, the smell of the strong scent of water in your nostrils, and the thrill of the wind thrusting your boat along. I was astounded when I discovered this microcosm twenty minutes away in the middle of the scorching desert. Immediately upon exiting the car, I am greeted by the familiar telltale smell of the lake. It is a combination of a fishy and algae scent that isn't overly pleasant, nevertheless, it doesn't detract from the experience. On nice windy days, I felt the wind blow through my hair and saw the telltale whitecaps forming on the water's surface. On sunny days I saw the afternoon sun make the greenish–brown water glimmer majestically and reflect off of the glass in the high rise buildings. I walked to the gated boatyard adjacent to the parking lot to retrieve my boat. I walked just beyond the middle of the yard to the section where the boats for my class were stored. I picked one that appeared to be in good shape and pushed it out of the yard towards the lake. If I had luck on my side a friend would also help me with this, nonetheless, it is an easy job on the way out of the yard because the exit is sloped slightly down hill. After I removed the boat from the boatyard, The instructor would either tell me to help someone transport another boat out of the boatyard After all the boats were out and ready to be rigged, the instructor would tell the other students and me to start rigging the boats. Normally, I take about ten minutes to rig a boat myself and five with help from a friend. It is a pretty simple process and involves checking the boat for any damage, making sure the drain plug is screwed in tight, and hoisting the sails halfway up. Next, the instructor launches the boats with his truck and I rushed to the boat to prepare it to sail. I would lower the keel and rudder, raise the sails to the top of the mast. At last, I was sailing. When I first set the sail and feel the wind just start ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Vasa Gunship Catastrophe Introduction In 1626, the Swedish gunship, Vasa, was constructed for war against Poland. King Gustav II of Sweden spared no expense and demanded the ship be the grandest, most prestigious watercraft ever created. His demand was fulfilled, however due to continuous design changes, inadequate communication , and a stringent timeline, the ship was poorly constructed. As a result, Vasa sunk after sailing only 1,000 yards, perishing 50 men and all of the war supplies. 1.Who is responsible for this catastrophe? In this case, it is difficult to blame one individual for the Vasa catastrophe because several decision–makers were involved. Still, King Gustav's numerous design alterations complicated construction and pressured decision–makers into accommodating his irrational demands. Additionally, King Gustav did not communicate well with the shipbuilders, admiral, and seamen, and instead solely concentrated on outshining other ships. Therefore, his lacking leadership and communication created confusion and stress, which trickled down and ultimately led to the failure. 2.Were there any inappropriate risks that should not have been taken? How can these be identified and mitigated on future shipbuilding initiatives? During construction, there were several inappropriate risks taken. For example, time was not invested into accurately drawing engineering plans that accommodated the King's requests to increase the size of the keel and number of guns. It can also help them learn more about the ocean and the different things in the ocean. But, many things could go wrong while they are sailing and no one can help them, they could die or go missing forever! If a teen goes sailing by themselves or with few friends, they could go missing somewhere in the ocean and no one could find them. The World Of The Redemptora Construction At the time of the Redemptora construction, its pre–industrial design as a full–rigged wooden ship could still accomplish the new demands of the emerging markets worldwide, notwithstanding new technological changes on the horizon caused by a crescent industrialism. By this time new experiments with auxiliary propulsion of ships had already been carried out for many years and resulted in improved steam engines and propellers. Both steam and sailing ships were subjected to improvements and innovative construction methods, such as composite hulls (of which the Cutty Sark is a famous example), and later iron/steel. Although steamships had already been present in sea transportation for decades, they were still used in relatively short and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, it was the relative ease of wooden construction methods and cheap propulsion (wind), that would make the wooden sailing ship still attractive even in the last decades of the 19th century. All that was needed was a suitable location, close to water, a constant and large supply of wood and human power under the command of experienced carpenters. For repairs, wooden ships had also advantages as they could be carried out on board whenever possible, and this is why carpenter's presence on board had always been vital. If the need for large repairs were needed, they could be done in smaller shipyards, still common in those days. (Greenhill 1993a, 24–26). When compared to iron shipbuilding, The Achilles' heel of wood building technology was the limited length of ships that could be built and above all the demand for careful maintenance. An additional defect of such large wooden vessels was their structural flexibility making them ill–suited to steam propulsion and propellers in particular. As their age increased they had a tendency to hog and drop at the extremities with the possibility of disintegrating into their constituent parts. These details prevented the installation of propellers as auxiliary or main propulsion on board, a problem solved only with the development of the iron hull (Greenhill 1993b, 21–22). This story tells the fascinating tale, in the form of never sent letters, of an ape brought aboard an iron–hulled sailing ship in 1909 by Samson Low, the ship's captain. Although the author makes a point to tell the reader, through Samson Low, that the animal does not symbolize anything or mean anything, in fact, "He stands for nothing" (280), several arguments can be made to contradict this. One could argue that the ape symbolized the untamed and rarely used wild side of Samson Low through a comparison of their personalities, appearances, and the way they are treated by others. When Samson offers his hand to the creature, "In imitation, he put out his arm, looking much less fearsome." (277). The captain and the ape act as if they are communicating on a different, more primitive level. At times, the crew's behavior is primitive as well. Their reactions change throughout the story. At first they fear the ape as a wild creature until the captain "tames' him. "The crew has divide into two factions–those who wish to have the monkey shot, and those who would В… put him in his boat". (274). Because they do not understand him they wish to be rid of him. Just then, the other two ships began to sail away, but one cannonball proceeded towards one ship, and struck the ship leaving it to sink. Initially used by the Arabs and later adopted by the Europeans whom combined the lateen sail with other technologies, such as the compass, opened up trade opportunities and improved skills such as mapmaking. The lateen sail was triangular and would allow for maximum sail. The lateen sail was faster than previous inventions, expediting travel and trade. Additionally, the lateen sail could be combined with bigger hulls and rigs, allowing sailors to navigate open water. • 29. The Discovery Of The New World Ship Improvements What were the events and improvements in ship design that lead to the discovery of the New World and enabled the subsequent expansion in global trade? In this paper I will examine the changes and improvements in European ship design that allowed for the first transatlantic voyage to the New World. Though the Europeans were not the first to develop the concept of the ship, they were the first to take this concept and use it to cross the Atlantic. Even before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic to the New World, Europe had a long maritime history. Before the 15th and 16th century European ship design had been relatively slow to advance from its initial stages. But during the 15th and 16th century European ship design accelerated at break neck speeds to advance to the point of enabling the Age of Exploration. Dr. Edwards states, "The major difference in father oceanic sailing was the length of the voyages between landfalls. Longer voyages meant larger crews to man watches through twenty–four hours, the need to carry larger stores of food, wood and water, and the need for more spare equipment such as anchors and cables, sails, line for rigging, lumber, metal work and gear for all kinds of repairs at sea or on distant shores where such things are unavailable"(Edwards. 443). To accomplish this feat many improvements were required on earlier ship designs that were used in maritime activities along the coast of Europe and in the Mediterranean. Though ... • 32. The True Confession Of Charlotte Doyle Analysis In Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Zachariah, an old black man and the cook on the Seahawk, tells Charlotte, "A sailor chooses the wind that takes the ship from safe port...but winds have a mind of their own". These wise words prove true in both literal and more symbolic ways. In The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi, Charlotte Doyle is a young student from a well–to–do family who finds herself on a ship full of men and a mysterious captain who seems to be the right person to stick with but proves himself not to be. Charlotte must find her own wind to blow her ship when everything seems to fall apart for her on the ship. Charlotte realized that there was nobody on her side after the incident when Charlotte told the captain about the mutiny and then accidentally whipped the captain's face, so she decided to take charge without the help of someone else. Charlotte decided to take charge and join the crew, "'I've come,' I managed to say, 'to be one of the crew.'" (pg. 106). Charlotte decided to take charge of her own life like a true sailor by choosing her own wind. Even though Charlotte had chosen the best "wind" and done the right thing, the wind she chose wasn't an easy one; she still had sort of a hard time with the captain and she even ended up being charged of murder. Charlotte decided to choose her own wind to sail her ship, or make her own choice when she realized that she was all alone with nobody on her side. At the end of the book, Charlotte knew that she had to go back to her old life, but she still felt reluctant to return. She said on pg. 199 about putting on her old clothes, "To my surprise I felt so much pinched and confined I found it difficult to breathe. I glanced at my trunk where I had secreted my sailor's garb as a tattered memento. For a moment I considered changing back to that, but quickly reminded myself that it must– from then on– remain a memento." Charlotte had to change back the proper lady she once had been, but because she had had a taste of what it was like to be free as a sailor, she felt confined when she put on her old clothes. • 33. Benefits Of A Successful Junior Optimist Training Program Introduction There is such a "spiritual joy" in being out on the water, the unwanted spray on your face, eyes squinting, the feeling of rope in your bare hands. Learning to sail has its own "thrills and also brings with it a sense of accomplishment" . Sailing is slowly emerging as a popular sport and is attracting young children from the ages 7 and most continue into their late 20's. Living in Port Lincoln defiantly has its disadvantages, as being such a small remote, and rural town, young talented sailors miss out on the training, programs and recognition that they need to further their career. Many larger cities have government run programs to teach young interested children to learn how to sail and by researching 'how to create a successful junior Optimist learn to sail program' I hope I can attract more young children to our waters, and to take up the sport of sailing. History of sailing Two thirds of the world's surface is covered by water, and the majority of people "live near or close to the coast and have done so for a millennia" . The striving of man to explore the world beyond the horizon has always been present and through the introduction of sailing in Holland in the late 17th Century, vessels carried people further offshore than ever before . For thousands of years, the wind was the only source of energy that would allow man to travel long distances over the seven seas, such as the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. Many people doubted the idea of sailing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Storms aren't the cause of most sailing crashes; it is the calmness that is dangerous (Lochhaas 1). The saying 'the calm before the storm' might have actually been made for sailors. Jessica wanted waves to come so she could learn and do something exciting. Many people were right in the danger side of sailing what they failed to realize was the type of danger. Sailing has been part of Jessica's life since she can remember and sailing has been around since mankind can remember. Having her home on the water was not the only reason Jessica fell in love with sailing, it was also the people who had sailed before her. Kay Cottee has been a role model for her since she started. Kay Cottee has made history in the world of sailing achievements––the first woman to sail around the world solo, unassisted and without stopping (Mundle 1). Cottee wanting to become the first woman to accomplish this must have been a steep uphill battle. Sailing has been a male dominant sport since the middle ages so Cottee is living proof that Jessica could do it too. Along with Cottee, Jesse Martin influenced Jessica in a dramatic way. Ships are generally distinguished from boats based on size and cargo or passenger capacity. Ships are used on lakes, seas, and rivers for a variety of activities, such as the transport of people or goods, fishing, entertainment, public safety, and warfare. Historically, a "ship" was a vessel with sails rigged in a specific manner. Ships and boats have developed alongside humanity. This difficulty is increased by the fact that the terms such as sloop and frigate are used by old and new ships alike, and often the modern vessels sometimes have little in common with their predecessors. Today In 2007, the world's fleet included 34,882 commercial vessels with gross tonnage of more than 1,000 tons,[42] totaling 1.04 billion tons.[1] These ships carried 7.4 billion tons of cargo in 2006, a sum that grew by 8% over the previous year.[1] In terms of tonnage, 39% of these ships are tankers, 26% arebulk carriers, 17% container ships and 15% were other types.[1] In 2002, there were 1,240 warships operating in the world, not counting small vessels such as patrol boats. The United States accounted for 3 million tons worth of these vessels, Russia 1.35 million tons, the United Kingdom 504,660 tons and China 402,830 tons. The 20th century saw many naval engagements during the two world wars, the Cold War, and the rise to power of naval forces of the two blocs. The size of the world's fishing fleet is more difficult to estimate. The largest of these are counted as commercial vessels, but the smallest are legion.Fishing vessels can be found in most seaside villages in the world. As a result, the historical significance of the industry can be assigned to one of the few industries that managed to aid in successfully contributing to the development of the national identity. From this, the shipbuilding industry as a whole must be detailed in order to directly correspond its long–lasting effects through its actions. • 39. The Ship Poem Within The Ship Starting, there are three notable instances of repetition. For one, the word "ship" occurs three times (including in the title). Given that ships are the topic of interest in the poem, this instance of repetition has the basic effect of bringing the locus of the text back to the title, or central theme. The second example can be observed in the second and third lines, where the word "sails" is followed by "moonsails," a made–up compound version of the former word. Using the same word twice, and in this case, by adding on and modifying its second appearance, the reader is likely to acquire a clear picture of the scene that Whitman lays out in the poem. Emphasizing the image of the ship's "sails" by preceding the words with diction such as "all" and "even" attributes the sails to a sense of abundance or freedom. The third instance of repetition occurs in line four, where "she speeds she speeds" is used to describe the motions that the ship is making. Whereas it would be considered grammatically correct to include a comma after the first mention of "she speeds," leaving it out better reflects the content of the poem: "she speeds she speeds" gives the impression of a ship slicing through the water quickly. In many cases, using the same word twice in a row takes away from a text's message, but in The Ship Starting, this repetition instead works in Whitman's favor by supporting the visual imagery he seeks to create. Walt Whitman's The Ship Starting is a poem that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"Should I send a teenager who has no experience with crisis out into the largest wilderness in the world, completely surrounded on all sides by something that will kill them if they get in it?" Teens should not sail because even though you can see the surface of the water, you don't know what lies beneath. The water can be calm, but at the same time can be vicious. The boaters passed the boating test, but the test doesn't put you in a real–life crisis. "Teenagers can spend years on the water and still be emotionally and mentally unprepared to deal with emergency situations." Even though they might be prepared physically, they might not be emotionally. For example when you hit the water, you can barely move, because the water is cold and you're in shock. When a person boats, it's hard not to get caught up in the scene."You can see the shore, it's beautiful, you can get caught up in the color of the water and the dolphins and the birds, and you feel so much a part of all of it. If you get caught up in the wonder, you forget this place can also kill you." The story, Rogue Wave, is a good example of that. Two Florida teens were boating and it was a beautiful day. • 41. Giant Butterflies Symbolism Vladimir Kush on his beautiful oil canvas has depicted a three–masted sailing ship heading out to the open sea on a windy day. The ship is very different than your everyday sailing ship what strike out most is the giant butterflies that form the sails on the ship; it's as if these butterflies are catching the heavy wind that is blowing out into the sea. The conditions on the sea look fairly calm but the sea looks wavy and moving clouds show us the strong wind that is carrying the ship out. The moon on the distance is an indication that it's early dusk or dawn. The sea looks windswept but calm and clear rather than stormy and angry. The ship is setting out on a long journey but the butterflies are an indication to a positive spin on departure so it's probably intended for people who have had or will have firsthand experience with departure and those emotions. Winged ship is portrayed to bring in a calming and cheering effect. And Kush has used his imagination to depict the painting; he has used pure imagination in creating winged ship. And a lot is dependent on the kind of condition that he was born in, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
