Mcnay Art Museum
Museums and Gallery Paper Thidavary Khus Redbud Group I chose to virtually re explore the McNay
Art Museum which has been a part of history here in San Antonio as an endowment of founder
Marion Koogler McNay. The McNay was noted as being the first museum of modern art in Texas.
From the first modern oil painting, Diego Rivera s Delfina Flores to over 20,000 works, the museum

well as Southwest art from New Mexico.. The historic building designed by San Antonian architects

In January 2012 as he investigated the challenges in the current production process, he met most of
key departments and work centres by touring the factory.
Industry Overview
Bayonne Packaging, Inc is in the paper packaging industry. In the 1980s and early 1990s companies in
the consumer goods industry start to look for a greater impact with their promotional materials and
star to implement their promotional budget to the package itself instead of print media and broadcast
forms. This led to a rapidly growth on the paper packaging industry. Also, additional customer market
segments made a quick impact in a crowded marketplace due to the explosive growth of software
packaging. These factors give good reason for the growth in sales from 10 million in 1982 to 32
million in 2001.
New challenges were faced with the bursting of the dot com bubble and when software sales and
distribution moved from CDs to the Internet, but Bayonne dealt well this challenges by adopting a
strategy of diversification into new markets.
Process Analysis
To make some recommendations concerning the production process of Bayonne Inc., we need to do
the process analysis, in order to be able to closer understand how the production flows through the
different work centres work and what kind of problems and inefficiencies arise from this process.

Gender In Canterbury Tales
The roles and expectations that coincide with gender are displayed in Jeffrey Eugenides Middlesex.
By chronicling Cal Stephanides family history, Eugenides displays the continual and generational
disconnect between sex and gender. As his focus shifts from one generation to the next, this
disconnect becomes more clear and prevalent, making gender identity an increasingly fluid concept. In
literature, a similar shift can be seen as eras and periods pass, reflecting the ideas within those time
periods regarding gender and sex and how they change. This including various texts from the Ancient
Period, Medieval Period, Renaissance Period, and Age of Reason such as the story of Lilith from The
Alphabet of Ben Sira, Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, Baldassare Castiglione s The
Courtier, and To the Fair Clarinda by Aphra Behn. Constantly evolving, gender has become less
defined by one s biological sex, and more so determined by personal comfortability either within or
outside of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Wife of Bath s Prologue and The Clerk s Tale show what the ideal woman and man were as
opposed to the flawed an undesirable versions of women and men. Despite Chaucer utilizing Griselda
as a cautionary tale against blind submission and succumbence by exaggerating her traits, she still
represents the ideal woman of the Medieval Period. Griselda is a virtuous, fair young woman admired
by all. Her husband, Walter, puts her through intense emotional distress by telling her to sacrifice her
children, and she complies so she can remain loyal to him. She remains affable, [meeting guests] so
cheerfully... with so much skill... that none could find a fault in how she treated them despite her inner
affliction (Chaucer 350). The ideal Medieval woman is submissive, loyal, affable, beautiful, and
virtuous under any circumstance, just as Griselda

The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
To begin with, Poe has carefully tailored the narrative in a manner to fit the theory of single effect.
The unnamed narrator suggests that his main job is to narrate. His logical treatment and explanation of
what happens throughout the story adds plausibility and credibility to the narrator. Darrel Abel
described the narrator as Anthropos for he, the narrator, remains uncharacterized, undescribed and
even unnamed (177). Although the reader does not know much about him, the attention is fully drawn
instead to the strangeness in the House of Usher and the horror tour inside the house. Poe builds a
strong connection between the narrator and the reader, The reader represents Poe s ideal narrator, and
Poe s narrator represents his ideal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Poe s psychological approach to the story makes the connection between the reader and the narrator
stronger and shows the strategy that Poe adopted in conveying the feelings from the text into the
reader s mind. Thus, what the reader experiences in the process of reading the text reveals exactly
what happens to the narrator. In return, what happens to the narrator suggests the process the reader
undergoes in the reading of Poe s story: The reader becomes an active mediator containing the
psychological effects of the story s utterance, so the narrator s imagination records a series of
psychological effects that constitute the action of Poe s text (Bieganowski 178).
The second element that Poe dedicates to achieving unity of effect is setting. Much of the horror in
The Fall of the House of Usher is achieved through its gloomy setting. The story opens with a grim
start: During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds
hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly
dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view
of the melancholy House of Usher (Poe 117).
Poe wastes no time putting the reader in front of the image of an eerie, old mansion. As a result, the
reader will soon be aware of a sense of death and decay. Poe s setting plants the seed of horror

Miriam Makeba Research Paper
Miriam Makeba influenced Texas by singing about civil rights and keeping her stature while being
exiled from her country. Life on it s own has its hardships, but imagine facing discrimination from
your home country and countries around the world. Makeba faced an innumerable amount of
hardships, yet still stayed true to her roots. She stood on her beliefs and never backed down.
Biography.jranks.org claims, Makeba faced conflict from the moment she was born. She served a six
month term at the age of two and a half weeks (Bigelow and Pendergast). Liptrott writes Makeba s

Makeba initially left South Africa to further her career and explore the world. Makeba said, If I had
not left South Africa, I do not think anything would have came out of it, and that is one of the reasons
why I left. There was no scope for me there as a black entertainer. In 1958, the South African
government passed a law where no blacks could perform in the cities. Anti apartheid songs are not
allowed to be sold or played on the radio. My songs have been banned since 1962 (youtube.com). She
sang in welcoming countries, while still relaying her message to the people in South Africa. During
Makeba s career, there were strict rules concerning racial inequality in Africa (apartheid). Gaylord
notes Makeba left the country to pursue her career in other countries, but soon felt regret when her
mother passed away and was denied access into South Africa (csmonitor.com). Makeba says, I never
knew they were going to stop me from coming back (csmonitor.com). Makeba was exiled from her

Byron Vs Poe
Poe and Byron are masterful at using vivid descriptive language to develop the elements of Gothic
literature and instill a sense of fear in the reader. Poe and Byron both used a dark, creepy setting in
their novels. Poe had his story set in a crypt, and Byron had his story set in a dungeon. Both of the
novels had at least one individual chained up in a deep, isolated, underground structure. In The Cask
of Amontillado Monstresor buried up his lifelong rival while he was chained up to a wall screaming,
and thrashing the chains he was on. In The Prisoner of Chillon it is three silent prisoners chained up
on a column in a dungeon where they couldn t see each other, or move at all. One example of Gothic
literature in The Cask of Amontillado

Why I Chose Law School
Since I was 11 years old, I knew that I wanted to go to law school. When I finally started college, I
majored on Criminal Justice thinking that that was what I needed to study to prepare for law school,
but after many conversations with professors, advisors, including attorneys, I decided to change my
major to Liberal Arts instead. As a Spanish speaking individual, I realized that in order to reach my
goal of preparing for law school, I needed to improve my English. Since then, I have taken courses
that I believe has helped me to improve my English. Since I started college, I have been planning my
pathway to law school. This is why, when I was the Student Trustee in my second year of college, I
contacted our First District Attorney Paul Caccaviello to see if I could do a work study at his office. I
was able to work with him for two semesters. I would read ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

interpreted for them and other members of CPCS whenever they needed a Spanish interpreter. I
focused mainly on a rape case. I went to the local correctional facility with Attorney Green every
week to interpret for him and his Spanish speaking client. I was grateful to be part of this case because
I was able to learn more about rape laws, immigration laws, sentencing guidelines, how discretion is
used, and how an investigation is conducted. The fact that the only way that Attorney Green was able
to speak with his client was through a Spanish interpreter made me realize how crucial it is to have a

2.3.2 Combining the two: CST and Online Heuristic
Online Heuristic standalone. The problem with implementing the online heuristic standalone is we
need a set of K initial seed clusters so that the incoming edges can fall into the five cases with equal
probability. But if the online heuristic is applied with empty clusters, then most of the floating in edges
fall in CASE 1 i.e. making a new cluster, then we will have large number of clusters with single edges.
Then after the total number of clusters exceed the number of clusters threshold then the further edges
that fall in CASE 1 will be dropped, resulting in loss of many edges.
Online Heuristic with CST. To solve the above problem, we initially make the seed clusters with the
existing nodes/users using CST and once we have formed K equal size coherent clusters, we switch to
Online Heuristic for real time performance.
Note that the initial K seed clusters can be generated using any offline graph partitioning

Journal Entries About Amyasian Whale Hunt
Dear Journal, Yesterday was the great Amyasian whale hunt. Today as I lay in bed waiting for these
cursed wounds to heal I will tell you about it.
It was the 14th of Frost Fall, The sun was shining as the men waited for the vessel Vlad and I built, it
was a mighty ship, three masts, 150 feet long and able to hold a crew of 50 plus a cargo hold big
enough for the crew and the whales.
The ship came around as the men all jumped up in awe, cheering with excitement, Altiak De Bar
cheering the loudest knowing he will gain more power through the loyalty of the men after this trip, as
I looked back the ship was already dropping anchor and sending the skifs to the beach to pick us up.
we all loaded in and got to the boat. After about 30 minutes we were all aboard heading out the sea for
whales, I stood at the stern of the ship watching and everyone milled about sorting harpoons, fixing
the rigging and some just lazing about eating or drinking the ale we brought with us.
Suddenly the port side of the boat grew loud with the voices of the ... Show more content on

sword but luckly it stayed in its sccabbard, as our whale went skyward, being carried by a huge black

whale had 20 or more harpoons in it that are attached to the ship, The whale came plummeting back
down as the beach screeched with annoyance, I realizing that the beast was going to try again, and this
time the ship might get torn in half as it tries to break the whale free, so I grabbed a harpoon and
jumpped overboard. The cold hit and almost knocked the wind out of me, but I knew if I failed, the
entire ship would sink and a lot of men would die, so I swam for the

Persuasive Essay On Same Sex Adoption
One day I was looking out my window, watching my boys play. I started thinking about how they are
the future of the world. They are the engineers, presidents, congressman, businessman, and lawyers of
tomorrow. Later that day, I saw a news article discussing the issue of same sex adoption. As I watched
I thought to myself, where did we forget that it was about the kids? So, out of curiosity, I began to
look up some statistics about kids that have no homes, the ones that are waiting for good families. I
started wondering if it is about the kids, then why, do we care about same sex adoptions at all. There
are two sides to the argument of same sex adoption, and to really get a feel for the issue you must
understand both sides. However, the two sides of the discussion are not entirely complicated although
the reasons are. One side supports same sex adoption and the other side opposes same sex adoption.
Both sides agree that what they want is what s best for the kids. ... Show more content on

We need to look at the facts regarding kids in foster care, and those facts are the statistics for foster
care. These statistics include the number of children currently coming into foster care, compared to the
number that exit foster care, and what the legalization of same sex adoption would do to those
numbers. Since what everyone wants is what s best for the children, you have to look at the studies of
how, if at all, same sex adoption affects children. The last thing we need to address would be the
public opinions of same sex adoption. This includes religious and moral beliefs and the political ideas,
as this is where the policies will be addressed and decisions made to change the laws around same sex

The Invasion Of Nazi Germany
The invasion and subsequent takeover of France during World War II by Nazi Germany was a multi
pronged attack that was built on a combination of swift and prolonged attacks of psychologic and
combative violence. Psychological violence was the Nazi s intentional erosion of French identity,
values, sense of community and morality. The spread of information through newspapers and radios
was crucial to the morality and organization of the people and the Resistance and thus a primary target
of the Nazis. Germany pulled the puppet strings of the Vichy Regime to manipulate society
particularly through the use of the preexisting police force while gradually modifying the logic and
focus of the force for their own gains. The combative violence of ... Show more content on

But such wide spread death across different strata of society brewed hatred and distrust among the
general public. This destroyed any raptor the Nazi might have built while showing that few were truly
safe. This is particularly true of Nazi retaliations that seem out of proportion and illogical. Consider
the train attack by Resistance individuals in the small town of Ascq. At night, a small charge was
detonated that temporarily delayed a train carrying troops and equipment. Though there was no
physical damage, this was a heavy psychologic blow to the already agitated Nazi Germans. Such a
bottleneck along the track would have exposed the entire assembly to farther attacks, disrupted
schedules elsewhere and left the soldiers abandoned in, now, enemy territory. The Nazi retaliation was
brutal. Per the newly adjusted regulations, nearest village was sacked and all the adult males were
rounded up and massacred at the end of the train. Nazi responses was quick and merciless carried out
in a matter of hours after the original attack. The actions of the soldiers was explained away by the
governments as acts of self defense. As Robert Gildea stated At Ascq, the first reaction to the massacre
of 2 April I944 was a wave of hatred of the Germans. The word atrocities was now on everyone s lips
in a way it had not been since 1914 18, and there was a sense that the barbarities of the war raging in
the east were now moving to the west. Here was a concrete, undeniable example of brutality of Nazi
Germany. It quickly became a recruiting point for Resistance groups. The death on all the males of a
village including a vicar and curate could not be readily hidden away. No longer could the general
public avoid the reports of other Nazi atrocities in other countries. And so, Resistance grew into more
everyday

Misconceptions Of Stereotypes
Have you ever been judged based on who you hang out with or what you do because of stereotypes
and misconceptions? A stereotype is an over exaggerated mental picture that is made to categorize a
group of people. A misconception is an untrue view based off stereotypes. Almost everyone can be
placed into a stereotypical group based on any little aspect of their life. Scared. Guilty. Helpless.
Worried. Angry. Those are just some feelings a child experiences while living in a home where their
parents are violent towards each other. Children raised in a domestic violent home are typically just as
violent and aggressive as their parents are. At least that is what stereotypes and misconceptions say.
Children with violent parents are one of the many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stereotypes range from your type of music to your sense of style to your weight/size, which can be
positive or negative. Stereotypes are not always lies, just more of an over exaggeration of the truth.
For instance, if someone were to say teen moms are high school dropouts it would be a stereotype.
This stereotype may come from a statistic that shows teen moms are less likely to finish high school
than other women in school, but it isn t true that all teenage mothers are high school dropouts. Based
on this stereotype, there would be a misconception that teenage mothers are less educated than other
mothers. Which isn t true because everyone is capable of receiving the same amount of education,

Sun Tzu Art Of War
It was but a major coincidence that Sun Tzu s The Art of War came to existence at a similar timeline to
the Greco Persian Wars. Granted, the exact date of the book s publication was unknown, according to
History.com, historians believed that the book was present between the 4th or 5th century BC.
Assuming that the estimated date was right, then it was remarkable how the tactics and strategy used
in the first and second Persian invasions of Greece that took place from 499 BC to 449 BC, paralleled
much of Sun Tzu s ideology and wisdom on warfare. If Sun Tzu somehow were to travel through
space and time to observe the Greco Persian Wars as it happened, he would have been overwhelmed at
the similarities between his principles and the tactics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, the Persian army demolished buildings, stole Greek treasure, and reduced the Athens to
rubble when they seized the Greek city. That would have perhaps shocked Sun Tzu the most since he
believed that in the practical art of war, the enemy s country should be left untouched (8). The rule
was not to destroy the conquered cities if possible. (8). It was better to keep besieged cities intact as it
would avoid the large cost of expenditure. Sun Tzu would have likely opposed much of the
generalship shown by the Persians. The general needed a great variation of tactics and an
understanding of the configuration of the country (30). Also, there were some major faults pointed in
the Art of War that were exhibited by the Persian commanders such as recklessness and vulnerability
(31, 32). This was apparent when Xerxes fled after the loss at Salamis. It showed the cowardice of the
ruler and the breakdown of the invasion. In this regard, it was obvious that Sun Tzu would have
condemned many of the Persian actions since it went against the readings of his book. The rulers and
generals of the Persian kingdom made decisions that Sun Tzu would not have made. In retrospect,
presuming that Sun Tzu were to advise the Persian ruler in the war, the outcome of the war would

Stuff Is Not Salvation Essay
I have really enjoyed being in this English class. Just like the warning we got in the very beginning,
there has been a lot of writing. It was good for me though. I took English 101 over the summer, but
found I had quite a bit of writer s block. It was hard for me to get any kind of energy to write. I found
that interesting because I feel like I like writing is something that is enjoyable to me. With this class,
the activities put forth, meant to help us get the writing gears moving, really worked for me. The first
way we got a jump start was through the article summary assignments based on articles pertaining to
contemporary culture. In all honesty, some of them did cause me to look at things with eyes I had not
used before. One article in particular that sticks out in my mind, is Stuff is Not Salvation, by Anna
Quindlen. Through her use of Ethos, she really brings to light how Americans have this ridiculous
obsession with buying stuff. She notes how we are trying to use junk to make ourselves happier, but in
the end, as Anna puts it, The happiest families I know aren t the ones with the most square footage
(Qtd in Perspectives pg 503). Before reviewing this article, I considered myself someone who didn t
necessarily NEED stuff, but as the assignment went on, I realized how bad it really has gotten for us
as a society. Another article that really made me think was the argumentative article, In Defense of
Sweatshops, by Benjamin Powell. When I first read the title of

Diversity Lottery
Through the Diversity Visa Lottery Program, immigrant visas are made available annually to people
whose country of origin has low immigration rates to the United States. Each year, the State
Department selects 110,000 applicants from all qualified entries. However, once 50,000 immigrant
visas are issued, or the fiscal year ends, the lottery is closed. Immigrant visas are not available for
people whose country of origin sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the last five
years.
Many people think they can show up at a U.S. embassy or border post, describe why they d make a
good addition to U.S. society, and be welcomed in. Unfortunately, this is the exact opposite of how the
U.S. immigration system works.
Instead, people who want to come to the U.S., whether temporarily or permanently, must determine
whether they fit into eligibility categories for either permanent residence (a green card) or for a
temporary stay ( nonimmigrant visa ).
Then they must submit an application in fact, often a series of applications to one or more of the U.S.
agencies responsible for carrying out the immigration laws. These include U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS), which has offices across the United States, and the U.S. Department
of State (DOS), which manages consulates and embassies around the world.

Arthropods are Small but Mighty
Arthropods ensure that the human race exists and yet many people do not even know what they are.
Arthropods are invertebrates that have external skeletons, segmented bodies, and jointed appendages.
In other words, arthropods are the tiny creepy crawlies that we try and avoid every day. Although they
may seems disgusting without them we would not be alive. Arthropods have stamped out hunger and
fed the world. They have united us as a planet and spread ideas and beliefs. They have ensured we can
farm and that animals can survive ( BBC Documentary Insect Worlds: Them Us Episode 1. ). They
may be small but they are mighty.
Without arthropods millions of people would go hungry. Over 80% of the world consumes insects,
which are famous arthropods ( U.N. Suggests Eating Bugs to Fight World Hunger. ). In Kenya,
villagers swing baskets into the air to catch flies. Once they catch the flies they fry them in hot oil and
eat them. Those fly patties have seven times more protein than a beef burger. In a place where protein
is scarce, this food is very important to their health. Caterpillars are also a great source of protein that
are eaten by hundreds of people all over the world. People also consume eleven million crustaceans a
year, another popular edible arthropod ( BBC Documentary Insect Worlds: Them Us Episode 1. ). The
united nations has even suggested that eating insects will help solve the global hunger issue

The League Of Nations
Instructions
The League of Nations was made in the outcome of the First World War to elevate global
confrantation and to attain to universal peace and security. (Langholtz, 2010). It demonstrated
uniquely unsuccessful. The Association estranged the global forces who were vanquished in the First
World War and even neglected to hold together the successful partners; in fact, the United States never
got involved with the League of Nations. Amid the 1920s and 1930s, the previous associates of World
War I floated separated and incapacitated, while universal powers outside the Alliance took to tyranny
and rearmament. As the worldwide scene tackled more inauspicious headings, the Association of
Countries was weak to keep the world s plummet into a Second World War.
The UN was made after World War II. Like the Alliance of Countries, it was focused around the
presumption that the successful wartime forces would keep the global peace. Dissimilar to the
previous Class, in any case, the UN tried impressive endeavors to accommodate and acclimatize the
vanquished countries of World War II. Likewise, the quick development of its participation because of
decolonization gave new countries a voice and impact that they had never had previously. In its
prelude, the Sanction of the United Countries stated its objectives as expressed by Langholtz (2010):
To spare succeeding eras from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold
distress to humankind, and To reaffirm

Marxist vs Functionalist View of Ed
COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE FUNCTIONALIST AND MARXIST VIEWS ON EDUCATION
(20 marks) The role of education is to educate individuals within society and to prepare them for
working life, also to integrate individuals and teach them the norms, values and roles within society.
Functionalism and Marxism are the two main perspectives which will be studied; Marxism is a
structural conflict sociological theory whereas functionalism is a structural consensus sociological
theory. Functionalism sees society as a whole. It is often referred to as the consensus theory as it does
not address the issue of conflict in society. It looks at all the major aspects in society for example the

that the education system socialises people into society by informal and formal processes. Primary and
secondary socialisations are two forms of socialisation to teach children simple norms and values.
Primary is conducted by the family whereas secondary is done within education. A form of secondary
education is the hidden curriculum, the aim of the hidden curriculum is to socialise young people into
accepting the role assigned to them by the capitalist class. The hidden curriculum teaches obedience
and respect for the established organisation of work. The majority of teachers unconsciously deliver
the hidden curriculum. In conclusion from a functionalist perspective, society is regarded as a system
which is made up of interrelated and interconnected parts. Each part will affect every other part if it
changes. There needs to be basic needs in order to survive and a minimum degree of integration
between each part. Both perspectives agree that education is a positive thing in society also what
occurs through the education socialisation has a great affect in job choices. Functionalism argues that
the education system selects certain individuals for appropriate roles whereas Marxist argues that the
education system helps to reproduce the capitalism in

Teen People Magazine Essay
Teen People Magazine
The Teen People, September edition, is a magazine designed to appeal to young female readers. Its
content features well known celebrities, use of bright and flashy colors, and an organized layout that
attracts an upbeat, young readership interested in high quality appearance and style. Although the
magazine s main focus may appear to insure a great fashion sense, it also concentrates on a
philosophical orientation by covering a more diverse readership that includes all colors, sizes, and
shapes of females. Teen People also expands its audience by recognizing both visual and text oriented
audiences. To appeal to the more visual oriented audience, the magazine uses exotic photography in
the advertisements for Self ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, the advertisement on page sixty four of the magazine uses an angelic/fairy tale theme to
introduce Secret Deodorant to the visually stimulated audience. In the center of the page, a fairy like
woman stands in the midst of a very surreal setting with stars and a light blue sky. By using a woman
who personifies a fairy, Secret manages to connect the new brand of Secret Violet Dazzle with a
mystical theme. The bright hues of purple and the naturalistic atmosphere, once again, attract very
young viewers to the product. Secret pictures a frail, flawless female to suggest that varying types of
women may use their product and still resemble the pure and enchanting image. Thus, they
incorporate the text When you re strong, you Sparkle, to show that by using their product, one can
eliminate the fear of smelling and sparkle with confidence. The advertisement itself is very striking to
the human eye. It s busy layout and choice in colors captivates those who enjoy striking photography.
Unlike the Self Esteem and Secret Deodorant advertisements, which project a flirtatious and heavenly
attitude, Ralph Lauren s advertisement for the new scented hair collection portrays a model with a
sexually suggestive attitude. Ralph Lauren, a clothing line known for its natural yet sexy look, attracts
young females with the desire to be well known. Although the photography appears rather simple and
plain, the readers

Spanking Is A Negative Consequences Of Disciplining Children
Discipline is very important in everyone s life. All parents try to do their best for their children.
However, this crucial issue is sometimes misunderstood by some parents when it comes to
disciplining their children. Some parents use a very controversial method known as spanking which is
a corporal punishment that can have tremendous consequences on a child s life. Although defenders of
corporal punishment argue that spanking allows parents to curb children s behavior, spanking has been
shown to have long lasting effects on a child. Not only does it teach children to be violent, it also
reduces the trust between parents and children. Furthermore, it makes a child experience resentment
towards his parents.
First, spanking is bad because it teaches children to be violent. When a child is hit for discipline, he
will experience aggressiveness, and while playing with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Spanking gives children a kind of fear towards their parents because they bear in mind that if
something is wrong, they will automatically be punished, and this can be a burden they will carry into
adulthood. This lack of faith can sometimes lead to a certain kind of introverted behavior in some
children because their parents used to hit them when they say something wrong in front of their
friends. And this can be of greater impact on the child s mental health. Instead, as an alternative to
spanking, parents can choose to talk to their children, have an open dialogue where they can teach
them right from wrong without shouting or hitting.
Last, spanking can make a child feel resentment towards his parents. Children who are used to being
spanked develop a kind of bitterness that can rapidly turn into hatred because the child will have the
feeling that his parents don t care about him. In addition, what really interest them are the errors he
makes and how they are going to punish him. So in the end, the child will turn his back on his

Maple Syrp Disease
Maple Syrup Urine Disease is a potently fatal disorder which affects the body s ability of breaking
down three Branched chain amino acids: isoleucine, leucine and valine. The inability of breaking
down the three branched amino acid chain is due to defect in an enzyme called branched chain alpha
ketoacid dehydrogenase. Which is the enzyme responsible for breaking down isoleucine, leucine and
valine. This will result in high levels of the branched amino acids in plasma and alpha ketoacid in
urine. The presence of alpha ketoacid in urine will result in a burned maple syrup odder. Hence the
name, Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). Maple Syrup disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive

Land Law 19th Century
The land and business interests in Western New York were highly connected to the politics of
infrastructure. Land and Business interests lobbied the state government for the creation of canals and
railroads, due to their tendency to increase trade and the value of land in the surrounding area. For
instance, the agricultural developer and politician, Asahel Cole, of Friendship, lobbied for the
construction of the Genesee Railway and was appointed by the state legislature to manage the project.
By the time of the 1840 s the Whig Party managed to establish significant support among voters in the
region by championing infrastructure projects as a means of economic development. In the course of

Last of the Mohicans Movie Review Essay example
The last of the Mohicans review The last of the Mohicans was a movie that really appealed to me from
the beginning because of the heroism and the action into it. The main characters in this movie were
Daniel day Lewis as Nathanial Poe (Hawkeye) and Madeline Stowe as Cora Munro. The movie could
be described as a romantic action like a Spiderman or a superman movie always needs the girl to give
motivation to the main character but it is a historical drama. The movie was 112 minutes long, it
contains three languages English, French and Mohawk, it was filmed in the USA, it was released in

Comparing Frances Zefferilli’s Hamlet and Shakespeare’s...
Comparing Frances Zefferilli s Hamlet and Shakespeare s Hamlet
I believe Frances Zefferilli s version of Shakespeare s Hamlet, made in 1990, is one of the best
versions of the play to be put onto screen. The film, starring Mel Gibson as Hamlet, and Glen Close as
Queen Gertrude, takes a different look to the play. Zefferilli explores the physiological stability of
Hamlet very well, especially in Act 3, Scene 4. My interpretation of that scene in the text was different
to the one given in the movie.
After reading the scene, I had the notion that Hamlet was already quite confused he had just come out
of a scene where he could have killed the king, but his blunted purpose gets in the way. The killing of
Polonius in the text gave me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He just continues on. He isn t put off because he had such high hopes that it would be the king, so
instead of being sad about the murder of his trusted councillor, he is merely disappointed that it had to
be Polonius calling for help instead of the king.
This part of the scene is presented a bit differently in the movie. When Hamlet enters, you can really
tell that he has gone mad. He is sad one minute, the next minute he ll give out an almighty roar.
Zefferilli has used the scenes surrounding this one to make it seem important. In some of the versions
they didn t have the near death of Claudious the scene before. I think having this scene beforehand
sets you up for Hamlet s confrontation with his mother.
You can really tell that both Hamlet and Gertrude are affected by Hamlet s insanity. Both of them
appear to cry for most of the scene. The whole scene is a sharing of emotions. The kiss is a connection
between them both, rather than a lust they both have for any sexual contact. They needed to connect
physically in some way, after all they are mother and son.
When the ghost of Hamlet s father enters, Hamlet is eager to find out what he has to say. The ghost
suggests that Hamlet talks to his mother but Gertrude still believes that he has lost his sanity, Alas,
how is t with you? . In the movie the ghost appears to be a real person, not a see through character like
the other movies depict. This is done to cause the allusion that Hamlet s father is still

The Nature Of The And Hunter Gatherer Societies
Throughout history, humanities encounters with the other inhabitants of our planet have provoked
many questions and assumptions about the natural state of our being and our relationship with the the
world in which we live. A reflection from Sahlins on this relationship poses that Nature is to culture as
the constituted is to the constituting (1976: 209). Whereby nature as it exists in itself is the raw
material provided by the hand of God, waiting to be given meaningful shape and content by the mind
of man, culture provides a building plan for society with nature as the building materials (ibid:210).
The fate of nature once culturalized is its new mode of existence is then bound by the benefits of
exploitation by strongest of men. Through the well documented period of European colonialism in
Jahoda 2008 Wolf 2010, we can see how the assumptions of intellectual supremacy fed a negative
construction of the other , underpinning waves of colonial expansion and facilitating the domination of
pastoralist and hunter gatherer societies, ultimately serving to perpetuate economically exploitative
relationships. Fortunately for mankind, the remedial element of time and the critical thinking of the
enlightenment age has encouraged a more sympathetic consideration of radically different social
systems and cultural practices (Mason 1990 in Jahoda), and has inspired some thinkers (Locke 1689
Rousseau 1750) to envisage a more ethical, freer race of mankind. This essay

the Métis. There have been many controversial figures throughout Canada s history, but Louis Riel is
one of the most controversial figure. His perspective on how he dealt with manner is still debated
today. A key aspect discussed today is why Riel is a hero to his people; the Métis. Louis Riel had once
recognized the turmoil the Métis had to face, through this Riel proved that one must take actions in
order to achieve a person s right. Firstly, Louis Riel is a savior due to his actions to defend the Roman

Moreover, the government s insufficiency caused Riel to act accordingly. Earlier, it was mentioned
that the Canadian government was not authorized to take legal action until December of 1869. Though
this was clearly recognized by the government, they sent surveyors in June of 1869 for settlers to live
there. The government broke their own laws, hence it proves that Riel, due to the government s flawed
intentions, had to enforce his rule, by stepping on the chains. Unit Two: The Development of Western
Canada, on page 36 highlights that in 1882, surveyors came to the Métis peoples North West
Settlements to examine the land once more. The Métis acted quickly and sent 15 petitions to the
Canadian government for the rights of their land, none of which were answered. Once again, the
government was incapable. The government could have prevented all the troubles, but due to their
insufficiency and flawed system, they let the surveyors come onto the land. In addition to this, the
government had signed many treaties with the Métis. But, the government, yet again, didn t keep their
word and didn t follow the laws of giving them what the treaties had promised. To conclude, Riel was
compelled to take arms. The lack of control, caused the government to spend millions and ended in
destruction. Flashback Canada on page 196 stated, Some new evidence suggests that the Chief Justice

Difference Between Spanish And New England Colonies
Spanish vs New England Colonies Starting in 1492 when Christopher Columbus, a Spanish explorer,
sailed the ocean blue and discovered the New World began this journey for the Spanish and New
England colonies. A settlement had begun to develop as more expeditions sailed for the New World.
The Spanish drive for mercantilism and the desire for the expansion of the joint stock companies set
them apart from New England. The English wanted religious persecution from Britain and the
Anglican Church. The New England, the Middle, and the Chesapeake colonies held the most power in
this time period. Wealth for the colonies was found in trading manufactured goods, raw materials, fur,
and most important slaves. This brought much conflict between the colonies, causing the development
of each to be deterred from the original path. It is in this context that the countries of Spain and New
England had been attempting to establish life and wealth in the New World in opposite ways. Three
noteworthy differences between the Spanish and New England colonies were their economic ideals,
religious ways, and the manner in which the colonies treated the indigenous people are what set the
two colonies apart from each other. A significant difference between the Spanish and New England
colonies was their economic ideals. Although the English and the Spanish both wanted to bring wealth
to their countries, both colonies took different paths. The race for wealth between these countries

What Is A Coffee Table Essay
A coffee table, which is also known as a center table, is a low table , specially designed to be placed in
front of a sofa. Your coffee table should be such that looks good, serves well and displays a few
accessories that reveal your personality and goes well with living room decor. A coffee table is usually
the centre of attraction in a living room. It should not just be not a mere piece of furniture but also be
functional and hopefully likely to become a conversation piece among the guests
Things to consider
1. Requirements are the priority: The coffee table that you plan to buy should be as per your needs,
beforehand decide what will be the utility of purchasing a coffee table for your living room.
2. Don t forget to measure: The size of the coffee table will largely depend on the sofa size and the
sitting arrangements. The standard height for coffee tables is from 16 to 18 inches, but may go as high
as 21 inches. A higher table is a smart choice if you entertain frequently so that guests don t have to
bend too much to set down their drinks. But, ultimately, the height of the adjacent upholstered pieces
should determine the height of the table. One guideline is that a coffee table should be about the same
height or one or two inches lower than the seat height of the sofa. And keep in mind to leave at least ...

Effects Of Smoking In Restaurants
Smoking in restaurants
One thousand Americans stop smoking everyday by dying said by anonymous. If smoking is killing
people every day, why would we want someone to poison ourselves with deadly air? When we are in a
restaurant and someone is smoking we are breathing the same air that they are. Even though their lips
are on the cancer stick the same toxins they are breathing in is being released in the air around them.
Without proper ventilation (open fresh air), the people around the light cigarette would be breathing in
those same toxins and poisons, which is second hand smoking. Smoking in a restaurant is not only
harmful to the one smoking but to those around them. Smoking can cause loss of appetite, senses, side
effects from second smoking and most of all the rights of a nonsmoker to not be presented to the
smoke. When going into a restaurant, a person wants to enjoy their meal and time. Especially if they
are going and spending money on the luxury. But did you know that smoking can cause loss of
appetite and loss of senses? When someone is smoking they ingest toxins such as tar and carbine
monoxide, which causes the loss of appetite and senses? So, if someone is going to a restaurant they
want to digest the food and drinks that they plan to order not toxins that causes loss of appetite and
senses. In the book Truth About Smoking , it concludes about the harms of smoking and the harm that
smoking has on the mouth. Smoking causes gum disease, staining and loss of teeth as well as bad
breath. When tar, the solid particles in tobacco smoke that collect in the lungs, mixes with saliva in the
mouth, it coats the teeth. Teeth take on a brownish color, and flat surfaces where the tar can
accumulate can even become black, are all results of smoke staining teeth. Which can also cause wear
on the biting surface of the teeth which leads to teeth decay. With gum disease the gums recede, they
expose the roots of the teeth. The bacteria in the gum pockets don t just attack the tissue of the gums,
they weaken the bone and the connective tissue that holds the teeth in place. The residue of cigarette
smoke remains on the breath, including the tar particles that stain the teeth. What happens is Saliva

The Merit Of Education
Education is a process of acquisition of ideas, either skill, facts or the art of imparting judgment to a
group, society or even an individual (Grace, 1996). Most of the countries to spend a lot of their funds
on education. It is mainly experienced in the American government. The education system in this
continent is free to its citizen. To my opinion, making it free adds a lot of merit to them. They can
develop their society in different areas because they have the required skills and knowledge that may
be necessary to carry out any development activity. It is through education that several developments
relay on. Educated people can pool their ideas together to alleviate a problem that may be affecting
them. My argument on the merit of education will be based on what value it has to the person being
educated and the one proving funds for education.
The United States government does a lot to its citizen. The primary task is to educate its citizen. It
makes sure that everyone can access the quality education all over the American soil. The government
spends a lot of its fund to educate its citizen. It is so because education is free in America. It ensures
that no one will be segregated out due to poverty that maybe a hindrance to education. There are
merits that people leap from this education such as technology advancement, cohesion, economic
growth, employment, agricultural developments and many others. The government does reap a lot
from the education it provides to its

The Cricket Match Essay
The Cricket Match
Samuel Selvon s short story, The Cricket Match explores the subtle racial tensions amongst West
Indian immigrants living in England whilst working with English counterparts. Selvon sets his
narrative in a tyre factory in Chiswick, England. Most likely, the timeline in which this story occurs is
somewhere in the mid 1950 s when England were still colonists of most of the English speaking
Caribbean islands. The main idea behind Selvon s tale lies with Algernon the protagonist, whose
desire to fabricate his knowledge of cricket, so as to simultaneously impress but show disdain towards
the Englishmen around him backfires because it is this self proclaimed knowledge which places him
into conflict. Selvon also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Selvon ingeniously crafts the resolution, though with slight absurdity, through a somewhat amusing
and likable manner very similar to that of a picaresque novel. Algernon manages to compose an
unenthusiastic team to play against the English team. Still, even more amusingly, the English players
are equally afraid of Algernon s team and vice versa. The match commences with the West Indian
eleven batting first, and displaying a commendable though fortuitous performance. Conversely, and
perhaps conveniently though, rain begins to fall, hence bringing the match to an abrupt end. This
resolution allows Algernon to save his credibility and further taunt his English co workers: If my bat
didn t fly out my hand ... as if to say he would have lost the ball in the other county. and: ... next
cricket season I will get a sharp eleven together... now if you want me to show you how I make that
stroke... This conclusion which Selvon employs gives Algernon a fairly roguish characteristic, and
thus the picaresque similarity.
Selvon s plot structure is basically simple and straightforward. The narrator introduces the story and
highlights the major flaw of the protagonist, which then manifests itself as a central part of the
conflict. While the rising action begins to escalate, minor episodes relating to the conflict begin to
surface, thereby enhancing the dramatic effect of the climax. The plot s falling action is

There are various sources through which the developer can get fund to finance real estate
development.
2.2.1. Equity Capital
This is the fund realized from personal savings and family savings. It is usually low because of low
per capital income, unequal distribution of income and high population in each family unit resulting in
excessive consumption, low savings and low investment in Nigeria.
Since this equity capital is usually small, it is prudent for him to decide on a mixture of equity and

Ability to borrow will be enhanced by the size of equity capital at his disposal.

traditional sources of short term finance are the commercial and merchant banks as well as finance

The Importance Of Islam A Way Of Life
Islam is not only a religion, but a way of life. According to Al Shahri (2002), Islam means total
obedience or submission to the true and one Allah (Allah is the Arabic name for God). The source of
law in the Islamic legal system arising from Islam is the Qur an and Sunnah. The Qur an is the word
of Allah as revealed to Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon him [PBUH]) through the angel Gabriel.
Sunnah is the collection of words, actions, traditions, and deeds of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
Islam is the way of life within the system of values that advocate forgiveness, peace, repentance, and
mercy. These values are not only central to Islamic philosophy, but are universally held at the root of
nursing care. Islamic Philosophy provides guidance on moral, spiritual, personal, social, political, and
economic affairs for all aspects of Muslim s life (Rashidi Rajaram, 2001).
There are many concepts important to the underlying philosophy in Islam. The idea of tawheed is
central in Islam. Tawheed means unification and the Ones of God, which required maintaining God s
unity in all human activities: practically, intellectually, and spiritually (Rassool, 2000). Islam defines
human beings with specific paradigms, which include mind, soul and spirit, body, and heart. The
practice of the Muslim life reflects these paradigms in the individual s relationship with Allah.
According to Luna (1994), Tawheed implies that there is no separation of the spiritual dimension from
the body: in other words, there is body mind unity. In the past, the rise of positivism resulted in the
conceptual separation of mind and body and this concept then found its way into modern healthcare.
According to Rashidi and Rajaram (2001), this separation of body and mind has had a negative
influence on the holistic approach to providing nursing care (Rashidi Rajaram, 2001). In the Islamic
philosophy of nursing care, this idea of positivism has been rejected.
Muslims believe in predestination according to Allah s will. In the understanding of the spiritual life,
there is a belief in life after death and a Day of Judgment. At that time, it is believed that Allah judge s
people based on their deeds during earthly life. There are five

Mcauslan Brewing Co. Case Essay
McAuslan Brewing Co.
Identification of Major Problems/Issues
1) PROBLEM: There is no separate and formal human resource department. Each department within
the company is independently responsible for hiring and training newcomers. This is a major problem
because it is very probable that unqualified new employees with no experience and the skill necessary
to do the job are being hired. Also, the company needs a separate department which specializes in
finding and training employees. SOLUTION: The company could outsource the department by
finding and teaming up with another corporation/company which will concentrate on all the aspects of
HR. Or, the company could simply create a new HR department by hiring a skilled manager, so ...

But as the company grows, they will have to let go of this structure and culture. Even Peter wonders if
this structure is suitable if the company will grow in the future. SOLUTION: By growing as a
corporation in the future, the company should and will hire more and more employees, and as the
personnel increases in number, the organizational structure and the culture will change.
5) PROBLEM: The company can t afford to pay its employees the same wages that Molson and
Labatt are paying their employees, so McAuslan is depending on the brewery workers who are getting
laid off by these large corporations. SOLUTION: The company shouldn t count on Molson and Labatt
to fire their workers and hire them at a low wage. It should, find other workers available who have
experience in the brewing industry and give them various incentives to join the company. And as the
company grows financially, then it can match the wages paid by the large companies.
S.W.O.T. analysis.
Strengths: Image of quality, adventure and uniqueness. The beer is reminiscent of traditional English
style. Won four medals at the World Beer Championship.
Weaknesses: Lack of an HR department. Uses traditional advertising media. Peter is responsible for
marketing, PR, regulatory affairs and business dev.

Dust Bowl Essay
According to answers.com, a dust bowl is a region reduced to aridity by drought and dust storms. The
best known dust bowl is doubtless the one that hit the United States between 1933 and 1939.
One major cause of that Dust Bowl was severe droughts during the 1930 s. The other cause was
capitalism. Over farming and grazing in order to achieve high profits killed of much of the plain s
grassland and when winds approached, nothing was there to hold the devastated soil on the ground.
The Dust Bowl affected the Great Plains which consist of parts of the U.S. states of Colorado, Kansas,
Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.
Storms also reached the East Coast of the United States. The Dust Bowl ... Show more content on

With youth and ambition ground into the very dust itself, I can only drift with the tide.
Lawrence Svobida most likely joined the Dust Bowl exodus, the largest migration in American
history. By 1940, 2.5 million people had moved out of the Plains states; of those, 200,000 moved to
California. Arriving in California, the migrants were faced with a life almost as difficult as the one
they had left.
Many California farms were corporate owned. They were larger, and more modernized that those of
the southern plains, and the crops were unfamiliar. Many farmers from the Great Plains ended up
picking cotton and grapes for wages as low as 0.75 $ a day.
Other asylums included Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and New Mexico. The vast majority of Dust
Bowl migrants stayed on the West Coast permanently.
The Dust Bowl also inspired painters and other artists. One of the best known artists in connection
with the Dust Bowl is Alexandre Hogue. His picture s name is simply Dust Bowl .
An artist who compares the Dust Bowl to nowadays air pollution is Heather Watts. Her best known
picture is the New Dustbowl Blues .
Dorothea Lange became a well known photographer with pictures of the Dust Bowl. According to
Garland 2003 her photography obtained government relief for Dust Bowl migrants because she
visually demonstrated the hunger, poverty, hardship, and the plight of the migrants.

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In January 2012 as he investigated the challenges in the current production process, he met most of key departments and work centres by touring the factory. Industry Overview Bayonne Packaging, Inc is in the paper packaging industry. In the 1980s and early 1990s companies in the consumer goods industry start to look for a greater impact with their promotional materials and star to implement their promotional budget to the package itself instead of print media and broadcast forms. This led to a rapidly growth on the paper packaging industry. Also, additional customer market segments made a quick impact in a crowded marketplace due to the explosive growth of software packaging. These factors give good reason for the growth in sales from 10 million in 1982 to 32 million in 2001. New challenges were faced with the bursting of the dot com bubble and when software sales and distribution moved from CDs to the Internet, but Bayonne dealt well this challenges by adopting a strategy of diversification into new markets. • 4. Gender In Canterbury Tales The roles and expectations that coincide with gender are displayed in Jeffrey Eugenides Middlesex. By chronicling Cal Stephanides family history, Eugenides displays the continual and generational disconnect between sex and gender. As his focus shifts from one generation to the next, this disconnect becomes more clear and prevalent, making gender identity an increasingly fluid concept. In literature, a similar shift can be seen as eras and periods pass, reflecting the ideas within those time periods regarding gender and sex and how they change. This including various texts from the Ancient Period, Medieval Period, Renaissance Period, and Age of Reason such as the story of Lilith from The Alphabet of Ben Sira, Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, Baldassare Castiglione s The Courtier, and To the Fair Clarinda by Aphra Behn. Constantly evolving, gender has become less defined by one s biological sex, and more so determined by personal comfortability either within or outside of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Griselda is a virtuous, fair young woman admired by all. Her husband, Walter, puts her through intense emotional distress by telling her to sacrifice her children, and she complies so she can remain loyal to him. She remains affable, [meeting guests] so cheerfully... with so much skill... that none could find a fault in how she treated them despite her inner affliction (Chaucer 350). • 5. The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe To begin with, Poe has carefully tailored the narrative in a manner to fit the theory of single effect. The unnamed narrator suggests that his main job is to narrate. His logical treatment and explanation of what happens throughout the story adds plausibility and credibility to the narrator. Darrel Abel described the narrator as Anthropos for he, the narrator, remains uncharacterized, undescribed and even unnamed (177). Although the reader does not know much about him, the attention is fully drawn instead to the strangeness in the House of Usher and the horror tour inside the house. Poe builds a strong connection between the narrator and the reader, The reader represents Poe s ideal narrator, and Poe s narrator represents his ideal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Poe s psychological approach to the story makes the connection between the reader and the narrator stronger and shows the strategy that Poe adopted in conveying the feelings from the text into the reader s mind. Thus, what the reader experiences in the process of reading the text reveals exactly what happens to the narrator. In return, what happens to the narrator suggests the process the reader undergoes in the reading of Poe s story: The reader becomes an active mediator containing the psychological effects of the story s utterance, so the narrator s imagination records a series of psychological effects that constitute the action of Poe s text (Bieganowski 178). The second element that Poe dedicates to achieving unity of effect is setting. Much of the horror in The Fall of the House of Usher is achieved through its gloomy setting. The story opens with a grim start: During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher (Poe 117). Poe wastes no time putting the reader in front of the image of an eerie, old mansion. As a result, the reader will soon be aware of a sense of death and decay. Poe and Byron both used a dark, creepy setting in their novels. Poe had his story set in a crypt, and Byron had his story set in a dungeon. Both of the novels had at least one individual chained up in a deep, isolated, underground structure. In The Cask of Amontillado Monstresor buried up his lifelong rival while he was chained up to a wall screaming, and thrashing the chains he was on. They are the engineers, presidents, congressman, businessman, and lawyers of tomorrow. Later that day, I saw a news article discussing the issue of same sex adoption. As I watched I thought to myself, where did we forget that it was about the kids? So, out of curiosity, I began to look up some statistics about kids that have no homes, the ones that are waiting for good families. I started wondering if it is about the kids, then why, do we care about same sex adoptions at all. There are two sides to the argument of same sex adoption, and to really get a feel for the issue you must understand both sides. The spread of information through newspapers and radios was crucial to the morality and organization of the people and the Resistance and thus a primary target of the Nazis. This destroyed any raptor the Nazi might have built while showing that few were truly safe. This is particularly true of Nazi retaliations that seem out of proportion and illogical. Consider the train attack by Resistance individuals in the small town of Ascq. At night, a small charge was detonated that temporarily delayed a train carrying troops and equipment. Though there was no physical damage, this was a heavy psychologic blow to the already agitated Nazi Germans. Such a bottleneck along the track would have exposed the entire assembly to farther attacks, disrupted schedules elsewhere and left the soldiers abandoned in, now, enemy territory. The Nazi retaliation was brutal. Per the newly adjusted regulations, nearest village was sacked and all the adult males were rounded up and massacred at the end of the train. Nazi responses was quick and merciless carried out in a matter of hours after the original attack. The actions of the soldiers was explained away by the governments as acts of self defense. The word atrocities was now on everyone s lips in a way it had not been since 1914 18, and there was a sense that the barbarities of the war raging in the east were now moving to the west. Here was a concrete, undeniable example of brutality of Nazi Germany. It quickly became a recruiting point for Resistance groups. Assuming that the estimated date was right, then it was remarkable how the tactics and strategy used in the first and second Persian invasions of Greece that took place from 499 BC to 449 BC, paralleled much of Sun Tzu s ideology and wisdom on warfare. That would have perhaps shocked Sun Tzu the most since he believed that in the practical art of war, the enemy s country should be left untouched (8). The rule was not to destroy the conquered cities if possible. (8). It was better to keep besieged cities intact as it would avoid the large cost of expenditure. Sun Tzu would have likely opposed much of the generalship shown by the Persians. The general needed a great variation of tactics and an understanding of the configuration of the country (30). Also, there were some major faults pointed in the Art of War that were exhibited by the Persian commanders such as recklessness and vulnerability (31, 32). This was apparent when Xerxes fled after the loss at Salamis. It showed the cowardice of the ruler and the breakdown of the invasion. In this regard, it was obvious that Sun Tzu would have condemned many of the Persian actions since it went against the readings of his book. By the time of the 1840 s the Whig Party managed to establish significant support among voters in the region by championing infrastructure projects as a means of economic development. Last of the Mohicans Movie Review Essay example The last of the Mohicans review The last of the Mohicans was a movie that really appealed to me from the beginning because of the heroism and the action into it. The main characters in this movie were Daniel day Lewis as Nathanial Poe (Hawkeye) and Madeline Stowe as Cora Munro. The movie could be described as a romantic action like a Spiderman or a superman movie always needs the girl to give motivation to the main character but it is a historical drama. The movie was 112 minutes long, it contains three languages English, French and Mohawk, it was filmed in the USA, it was released in September 1992 and its tagline was the first American hero, it is also based on the novel of James Fennimore cooper. • 29. Comparing Frances Zefferilli’s Hamlet and Shakespeare’s... Comparing Frances Zefferilli s Hamlet and Shakespeare s Hamlet I believe Frances Zefferilli s version of Shakespeare s Hamlet, made in 1990, is one of the best versions of the play to be put onto screen. The film, starring Mel Gibson as Hamlet, and Glen Close as Queen Gertrude, takes a different look to the play. Zefferilli explores the physiological stability of Hamlet very well, especially in Act 3, Scene 4. My interpretation of that scene in the text was different to the one given in the movie. After reading the scene, I had the notion that Hamlet was already quite confused he had just come out of a scene where he could have killed the king, but his blunted purpose gets in the way. The killing of Polonius in the text gave me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He just continues on. He isn t put off because he had such high hopes that it would be the king, so instead of being sad about the murder of his trusted councillor, he is merely disappointed that it had to be Polonius calling for help instead of the king. This part of the scene is presented a bit differently in the movie. When Hamlet enters, you can really tell that he has gone mad. He is sad one minute, the next minute he ll give out an almighty roar. Zefferilli has used the scenes surrounding this one to make it seem important. In some of the versions they didn t have the near death of Claudious the scene before. I think having this scene beforehand sets you up for Hamlet s confrontation with his mother. You can really tell that both Hamlet and Gertrude are affected by Hamlet s insanity. Both of them appear to cry for most of the scene. The whole scene is a sharing of emotions. The kiss is a connection between them both, rather than a lust they both have for any sexual contact. They needed to connect physically in some way, after all they are mother and son. When the ghost of Hamlet s father enters, Hamlet is eager to find out what he has to say. The ghost suggests that Hamlet talks to his mother but Gertrude still believes that he has lost his sanity, Alas, how is t with you? . • 31. The Nature Of The And Hunter Gatherer Societies Throughout history, humanities encounters with the other inhabitants of our planet have provoked many questions and assumptions about the natural state of our being and our relationship with the the world in which we live. A reflection from Sahlins on this relationship poses that Nature is to culture as the constituted is to the constituting (1976: 209). Whereby nature as it exists in itself is the raw material provided by the hand of God, waiting to be given meaningful shape and content by the mind of man, culture provides a building plan for society with nature as the building materials (ibid:210). The fate of nature once culturalized is its new mode of existence is then bound by the benefits of exploitation by strongest of men. Through the well documented period of European colonialism in Jahoda 2008 Wolf 2010, we can see how the assumptions of intellectual supremacy fed a negative construction of the other , underpinning waves of colonial expansion and facilitating the domination of pastoralist and hunter gatherer societies, ultimately serving to perpetuate economically exploitative relationships. Fortunately for mankind, the remedial element of time and the critical thinking of the enlightenment age has encouraged a more sympathetic consideration of radically different social systems and cultural practices (Mason 1990 in Jahoda), and has inspired some thinkers (Locke 1689 Rousseau 1750) to envisage a more ethical, freer race of mankind. The government broke their own laws, hence it proves that Riel, due to the government s flawed intentions, had to enforce his rule, by stepping on the chains. Unit Two: The Development of Western Canada, on page 36 highlights that in 1882, surveyors came to the Métis peoples North West Settlements to examine the land once more. The Métis acted quickly and sent 15 petitions to the Canadian government for the rights of their land, none of which were answered. Once again, the government was incapable. The government could have prevented all the troubles, but due to their insufficiency and flawed system, they let the surveyors come onto the land. In addition to this, the government had signed many treaties with the Métis. A settlement had begun to develop as more expeditions sailed for the New World. The Spanish drive for mercantilism and the desire for the expansion of the joint stock companies set them apart from New England. The English wanted religious persecution from Britain and the Anglican Church. The New England, the Middle, and the Chesapeake colonies held the most power in this time period. Wealth for the colonies was found in trading manufactured goods, raw materials, fur, and most important slaves. This brought much conflict between the colonies, causing the development of each to be deterred from the original path. It is in this context that the countries of Spain and New England had been attempting to establish life and wealth in the New World in opposite ways. Three noteworthy differences between the Spanish and New England colonies were their economic ideals, religious ways, and the manner in which the colonies treated the indigenous people are what set the two colonies apart from each other. If smoking is killing people every day, why would we want someone to poison ourselves with deadly air? When we are in a restaurant and someone is smoking we are breathing the same air that they are. Even though their lips are on the cancer stick the same toxins they are breathing in is being released in the air around them. Without proper ventilation (open fresh air), the people around the light cigarette would be breathing in those same toxins and poisons, which is second hand smoking. Smoking in a restaurant is not only harmful to the one smoking but to those around them. Smoking can cause loss of appetite, senses, side effects from second smoking and most of all the rights of a nonsmoker to not be presented to the smoke. When going into a restaurant, a person wants to enjoy their meal and time. Especially if they are going and spending money on the luxury. But did you know that smoking can cause loss of appetite and loss of senses? When someone is smoking they ingest toxins such as tar and carbine monoxide, which causes the loss of appetite and senses? So, if someone is going to a restaurant they want to digest the food and drinks that they plan to order not toxins that causes loss of appetite and senses. In the book Truth About Smoking , it concludes about the harms of smoking and the harm that smoking has on the mouth. Smoking causes gum disease, staining and loss of teeth as well as bad breath. When tar, the solid particles in tobacco smoke that collect in the lungs, mixes with saliva in the mouth, it coats the teeth. Teeth take on a brownish color, and flat surfaces where the tar can accumulate can even become black, are all results of smoke staining teeth. Which can also cause wear on the biting surface of the teeth which leads to teeth decay. With gum disease the gums recede, they expose the roots of the teeth. The Cricket Match Essay The Cricket Match Samuel Selvon s short story, The Cricket Match explores the subtle racial tensions amongst West Indian immigrants living in England whilst working with English counterparts. Selvon sets his narrative in a tyre factory in Chiswick, England. Most likely, the timeline in which this story occurs is somewhere in the mid 1950 s when England were still colonists of most of the English speaking Caribbean islands. Selvon ingeniously crafts the resolution, though with slight absurdity, through a somewhat amusing and likable manner very similar to that of a picaresque novel. Algernon manages to compose an unenthusiastic team to play against the English team. Still, even more amusingly, the English players are equally afraid of Algernon s team and vice versa. The match commences with the West Indian eleven batting first, and displaying a commendable though fortuitous performance. Conversely, and perhaps conveniently though, rain begins to fall, hence bringing the match to an abrupt end. This resolution allows Algernon to save his credibility and further taunt his English co workers: If my bat didn t fly out my hand ... as if to say he would have lost the ball in the other county. and: ... next cricket season I will get a sharp eleven together... now if you want me to show you how I make that stroke... This conclusion which Selvon employs gives Algernon a fairly roguish characteristic, and thus the picaresque similarity. Selvon s plot structure is basically simple and straightforward. The narrator introduces the story and highlights the major flaw of the protagonist, which then manifests itself as a central part of the conflict. While the rising action begins to escalate, minor episodes relating to the conflict begin to surface, thereby enhancing the dramatic effect of the climax. The plot s falling action is ... • 40. The Importance Of Islam A Way Of Life Islam is not only a religion, but a way of life. According to Al Shahri (2002), Islam means total obedience or submission to the true and one Allah (Allah is the Arabic name for God). The source of law in the Islamic legal system arising from Islam is the Qur an and Sunnah. The Qur an is the word of Allah as revealed to Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon him [PBUH]) through the angel Gabriel. Sunnah is the collection of words, actions, traditions, and deeds of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Islam is the way of life within the system of values that advocate forgiveness, peace, repentance, and mercy. These values are not only central to Islamic philosophy, but are universally held at the root of nursing care. Islamic Philosophy provides guidance on moral, spiritual, personal, social, political, and economic affairs for all aspects of Muslim s life (Rashidi Rajaram, 2001). There are many concepts important to the underlying philosophy in Islam. The idea of tawheed is central in Islam. Tawheed means unification and the Ones of God, which required maintaining God s unity in all human activities: practically, intellectually, and spiritually (Rassool, 2000). Islam defines human beings with specific paradigms, which include mind, soul and spirit, body, and heart. The practice of the Muslim life reflects these paradigms in the individual s relationship with Allah. According to Luna (1994), Tawheed implies that there is no separation of the spiritual dimension from the body: in other words, there is body mind unity. In the past, the rise of positivism resulted in the conceptual separation of mind and body and this concept then found its way into modern healthcare. According to Rashidi and Rajaram (2001), this separation of body and mind has had a negative influence on the holistic approach to providing nursing care (Rashidi Rajaram, 2001). In the Islamic philosophy of nursing care, this idea of positivism has been rejected. Muslims believe in predestination according to Allah s will. In the understanding of the spiritual life, there is a belief in life after death and a Day of Judgment. At that time, it is believed that Allah judge s people based on their deeds during earthly life. There are five ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
