Ludwig Van Beethoven Essay
The composer of some of the most influential pieces of music ever
written, Ludwig van Beethoven created a bridge between the 18th century
classical period and the new beginnings of Romanticism. His greatest
breakthroughs in composition came in his instrumental work, including
his symphonies. Unlike his predecessor Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for whom
writing music seemed to come easily, Beethoven always struggled to
perfect his work.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, and was baptized on
Dec. 17, 1770. (There is no record of his birth date.) His father and
grandfather worked as court musicians in Bonn. Ludwig s father, a
singer, gave him his early musical training. Although he had only meager ... Show more content on

Beethoven was convinced that the condition not only was permanent, but
was getting progressively worse. He spent that summer in the country and
wrote what has become known as the quot;Heiligenstadt Testament. quot; In the
document, apparently intended for his two brothers, Beethoven expressed
his humiliation and despair. For the rest of his life he searched for a
cure, but by 1819 his deafness had become total. Afterward, in order to
have conversations with his friends, Beethoven had them write down their
questions and replied orally.
Beethoven never married. Though he had many friends, he seemed to be
a lonely man. He continued to appear in public but spent more and more
of his time working on his compositions. He lived in various villages
near Vienna and took long walks carrying sketchbooks in which he would
write down his musical ideas. Scholars who have studied these
sketchbooks have discovered the agonizingly long process that the
composer went through in order to perfect his melodies, harmonies, and
instrumentations.
Three Periods of Work
Most critics divide Beethoven s work into three general periods,
omitting the earliest years of his apprenticeship in Bonn. Although some
pieces do not fit exactly into the scheme, these divisions can be used
to categorize the composer s work.
The first period, from 1794 to about 1800, consists of music whose

Archaeological Ceramics Paper
Archaeological ceramics is the most prolific relics that have been studied to expand our understanding
of past cultures. Archaeological study based on the investigation of pottery shape, color, decoration
style and materials that can give a plenty of information regarding typological and invaluable
information, dating and provenance. The study of the mineralogical properties of ceramics plays a
vital role to understand the previous technologies. However, the manufacturing techniques, cleaning
of the clays, adding of the temper, and shaping of objects, firing atmosphere can significantly change
the mineralogical composition of the ceramic objects. In addition to this, the life cycle of ceramics and
its usage and post depositional modifications are also important and can help to change the
mineralogical constitution. Although, nowadays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

methods are belongs to the investigation of the manufacturing techniques including the usages of raw
materials, clay preparation, the firing technique, and pre/post firing treatment of the ceramics.
Therefore, technological studies also deal with the provenance and dating. Mineralogical and physio

Cause And Effects Of The Haiti Earthquake
On January 12th, 2010, the small country of Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that
devastated the city of Port au Prince and surrounding areas (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). The 30
second disaster was just the beginning of a collection of aftershocks that then struck the country
relentlessly for days (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). Many areas were reduced to rubble leaving
approximately one million Haitians homeless and 350 000 dead and another 300 000 injured (Haiti
earthquake of 2010, 2015). The ill prepared country was sitting on two tectonic plates the Caribbean
and the North American, where there was slippage resulting in the earthquake (KS3 Bitesize
Geography). Following the environmental catastrophe, the international community responded, and a
relief effort began (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). Though the earthquake happened quickly, the
lasting impact and trauma remained. In an article from the Wall Street Journal, Luhnow and Dugan
stated that following the event many people went searching for psychological support and aid instead
of physical (2010). After having buildings tumble and fall onto people, many suffered from PTSD and
survivors guilt; children were the most emotionally traumatized, and there was a fundamental lack of
aid for facing psychological traumas endured by so many (Luhnow Dugan, 2010). As a society, an
increase in crime and violence is on the rise; Haitians had no defined structure in communities, and

Discuss the Reasons We Forget, and Give at Least Three...
Memory refers to the processes that are used to store, retain and later retrieve information; these
processes are known as encoding, storage and retrieval. However with memory comes the natural
phenomenon of forgetting which refers to the inability to regain, recall or recognise information that
was, or still is, stored in long term memory. There are many reasons that we forget information but
these can be grouped into four main categories; retrieval failure, interference, failure to store and
motivated forgetting (Loftus 1999). Although there are also many strategies that we can use in order to
improve our memory.
Retrieval failure is one of the most common causes of forgetting and one possible explanation of this
is known as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overall it s difficult to study scientifically whether repression is the cause of memory loss for negative
events that have occurred (Holmes 1990). Amnesia is known to be one of the most significant types of
forgetting. This occurs when someone suffers memory loss due to special conditions such as brain
injury, illness or psychological trauma . In his book Human Memory: Theory and Practice (1997)
Baddeley refers to Amnesia as not an all or nothing condition in the sense that amnesiacs can appear
to be relatively normal. He speaks of a man called Clive Wearing who, after being stricken with
encephalitis causing him to be unconscious for many weeks from an attack, suffered from Amnesia.
Although Clive looked healthy his Amnesia was so severe he couldn t remember more than a few
minutes earlier, when his wife left the room on her return he would greet her as if he d just woken
from his coma despite it being months after. Another type of forgetting is Dementia when impaired
memory and other cognitive deficits accompany brain degeneration and interfere with normal
functioning. There are many causes of dementia one of which being Alzheimer s disease which is a
progressive brain disorder most commonly found among people over the age of sixty five. This
disease spreads across temporal lobes to the frontal lobes and other cortical regions and as it
progresses working and long term memory get worse. Although there will be

New Imperialism Analysis
The New Imperialism was centered on nationalism, social Darwinism, and economic expansion. The
colonizers of the time were focused on only improving the state of their own countries and never even
paid attention to what the indigenous peoples were forced to do. All they wanted was influence and
power. On the other hand, the colonized had no control over the situation. They had no power to fight
back against the countries taking them over, and they were forced to change their way of life to the
ways of the white man. Rhodes was a perfect example of one of those colonizers, he believed that the
English were the most superior race and that the world would be better if the English took over. This
is a completely nationalistic view of

The New Pokemon League Champion, Ash, And His Partner
No sooner did the new pokemon league champion, Ash, and his partner, Pikachu, get off off their
flight in Palot Town that they went to pay a visit to their old friend Professor Oak. It had been a long
time since they last spoke to each other. As they neared the house, Ash could see Oak s lab in the
horizon. Whack! Ash was knocked forward by a sprinting figure with spiky hair who was also on his
way to Professor Oak s. The boy looked back and said, Later, Ash . It was Gary Oak, the professor s
grandson, and not one of Ash s favorite people. Ash never liked the way Gary bragged. He seemed
untrustworthy to Ash. Hey, Gary! Ash yelled as he started running after him. Ash wanted Gary to stop
and answer some questions. When they both arrived at the doorstep of Professor Oak s lab, Gary
rushed in saying he couldn t wait to tell his grandfather about meeting one of the four elite members
the Pokemon League from Kalos Region. Ash asked which member it was. Gary said, I don t know,
but his Pokemon were water types. It must have been Siebold, Ash said in a perky voice and starting
to feel excited for Gary. It s not everyday that someone has the honor of meeting one of the elite. Ash
said, I wondered where he went after I beat him. So, yeah, I m the new champion of the Kalos region.

Descartes Discourse on Method
Understanding Descartes Method of Doubt
Clear your mind, if you will, of everything you have ever seen or known to be true. To begin
understanding Rene Descartes method of doubt, you need to suspend all prejudice and prior judgments
and start with a clean slate for the purpose of discovering some ultimate truth on which to base all
thought. (Kolak, Pg.225). Discouraged with much skepticism from his own beliefs, Descartes was
embarrassed of his own ignorance. He set out to try and accomplish the task of finding an absolute
truth in which he would base his beliefs. Placing upon himself a task to find an axiom or absolute truth
to base all thought, he ventured as a youth in travel to collect a variety in experiences to derive some
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He basically states in his meditations that if there is a God, and he is perceived as good, why would he
deceive our thoughts? This brings up the evil deceiver argument. If we can only know that our
existence is real, who is to say that there is not an outside force that makes of the rest of our reality
that we supposedly live? If our dreams are just distorted pieces of our reality and our reality is merely
a show put on by the evil deceiver, we know for certain we cannot base our beliefs on what we see and
the tools unto which we use to perceive it; i.e. extension, hands, and eyes.
Conclusion
Descartes makes it clear that we cannot be certain of anything. The method of doubt brings us to
understand this better by giving a set of guidelines to follow to systematically understand and get
closer to some kind of truth. By trying to find some truth to base all thoughts on, Descartes tried to
find an absolute truth by coming to the realization that nothing he believed was of any truth. Although
not finding much truth in his journeys, he found a systematic way to come closer to finding truth.
Descartes was presented with a problem of not knowing anything, and by creating the method of
doubt he came closer to finding the truth.

A series of small bunds are made across selected nala sections such that the flow of surface water in
the stream channel is impeded and water is retained on pervious soil/rock surface for longer period.
Nala bunds are constructed across bigger nalas of second order streams in areas having gentler slopes.
A nala bund acts like a mini percolation tank.
Horizontal Section of Nala Bund
Vertical Section of Nala Bund
Site Characteristic and Design Guidelines
The total catchment of the nala should normally be between 40 to 100 Hectares. The rainfall in the
catchment should be 25 m). Aquifer is over lain by impervious thick clay beds. Injection well can be
with or without assembly. The Injection well with assembly should have screen in the potential aquifer
at least 3 5 m below the water level. The injection well without assembly is filled with gravel to
provide hydraulic continuity so that water is directly recharged into the aquifer.

Blood Meridian Essay
In Blood Meridian, Cormac McCarthy describes a lawless and godless group of men ordained to
cleanse the West of lesser people. This group wanders through the West leaving a trail of slaughtered
people in their trail. The emptiness and ruthlessness of their hearts is reflected in the harsh and
unforgiving landscape. McCarthy uses reoccurring themes of war, religion, and dance to paint a
graphic picture of the savageness of life in the West.
As men ordained on a mission, Glanton s Gang is paid to seek out the scalps of Apaches and return
them to the Mexican town of Chihuahua City. The gang quickly moves beyond the killing of Indians
to include Mexicans, Americans, and whoever else crosses their path. The men are killing on their

Whatever Holden judges, it is not written law. It is an unwritten law, the law of death and evil. Judge
Holden represents a demonic character, larger than life, with a cruel soul.
The Imbecile, James Robert, exemplifies the Judge s god like power. Once the Judge rescues James
from drowning and after a sort of mock baptism, the once wild man becomes docile and shadows the
Judge s every movement. Judge Holden leading the imbecile around on a leash is similar to a king
being followed by his fool. The imbecile is another creature the Judge controls by allowing to exist.
One reason he allows the imbecile to live, while killing so many others, may be as a way to show his
superiority to Glanton. While Glanton has a mere dog as a pet, the Judge has an actual human as a pet.
Another example of Judge Holden s god like behavior occurs as he is pursuing the Kid and Tobin.
Throughout the novel, whenever the Judge set out to accomplish a task, he succeeds. While the Kid is
drinking water in the bone filled ravine, the Judge shoots at the Kid and misses. The Judge is an
excellent marksman and has a clear shot. However, at this point, he allows the Kid to live. Instead of
shooting to kill, the Judge s shot serves as a way to control the Kid; to maintain his suzerainty over the
weakest member of the group.
Judge Holden controls through destruction and pure evil, only he perseveres and triumphs, while
others fail, including the Kid.

Many Hawaiians felt a deep connection with nature and explained everything from the creation of the
Earth to the lava flowing from the volcanoes and it s importance in their lives and culture. Moana, the
adventurous daughter of the chief of their village, the island of Motuni, goes on a mission to save their
island from perishing through the poison of Te Ka, a volcanic demon, portrayed as the villain
throughout the movie. Because the heart of Te Fitte was stolen by Maui, the shapeshifting demigod,
the islands of Hawaii slowly began deteriorating and livelihoods were affected which prompted
Moana to go on a mission. For Moana, leaving the island not only gave her the opportunity of
exploring the world beyond hers, but also explore herself and find meaning to her existence in the
world. If it wasn t for Moana s love of nature and her people, she wouldn t have left the islands in fear
of upsetting her father. For the people of the island, nature not only provided food, water, medicine,
and shelter but their belief system also revolved around it. The cultural depiction of nature throughout
the movie makes a significant impact to its viewers because it also allows us to understand why nature
plays a huge role culturally for the indigenous people of

McCarthy spent almost 5 years trying in vain to expose communists and other left wing loyalty risks
in the US government. McCarthy accusations were so intimidating a few people dared to speak out
against him. A practice of making accusations of treason became to be known as McCarthyism, which
was also known as the Red Scare . The McCarthyism era ended on June 9, 1954. The play The
Crucible drew many parallels to Mccarthyism. The Crucible: A crucible is a container of metal or
refractory material employed for heating substances to high temperatures. But it is more famously
known as a severe, searching test or trial. Salem s motto featured on their website is Still Making
History . One main way to better understand the period and the trials themselves is to understand the
time period. Back in those days different people s word could mean different things. Such as a person
who was of major importance words would mean a lot more than a person who was not as important

Muscular Necrosis Essay
Ultimately, avascular necrosis occurs through one final common pathway, which is decreased blood
flow to the bone that leads to bone ischemia and death (Seamon). The medial femoral circumflex
artery provides the primary blood supply to the femoral head. The MFCA branches off from the
profunda femoris artery and anastomoses, or cross connects, with branches of the lateral femoral
circumflex and inferior gluteal arteries in order to form an extracapsular arterial ring at the base of the
femoral neck (Glynn). Blood is supplied to the femoral head by retinacular vessels that originate at the
arterial ring and travel subsynovially along the capsule of the hip joint. The femoral nutrient artery has
additional intraosseous vessels that travel from the femoral nutrient artery to the femoral head. The
artery of the ligamentum teres derived from the obturator artery and occasionally from the MFCA also
supplies a small yet valuable portion of blood to the medial femoral head (Grose). Avascular necrosis
of the femoral head occurs when any of these blood supplies are affected.
Ischemia of the femoral head can be caused by compression, constriction, vascular disruption or an
intravascular occlusion (Van heil). There are several factors that can contribute to the development of
AVN, but the exact etiology and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Institutional Discrimination Within The United States Of...
According to the text The Borderlands refers to the area of common culture along the boarder between
the United States of America and Mexico. The story mostly talks about the emergence of
maquiladoras on the Mexican side. Maquiladoras are foreign owned factories established just across
the boarder in Mexico. The first core concept that comes to mind when reading the borderlands is 1.
Institutional discrimination. Institutional discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights
to individuals and groups that results from the normal operations of a society. The reason I incorporate
Institutional discrimination into this is because the factories that are in the borderlands did not provide
insurance or benefits to workers simple because they didn t have to. The factories are denying not only
equal rights but no rights at all by not giving their workers insurance or benefits. The second core
concept is 2. Class. Class is a group of people who have similar level of wealth and income. Class can
be incorporated here because in mid 2007 1.2 million people worked in the maquiladoras. The daily
take home pay for entry level workers was $3. Entry level workers were in a a class of their own. The
third core concept is 3. Glass Ceiling. Glass ceiling is an invisible barrier that blocks the promotion of
a qualified individual in a work environment because of the individuals gender , race or ethnicity.
Many workers in the maquiladoras were not given the chance

Intimate Partner Violence Case Study

attending MCH services in Melbourne.
Project aims and significance
Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been recognised as an issue which needs to be addressed due to its
negative consequences on health of individuals. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) as any act between intimate relations which results into physical,
emotional, sexual trauma or any other form of restriction or isolation from family and friends which
can lead to undesirable health outcomes (Organization, 2012). Violence do exists between intimate
partners with women becoming more victims than men (Hall, Chappell, Parnell, Seed, Bewley, 2014).
In Victoria, it had accounted for 7.9% of overall disease burden among women of reproductive age
(Vos et al., 2006). According to WHO global report on violence, more than 35% of women experience
both physical and sexual abuse by intimate partners which represents a large proportion of all types of

Seven Basic Face Shape
Choosing glasses that suit the shape of your face is important for both comfort and aesthetics. There
are seven basic face shapes to consider when it comes to eyeglasses, and taking the time to determine
which shape your face is will help you pick the right pair of glasses for you.
The seven different face shapes are oval, diamond, square, round, triangle, inverted triangle and
oblong. To start your calculation, have a basic, passport style photo of yourself taken by a friend or
family member and draw six dots on the picture. Draw two dots on each side of your forehead, two
dots on your cheekbones near your eyes and two dots on your jaw line at the level of your mouth.
Next, check the dots to figure out your face shape and help figure out which eyeglasses to choose. For
an oval shape, the dots will be farthest apart on your cheekbones and equally spaced on your jaw and
forehead, making it longer that it is wide. The diamond shape resembles an oval, but the jaw and
forehead dots will be closer together. The dots are farthest apart on the cheekbones of a round face,
with the forehead and jaw closer together so the width and height of the face are about the same. For a
square face, all three pairs of dots are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Typography And The Printing Press
1. Typography Typography, according to Preece and Wells, is the design or selection of letter forms to
be organized into words and sentences for printing upon a page. Furthermore, the practice of
typography goes beyond the creation of the type or the font. According to Preece and Wells,
typography includes paper selection, the choice of ink to be used in printing, the printing method, and
the binding process in cases where the printed material is a book. Although the use of typography
became drastically more popular during the invention of the printing press in the mid fifteenth century,
the use of typography goes beyond this period in history. Before the invention of the concept of
typography, writing was already a popular form of visual communication, the history of which dates to
the use of hieroglyphs or pictograms in ancient times (Siebert). Per John Siebert, before the invention
of the printing press which revolutionized the practice of typography, the alphabets, and phonographic
writing, these ancient forms of writing were used by civilizations to express their ideas. The very first
recorded examples of written communication were the ancient cave paintings dating back around
20,000 years; however, the first forms of formal writing were invented by the Sumerians around 3500
B.C (Siebert). According to John Siebert, ancient writing systems grew more complex as civilizations
began to advance. Ancient Egyptians incorporated symbols and ideograms into their structures

Battle Of The Sexes Analysis
The Battle of the Sexes Sherlock Holmes is the fundamental character of the wrongdoing/puzzle novel
and scene arrangement. Holmes demonstrates the way his observational aptitudes help him to prevail
as an investigator. Holmes is considered to demonstrate no feeling along these lines, directing him as
the machine . Holmes demonstrates a ton of routes on how he makes sense of the cases he researches.
The viewer can see the connection amongst Adler and Holmes indicates the way they tend to each
other. In the film Holmes demonstrates his character is more observational than in the story. Holmes
communicates his observational abilities and apathetic traits diversely in A Scandal in Bohemia than
in A Scandal in Belgravia .
The short story A Scandal in Bohemia concentrates on how Irene Adler breaks Sherlock Holmes
down. Sherlock Holmes is known for being the most brilliant individual in the room. Holmes never
needs to stress over somebody out hurting him, until the point when he meets the woman . Everybody
knows Holmes to be the man that knows how to explain any case that is tossed at him, aside from in
this one. In the story, Holmes is procured to make sense of where Adler has the critical photos covered
up. Holmes goes to discover Adler, however discovers she has been away for some time. Adler leaves
a snapshot and letter for Holmes. Knowing Holmes as the best criminologist ever, he has never been

the capacity to deceive him. Men are customized uniquely in contrast to ladies which influences
Holmes self image to diminish by being incited by a lady, the best plans of Mr. Sherlock Holmes were

then gets him to crumble. Perusers can tell that Holmes feels like he lost his heart or soul. Watson
says, And when he speaks of Irene Adler, or when he refers to her photograph, it is always under the
honourable title of the woman (26). After him coming up short, Holmes still alludes to her as the
woman rather than Irene Adler. Holmes can t even mention Alders name which the reader can tell how

killed by the Mormon militia aided by Indians. This essay examines two viewpoints regarding the
massacre found in Sally Denton s American Massacre and in Massacre at Mountain Meadows by
Ronald W. Walker, Richard E. Turley, and Glen M. Turley. September 7, 1857, the emigrants of the
Fancher Baker train were just awakening and preparing for the day when gunshots were sounded. The
emigrants were caught by surprise and immediately fortified themselves with their wagons. For days
they were harassed, lacking food and water. Finally a Mormon leader by the name of John D. Lee

She states that Young s church elders swept through the outlying communities and scrutinized those
who were found lacking (Denton 105). Denton then focuses on the revival of blood atonement, and
how it struck fear in the saints. She points out that Mormons tried to flee after the reformation was in
progress, but were hunted down and killed (Denton, 106). In her book she talks about how the church
had more problems, stating that the church was on the brink of bankruptcy, and with apostates and
internal dissenters at an all time high (Denton 107). Denton uses all of these radical statements to
illustrate and give readers an understanding of why there was tension among the Mormons. Walker,
Turley, and Leonard explain the reasons for high tension in Utah a different way. Instead of focusing
about problems with the church like Denton, they explain about things happening around the church.

King Asok Not More Than A Myth Essay
For a long time, King Asoka was thought to be nothing more than a myth. With several writings
concerning him, they all relayed too fantastical an image to be convincing as truthful, keeping him in a
legendary status. This all changed in 1837, well over a thousand years after his death, when a scholar
James Prinsep managed to translate writings on a stone pillar in Delhi. After several other scholars
raced to translate similar writings all over the Indian landscape, it was revealed that this King Piyadasi
was the same as King Asoka. Even with his history pieced together, Asoka s history is still legendary.
He started as a lowly person shunned by his own father and grew to be a ruler of a kingdom that had
never seen complete unity. But indeed, despite the face of caring compassion he attempted to convey
to the Indian people, and despite the reforms he made to various sectors of his kingdom, it is clear
Asoka was only using Buddhism as a way to unite the people and, more importantly, keep them under
his control. It is rumored that Asoka s grandmother was a Greek princess, with his lineage being traced
back to the Seleucus kingship, and that his Asoka s grandmother would have told him stories of
Alexander the Great and other Greek warriors, inspiring Asoka and gearing him towards being the
warrior he would become in the Kalinga Wars. Asoka s mother is supposed to be the daughter of a
Brahman, a Hindu priest. She eventually married the King of India, one of the first of the

Permian Extinction
Over the course of its 4.5 billion year history, the Earth has seen the rise and fall of many populations
of organisms. However, in Earth s history, there have been five big mass extinction events,
characterized as periods in Earth s history when abnormally large numbers of species die out
simultaneously or within a limited time frame. (BBC) These events are cataclysmic enough to wipeout
at least 50% of all organisms living during that period. The causes of mass extinction are many from
the asteroids that sealed the fate of the dinosaurs to the volcanoes that choked out air to 96% of the
organismic population during the Permian extinction, however one of the most recent yet potent
mechanisms of bringing upon a mass extinction are humans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the span of 50 years, the population of humans on this planet have reached all time highs and
continue to rise and with this rise comes the effects of overpopulation. The planet cannot sustain so
many people during such a short span of time. Not only is there a loss of space for new generations of
humans to live on, but there has been an excessive use of natural resources before there is a chance to
replenish them such as food, natural gases, and water. The problem of overpopulation seems to truly
encompasses all other aspects of the factors leading to the sixth mass extinction such as habitat loss
and global warming. The population must be feed and because of this, million upon millions of acres
of land once inhabited by a whole ecosystem have been converted to farmland to provide food for the
growing population. In addition, the increase in leads to an increase in waste and therein arises a
problem: where to put the waste. In the United States alone, 4.39 pounds of trash per day and up to 56
tons of trash per year are created by the average person Landfills seemed to be the perfect solution for
this problem, however, over the years, landfill managers have been emphasizing just how quickly they
are running out of space. The more people there are on the planet, the more waste is being produced.
Some of this waste is quite toxic, and even landfills which are

Sigmund Freud, The Founder Of Psychoanalysis, Used A...
Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, used a psychodynamic approach of understand the
development of a person. He theorized that psychic determinism dominates the personality process.
Therefore, all thought process in the mind are based on the unconscious or preconscious, things that
called be recalled, which then becomes conscious. A person s unconscious is much larger than their
preconscious and their conscious is limited. The personality structure is designated into three facets
the ID, Ego and Super Ego. These three functions compete with one another to create an individual s
personality and their actions. In Freud s perception, the greatest system is the ID, which resides in the

Getting out of bed will lead to earning a salary or gaining an education. Going back to sleep may feel
good but can negatively affect their job or schooling. People use judgement to outweigh the
consequences. Stimulus barrier, another ego functioning, is the skill of regulating or blocking stimulus
to concentrate on a targeted task. New Yorkers use stimulus barrier daily as car horns, sirens,
skyscrapers, city lights and conversations fill the streets. One must filter out most of the noise and
sights to not become overly stimulated. Freud also believed impulse control and regulation was an ego
function. This function regulates the person s feelings, desires and drives. Impulse control and
regulation is enacted when the person choses a healthy lunch and decides to not partake in junk food.
Although they may desire it, they have enough control to not have the unhealthy meal. When the
individual is in a stressful situation, Freud theorized that the ego employs defense mechanisms.
Defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological coping skills. Some of these defenses are denial,
intellectualization/rationalization, reaction formation and projection. Denial is the inability to accept
reality. It is considered one of the most primitive, yet can be detrimental if sustained long term. Some
people can accept the traumatic or stressful event but are unable to connect an emotion or feeling to it.

Comparing Douglas Adams Difficulty With My Life-Style
1. Douglas Adams uses cause and effect to make a persuasive agrument about the relative impact of
the an action by explaining cause and effect is a never ending cycle. Adam s text is shows how people
actions can effect people/things and aren t consciously aware of how this effect people every day life.
There is nothing that can be done to prevent the effects of the actions that are being taken it is just a
part of life. Arthur said, I seem to be having a tremendous difficulty with my life style by Arthur

A rhetorial similarity between The Penultimate Peril and The Hitchiker s Guide is both texts argue that
cause and effect have a cycle that keeps going and certain things led to something and than back
again. Peoples actions determine the different outcomes that a person decides to do. Than the
outcomes have other outcomes and that continues to go in a circle. A difference between the two texts
is Adams thinks each individual cause has a specific outcome while Snickets thinks an action can have
many outcomes. In The Hitchiker s Guide the reader can see there is only one cause to why everything
happen he is more specific in his story. In The Penultimate Peril Snickets the reader can see the
mysteries could have been solved in many ways. Snikets follow the basic rule of cause and effect
which shows any effect can have multiple possible causes; the task of cause and effect is to determine
the correct one. Snicket made a metaphor to that when he said, the world is like a calm pond, and that
anytime a person does even the smallest thing, it is as if a stone has dropped into the pond, spreading
circles of ripples further and further out, until the entire world has been changed by one tiny action.
One action can have many possibles to be

How can anyone blow through millions of dollars in a few years? According to a 2009 Sports

Basketball Association (NBA) players face the same results within five years of retiring from the

bottom financially soon after leaving the league. Former star athletes such as Mike Tyson, Michael

reasons. Athletes are known for having fancy lifestyles. Once entering the league, they feel required to

Autotrophs Research Paper
Autotrophs are able to store chemical energy in food molecules they build themselves. Food is
chemical energy stored in organic molecules, it provides both the energy to do work and the carbon to

is called photosynthesis. There are only three groups of organisms are capable of this energy
transformation: plants, algae, and some bacteria. Autotrophs make food for their own use, but they

Sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar Essays
At a point in time in the life of every person, a feeling of being trapped or stuck occurs. The poem
Sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar represents the speaker s vast knowledge of the feeling of being
enclosed in a place where they are tremendously uncomfortable. The speaker explains the actions of a
bird trapped in a small cage and explains the motives behind the actions. The speaker reveals that the
song the caged bird sings is not a melody exuberating joy, but a cry begging for freedom. The title of
the poem, Sympathy , represents the feeling that the speaker has toward a bird enclosed in a cage. The
speaker relates to the bird by repeating the words I know and following them with an action of the
bird, revealing that he has also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bird then returns to his former place in the cage, the speaker emphasizing the pain in the bird s
old, old scars , imparting that the bird has attempted to escape in this manner multiple times in the
past. From the line in which the speaker says And they pulse again with a keener sting, which refers to
the bird s scars, the reader can assume that the keener sting is a fire in the bird s wings fueled by
determination to achieve freedom, and that the bird will continue attempting to escape relentlessly.
The speaker states that he knows why he beats his wing , meaning that he knows the forces that can
drive a creature to harm themselves in the process of trying to achieve something, and he has come in
contact with those forces in his life. Lastly, the speaker talks of the motive behind the caged bird s
song. When people hear birds singing in nature, or in cages, they often assume that the bird is singing
a jocose tune. People typically fail to analyze the potential emotions of the bird and its feelings toward
its environment. Rather than singing a tune of joy, the caged bird sings a tragic melody of sorrow, a
desperate cry for freedom. When the speaker says a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings , he is
alluding to God and Heaven, to which the bird directs his cries in the hope that they will be heard. The
attitude that the speaker has towards the woeful bird is, as the title says, sympathetic. The speaker is

The Tragedy of Syria
It was two am in the morning and I couldn t sleep yet. Hours separated us from changing history. It
was extremely hard to control the thoughts spinning in my mind,
What will happen tomorrow? , Is it a start of a new life? I finally slept dreaming that there will be a
new sunrise tomorrow, a sunrise after decades of darkness.
I woke up the next day as eager as possible and went to school. All day thoughts were still going back
and forth. Will we be able to make it? I think I am just over ambitious and it will be a normal day .
Rushing back home after school, I entered my home and opened the news and there it was A protest in

my heart. Feelings of happiness, anxiety, tension, and fear were all bumping inside me. A protest in

accurately, March 15 2011.

The Third Movement Of Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach lived in Leipzig from 1723 until his death in 1750. In Leipzig, he was the
music director of the Collegium Musicum, which presented a series of evening concerts that brought
visitors and musical talent to the city. An example of the repertoire presented in these concerts would
be Bach s harpsichord concertos, which were arrangements of other concertos for different
instruments. According to Pankratz, these concertos (both for the original instrument and harpsichord)
were written with didactic purposes, meaning that they were supposed to help the students improve
their musical skills. Following Pankratz s idea of Bach being a music director with instructive goals,
this paper suggests that the third movement of the Harpsichord Concerto No.5 in F minor, BWV 1056
by Johann Sebastian Bach is a prime example of his pedagogic influence in Leipzig, represented by
the constant interaction between the soloist and the ripieno. This is symbolic of the teacher student
relation Bach had with the students, as he would often be the solo performer in the evening concerts
and the students would play the ripieno parts.
The interaction between the soloist and the ripieno comes in various forms: advanced counterpoint,
dynamics, dialogue, and/or harmonic changes. The work features three ritornello themes in which we
find all these interactions. The first theme (R1) is the main theme and it is four measures long. The
interaction is presented with the soloist simply playing

B) Federal mandates have been used to increase the power of the federal government over the states as
with a federal mandate, the nation government (federal government) tells the state government which
policies to carry out and the state government(s) have to follow through with the mandate. With this,
the federal government does not always give the state government(s) the necessities for the mandate to

In the years following his directorial debut for I Killed My Mother (09) at the age of only 19, Xavier

languages belonging to the people in the Niger Congo. Cultural influences that occurred, due to the
migration of the Bantu people, laid out the foundation for other Sub Saharan societies. Historians have
used the collective information found by archeologists and other historians in order to draw
conclusions about the Bantu Migration. Linguistics, agriculture, and different types of art have been
the evidence needed to identify the culture and the specific patterns of movement, during this period.
Bantu speaking farmers are known to have spread through the Congo forests by the first millennium.
The rapid spread of the Bantu people became evident in the fifth century; the iron working and crop
cultivation of pumpkins, melons, and beans had become wide spread in central, eastern, and southern
Africa. Although crop cultivation is an efficient way to track movement patterns, this paper will focus
on the linguistics, genetics, and various art forms used to track the dispersal. Oral communication used
by the Bantu people was one of the only ways to relay information. Verbal communication and the
study of linguistics, in the instance of the Bantu Migration can be obscured because over familial
generations and time the language changes, forms its own dialect, and develops for

Student-Teacher Relationships in Teacher Program Education s
The learning contained in this example may result unsubstantial for many readers but, in essence, it
illustrates a genuine piece of knowledge that is often displayed in schools and has been long time
neglected in Teacher Education Programs. Making the student to use the dictionary may be not among
any canonical response to the problem (not knowing the concept of condensation). It may be thought
that it should have been better to tell the Student Teacher to prepare more consciously the key
concepts of the lesson next time. We agree. But we also believe that any form of knowledge should be
considered valid as far as it is useful when dealing with practical situations. For us we have in this
example, in the very end, an expert teacher s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mentoring interactions portray habitual classroom situations that help thinking over particular
Student Teachers performance (Clarke, 2001) eliciting, as a consequence, tacit knowledge that is only
in the expert teacher mind. These genuine interactions between an expert teacher and a student teacher
triggers critical reflection processes on teaching experiences and invites to further think of what can be
done in similar future situations. In this chapter our objective is twofold: On one hand we aim at (1)
stressing the relevance of seizing the practical knowledge that emerge in mentoring conversations as
the one contained in the previous example leaving other aspects of the interaction behind (i.e. personal
engagement, emotional commitment, roles, etc.); and, on the other hand, (2) describing a possible
procedure that may help to make that practical knowledge not only explicit but also understandable
and useful for other teachers. Along these lines, and according to the objectives, we will structure the
chapter into two major sections: theoretical underpinnings in teacher mentoring; and methods to
analyze mentoring interactions. The first one will revolve around positioning research efforts around
three main viewpoints and highlighting the branch that actually stress that mentoring is a form of
making expert teachers practical knowledge accessible/explicit. We will end that section by stating
that practical knowledge not only

Jay Gatsby and the American Dream
Jay Gatsby and the American Dream The Great Gatsby is a very famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald
that goes back to the 1920 s. The book is narrated by a man who actually witnessed the events and
took part in these events, and his name is Nick Carraway. Through his narration, we learn about a man
whose real man is James Gatz, but he goes by the name Jay Gatsby. He continuously calls people old
sport. (Fitzgerald, 161) He lives in a mansion on West Egg near where Nick lives. He was raised on a
farm with a poor family in North Dakota. This makes us wonder how he rose to having such fortune.
Well he did do it illegally, as in this time period; it was one way people made money if they could not
do it any other way. As his life progressed, he became interested in other women; we find out later that
he really loved Daisy Buchanan for a while. Daisy is a sweet beautiful young lady that Tom married
when Jay was looking to get an education. He would throw parties all the time to achieve one ultimate
goal and that was to get Daisy to fall in love with him, and achieving his version of the American
Dream with Daisy is a goal that Jay wanted to achieve but there were a couple of obstacles in the way.
Gatsby s small goal in order to achieve his ultimate goal was to become wealthy, and he did with bad
intentions. When Tom had already been married to Daisy, it increased the determination of Jay to get
her. It does not make a lot of sense, but this is what he wanted to do in order to

Analysis Of The Article Heart Of Darkness Essay
determiner: Words such as a/an, the, some, and my are determiners, which are utilized to determine
what nouns mean. A/an and the can be considered to be the most significant determiners. A/an and the
also are known as articles. A more comprehensive list of determiners would include any, each, every,
no, his, this/that, these/those, his, her, its, your, our, and their. A concept basic to articles is
countability, and they pose difficult challenges for L2 learners regarding, for example, which nouns
are countable or uncountable in English since countability, while very important, can be difficult to
quantify. An example regarding the use of the article would be the novel Heart of Darkness. Not
having an article at the beginning of this title appears to be more a matter of style than grammar, and
also is a characteristic of headlines, titles, and names. So while conventionally a countable noun (such
as heart) needs a determiner (the, a, this, or my), not applying this rule could be confusing to an L2
learner expecting an article.
2. perfective: In English, there are two aspects (see next entry for a definition of aspect ) perfect (also
called perfective) and continuous (also termed progressive). The perfect aspect establishes a
connection between two periods of time while the continuous aspect typically connotes that an activity
still is occurring, is seen from a specific juncture in time, and the verbs employed are those typically

JULY 15TH DEADLINE LOOMING, DOES DEZ BRYANT REALLY DESERVE ALL THE
CONTRACT HE IS ASKING FOR?? For more than a week there has been talk all over the league
about Dez Bryant and the Cowboys possibly reaching a long awaited agreement that would make the
Dallas Cowboys organization happy but most importantly make Dez feel like he is wanted and
appreciated. July 15th is the last day to reach an agreement on a long term contract. Once this day
passes they wont be able to start up talks again until January 3 2016 when the 2015 regular season
ends. Most are saying that both sides will most likely remain at a stand still until the deadline
approaches. Well folks, here we are. The deadline is days away and there have been no credible

Back in May of 2014, Dez called him self one of the best receivers in the NFL, and he is ready to get
paid like one. Everyone had something to say about that at the time as well. Calling him cocky and
arrogant He answered his haters by catching 88 balls for 1320 yards and 16 touchdowns this last
season. He not only lead the NFL with receiving touchdowns last year. but his remarkable 56
touchdowns in the last five season is the best and leads all the receivers currently in the league. Dez
Bryant is arguably the best wide receiver in the league. Although only ignorant people would argue
with that statement. Probably the same ignorant people that placed him at number 15 in the leagues
Top 100 . Anyways besides the point. Bryant has played his heart out he doesn t just bring record
breaking numbers, he brings a rare talent and an undeniable passion to the Cowboys team. He is
looked up to on both sides of the ball. Coaches, teammates and fans alike would be devastated to see

  • 2. Ludwig Van Beethoven Essay The composer of some of the most influential pieces of music ever written, Ludwig van Beethoven created a bridge between the 18th century classical period and the new beginnings of Romanticism. His greatest breakthroughs in composition came in his instrumental work, including his symphonies. Unlike his predecessor Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for whom writing music seemed to come easily, Beethoven always struggled to perfect his work. For the rest of his life he searched for a cure, but by 1819 his deafness had become total. Afterward, in order to have conversations with his friends, Beethoven had them write down their questions and replied orally.
  • 3. Beethoven never married. Though he had many friends, he seemed to be a lonely man. He continued to appear in public but spent more and more of his time working on his compositions. He lived in various villages near Vienna and took long walks carrying sketchbooks in which he would write down his musical ideas. Scholars who have studied these sketchbooks have discovered the agonizingly long process that the composer went through in order to perfect his melodies, harmonies, and instrumentations. Three Periods of Work Most critics divide Beethoven s work into three general periods, omitting the earliest years of his apprenticeship in Bonn. Although some pieces do not fit exactly into the scheme, these divisions can be used to categorize the composer s work. After having buildings tumble and fall onto people, many suffered from PTSD and survivors guilt; children were the most emotionally traumatized, and there was a fundamental lack of aid for facing psychological traumas endured by so many (Luhnow Dugan, 2010). • 6. Discuss the Reasons We Forget, and Give at Least Three... Memory refers to the processes that are used to store, retain and later retrieve information; these processes are known as encoding, storage and retrieval. However with memory comes the natural phenomenon of forgetting which refers to the inability to regain, recall or recognise information that was, or still is, stored in long term memory. There are many reasons that we forget information but these can be grouped into four main categories; retrieval failure, interference, failure to store and motivated forgetting (Loftus 1999). Although there are also many strategies that we can use in order to improve our memory. Overall it s difficult to study scientifically whether repression is the cause of memory loss for negative events that have occurred (Holmes 1990). Amnesia is known to be one of the most significant types of forgetting. This occurs when someone suffers memory loss due to special conditions such as brain injury, illness or psychological trauma . In his book Human Memory: Theory and Practice (1997) Baddeley refers to Amnesia as not an all or nothing condition in the sense that amnesiacs can appear to be relatively normal. He speaks of a man called Clive Wearing who, after being stricken with encephalitis causing him to be unconscious for many weeks from an attack, suffered from Amnesia. Although Clive looked healthy his Amnesia was so severe he couldn t remember more than a few minutes earlier, when his wife left the room on her return he would greet her as if he d just woken from his coma despite it being months after. Another type of forgetting is Dementia when impaired memory and other cognitive deficits accompany brain degeneration and interfere with normal functioning. There are many causes of dementia one of which being Alzheimer s disease which is a progressive brain disorder most commonly found among people over the age of sixty five. This disease spreads across temporal lobes to the frontal lobes and other cortical regions and as it progresses working and long term memory get worse. Although there will be ... To begin understanding Rene Descartes method of doubt, you need to suspend all prejudice and prior judgments and start with a clean slate for the purpose of discovering some ultimate truth on which to base all thought. (Kolak, Pg.225). Discouraged with much skepticism from his own beliefs, Descartes was embarrassed of his own ignorance. He set out to try and accomplish the task of finding an absolute truth in which he would base his beliefs. Placing upon himself a task to find an axiom or absolute truth to base all thought, he ventured as a youth in travel to collect a variety in experiences to derive some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He basically states in his meditations that if there is a God, and he is perceived as good, why would he deceive our thoughts? This brings up the evil deceiver argument. If we can only know that our existence is real, who is to say that there is not an outside force that makes of the rest of our reality that we supposedly live? If our dreams are just distorted pieces of our reality and our reality is merely a show put on by the evil deceiver, we know for certain we cannot base our beliefs on what we see and the tools unto which we use to perceive it; i.e. extension, hands, and eyes. Conclusion Descartes makes it clear that we cannot be certain of anything. The method of doubt brings us to understand this better by giving a set of guidelines to follow to systematically understand and get closer to some kind of truth. By trying to find some truth to base all thoughts on, Descartes tried to find an absolute truth by coming to the realization that nothing he believed was of any truth. Although not finding much truth in his journeys, he found a systematic way to come closer to finding truth. Descartes was presented with a problem of not knowing anything, and by creating the method of doubt he came closer to finding the truth. Works Cited Page Durant, Will Ariel. (1961). Whatever Holden judges, it is not written law. It is an unwritten law, the law of death and evil. Judge Holden represents a demonic character, larger than life, with a cruel soul. The Imbecile, James Robert, exemplifies the Judge s god like power. Once the Judge rescues James from drowning and after a sort of mock baptism, the once wild man becomes docile and shadows the Judge s every movement. Judge Holden leading the imbecile around on a leash is similar to a king being followed by his fool. The imbecile is another creature the Judge controls by allowing to exist. One reason he allows the imbecile to live, while killing so many others, may be as a way to show his superiority to Glanton. While Glanton has a mere dog as a pet, the Judge has an actual human as a pet. Another example of Judge Holden s god like behavior occurs as he is pursuing the Kid and Tobin. Throughout the novel, whenever the Judge set out to accomplish a task, he succeeds. While the Kid is drinking water in the bone filled ravine, the Judge shoots at the Kid and misses. The Judge is an excellent marksman and has a clear shot. However, at this point, he allows the Kid to live. • 15. Muscular Necrosis Essay Ultimately, avascular necrosis occurs through one final common pathway, which is decreased blood flow to the bone that leads to bone ischemia and death (Seamon). The medial femoral circumflex artery provides the primary blood supply to the femoral head. The MFCA branches off from the profunda femoris artery and anastomoses, or cross connects, with branches of the lateral femoral circumflex and inferior gluteal arteries in order to form an extracapsular arterial ring at the base of the femoral neck (Glynn). Blood is supplied to the femoral head by retinacular vessels that originate at the arterial ring and travel subsynovially along the capsule of the hip joint. The femoral nutrient artery has additional intraosseous vessels that travel from the femoral nutrient artery to the femoral head. The artery of the ligamentum teres derived from the obturator artery and occasionally from the MFCA also supplies a small yet valuable portion of blood to the medial femoral head (Grose). Avascular necrosis of the femoral head occurs when any of these blood supplies are affected. • 16. Institutional Discrimination Within The United States Of... According to the text The Borderlands refers to the area of common culture along the boarder between the United States of America and Mexico. The story mostly talks about the emergence of maquiladoras on the Mexican side. Maquiladoras are foreign owned factories established just across the boarder in Mexico. The first core concept that comes to mind when reading the borderlands is 1. Institutional discrimination. Institutional discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups that results from the normal operations of a society. The reason I incorporate Institutional discrimination into this is because the factories that are in the borderlands did not provide insurance or benefits to workers simple because they didn t have to. The factories are denying not only equal rights but no rights at all by not giving their workers insurance or benefits. The second core concept is 2. Class. Class is a group of people who have similar level of wealth and income. Class can be incorporated here because in mid 2007 1.2 million people worked in the maquiladoras. The daily take home pay for entry level workers was $3. Entry level workers were in a a class of their own. The third core concept is 3. Glass Ceiling. This all changed in 1837, well over a thousand years after his death, when a scholar James Prinsep managed to translate writings on a stone pillar in Delhi. After several other scholars raced to translate similar writings all over the Indian landscape, it was revealed that this King Piyadasi was the same as King Asoka. The population must be feed and because of this, million upon millions of acres of land once inhabited by a whole ecosystem have been converted to farmland to provide food for the growing population. In the United States alone, 4.39 pounds of trash per day and up to 56 tons of trash per year are created by the average person Landfills seemed to be the perfect solution for this problem, however, over the years, landfill managers have been emphasizing just how quickly they are running out of space. Although they may desire it, they have enough control to not have the unhealthy meal. When the individual is in a stressful situation, Freud theorized that the ego employs defense mechanisms. Defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological coping skills. Some of these defenses are denial, intellectualization/rationalization, reaction formation and projection. The poem Sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar represents the speaker s vast knowledge of the feeling of being enclosed in a place where they are tremendously uncomfortable. The speaker explains the actions of a bird trapped in a small cage and explains the motives behind the actions. The speaker reveals that the song the caged bird sings is not a melody exuberating joy, but a cry begging for freedom. The speaker states that he knows why he beats his wing , meaning that he knows the forces that can drive a creature to harm themselves in the process of trying to achieve something, and he has come in contact with those forces in his life. Lastly, the speaker talks of the motive behind the caged bird s song. When people hear birds singing in nature, or in cages, they often assume that the bird is singing a jocose tune. People typically fail to analyze the potential emotions of the bird and its feelings toward its environment. Rather than singing a tune of joy, the caged bird sings a tragic melody of sorrow, a desperate cry for freedom. When the speaker says a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings , he is alluding to God and Heaven, to which the bird directs his cries in the hope that they will be heard. • 31. The Third Movement Of Johann Sebastian Bach Johann Sebastian Bach lived in Leipzig from 1723 until his death in 1750. In Leipzig, he was the music director of the Collegium Musicum, which presented a series of evening concerts that brought visitors and musical talent to the city. An example of the repertoire presented in these concerts would be Bach s harpsichord concertos, which were arrangements of other concertos for different instruments. According to Pankratz, these concertos (both for the original instrument and harpsichord) were written with didactic purposes, meaning that they were supposed to help the students improve their musical skills. Following Pankratz s idea of Bach being a music director with instructive goals, this paper suggests that the third movement of the Harpsichord Concerto No.5 in F minor, BWV 1056 by Johann Sebastian Bach is a prime example of his pedagogic influence in Leipzig, represented by the constant interaction between the soloist and the ripieno. This is symbolic of the teacher student relation Bach had with the students, as he would often be the solo performer in the evening concerts and the students would play the ripieno parts. The interaction between the soloist and the ripieno comes in various forms: advanced counterpoint, dynamics, dialogue, and/or harmonic changes. The work features three ritornello themes in which we find all these interactions. The first theme (R1) is the main theme and it is four measures long.
