Students may have a preferred style but this doesn t mean that educators should use just one form to
accommodate an individual s style. Using a multitude of styles will keep a student s interest and will
ensure a more solid understanding of the information presented.
Many researchers believe that everyone has a preferred learning style and have developed a list of
questions and if answered truthfully, are designed to indicate what preferred style the learner has. The
basic learning styles are auditory, visual and kinesthetic. The auditory learners prefer information

M., 2013, p. 2). With all of these varying ideas on how to categorize students way of learning it
becomes difficult to know how to best accomplish teaching for a group of different learners. While it
would seem that students benefit from learning in their preferred style or type the reality is that there
may be more to this. The unfortunate truth is the studies that investigate teaching to the student s style
are for the most part flawed. The few that are not flawed show no benefit to teaching to the student s
style. (Guterl, S., 2013, p.2). Cognitive ability and the subject being taught may play more of a role in
the student s ability to learn and retain. The idea to cater to students strengths seems counter
productive. If a student struggles with visual learning, it may be advantageous to develop that
shortcoming. The goal of any education program is to leave with more knowledge. The idea of
stretching the abilities of students will only benefit them in the end. When a child is very little and
unable to walk we don t discourage them from developing the strength and coordination to walk, even
though there are other ways of moving around. We know that in time they will learn to walk and
eventually run. We encourage them to stretch their abilities and by that develop more abilities. The
same could be said of learning styles; by a student learning in a style that is less desirable they are
developing a new strength.
