Animal Farm Satire
Often in life, men and women are forced to pause in their states of mind to ponder the world in which
they live, often involving politics and similar forms of existence. Fortunately, certain noble authors
compose written thoughts which make this easier to do. One of these, however, rises above the rest.
Animal Farm, by George Orwell, deserves to be a classic because it functions on so many levels, as a
novel, a satire, a fable and an allegory. Whether for better or for worse, any classical piece of literature
falls under one type, and that type is a novel.A novel is a narrative book which uses fictional
characters to describe real life events and people. In this particular case, Animal Farm is a book with

A fable is a short but memorable tale which uses anthropomorphous animal characters in a fictional
world which closely resembles ours. This makes Animal Farm into an obvious fable, for as its title
clearly states, the book is about a group of animals who live on a farm. They can talk, and some of
them can read and write. In addition to this, the novel takes place in a small neighborhood which
appears similar to the Great Britain of the world wars, thus satisfying the fictional requirement,
leaving only one thing; the length. Animal Farm checks in at 139 pages of medium text, short enough
to be considered a fable, and a surprisingly fast

Mediterranean Research Paper
The Mediterranean has served as the cradle of civilization for a diversity of cultures and beliefs. The
Mediterranean Sea has so much to offer when it comes to historical events (Cassar). The Megalithic
Temples of Malta consist of several prehistoric temples. Malta, previously known as Melita, is an
island off the coast of Europe and an archeological site that is rich in history. The temples of Malta
and Gozo are among the oldest freestanding architectural objects in the world. The structures are
constructed of stone coralline limestone in a cloverleaf (trefoil) floor plan (Cox). They are older than
the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. These temples were preserved and covered in soil. They were
rediscovered in the 19th century. Because of their unique architecture and the history behind it, the
Temples of Malta are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are four different Temple
phases that occurred throughout the Malta period. The Mgarr phase (3800 3600 BC) was mainly
pottery and the very beginning of the temples. During the Gantija Phase (3600 3000 BC) the temples
began to be constructed. The Saflieni phase (3300 3000 BC) is the transitional phase and it is the most
important development phase. Last but not least we have the Tarxien phase (3150 2500 BC) which is
the peak of the temple civilization (Foundation). Even though there were four phases temple building
was divided into two main phases. The first phase being the Ggantija phase (3500 2500

Upton Sinclair
Upton Sinclair, the most influential writer regarding the food industry was born in Baltimore 1879.
Growing up in a poor family with an alcoholic father was difficult for Upton (Simkin, John). Upton
often lived with his wealthy grandparents during his childhood due to the instability in his own home.
Moving from his poor parents house to his grandparents rich house constantly made him see the
injustice in the American society, this made him become a radical socialist as young as his early teens.
At 14, Upton being the intelligent and independent man he was, started attending New York City
College. In order to make money to pay for his tuition, apartment, and still provide for his family,
Upton sold magazines and news articles of his socialistic ideas. The childhood Upton struggled
through with family and financial problems only made him strive to change the conditions of America
in his writing.
Sinclair s writing started to become very eminent in the early 1900 s, and by the age of 16 his book
The Jungle changes the food industry forever. In 1905 Sinclair was hired to work in Packingtown
Chicago for a meat processing company for a pay of $500 ( $13,513.51 today s money) (Upton
Sinclair Hits Readers in the Stomach). For two months Sinclair worked in the meatpacking industry,
afterwards, he went into solitude for nine months to write about the details of the industry. The meat

Sleep Caused By Astronauts
Sleep
An up or down cannot be in the space, the human cannot stay in fixed position and can sleep in any
orientation. Weightlessness simplifies the process of bedding down when the sleep time does come. ,
The astronauts do not need mattresses who is in a weightless environment. Each bed include a padded
board and a fireproof sleeping bag attached it. Astronauts zip themselves inside the sleeping bags and
almost leave their arms out. Each crew quarters also provide an individual light, communications
station, fan, sound suppression blanket, and sheets with weightlessness restraints for astronauts.
Astronauts in spacecraft travel seventeen thousand miles per hour so crew members experience
sixteen sunrises and sunsets each day. They cannot have the usual daylight and nighttime cycles. The

Buntz And yet the official bureaucratic knowledge of the war lays claim to reality, whereas poetry as a

CR Across the triple canopy jungle you shared / You don t remember it . (7 8) Two themes that are
similar in both Buntz and Weigl s poetry is the use of nature and memory. In Weigl s poem Song of
Napalm , the subject of the poem was inferred to have lived in a farm while reminded of scenes from
the war. In Buntz essay, he relates the jungles with the memories of the soldiers as something that they
cannot escape from. JM The girl / Running from her village, napalm / Stuck to her dress like jelly /
Her hands reaching for the no one / Who waits in waves of heat before her (23 27). This quote in
Weigl s Song of Napalm describes the atrocities of war witnessed by soldiers. Although the soldiers
see this on a daily basis, Buntz mentions that this was a routine and that soldiers could do nothing to
help in these situations. JM They are strangers, isolated by the horror they have suffered, inflicted on
others, or witnessed (Bunzt) Bunzt describes the aftermath of soldiers returning home from the
battlefield. In Weigl s poem Song of Napalm , the veteran is standing alongside someone but is the
only one constantly reminded of the horror they have seen. This illustrates the difference between
people who were at war and those who did not partake in war.

Stereotypes In Minority Report
Minority Report is an oddly misplaced mystery/action movie about a cop who is accused of a future
murder. Set in early 21st century Washington, DC, the police have the ability to stop murders before
they happen with the help of three psychics. They use technology to enhance the visions of these
psychics, referred to as pre cognitives (or pre cogs ) to generate not only the name of the victim and
perpetrator, but also the evidence against them: hence the crime of murder is reduced to a black and
white picture. Anytime the Pre cogs visions are in conflict a Minority Report is generated, yet it is also
destroyed except for what the pre cog who predicted it remembers deep within their mind.
John Anderton is the Chief of Police of PreCrime, a department of the police that deals with murder
and uses pre cogs. His son was kidnapped, driving him to PreCrime, and preventing further loss of
innocent life. His faith in the system is rooted his loss, and up to his accusation, unfaltering. His faith
begins to falter when he discovers that there is missing data regarding some of the victims and
perpetrators. This leads him to question the system, which eventually leads those in charge to arrange
for his arrest for the future murder of Jim Crow. Convinced of ... Show more content on

for one forecasted to commit murder? What if you knew your future was murder? With John we have
a person who is committed to upholding the law, and we should expect that he would not murder
someone especially if he had previous knowledge that he was to commit it. Yet by the end of the
movie we learn that there is no minority report for him. He is destined to kill Crow. His choice is to
arrest him for the kidnap and murder of his son, thereby restoring justice and creating his own

Similarities And Differences Between 1984 And Never Let Me Go
Compare and Contrast the extent in which the governments in 1984 and Never Let Me Go Many of
my memories come from my garden in Luxembourg. My friends and I would often play a game called
Bakery, which meant mashing up berries and leaves found in the garden and sprinkling them upon
pats of mud. We took the roles of poor chefs who earned their livings selling baked goods, uprooting
peculiar weeds and picking brightly coloured flowers to decorate these cakes . Of course now, this
faded tableau depicting the act of pretending proves nonsensical, but in that moment, the game seemed
real to us. But memories and imagination are what distinguishes humans from animals. The dystopian

As children, our imaginations generate flawless worlds. After she leaves Hailsham, Ruth s dimension
deviated from the path her society set. Her aspiration of working in an office with gleaming equipment
and chair with swivels and castors opposes the reality of subsequent organ donations that lies ahead of
her (p28). Her fate is inevitable, and as she leaves her childhood behind, she begins to accept that her
dream was unrealistic. In fact, all Hailsham s children desire a successful career. But Miss Lucy
shatters their hope by telling them that none of [them] will go to America or work in supermarkets

Quinceañera Traditions
Every culture has some form of a celebration to recognize the coming of age of a child when they are
seen as a young adult to society. In Latin American countries, they call this celebration a Quinceañera
and it takes place when a young girl turns fifteen. In the United States, they celebrate a Sweet 16, once
the young girl turns sixteen. Both the Quinceañera and the Sweet 16 have some similarities, but they
have different traditions. In Sweet 16 parties, traditions vary because of the many celebrations for girls
with different ethnic backgrounds. Traditional themes that are found in Quinceañeras include a church
service, the shoe ceremony, and the last doll which symbolizes her childhood being left behind.

There is no religious component to a Sweet 16. In some states, the Sweet 16 marks the day when the
young girl can drive. However, this is not always the case in every state. Nonetheless, the Quinceañera
party does not focus on the driving aspect. At a Sweet 16, the guest of honor might be given the keys
to her first car. On the contrary, at a Quinceañera, the quince is usually given her first pair of high
heels. Traditionally, most people choose to have a Quinceañera party. However, it is becoming more
common for the young girl to skip the extravagant Sweet 16 party because she would rather get a car
or go on an expensive vacation. I can understand why someone wouldn t want a big celebration,
because both types of parties can be very costly. A Sweet 16 birthday party for a teenager can cost
from $300 $25,000 depending on how big the party is. The cost of a Quinceañera can cost the
equivalent to a wedding. However, it is very stressful for Latin American families to pay for their
child s party so it is necessary to start saving from the moment their child is born. Many parents look
to close family members to help contribute to the cost of the party. For example, in Cuba the budget of
the party is very low, varying from $300 to $400. Due to Fidel Castro s reign, parents salaries can be
as low as $20 a month making it very difficult to afford an expensive

History And Symbolism Of The Athena Parthenon
Erected during the mid fifth century BCE in Ancient Greece, the Athena Parthenon still stands
prominently atop the Athena Acropolis. Built on the site of important temples and citadels destroyed
during the Persians sack on Athens in 480 BCE, it is considered the greatest Greek temple ever built.
The temple was built to celebrate not only Athens patron goddess Athena, but also to celebrate the
Athenian people. The Athena Parthenon s great role was as the home to the Athena Parthenos; a
monumental gold and ivory sculpture of the warrior goddess Athena. This paper will delve into the
background, creation, history, symbolism and importance of the Athena Parthenos to the ancient
Greeks. Athena was the goddess of wisdom and military victory. She born from the head of Zeus, king
of the gods after he swallowed her mother Metis, a nymph before she could be born. Zeus had been
told that Metis would give birth to a son after Athena who would be a threat to him, so decided to try
and stop the birth of Athena. When Athena was born, Hephaestus split Zeus head open with an ax,
allowing Athena to step out of his head fully grown and wearing full armor. Athena became the patron
goddess of Athens, only because she beat Poseidon in a contest. Both claimed the city of Athens and
the land surrounding it as their own. To prove their ownership, each deity gave a gift to the Athenians;
Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident, creating a salt spring. Athena made an olive

Harriet Jacobs And Frederick Douglas
The narratives of Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglas were nothing short of powerful as their unique
resilience reflected a gruesome upbringing that would then influence audiences everywhere.
Immediately the reader is introduced to the gendered distinctions in narratives as Douglas has letters
and statements of prominent men reinforce the validity of his work while Jacobs is forced to create a
pleading tone for acknowledgement of her experience as a female slave. Although slavery was an
excruciating experience that unjustly plagued millions of African Americans, gender roles and
constructs allowed for distinct offenses that forced women to experience unique abuse relative to their
male counterparts. The narratives of Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglas reinforced the trials of
slavery with examples of educational hardship, physical trauma and differing aspirations of freedom.
These factors and a few others such as motherhood and masculinity influenced their legacy in context
of slavery as a gendered experience.
The distinct introduction to each of their lives not only set an impression for the reader but also serves
as a precursor to the different aspirations and dreams of escape that Jacobs and Douglas distinctly had.
Beginning with Jacobs her narrative was written around her scarce time when she was not tending to
household duties and avoiding the unclean images her master regularly imposed on her. Jacobs did not
have informal education as frequent as Douglass and

Three events are associated with the Cuban Missile Crisis: superpower tension, the domestic situation
in Cuba, and the Bay of Pigs incident. The ideological competition between Russia and the U.S. was
exemplified in the arms, nuclear and space race, the funding of anti Communists by the U.S., the
unsuccessful Vienna Summit of 1961 and the construction of the Berlin Wall.
In 1958, Kruschev had asked NATO to give up West Berlin to East Germany and by the summer of
1961, Kruschev and Kennedy met during the Vienna Summit, where Kruschev insisted upon East
German control over West Berlin. On August 13, the Soviets and East Germans built a wall that
limited free means of access between the Western and Eastern zones. American and Soviet forces
confronted each other at Checkpoint Charlie, which controlled the passage across.
The U.S. eventually agreed with the wall s construction in November 1961, resolving the Berlin
Crisis. However, Kruschev had not yet gotten what he wanted. According to him, the installation of
Soviet missiles in Cuba could be to negotiate over Berlin. Kennedy might replace the removal of
Soviet Cuban missiles with retreat from West Berlin.

Living and Coping with Cystic Fibrosis in the South Asian...
A widely accepted Caucasian disease has since changed; as cases of its existence are appearing in the
South Asian Population (Orenstein, Rosenstein and Stern, 2000). First discovered in 1989, Cystic
Fibrosis (CF) is a genetically predetermined condition, its presences is lifelong and highly complex,
which is why many CF sufferers and families develop various mechanisms in order to adapt to the
condition (Tippingemail, Scholes, Cox, 2010). Cystic Fibrosis causes the body to develop thick, sticky
mucus which clogs the lungs and affects other organs in the body, mainly the pancreas. The layer of
mucus if untreated develops in to a chronic infection which can be detrimental. The pancreas of a CF
patient is most vulnerable, once the mucus has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Discussions of such issues suggest that other external factors may be influencing the decisions and
maintenance of many CF patients. For instance CF patients need to prioritise the way in which they
self manage their treatment, this can be difficult when trying to balance family, work, education and
other responsibilities and their levels of adherence may fluctuate (Sawicki, Sellers, Robinson, 2009).
These fluctuations can be detrimental to their condition and may result in hospitalisation, causing
additional disruptions in their daily life. However, engaging in so called normal activities might
therefore also reinforce a sense of being healthy and having a nondifferent identity. Conquering a
healthy balance is one which CF patients may need to adopt. One of the significant points from
McCormick et al, (2005) research underlined the substantial clinical differences for females in
comparison to males. The authors found that females had worst disease severity than males. Why
might this difference be occurring? In 2009 Besier, Schmitz and Goldbeck, investigated the effects of
relationship status on life satisfaction, as numerous findings suggest that despite the relationship
status, many females CF patients still reported worse quality of life scores than males (Walters,
Britton, Hodson, 1993). Besier et al, (2009) administrated the Life satisfaction questionnaire on a
sample of 243 CF (129

The social dimension of PTSD can be explained by poor social support during childhood and
adulthood. The most important factor would most likely be the lack of support after a traumatic
incident (Sue, Sue, Sue, and Sue, 2014, p.125). For example, if James Ryan came back from World
War II and was abandoned by his mother, it would hit him pretty hard. Not only did he face traumatic
experiences on the battlefield, but coming home to see that his mom had left him all alone would be
devastating. Being isolated and not having any support from his family could result in higher chances
of developing PTSD. The etiology of how PTSD has been uncover, the following will be various

Censorship And Its Effect On Children
Namita Sharma Mr. McCormick 2/19/2015 ENG 3U1 Monkey See, Monkey Do Monkey see, monkey
do, a simple phrase relevant to today s society. Those in society that simply do not know any better,
such as children, are inclined to imitate what they see being done. Without censorship daily television
shows are increasingly exhibiting more violence, foul language and sexuality to susceptible youth.
Due to lack of censorship, explicit music lyrics and inappropriate images on music videos are being
introduced to impressionable children. There is a lack of control on the internet leading to internet
addiction and forces vulnerable adolescents to face cyber bullying. In a variety of mediums not
enough censorship is used, which influences impressionable youth to think and behave negatively. The
increasing amount of violence, foul language and sexuality available to children on TV is harmful to
their development. What was once a time for children to watch TV with content suitable for their age
is now directed for an older audience, Family Hour. Statistics show that this is the time most children
are watching television with their family members. Despite knowing this, Since 2000 2001, the
amount of sexual content during the Family Hour has increased by 22.1% (Parents Television Council

sexual content on television. 79% of those that participated in the poll stated that there was too much.

Summary Of Sigmund Freud s Totem And Taboo
In the book, Totem and Taboo by Sigmund Freud, Freud focuses on the commonly acknowledged
cultural taboo against incest and studies how it structures primitive societies. He speculates on his
concept of the Oedipal Complex and how it affects society as a whole. He wishes to establish a
connection between the Oedipal Complex and the phenomenon of conscience, which involves the
sense of a moral code governing our lives and our sense of guilt. In order to establish this connection,
Freud discusses ambivalence, our belief in the omnipotence of our thoughts, and animal phobias and
sacrificial rituals in order to make a sound, reasonable argument. Freud begins his book by comparing

The male tribe members went to long measures to prevent incest, like hiding in bushes or running
away from the female family member. Freud focuses on this idea of repressed incestuous desires that
one innate has and has to constantly fight against, in order to fit in society. Freud deems this idea of
incest and the killing of the totem animal as taboo, which is this idea of something being both
clean/sacred and unclean/forbidden at the same time. Taboo is a prohibition forced upon people
directed towards an internal, powerful desire that people want, but must avoid at all costs. The desire
to violate this prohibition is deep in their unconscious. Freud acknowledges this internal desire and
believes that: the persistence of the taboo, namely that the original desire to do the prohibited thing
must also still persist among the tribes concerned. They must therefore have an ambivalent attitude
towards their taboos. In their unconscious there is nothing they would like more than to violate them,
but they are afraid to do so and the fear is stronger than the desire. The desire is unconscious,
however, in every individual member of the tribe just as it is in neurotics (Freud 40). These people
begin to have an ambivalent and guilty attitude towards what the taboo is actually inhibiting. They
secretly, internally, unconsciously, love the idea of the prohibited act but ultimately feel guilty if they
violate the tribal laws. This ambivalence

said that a great amount of the undiscovered plants and animals will not have a chance at being
discovered, the ozone layer is depleting in the course, and the plants needed to fight pollution are
dying or the process is being disrupted. It seems as if these effects are rather irrelevant to the
population that is causing this disaster. One of the deadliest diseases ... Show more content on

We don #39;t need to clear the 4 to 6 percent of the Earth #39;s surface remaining in
tropical rain forests, with most of the animal and plant species living
there. (Wilson)
In our daily world, with the increased awareness on such issues such as deforestation, we
all have come to the knowledge of the potential dangers of this happening and what can happen
to our world. Statistics show that only 30% of the earth s rainforests are left and that is an
alarming number that can take years to boost back up. Because of deforestation, we see the
physical damage it s doing such as severe climate change and the extinction of various amount
of species in the thousands. We also can see that not so noticeable fact that our carbon dioxide
emissions are rising in the atmosphere around us which is primarily due to this epidemic. One

Bubonic Plague Research Paper
Bubonic plague is an infectious disease that is spread by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. These bacteria
remain in a dormant state primarily in a rat flea s foregut. Once the flea has bitten a victim it
regurgitates the contents in its foregut into the bite location. Once the bacterium has entered into a
mammal s warm body it begins to reproduce and spread throughout the mammal s body. The
reproduction of this bacterium creates large painful swollen lymph nodes which are called buboes.
Once these buboes get large enough they begin to ooze infected body fluid so that any contact
between an infected person and a healthy person will facilitate the spread of this disease. (The Mayo

(The Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012)
It was believed in the middle ages that this disease was caused by poor hygiene, bad eating habits,
corrupted humid air, and a lack of rest. Once a person was thought to be infected the doctors would
move them to a non infected area thinking that this would heal the persons illness instead this
transported the disease even further than normal. In modern times we have made leaps and bounds to
control this illness. One of the main problems of the plague is that it is not treatable until the victim
gets tested and confirmed that the plague is the illness. Once that is done they will start receiving high
doxycycline doses and many other types of antibiotics. The mortality rate for someone that is not
treated is 50 90% compared to treated cases of 1 15%.
The bubonic plague has been around for almost two thousand years. In most early cases the plague
was spread from China along the Silk Road. The Silk Road was the over land trade route from the
orient that silk, spices, and other trade able goods from the east to western Europe. In most cases rats
carrying the Oriental Rat Flea or another animal carrying the flea would move to a new location. Once
that animal died the flea would move to another host which could be a human. Once bitten by the flea
a bubo begins to form when the bubo begins to ooze fluid the illness can then be passed through
touch. As stated above in the Middle

Writing Signs
Remembering as a little girl my mother and I used to drive down the road and she would always point
out signs so I could visually see them and learn how to spell them too. Passing through our small town
spelling words as simple as R I T E A I D to spelling words like J A L A P E N O S and her going
through my phase of always asking why. Why does the J sound like a H Mommy? She always said
learning how to read and write is going to be your most powerful weapon. My earliest memories about
reading and writing were very pleasant for me. In a way I guess, you could even say that some of
these experiences were even significate to me. It was the first time in my life that I can truly remember
feeling amusing about learning. It was the little things she did. Mom would purchase picture book and
check some out in the library as well. She would come into my room to read to me every night; she
influenced me through the sound of her voice how strong and soft her words would hit the surface
before I went into a deep sleep.
Waking up to a new not promised day is always special. I would jump out of bed say my prayers and
every time I got into the car with my Mom it was like an automatic game we would play, pushing the
resume button to continue spelling the places, but also to learn my colors, numbers, and directions. We
would travel forever in my mind. Mom words were, getting lost is half the fun. She made learning fun

Landscapes Through The Ages By Claude Lorrain s Seaport...
Landscaping Landscapes: Exploring the Creation of Landscapes since the 17th century to the Modern
Era
From the 1600s to present day, landscapes have evolved in color and style. As the Baroque era
incorporated stories and modern landscape photography focuses on color and subject, landscape
artistry has changed as new movements of art and history occur. A proposed exhibition of landscapes
includes Claude Lorrain s Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba, Van Gogh s Long
Grass with Butterflies, Paul Nash s Totes Meer (Dead Sea), and Ainsley Bennett s Binary Haze. The
works could be used in order to understand of how the portrayal of landscapes has changed from the
1600s to the modern day. Through the proposed exhibition, Landscapes through the Ages, one can
follow the theme of how the historical context of different centuries has influenced the creation of
landscape art. In Claude Lorrain s Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba (1648),
Lorrain depicts the biblical story of the Queen of Sheba visiting King Solomon (Figure 1). Although
painted in 1648 during the Baroque era, Seaport is a unique painting for the time. Choosing to paint
landscapes over portraiture, Lorrain was considered an unconventional artist. Seen in Seaport is an
example of his atypical style through his incorporation of a classical style in the architecture of his
paintings (Langdon). Although offbeat, Lorrain still followed the pattern of incorporating a biblical

The Use Of Electroconvulsive Therapy Is It Really...
Electroconvulsive Therapy is it Really Controversial Anthony R. McMillan University of South
Florida Sarasota Manatee Electroconvulsive Therapy History: The precursors for this therapy type
were introduced long before electroconvulsive therapy even entered into the picture. In the early 16th
century using medical drugs to induce seizures was thought to be appropriate to treat therapeutic
conditions. This was followed with an article in the London Medical Journal in 1785 stating that
inducing seizures could be used for therapeutic use. Convulsive therapy would then reappear in 1934
when a neurologist by the name of the Ladislas J. Meduna first began to induce seizures in patients
first by using the drug camphor and the following up with the drug metrazol. In 1937 the first
international meeting on convulsive therapy was held in Switzerland and 3 years after that cardiazal
convulsive therapy would be used worldwide. In 1937 an Italian professor of neuropsychiatry be the
name of Ugo Cerletti with his colleague Lucio Bini would be the first people to replace metrazol with
electricity in the convulsive therapy. The reasons that he choose to replace metrazol with electricity in
the therapy was based on previous experiments he had conducted on inducing seizures in animals
using electroshock. Previous experiments that he had done with animals included noticing that in dogs
giving them an electric shock to the head would result in convulsions. Another

Juxtaposition In Crime And Punishment
In Fyodor Dostoyevsky s, Crime and Punishment, the conclusion of the novel plays an important role
in resolving and reconciling a multitude of conflicts within the characters. For Dostoyevsky, the
resolution of the story plays a significant purpose not only in resolving the various crimes committed,
but additionally acting as a moral reassessment for the characters that helps the audience reflect upon
their own morals as well. Accordingly, through Dostoyevsky s portrayal of the troubling abuses
committed by the characters due to their lack of regard for the law, a large portion of the novel
emphasizes the concept of a universal morality that should be intrinsic to humanity. Through the
analysis of the repercussions of Raskolnikov s crimes, Svidrigailov s crimes, and the juxtaposition
between them, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

him to reintegrate into society. Raskolnikov s submission to governmental law when he professes to

stressing how this action is for settling Raskolnikov s own guilty conscience not anyone else s.
Consequently, the police arrest Raskolnikov and send him to Siberia for seven years to fulfill manual

Control In Ernest Gaines s A Lesson Before Dying
Control and its effect on entities based on observations of ENG3UT
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction Newton s third law. This law is just as
accurate for human interactions; for every content dominant man, there is a sad submissive man. The
symbolism used by Ernest Gaines, Henrik Ibsen, Ambrose Flack, and Isaac Asimov is used to show
how control over others, leads to sadness for the inferior person in the relationship. These corrupt
relationships are shown in A Lesson before Dying using the symbols, the broken books of the black
children, the electric chair and Pichot s kitchen, which help illustrate how groups in control, the
whites, will hurt subservient groups, the blacks. Nora s pet names, the children s maid, and Krogstad s
letters are symbols found in Doll s House and help show how one person who has control over another
is detrimental for the controled party. Finally, in the short stories, The Stranger That Came To Town
and The Fun They Had , symbols such as the soap bar that killed the fish, the amputations of the
Duvitch family and the slot used on the robot teacher, help show how a dominant society harms
individual in the minority.
In the book, A Lesson Before Dying, Ernest Gaines uses symbols to show how a dominant group can
oppress a minority group; whites control and harm blacks. One symbol he uses to express this
relationship is the broken textbooks of the black children. These books represent the dominance the
white have over the black educations, when the Teacher, Wiggins, tries to get better books, Many of
the books I have to use are hand me downs from the white schools, Dr. Joseph, [...] and they have
missing pages. How can I , the white inspector, Dr Joseph, quickly shuts him down, Are you
questioning me, Higgins? No, sir, Dr. Joseph. (Gaines 57) Wiggins does not have any control in this
situation, as shown with his submissiveness and Dr Joseph lack of care for his name. Due to this lack
of control, he cannot get better books. These books symbolise how the whites are treating the black
community, as lower and second class, they are only worthy of used and broken items from the
whites. The control over the black makes it that the children get a worst

Playing against a Computer or a Human Research
Background and significance Individuals participating in an interaction perceive one another as
rational agents who possess beliefs, desires and intentions that might be different than their own.
Assumptions made about these mental states are used to interpret and predict behavior. Conferring
such attributes to an agent (human, computer, whatever) has been described as adopting an intentional
stance (Dennet, 1996). Adopting an intentional stance is part of our broader ability to mentalize which
involves representing and attributing mental states to oneself and others. Research concerned with
understanding the neural system of mentalizing has indentified a network of regions that minimally
involve the temporoparietal region (TPJ) and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) (Abu Akel and
Shamay Tsoory, 2011). However, it is not completely clear the extent to which humans readily
mentalize (or adopt an intentional stance) with other humans or non humans (e.g., computers). Thus
an important goal of this study is to investigate how the neural network associated with adopting an
intentional stance is modulated under various interaction conditions in which the interacting partner
and the context are varied. Several studies employing various interactive games have been conducted
to uncover the neural basis involved in adopting an intentional stance. These studies followed a
similar script according to which participants were led to believe that they are playing either against a

The Crucifixion In Mel Gibson s Film The Passion Of Christ
Mel Gibson s movie, The Passion of Christ, is a film based on the final hours of Jesus life. After
watching the film it can be concluded that there is an unambiguous portrayal of Jews being
responsible for Jesus death. There is no question throughout the film about who is responsible for the
crucifixion because of the nasty portrayal of the Jewish people and Roman soldiers. At every
opportunity, Gibson s reinforces the notion that the Jewish high priest and the Jewish followers are the
ones ultimately responsible for the Crucifixion through the language and wording used and the
constant display of their hatful actions towards Jesus, for those reasons the film is anti Jewish.
In the interview with Diane Sawyer, Gibson was asked if he was ... Show more content on

The bad Jews are the high priests and the other Jews in the mob, clearly yelling hateful slurs at Jesus,
however, the good Jews consisted of Mary, John, the other woman and their followers. Arguable, the
groups of good Jews are those who are though as models in Christianity today. The problem with
Gibson use of stereotypes is any viewer who has little to no background in the gospels or
understanding of the crucifixion, will see the Jewish people has completely involved in Jesus final
hours of being tortured and murdered. Also having a negative approach towards the Jewish people in
the film will also push any induvial who already blames the Jews for Jesus death even further, creating
more anti sematic movements.
In creating the movie Gibson, being a biblical literalist, picked parts from all four gospels, which
allowed for more options in shaping the film because each gospel has a similar but different view.
Gibson also used outside research to help the film. By doing so, he over exaggerated the anti Jewish
portrayal using material based on the mystical visions of, Anne Catherine Emerson, a nun who is
known for being anti Jewish. The parts Gibson choose contained anti Jewish lines, creating an anti
Jewish undertone throughout the

Frederick Douglass And Karl Marx And Friedrich Engels
Both authors Frederick Douglass and Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels focus on the topic of freedom.
Both authors argue that they are being oppressed. However, this is where the similarities end. Engels
and Marx believed that capitalism was a social system used by the proletariats to oppress the
bourgeoisie, and that the only way to be free was to fight back against the system. On the other hand,
Frederick Douglass focuses more on his individual story and his struggle for freedom, while he tries to
appeal to his audience from an ethical point of view. Frederick Douglass biography revolves around
the idea of freedom. After seeing a traumatizing incident as a child, Douglass slowly begins to realize
that he is not a free human being, but is a slave owned by other people. He is surrounded by a society
that devalues him and people like him, and systematically worked to keep them ignorant and
submissive. In this society, it is made clear that no slave is special, and everyone is replaceable. Rather
than accept this, Douglass struggles to maintain what little autonomy he was allowed to have. When
his one of his masters, Thomas Auld, bans his mistress, Sophia, from teaching Douglass how to read,
Douglass learned from the young boys on the street. His biography shows him transforming from an
ignorant child into his older, more learned self. Douglass sees the idea of slaves in a country that is as
passionate as about its revolution as America hypocritical; in fact, this is the basis

Gingko Bilboa Case Study
Gingko Bilboa is an amazing plant source to take alongside the plant that I wrote about, St. Johns

created when taken with an additional source of L theanine (Editor, n.d.). Thankfully this is an
established plant that is not primarily sought after within areas that may exploit people for their
resources, such as biopiracy. Many areas are warned against foreigners who become too interested in a
natural resource that have healing properties. They are leery, and for good reason, due to the value of
the resource to their immediate needs, and the fear that it will be wiped out with compensation only in
the form of the drug that is then created to be. I do believe that it is important to compensate the
indigenous people for the resource that was theirs and that was exploited. However, how do you put

by using various routes and ending with a 50% yield. However, it was done so with many obstacles

difficulty in scaling up the reaction (Huang, Wang, Chen,

However, according to De Botton and Nietzsche fulfillment is an illusion . Hardships are the reason to
our happiness. We should focus on avoiding pain not seeking pleasure . In other words, happiness
comes from the absence of happiness. You cannot be constantly happy and not everyone understands
happiness the same way. Because happiness itself cannot be defined as an undeniable truth. It varies.
However, there is some truths in it. Not long ago, my good friend Kant and I were discussing this
matter and he said to me something that I consider true. He said that Happiness and Virtue are two
distinct things. Happiness is not proportional to well doing Only Virtue is good without any
implications, no matter what it achieves. Gifts of nature such as intelligence, qualities of temperament
like courage or perseverance, are often good but may be used for evil ends unless directed by a good
will. Gifts of fortune which include riches and health can also be used for good or ill. Even
moderation and self control are not good in themselves but require a good will . In other words,
Happiness is not the Supreme Good. We thrive to live life with Virtue. Happiness comes and goes.
There are some aspects in architecture that do bring happiness. But they do not last forever and that
should be something to embrace instead of being avoided. Hell, for most of my life I lived on the
streets and have been overwhelmed by happiness multiple times because of its

Why Are Humans Attracted To Cats Essay
Why are humans so attracted to cats? Cats like dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years,
adapting to humans and being part of our everyday lives. In many civilizations cats have even been
negated as divine. In ancient Egypt for example they were worshipped like gods and deemed holy. The
position of cats in society varies on the civilization and the time period, but they nonetheless exist next
to humans to some extent. This bond is unique because cats are independent, and are individualistic
creatures. More than dogs, cow s, sheep s, or any other domesticated animal cats are the closest to
being equal independent companions. There is a unique bond between cats and humans that does not
exist between any other animal and our history together is one of compatriots rather than dominance.

As stated in the article How Cats Became Domesticated , they hypothesized that cats were accepted by
humans because of wild cats hunting rodents in agrarian civilizations as long as 9,000 years ago. This
hypothesis carries weight as cats are excellent hunters and are still praised for killing unwanted
rodents even today. I personally know family members that only own cats for dealing with rodents in
their property. These family members are still maintaining the traditional cat human relationship from
our ancestors. What was interesting in that same article was when they stated, Cats, unlike dogs, are
really only semi domesticated... we were surprised to find DNA evidence of their domestication . This
explains the independent nature of cats that allows them to hunt rodents without the guidance of
humans. Cats carry in a wild nature that keeps them self sustained and unlike other domesticated
animals are not completely dominated by their owner. Being semi domesticated does not mean that
cats are completely indifferent to humans; cats still have a unique connection to their

Of Mice And Men Friendship Comparison
Of Mice and Men Compare/Contrast Essay Friendship does not have the same definition to all people.
Some people look for their friends to always be there for them, but some people consider someone a
friend as long as they are there to listen to you. Therefore, friendship is interpreted by each person. In
the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and the poem Always There by Ryan C. Wilks have
similar messages about the way they see friendship friendship, but also have different depictions of
friendship at the same time. Both writings depict friendship in a way of having someone by your side.
In Of Mice and Men Lennie says, An I got you. We got each other, that s what, that gives a hoot in hell
about us. (Steinbeck, 104). This quote says that their friendship is strong because they have each other
to care about. In Wilks poem he says, Doesn t matter what mood I m in, You re always there. (Wilks,
line 5 6). Those quotes depict friendship in a way of just being their for each other. Therefore, the

George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie s

(Steinbeck, 106). George killed Lennie because he did not want to see Curley shoot him in the gut and
leave him to a slow and painful death. The mercy killing was an act of friendship between George and
Lennie. The poem has a different job for a friend. The poem states, You will always be there for me
(Wilks, line 26). According to Always There a friend has a job to always be there for you by your side.
That is a different view from Of Mice and Men where the friendship has George doing what will keep
Lennie from suffering even if it means losing Lennie

The Value of Learning Styles
The Value of Learning Styles Learning styles and their value have been debated for some time.
Students may have a preferred style but this doesn t mean that educators should use just one form to
accommodate an individual s style. Using a multitude of styles will keep a student s interest and will
ensure a more solid understanding of the information presented.
Many researchers believe that everyone has a preferred learning style and have developed a list of
questions and if answered truthfully, are designed to indicate what preferred style the learner has. The
basic learning styles are auditory, visual and kinesthetic. The auditory learners prefer information

M., 2013, p. 2). With all of these varying ideas on how to categorize students way of learning it
becomes difficult to know how to best accomplish teaching for a group of different learners. While it
would seem that students benefit from learning in their preferred style or type the reality is that there
may be more to this. The unfortunate truth is the studies that investigate teaching to the student s style
are for the most part flawed. The few that are not flawed show no benefit to teaching to the student s
style. (Guterl, S., 2013, p.2). Cognitive ability and the subject being taught may play more of a role in
the student s ability to learn and retain. The idea to cater to students strengths seems counter
productive. If a student struggles with visual learning, it may be advantageous to develop that
shortcoming. The goal of any education program is to leave with more knowledge. The idea of
stretching the abilities of students will only benefit them in the end. When a child is very little and
unable to walk we don t discourage them from developing the strength and coordination to walk, even
though there are other ways of moving around. We know that in time they will learn to walk and
eventually run. We encourage them to stretch their abilities and by that develop more abilities. The
same could be said of learning styles; by a student learning in a style that is less desirable they are
developing a new strength.
Another way to look at learning styles is the

  • 2. Animal Farm Satire Often in life, men and women are forced to pause in their states of mind to ponder the world in which they live, often involving politics and similar forms of existence. Fortunately, certain noble authors compose written thoughts which make this easier to do. One of these, however, rises above the rest. Animal Farm, by George Orwell, deserves to be a classic because it functions on so many levels, as a novel, a satire, a fable and an allegory. Whether for better or for worse, any classical piece of literature falls under one type, and that type is a novel.A novel is a narrative book which uses fictional characters to describe real life events and people. In this particular case, Animal Farm is a book with 139 pages, on the short side of literature, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A fable is a short but memorable tale which uses anthropomorphous animal characters in a fictional world which closely resembles ours. This makes Animal Farm into an obvious fable, for as its title clearly states, the book is about a group of animals who live on a farm. They can talk, and some of them can read and write. In addition to this, the novel takes place in a small neighborhood which appears similar to the Great Britain of the world wars, thus satisfying the fictional requirement, leaving only one thing; the length. Animal Farm checks in at 139 pages of medium text, short enough to be considered a fable, and a surprisingly fast ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Mediterranean Research Paper The Mediterranean has served as the cradle of civilization for a diversity of cultures and beliefs. The Mediterranean Sea has so much to offer when it comes to historical events (Cassar). The Megalithic Temples of Malta consist of several prehistoric temples. Malta, previously known as Melita, is an island off the coast of Europe and an archeological site that is rich in history. The temples of Malta and Gozo are among the oldest freestanding architectural objects in the world. The structures are constructed of stone coralline limestone in a cloverleaf (trefoil) floor plan (Cox). They are older than the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. These temples were preserved and covered in soil. They were rediscovered in the 19th century. Because of their unique architecture and the history behind it, the Temples of Malta are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are four different Temple phases that occurred throughout the Malta period. The Mgarr phase (3800 3600 BC) was mainly pottery and the very beginning of the temples. During the Gantija Phase (3600 3000 BC) the temples began to be constructed. The Saflieni phase (3300 3000 BC) is the transitional phase and it is the most important development phase. Last but not least we have the Tarxien phase (3150 2500 BC) which is the peak of the temple civilization (Foundation). Even though there were four phases temple building was divided into two main phases. The first phase being the Ggantija phase (3500 2500 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Upton Sinclair s The Food Industry Mikayla Peri Ms. Maxwell English III 10. Feb. 2015 Upton Sinclair Upton Sinclair, the most influential writer regarding the food industry was born in Baltimore 1879. Growing up in a poor family with an alcoholic father was difficult for Upton (Simkin, John). Upton often lived with his wealthy grandparents during his childhood due to the instability in his own home. Moving from his poor parents house to his grandparents rich house constantly made him see the injustice in the American society, this made him become a radical socialist as young as his early teens. At 14, Upton being the intelligent and independent man he was, started attending New York City College. In order to make money to pay for his tuition, apartment, and still provide for his family, Upton sold magazines and news articles of his socialistic ideas. The childhood Upton struggled through with family and financial problems only made him strive to change the conditions of America in his writing. Sinclair s writing started to become very eminent in the early 1900 s, and by the age of 16 his book The Jungle changes the food industry forever. In 1905 Sinclair was hired to work in Packingtown Chicago for a meat processing company for a pay of $500 ( $13,513.51 today s money) (Upton Sinclair Hits Readers in the Stomach). For two months Sinclair worked in the meatpacking industry, afterwards, he went into solitude for nine months to write about the details of the industry. The meat would be shoveled into carts, ... Unworld Poem Analysis Reading/Idea or Theme Technowar (Buntz) Trauma (Buntz) The Unworld (Buntz) Moral Chaos (Buntz) Beauty in war humanity in War Voice of Strangers (Buntz) Buntz And yet the official bureaucratic knowledge of the war lays claim to reality, whereas poetry as a literary genre qualifies only as a product of the imagination. Unlike intelligence reports, maps, diagrams, and figures, the warrior s knowledge (Gibson 461 68) expressed in poetry does not count as official reality, (Buntz 9). (7 8) Two themes that are similar in both Buntz and Weigl s poetry is the use of nature and memory. In Weigl s poem Song of Napalm , the subject of the poem was inferred to have lived in a farm while reminded of scenes from the war. In Buntz essay, he relates the jungles with the memories of the soldiers as something that they cannot escape from. JM The girl / Running from her village, napalm / Stuck to her dress like jelly / Her hands reaching for the no one / Who waits in waves of heat before her (23 27). This quote in Weigl s Song of Napalm describes the atrocities of war witnessed by soldiers. Although the soldiers see this on a daily basis, Buntz mentions that this was a routine and that soldiers could do nothing to help in these situations. JM They are strangers, isolated by the horror they have suffered, inflicted on others, or witnessed (Bunzt) Bunzt describes the aftermath of soldiers returning home from the battlefield. In Weigl s poem Song of Napalm , the veteran is standing alongside someone but is the only one constantly reminded of the horror they have seen. • 8. Stereotypes In Minority Report Minority Report is an oddly misplaced mystery/action movie about a cop who is accused of a future murder. Set in early 21st century Washington, DC, the police have the ability to stop murders before they happen with the help of three psychics. They use technology to enhance the visions of these psychics, referred to as pre cognitives (or pre cogs ) to generate not only the name of the victim and perpetrator, but also the evidence against them: hence the crime of murder is reduced to a black and white picture. Anytime the Pre cogs visions are in conflict a Minority Report is generated, yet it is also destroyed except for what the pre cog who predicted it remembers deep within their mind. John Anderton is the Chief of Police of PreCrime, a department of the police that deals with murder and uses pre cogs. His son was kidnapped, driving him to PreCrime, and preventing further loss of innocent life. His faith in the system is rooted his loss, and up to his accusation, unfaltering. His faith begins to falter when he discovers that there is missing data regarding some of the victims and perpetrators. This leads him to question the system, which eventually leads those in charge to arrange for his arrest for the future murder of Jim Crow. Convinced of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet by the end of the movie we learn that there is no minority report for him. He is destined to kill Crow. His choice is to arrest him for the kidnap and murder of his son, thereby restoring justice and creating his own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Similarities And Differences Between 1984 And Never Let Me Go Compare and Contrast the extent in which the governments in 1984 and Never Let Me Go Many of my memories come from my garden in Luxembourg. My friends and I would often play a game called Bakery, which meant mashing up berries and leaves found in the garden and sprinkling them upon pats of mud. We took the roles of poor chefs who earned their livings selling baked goods, uprooting peculiar weeds and picking brightly coloured flowers to decorate these cakes . Of course now, this faded tableau depicting the act of pretending proves nonsensical, but in that moment, the game seemed real to us. As children, our imaginations generate flawless worlds. After she leaves Hailsham, Ruth s dimension deviated from the path her society set. Her aspiration of working in an office with gleaming equipment and chair with swivels and castors opposes the reality of subsequent organ donations that lies ahead of her (p28). Her fate is inevitable, and as she leaves her childhood behind, she begins to accept that her dream was unrealistic. In fact, all Hailsham s children desire a successful career. But Miss Lucy shatters their hope by telling them that none of [them] will go to America or work in supermarkets (p20). Without dreams present, Ruth loses a part of her humanity. Similarly, Winston s image of perfection is a life where he could defy the rules of the Party and the constant surveillance of the telescreen. The Golden Country allows him to visualise that world. With its grace and carelessness it seemed as though Big Brother and the Party could all be swept into nothingness (p36). In Latin American countries, they call this celebration a Quinceañera and it takes place when a young girl turns fifteen. In the United States, they celebrate a Sweet 16, once the young girl turns sixteen. Both the Quinceañera and the Sweet 16 have some similarities, but they have different traditions. However, this is not always the case in every state. Nonetheless, the Quinceañera party does not focus on the driving aspect. At a Sweet 16, the guest of honor might be given the keys to her first car. On the contrary, at a Quinceañera, the quince is usually given her first pair of high heels. Traditionally, most people choose to have a Quinceañera party. However, it is becoming more common for the young girl to skip the extravagant Sweet 16 party because she would rather get a car or go on an expensive vacation. I can understand why someone wouldn t want a big celebration, because both types of parties can be very costly. A Sweet 16 birthday party for a teenager can cost from $300 $25,000 depending on how big the party is. The cost of a Quinceañera can cost the equivalent to a wedding. However, it is very stressful for Latin American families to pay for their child s party so it is necessary to start saving from the moment their child is born. Many parents look to close family members to help contribute to the cost of the party. For example, in Cuba the budget of the party is very low, varying from $300 to $400. Due to Fidel Castro s reign, parents salaries can be as low as $20 a month making it very difficult to afford an expensive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. History And Symbolism Of The Athena Parthenon Erected during the mid fifth century BCE in Ancient Greece, the Athena Parthenon still stands prominently atop the Athena Acropolis. Built on the site of important temples and citadels destroyed during the Persians sack on Athens in 480 BCE, it is considered the greatest Greek temple ever built. The temple was built to celebrate not only Athens patron goddess Athena, but also to celebrate the Athenian people. The Athena Parthenon s great role was as the home to the Athena Parthenos; a monumental gold and ivory sculpture of the warrior goddess Athena. This paper will delve into the background, creation, history, symbolism and importance of the Athena Parthenos to the ancient Greeks. Athena was the goddess of wisdom and military victory. She born from the head of Zeus, king of the gods after he swallowed her mother Metis, a nymph before she could be born. Zeus had been told that Metis would give birth to a son after Athena who would be a threat to him, so decided to try and stop the birth of Athena. When Athena was born, Hephaestus split Zeus head open with an ax, allowing Athena to step out of his head fully grown and wearing full armor. Athena became the patron goddess of Athens, only because she beat Poseidon in a contest. Both claimed the city of Athens and the land surrounding it as their own. To prove their ownership, each deity gave a gift to the Athenians; Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident, creating a salt spring. Athena made an olive ... • 13. Harriet Jacobs And Frederick Douglas The narratives of Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglas were nothing short of powerful as their unique resilience reflected a gruesome upbringing that would then influence audiences everywhere. Immediately the reader is introduced to the gendered distinctions in narratives as Douglas has letters and statements of prominent men reinforce the validity of his work while Jacobs is forced to create a pleading tone for acknowledgement of her experience as a female slave. Although slavery was an excruciating experience that unjustly plagued millions of African Americans, gender roles and constructs allowed for distinct offenses that forced women to experience unique abuse relative to their male counterparts. The narratives of Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglas reinforced the trials of slavery with examples of educational hardship, physical trauma and differing aspirations of freedom. These factors and a few others such as motherhood and masculinity influenced their legacy in context of slavery as a gendered experience. The distinct introduction to each of their lives not only set an impression for the reader but also serves as a precursor to the different aspirations and dreams of escape that Jacobs and Douglas distinctly had. Beginning with Jacobs her narrative was written around her scarce time when she was not tending to household duties and avoiding the unclean images her master regularly imposed on her. The peaceful removal of those missiles was both a challenge and a goal for the Kennedy administration. In 1958, Kruschev had asked NATO to give up West Berlin to East Germany and by the summer of 1961, Kruschev and Kennedy met during the Vienna Summit, where Kruschev insisted upon East German control over West Berlin. On August 13, the Soviets and East Germans built a wall that limited free means of access between the Western and Eastern zones. American and Soviet forces confronted each other at Checkpoint Charlie, which controlled the passage across. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Discussions of such issues suggest that other external factors may be influencing the decisions and maintenance of many CF patients. For instance CF patients need to prioritise the way in which they self manage their treatment, this can be difficult when trying to balance family, work, education and other responsibilities and their levels of adherence may fluctuate (Sawicki, Sellers, Robinson, 2009). These fluctuations can be detrimental to their condition and may result in hospitalisation, causing additional disruptions in their daily life. However, engaging in so called normal activities might therefore also reinforce a sense of being healthy and having a nondifferent identity. Conquering a healthy balance is one which CF patients may need to adopt. One of the significant points from McCormick et al, (2005) research underlined the substantial clinical differences for females in comparison to males. The authors found that females had worst disease severity than males. Why might this difference be occurring? In 2009 Besier, Schmitz and Goldbeck, investigated the effects of relationship status on life satisfaction, as numerous findings suggest that despite the relationship status, many females CF patients still reported worse quality of life scores than males (Walters, Britton, Hodson, 1993). Those in society that simply do not know any better, such as children, are inclined to imitate what they see being done. Without censorship daily television shows are increasingly exhibiting more violence, foul language and sexuality to susceptible youth. Due to lack of censorship, explicit music lyrics and inappropriate images on music videos are being introduced to impressionable children. There is a lack of control on the internet leading to internet addiction and forces vulnerable adolescents to face cyber bullying. In a variety of mediums not enough censorship is used, which influences impressionable youth to think and behave negatively. The increasing amount of violence, foul language and sexuality available to children on TV is harmful to their development. What was once a time for children to watch TV with content suitable for their age is now directed for an older audience, Family Hour. Statistics show that this is the time most children are watching television with their family members. Despite knowing this, Since 2000 2001, the amount of sexual content during the Family Hour has increased by 22.1% (Parents Television Council 55). Summary Of Sigmund Freud s Totem And Taboo In the book, Totem and Taboo by Sigmund Freud, Freud focuses on the commonly acknowledged cultural taboo against incest and studies how it structures primitive societies. He speculates on his concept of the Oedipal Complex and how it affects society as a whole. He wishes to establish a connection between the Oedipal Complex and the phenomenon of conscience, which involves the sense of a moral code governing our lives and our sense of guilt. In order to establish this connection, Freud discusses ambivalence, our belief in the omnipotence of our thoughts, and animal phobias and sacrificial rituals in order to make a sound, reasonable argument. The male tribe members went to long measures to prevent incest, like hiding in bushes or running away from the female family member. Freud focuses on this idea of repressed incestuous desires that one innate has and has to constantly fight against, in order to fit in society. Freud deems this idea of incest and the killing of the totem animal as taboo, which is this idea of something being both clean/sacred and unclean/forbidden at the same time. Taboo is a prohibition forced upon people directed towards an internal, powerful desire that people want, but must avoid at all costs. The desire to violate this prohibition is deep in their unconscious. Freud acknowledges this internal desire and believes that: the persistence of the taboo, namely that the original desire to do the prohibited thing must also still persist among the tribes concerned. They must therefore have an ambivalent attitude towards their taboos. In their unconscious there is nothing they would like more than to violate them, but they are afraid to do so and the fear is stronger than the desire. The desire is unconscious, however, in every individual member of the tribe just as it is in neurotics (Freud 40). These people begin to have an ambivalent and guilty attitude towards what the taboo is actually inhibiting. They secretly, internally, unconsciously, love the idea of the prohibited act but ultimately feel guilty if they violate the tribal laws. This ambivalence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Once the bacterium has entered into a mammal s warm body it begins to reproduce and spread throughout the mammal s body. In modern times we have made leaps and bounds to control this illness. Control In Ernest Gaines s A Lesson Before Dying Control and its effect on entities based on observations of ENG3UT For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction Newton s third law. This law is just as accurate for human interactions; for every content dominant man, there is a sad submissive man. The symbolism used by Ernest Gaines, Henrik Ibsen, Ambrose Flack, and Isaac Asimov is used to show how control over others, leads to sadness for the inferior person in the relationship. These corrupt relationships are shown in A Lesson before Dying using the symbols, the broken books of the black children, the electric chair and Pichot s kitchen, which help illustrate how groups in control, the whites, will hurt subservient groups, the blacks. Nora s pet names, the children s maid, and Krogstad s letters are symbols found in Doll s House and help show how one person who has control over another is detrimental for the controled party. Finally, in the short stories, The Stranger That Came To Town and The Fun They Had , symbols such as the soap bar that killed the fish, the amputations of the Duvitch family and the slot used on the robot teacher, help show how a dominant society harms individual in the minority. In the book, A Lesson Before Dying, Ernest Gaines uses symbols to show how a dominant group can oppress a minority group; whites control and harm blacks. One symbol he uses to express this relationship is the broken textbooks of the black children. These books represent the dominance the white have over the black educations, when the Teacher, Wiggins, tries to get better books, Many of the books I have to use are hand me downs from the white schools, Dr. Joseph, [...] and they have missing pages. • 30. Playing against a Computer or a Human Research Background and significance Individuals participating in an interaction perceive one another as rational agents who possess beliefs, desires and intentions that might be different than their own. Assumptions made about these mental states are used to interpret and predict behavior. Conferring such attributes to an agent (human, computer, whatever) has been described as adopting an intentional stance (Dennet, 1996). Adopting an intentional stance is part of our broader ability to mentalize which involves representing and attributing mental states to oneself and others. Research concerned with understanding the neural system of mentalizing has indentified a network of regions that minimally involve the temporoparietal region (TPJ) and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) (Abu Akel and Shamay Tsoory, 2011). However, it is not completely clear the extent to which humans readily mentalize (or adopt an intentional stance) with other humans or non humans (e.g., computers). Thus an important goal of this study is to investigate how the neural network associated with adopting an intentional stance is modulated under various interaction conditions in which the interacting partner and the context are varied. Several studies employing various interactive games have been conducted to uncover the neural basis involved in adopting an intentional stance. These studies followed a similar script according to which participants were led to believe that they are playing either against a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The problem with Gibson use of stereotypes is any viewer who has little to no background in the gospels or understanding of the crucifixion, will see the Jewish people has completely involved in Jesus final hours of being tortured and murdered. Also having a negative approach towards the Jewish people in the film will also push any induvial who already blames the Jews for Jesus death even further, creating more anti sematic movements. In creating the movie Gibson, being a biblical literalist, picked parts from all four gospels, which allowed for more options in shaping the film because each gospel has a similar but different view. Gibson also used outside research to help the film. • 32. Frederick Douglass And Karl Marx And Friedrich Engels Both authors Frederick Douglass and Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels focus on the topic of freedom. Both authors argue that they are being oppressed. However, this is where the similarities end. Engels and Marx believed that capitalism was a social system used by the proletariats to oppress the bourgeoisie, and that the only way to be free was to fight back against the system. On the other hand, Frederick Douglass focuses more on his individual story and his struggle for freedom, while he tries to appeal to his audience from an ethical point of view. Frederick Douglass biography revolves around the idea of freedom. After seeing a traumatizing incident as a child, Douglass slowly begins to realize that he is not a free human being, but is a slave owned by other people. He is surrounded by a society that devalues him and people like him, and systematically worked to keep them ignorant and submissive. In this society, it is made clear that no slave is special, and everyone is replaceable. Rather than accept this, Douglass struggles to maintain what little autonomy he was allowed to have. When his one of his masters, Thomas Auld, bans his mistress, Sophia, from teaching Douglass how to read, Douglass learned from the young boys on the street. His biography shows him transforming from an ignorant child into his older, more learned self. Douglass sees the idea of slaves in a country that is as passionate as about its revolution as America hypocritical; in fact, this is the basis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Gingko Bilboa Case Study Gingko Bilboa is an amazing plant source to take alongside the plant that I wrote about, St. Johns Worts. When taking Gingko Bilboa and St. Johns Worts together, there will be an additional amount of neurotransmitters such as gamma and niacin. A well rounded anxiety/ADHD supplement system is created when taken with an additional source of L theanine (Editor, n.d.). Thankfully this is an established plant that is not primarily sought after within areas that may exploit people for their resources, such as biopiracy. Many areas are warned against foreigners who become too interested in a natural resource that have healing properties. They are leery, and for good reason, due to the value of the resource to their immediate needs, and the fear that it will be wiped out with compensation only in the form of the drug that is then created to be. I do believe that it is important to compensate the indigenous people for the resource that was theirs and that was exploited. However, how do you put an expected value for the cost and benefits of something that does not hold a monetary value, but instead, a necessity to their way ... Chemists, along with bio chemists, have tried a number of ways to synthesize the ingredient with the end result being either too small of a yield, or a yield was created but done so with a complex route and many issues to overcome (Huang, Wang, Chen, 2014). The reason that it is so difficult is that the researchers are attempting to fully synthesize the ingredient, hypericin, and want to do so with a great enough yield to be productive. Synthesis of hypericin without the ingredient itself has been achieved by using various routes and ending with a 50% yield. However, it was done so with many obstacles low yield, varying routes, large volumes of solvents, the high cost of reagents and solvents, and difficulty in scaling up the reaction (Huang, Wang, Chen, ... AT RISE: SIR MICHAEL GAMBON [Socrates] appears in the room from the front door. He s wearing a white robe and smells of rancid odors. His apparition causes the interruption of the uproar. DANIEL RAD says to the elder jokingly. DANIEL This is not a homeless shelter old man. SIR MICHAEL Excuse me, but I think I definitely am where I m supposed to be. The shrill sound of your argument brought me here, and I want to understand what is this issue worth keeping me from resting in peace [literally]. However, according to De Botton and Nietzsche fulfillment is an illusion . Hardships are the reason to our happiness. We should focus on avoiding pain not seeking pleasure . In other words, happiness comes from the absence of happiness. You cannot be constantly happy and not everyone understands happiness the same way. Because happiness itself cannot be defined as an undeniable truth. It varies. However, there is some truths in it. Not long ago, my good friend Kant and I were discussing this matter and he said to me something that I consider true. He said that Happiness and Virtue are two distinct things. Happiness is not proportional to well doing Only Virtue is good without any implications, no matter what it achieves. Gifts of nature such as intelligence, qualities of temperament like courage or perseverance, are often good but may be used for evil ends unless directed by a good will. Gifts of fortune which include riches and health can also be used for good or ill. Even moderation and self control are not good in themselves but require a good will . In other words, Happiness is not the Supreme Good. We thrive to live life with Virtue. Happiness comes and goes. There are some aspects in architecture that do bring happiness. But they do not last forever and that should be something to embrace instead of being avoided. Hell, for most of my life I lived on the streets and have been overwhelmed by happiness multiple times because of its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Why Are Humans Attracted To Cats Essay Why are humans so attracted to cats? Cats like dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, adapting to humans and being part of our everyday lives. In many civilizations cats have even been negated as divine. In ancient Egypt for example they were worshipped like gods and deemed holy. The position of cats in society varies on the civilization and the time period, but they nonetheless exist next to humans to some extent. This bond is unique because cats are independent, and are individualistic creatures. More than dogs, cow s, sheep s, or any other domesticated animal cats are the closest to being equal independent companions. There is a unique bond between cats and humans that does not exist between any other animal and our history together is one of compatriots rather than dominance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As stated in the article How Cats Became Domesticated , they hypothesized that cats were accepted by humans because of wild cats hunting rodents in agrarian civilizations as long as 9,000 years ago. This hypothesis carries weight as cats are excellent hunters and are still praised for killing unwanted rodents even today. I personally know family members that only own cats for dealing with rodents in their property. These family members are still maintaining the traditional cat human relationship from our ancestors. What was interesting in that same article was when they stated, Cats, unlike dogs, are really only semi domesticated... we were surprised to find DNA evidence of their domestication . This explains the independent nature of cats that allows them to hunt rodents without the guidance of humans. Cats carry in a wild nature that keeps them self sustained and unlike other domesticated animals are not completely dominated by their owner. Being semi domesticated does not mean that cats are completely indifferent to humans; cats still have a unique connection to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Of Mice And Men Friendship Comparison Of Mice and Men Compare/Contrast Essay Friendship does not have the same definition to all people. Some people look for their friends to always be there for them, but some people consider someone a friend as long as they are there to listen to you. Therefore, friendship is interpreted by each person. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and the poem Always There by Ryan C. Wilks have similar messages about the way they see friendship friendship, but also have different depictions of friendship at the same time. Both writings depict friendship in a way of having someone by your side. In Of Mice and Men Lennie says, An I got you. We got each other, that s what, that gives a hoot in hell about us. (Steinbeck, 104). This quote says that their friendship is strong because they have each other to care about. In Wilks poem he says, Doesn t matter what mood I m in, You re always there. (Wilks, line 5 6). Those quotes depict friendship in a way of just being their for each other. Therefore, the messages in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... George killed Lennie because he did not want to see Curley shoot him in the gut and leave him to a slow and painful death. The mercy killing was an act of friendship between George and Lennie. The poem has a different job for a friend. The poem states, You will always be there for me (Wilks, line 26). According to Always There a friend has a job to always be there for you by your side. • 37. The Value of Learning Styles The Value of Learning Styles Learning styles and their value have been debated for some time. Students may have a preferred style but this doesn t mean that educators should use just one form to accommodate an individual s style. Using a multitude of styles will keep a student s interest and will ensure a more solid understanding of the information presented. Many researchers believe that everyone has a preferred learning style and have developed a list of questions and if answered truthfully, are designed to indicate what preferred style the learner has. The basic learning styles are auditory, visual and kinesthetic. The auditory learners prefer information presented in a lecture format; Visual learners will do best with images or ... With all of these varying ideas on how to categorize students way of learning it becomes difficult to know how to best accomplish teaching for a group of different learners. While it would seem that students benefit from learning in their preferred style or type the reality is that there may be more to this. The unfortunate truth is the studies that investigate teaching to the student s style are for the most part flawed. The few that are not flawed show no benefit to teaching to the student s style. (Guterl, S., 2013, p.2). Cognitive ability and the subject being taught may play more of a role in the student s ability to learn and retain. The idea to cater to students strengths seems counter productive. If a student struggles with visual learning, it may be advantageous to develop that shortcoming. The goal of any education program is to leave with more knowledge. The idea of stretching the abilities of students will only benefit them in the end. When a child is very little and unable to walk we don t discourage them from developing the strength and coordination to walk, even though there are other ways of moving around. We know that in time they will learn to walk and eventually run. We encourage them to stretch their abilities and by that develop more abilities. The same could be said of learning styles; by a student learning in a style that is less desirable they are developing a new strength. Another way to look at learning styles is the ...
