The last decade showed a fluctuation in silica sand consumptions in several industries and reached the lowest level in 2009 due to the global recession. Due to the variety of products and the new or future developments in applications, the long term forecast of silica sand requires nonconventional methods of prediction. As an integrated part of the supply chain of numerous industries, silica sand demand has been decomposed into many sectors based on the intended applications. in this research. the impact of future demand of glass containers, flat glass, specialty glass, fiber glass, fracture sand, foundry sand, whole grain fillers, abrasive, gravel sand, recreation sand, chemicals, fillers, ceramic and filtration industries in the total global silica demand for the next decade. Each unique market position and its interconnection with other industries had been studied to draw a strategic long term forecast of silica sand based on market share of each industry.

We presented the fabrication of a novel geometric light trapping structure based on silica particle. This light
trapping structure with good morphology was fabricated through modified Stöber method and spray technique.
More importantly, the silica particles were dispersed onto glass by using bottom-up or chemical approach
involves a common route used to synthesis silica particles from atomic or molecular scale. An optimized
synthesis condition is a combination of optimal values of each reaction parameter of Stöber method that could
produce homogenous and mono-dispersed silica nanoparticles with uniform size. The diameter of silica particles
can be varied from 200, 430, 560, 460 nm by increasing concentrations of ammonia from 2.33 mM to 4.65 mM,
9.31 mM and 13.96 mM, respectively. We found that the silica particle size was well controlled and uniform
from ~200 nm to 560 nm by controlling the ammonia concentration. These results open up the possibility to
further fabricate geometric light trapping structure with high scattering level (haze) and subsequently to increase
the short circuit current density (Jsc) in the solar cells.
The performances of Nsu clay extender pigment in alkyd paint formulations have been studied.
Xylene was used as the solvent while TiO2 formulated alkyd paint sample served as a reference in this study. The
three particle sizes of the clay used in this study are 0.075, 0.15, and 0.30 mm. The physic-mechanical
properties of the paint samples were evaluated according to ASTM. The study showed that paints formulated
with Nsu clay had higher viscosities which increased with increases in clay contents at any clay particle size
investigated while 100 % TiO2 formulated alkyd paint had the least paint viscosity. The specific gravities of the
formulated alkyd paint samples decreased with increases in clay contents and clay particle sizes. The 100 %
TiO2 formulated alkyd paint had the highest specific gravity. The drying properties of the paint samples were
generally good. The alkyd paint formulated with 0.075 mm clay particle size had low drying times than those
formulated with 0.15 and 0.30 mm clay particle sizes at any clay content. The dry film thickness of the
formulated paint samples were in the range of 0.29 – 0.39. The dry paint film hardness of the formulated alkyd
paints increased with increases in clay contents at the three clay particle sizes studied. With the exception of
TiO2 formulated paint sample which exhibited no settling tendency, the formulated paint samples exhibited
moderate settling tendencies for 0.075 mm clay particle size when compared with the other clay particle sizes.
There was no mildew formation observed on all the paint samples after exposure to rain and sunlight for eight
months. There was no evidence of rust in all the formulated paint samples. Generally, all the paint samples
exhibited good resistance to distilled water, 3 % H2SO4, and Na2CO3. All the formulated paint samples were
affected on 3 % NH3 immersion which resulted to wrinkles, with the larger particle sized clay adversely
affected. The performance characteristics obtained from the formulated paint samples with the indigenous Nsu
clay has highlighted the improved paint properties obtainable with the local clay which should justify their
utilization in the surface coatings industries for a variety of different applications.

Power plants release a large amount of water vapor into the
atmosphere through the stack. The flue gas can be a potential
source for obtaining much needed cooling water for a power
plant. If a power plant could recover and reuse a portion of this
moisture, it could reduce its total cooling water intake
requirement. One of the most practical way to recover water
from flue gas is to use a condensing heat exchanger. The power
plant could also recover latent heat due to condensation as well
as sensible heat due to lowering the flue gas exit temperature.
Additionally, harmful acids released from the stack can be

Condensation of vapors in flue gas is a complicated
phenomenon since heat and mass transfer of water vapor and
various acids simultaneously occur in the presence of noncondensable
gases such as nitrogen and oxygen. Design of a
condenser depends on the knowledge and understanding of the
heat and mass transfer processes. A computer program for
numerical simulations of water (H2O) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
condensation in a flue gas condensing heat exchanger was
developed using MATLAB. Governing equations based on
mass and energy balances for the system were derived to
predict variables such as flue gas exit temperature, cooling
water outlet temperature, mole fraction and condensation rates
of water and sulfuric acid vapors. The equations were solved
using an iterative solution technique with calculations of heat
and mass transfer coefficients and physical properties.

2. Clay
Clay is a naturally occurring material composed
primarily of fine grained minerals, which shows
plasticity through a variable range of water
content and which can be hardened when dried
or fired. Clay deposits are mostly composed of
clay minerals (phyllosilicate minerals) and
variable amount of water trapped in the mineral.
Clay materials have been investigated because of
their importance in agriculture, in ceramics, in
construction and other uses.

6. There are four main groups of clays :
1- Kaolinite.
2-Montmottilonite-smectitie:the essential nanoclay
raw material , a 2 to 1 layered smectite clay mineral
with a platey structure.
3-Illite.
4- Chlorite.

7. Nano-clay
Nano clays are minerals which have a high aspect ratio
and with at least one dimension of the particle in the
nanometer range. The purity and cation
exchange capacity of the nano-clay are also critical
characteristics. The purity is important in achieving
maximum increases in mechanical properties and
achieving optimum clarity for use in films. Impurities
act as stress concentrators, resulting in poor impact
and tensile properties. The cation exchange capacity
provides the surface activity necessary for acceptance
of modifiers or surface treatments.

11. APPLICATION OF NANOCLAY
1.Nanoclay is used in the ink formulation: It helps to
adjust the consistency of printing inks to the desired
value, avoiding pigment sedimentation, providing
good colour distribution, obtaining desired film
thickness, etc. by incorporation of small amount of
organically modified layered silicate.
2.Thickening lubricating oils with nanoclays can
produce especially high temperature resistant
lubricating greases.
12. 3.The performance of cosmetics is enhanced
by the use of nanoclays and they allow good
colour retention and coverage for nail
lacquers, lipsticks and eye shadows.

The use of nanoclays in wastewater treatment has become
common in industry today. Nanoclays exhibit a synergistic
effect with many commonly utilized water treatment unit
processes including granular-activated charcoal, reverse
osmosis, and air strippers. Granular-activated carbon is
particularly effective at removing a large range of organic
molecules from water, however, is very poor for removing
large molecules such as humic acid and wastewaters
containing emulsified oil and grease. Nanoclays have proven
to be the technology of choice for treating oily wastewaters.
