Longitude Essay
Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time
is written by Dava Sobel. The book is called Longitude because it is about a clock maker who was
able to determine longitude. Determining longitude was the superlative scientific question in the
eighteenth century that Galileo and Newton were not able to resolve.
The principal inspiration behind the invention completed in this book is that many sailors were lost at
seas as a result of their ignorance regarding longitude. So, without the competence to determine
longitude, many innocent lives were disintegrated at seas.

1 or H 1 for short. H 1 was bar shaped, built out of shinny brass, and was big in size. His second
attempt was called H 2. H 2 was a heavy weight of 86 pounds, but fitted into a small box as John
promised it would. H 2 was also bar shaped and included an implement to ensure a unchanging drive
and a more agreeable temperature reimbursement device. Although its motion was adequately regular
and exact for finding the longitude of a ship within the nearest limits proposed by the Parliament, H 2
was not good enough for Harrison. So, Harrison devoted nineteen years to build H 3. The H 3 was the
leanest of the sea clocks and was small enough to meet the definition of amp;#8220;shipshape. ; H 3
contained bearings in the caged ball that smoothened the operation with moving parts. Unlike H 1 and
H 2, H 3 ran on two large circular balances wheels linked by metal ribbons. In addition, it was
controlled by a single spiral spring. Furthermore, Harrison introduced a bi metallic strip in the H 3.
The bi metallic strip compensates immediately and automatically for any changes in temperature that
could effect the clock amp;#8217;s going rate. But after the H 3 was completed Harrison realized that
a small watch might be the greatest device to figure out the longitude. As a result, John Harrison
completed H 4 in1759. It was very minute for a sea clock, and weighed only three pounds. It had two

The Blue Mask by Lou Reed
Lou Reed s, The Blue Mask
Although the visionary singer, song writer, Lou Reed, gained his fame in the 70 s, he reached the
highest peak of his career with the album The Blue Mask, in which he explored the elements of human
flaws. With this album, he stripped down from his dramatic work in the 70 s and explored new
techniques along with his small, tight knit band. The Blue Mask received excellent reviews from
critics and consumers because it allowed listeners to have a personal connection with Reed and
showed them a different side apart from the public persona. Overall, the achievements and praise were
well deserved for the hard work he and his band put in.
Lou Reed, a New York native, attended the University of Syracuse and studied poetry and journalism.
He later became the lead singer for the band, Velvet Underground during the 60 s. He is commonly
known today as the one who started the punk rock era and also brought a stormy dissonance to the
foreground, helping to expand the vocabulary of the electric guitar (Rolling Stone Bio). He broke
away from his partnership with Velvet Underground and headed for England in pursuit of a solo
career. Over a decade later, he released the album, The Blue Mask.
The Blue Mask was under the direction of RCA Records and was originally distributed on a 12 inch
vinyl stereo gramophone record. RCA Records owned the phonographic copyrights, as well as regular
copyrights. Lou Reed produced the entire album with the help of

INTRODUCTION
A system is created to solve problems, for example, work out someone s wages. The systems approach
can be said to be an organised way of dealing and solving the problem.
A life cycle in system analysis is a term used to describe a process for planning, creating, testing, and
deploying an information system. The systems development life cycle concept applies to a range of
hardware and software configurations, as a system can be composed of hardware only, software only,
or a combination of both.
General system development life cycles that exist include: o Waterfall stages, requirements, design,
implementation, verification, maintenance. o Agile stages, define requirements, integrate test(X3),
feedback, approved? yes=release to market, no= record incorporate changes, adjust track, next
iteration (back to beginning). o Spiral plan, test, analyses, development of testing (back to the
beginning until everything is complete and there are not problems found in testing.)

Gene Expression Of Soybeans ( Glycine Max )
Gene Expression of Soybeans (Glycine max) in Response to Bacterial Inoculants, Rhizoboost,
Defensor and Rhizobium under abiotic Stress (heat condition) in Glycine max
Proposal by Noor Sairafi and Dr. Sue Hum Musser
Western Illinois University, Department of Biology
Abstract Several microorganisms have the ability to promote plant growth and produce compounds
which are known to stimulate plant defenses by inducing systemic resistance (ISR) in attacked plants
(1). Bacillus species are commonly used in formulating microbial fertilizers due to their rapid
beneficial effects in colonizing plant root and establishing Rhizobia bacteria mutualism inside their
root structure. In this paper research, I will observe this unique interaction by examining the gene
expression of soybeans (Glycine max) and their response to bio inoculants under a heat stress. I will
use four different treatments: control, Defensor, Rhizoboost, Defensor and Rhizobium, and
Rhizoboost and Rhizobium. Once the infected seeds germinate, I will incubate soybean seeds at 25 oC
and 37 oC for approximately 16 hours followed by grinding seeds for RNA purification. Gene
expression data will be then obtained and collected via qPCR analysis followed by microarray
analysis for more data confirmation. Additionally, a two way ANOVA and a Tukey s multiple
comparison test will be used to determine the significance of the data. This study will give us a good
idea on the effect of bacterial fertilizers (Defensor,

Executive Compensation
EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION
1. HOW IS IT DETERMINED?
Executive compensation generally consists of a mix of four components:
Annual Base Salary
Annual Incentive or bonus plans tied to short term performance measures.
Long Term Incentives consisting in a mix of restricted stocks, stocks options and other long term
performance plans tied to shareholder return or financial performance.
Benefits plans.
As a rule of thumb, the base salary constitutes 30% of total compensation, the annual incentive
another 20%, the benefits about 10% and long term incentives or the wealth creation portion of the
compensation about 40%. Indeed, before the financial crisis, there was a lot of board attention to
improving the relationship between pay and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Executives can trade for entirely legitimate reasons, such as to raise money to meet a tax bill or simply
to diversify. But of course they must avoid trading on nonpublic information, and that can lead to
sticky situations, since executives do possess just such information much of the time.
Regulatory efforts to find a way around this conundrum and allow executives to trade, a Wall Street
Journal analysis suggests, are so flawed they have left a confusing landscape that can both raise
suspicions about trades that are innocent, and provide cover for others that are less so.
Trading by specific insiders, such as employees, is commonly permitted as long as it does not rely on
material information not in the public domain. However most jurisdictions require such trading be
reported so that these can be monitored. In the United States and several other jurisdictions, trading
conducted by corporate officers, key employees, directors, or significant shareholders must be
reported to the regulator or publicly disclosed, usually within a few business days of the trade.
5. SHOULD SHAREHOLDERS HAVE MORE SAY?
Proposals that shareholders should have a greater direct say over managerial remuneration have been a
by product of the concerns expressed. debate on this point, however, has been largely speculative.

The physical characteristics of participants are presented in table 1. Although there was no significant
difference between the age of men and women in the study, the heaight and body mass of the men
were significantly greater than women P 0.05.
Figure 1 illustrates the significant increase in maximal oxygen uptake when comparing submaximal
treadmill ergometer and cycle ergometer tests (P 0,05). Both men and women showed an increase of
10% in maximal oxygen consumption measured in mL/Kg/min.

Determining VO2max can be important for not only elite athletes in enhancing performance but also
the general public in maintaining good health and well being.
Consistent with preceding literature (Jones McConnell, 1999; Carter et al., 2000; Basset Boulay,
2000), both men and women showed a significant increase in estimated maximal oxygen uptake on
the treadmill ergometer, with a mean estimated VO2max of 50.5±9.4 mL/Kg/min compared to the
cycle ergometer averaging a VO2max of 45.5±9.8 mL/Kg/min. The commonly accepted reasoning to
account for this difference is that the treadmill running engages a greater muscle mass (the swinging
motion of the arms and the stabilization of the core muscles) compared to cycling which
predominately uses leg muscles and therefore leads to a greater demand for oxygen supply to skeletal
muscle tissue resulting in a greater amount of inspired air and a greater maximal oxygen uptake value
(Jones McConnell, 1999; Carter et al., 2000).
In addition to these findings, it was found that men had a significantly higher maximal oxygen uptake
compared to women across both modes, with men recording a mean VO2max of 53.6±91 mL/Kg/min
on the treadmill ergometer and 47.7±10.7 mL/Kg/min on the cycle ergometer compared to the average
treadmill and cycle ergometer VO2max of 45.2±7.3 mL/Kg/min and 41.4±6.2 mL/Kg/min

The Garlic Rainforest
Garlic mustard was introduced from Europe either accidently or intentionally as a cooking herb in the
United States. Within a short time span, they can spread from small area by overtaking large forest
area. The seeds of the garlic mustard remain in the soil for five or more years. The plant identification
phase is formed by the leaves being alternative, being triangular to heart shaped, or being scalloped
edged and also giving off an odor of garlic when crushed. This odor can be used for distinguishing
between garlic mustard from native plants such as evergreen violets, piggy back plant and fringecup
plants as well. It will also help to distinguish non native plants such as the silver dollar plant.
Garlic mustard has two growing seasons. The first growing season is in early March and then the
second growing season occurs in April. The second growing season includes plants that have flower
stalks that range from 12 to 48 inches tall. It is also topped with a cluster of white, four petaled
flowers. The seeds of garlic mustard form in narrow, green seed pods ... Show more content on

This method involves cutting the shrub off close to the ground and then applying an herbicide to the
cut surfaces using a spray bottle, paintbrush or roller. After the cut, whether to use oil or water soluble

water should be applied to the ⅓ outer top of the stump within minutes of making cut. When utilizing
oil in herbicide, plan to cut and then later return to treat the stumps. Thus, applying oil soluble to

Class Differences in Blood Brothers, by Willy Russell Essay
Willy Russell creates a play to show us the class differences that existed in Liverpool in the 1980 s. He
does this by showing us the contrasting lives of the two boys and their mothers. Mrs Lyons has an
easy life and Mrs Johnston has a hard life and has to work hard to earn a living. The same applies to
the boys as Mickey has the hard life and Eddie has the easy life. Willy Russell also shows us that
education, living conditions, housing and wealth can be affected as a direct result of your class and
social background. This meant that the people from working class backgrounds had a harder life
because they didn t have the same opportunities. During the 1980 s a lot of people were made

She is trying to earn a living as a cleaner which is a poor job and she is struggling because a cleaner
can t afford to feed seven mouths.
Finally Russell shows us that she is in such a desperate situation that she ends up giving her child
away. This makes you feel sorry for her because she is on her own and has to cope with everything
herself.
This tells us that because of her social background her life chances are limited. Russell shows us she is
uneducated through her superstition. Today if a woman is left alone then she gets help from the
government through income support, child benefit and other kinds of financial backing. But at this
time the government didn t offer financial help to the people so many people like Mrs Johnston
suffered. But life is still not equal because many people still can t afford designer clothes or afford to
send their children to private school.
This has changed now because then the government didn t provide any financial help for single mums.
Also at this time there were high levels of redundancies and unemployment. This meant it was harder
for her to get a job and provide for her family. When she says Next week
I ll be earning, there ll be loads of stuff to eat . This suggests that she is looking for work to make her
life better. At the time this was written, people lived in overcrowded homes in the slums of the cities.
This meant that living conditions were poor

uncomfortable to watch women perform item numbers like Baby Doll and not have a problem when
watching scenes similar to Dostana when John Abraham is swimming in trunks. Is this because of the
stereotypes that Indian society has about how decent women should behave? Or is it due to the
vulgarity of the performance? The story and themes of Bollywood movies traditionally portray the

Enron And Enron Of Enron
During the Enron debacle, it was workers who took the pounding, not bankers. Not only did Enron
employees lose their jobs, many lost their retirement savings. That s because they were at the bottom
of the investing food chain. In July of 1985, Houston Natural Gas merged with InterNorth, to create
Enron, and Kenneth Lay became CEO the following year. In 1989, Enron began trading natural gas
commodities. In 1997, Andrew Fastow devised the first steps to hide debts and inflate profits and one
year later, he was named the CFO of Enron. In the year 2000, shares of Enron reached a peak of $90.

During the West Coast power crisis, homes went dark and street lights were out in California, causing
injuries and accidents. But the danger didn t stop Enron s energy traders from having a good laugh.
Newly released evidence shows that years before the crisis, Enron schemed to manipulate markets.
The new tapes routinely recorded by Enron to protect their own deals, and later obtained by
Snohomish County Public Utility District Number 1, confirmed what had been constantly reported for
four years. Enron secretly shut down power plants so they could cause, and then cash in on, the crisis.
Power plant operators were coached on how to lie to officials. Enron also pulled power out of states
like California, causing emergency conditions to worsen. The shut downs and pull outs triggered sky
high power prices and when states complained, the traders instructed the states to leave them alone,
and let them make a little bit of money. When the schemes began to unravel, employees blamed the
men running Enron. Mark to market accounting was introduced by former Enron President and CEO,
Jeff Skilling. This allowed Enron to book potential future profits on the very day the deal was signed,
even if some states had yet to deregulate their power markets. No matter how little cash actually came
in the door, to the outside world, Enron s profits could be whatever Enron said they were. Enron s

Why Are Fragile States Difficult
All countries are part of a global economy that is constantly trying to develop and progress.
Sometimes, however these developmental stages arrive in countries at different times, some later than
others. With this lack of development emerges fragile states which may endanger not only themselves
and neighbouring states but, also international security, peace, and overall global economy. These
unstable countries, riddled with poverty pose an increasing threat towards causing intensified
conflicts. To counter these threats and conflicts in attempts to keep and restore peace, international
humanitarian interventions are often used. In theory, these humanitarian interventions are foolproof

These standards include a right to life with dignity; distinction between combatants and non

Teens In YA Literature
YA Literature has been around since the 19th century. During that time books for
children and teens were about the right morals and their religion. It was thought that children s
and teens should not be exposed to fictional stories. Then later down the years, YA Literature
developed into something else in the 1960s. According to Ashley Strickland, a reporter for CNN,
the term young adult was coined by Young Adult Library Services Association during the
1960s to represent the 12 18 age range . YA Literature is targeted at teens around this age.
Also, in regards to this article, these books were single problem novels and teens were
becoming bored. In order to take it up a notch, novels began to involve horror along with the
realistic issues. Books began to skyrocket, teens were addicted to their new genre, a genre just
for them (Strickland). The question that was being asked was why are teens so interested in
books about fiction or more like paranormal and dystopian stories? Well Teens are caught
between two worlds, childhood and adulthood, and in YA, they can navigate those two worlds
and sometimes dualities of other worlds (Strickland). They can imagine what could ve

Louisiana Purchase History
What would most people do with 15 million dollars? Take a nice vacation, or buy a nice beach front
property? Buying a huge lump of unexplored, and undocumented land most likely wouldn t be anyone
s first pick. However, it was Thomas Jefferson s, when buying the Louisiana territory. The Louisiana
Purchase was significant to American History and it led to the Civil War. The purchase was significant
to America, because it nearly doubled the young nation s size at a extremely cheap price, and allowed
many western settlers to build their homes and use the resources provided by the land. Also, the
purchase led into the Civil War, due to its controversy, and whether or not slavery should be allowed
on this new land. The Louisiana Purchase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As much as the purchase brought promise and opportunity, it also brought a lot of stress upon a nation
on the verge of a civil war. During this time period, tensions were building between people who
believed in slavery, and others who did not. When this new land mass was introduced to our country,
the people and the government immediately began the battle over the legalization of slavery in the
territory. This controversy, was propelling us further into the Civil War. The battle over slavery was
only half of the problem. The other half, came in the form of political party disagreements. The
democrats believed in giving more power to the states, and the federalists believed in more power to
the federal government. Thomas Jefferson s decision to purchase the land essentially disregarded his
basic views as a democrat and made many people furious. In closing, the stress on our shaken nation,
along with the ferocity of the people, rocketed our nation into the Civil War.
Mixed emotions and reactions came from the people during the time of the Louisiana Purchase, as it
made an impact on American history and led to the Civil War. The Louisiana Purchase proved to be
very important to US history by doubling the young nation s size at a extremely cheap price, and
allowing many western settlers to build their homes and use the resources provided by the land. It also

Identifying The Unknown Bacteria From A Mixed Culture
Identification of Enterobacter Aerogenes

Unknown #19
The purpose of this study is to identify an unknown bacterium from a mixed culture. We identified the
unknown bacteria through different biochemical tests and identified the many metabolic capabilities of
the bacteria. Studying and discovering unknown bacteria is very important in the health field as it may
lead to new medicines and innovations for current, existing diseases as well as any upcoming diseases.
The discovery of unknown bacteria is very useful in the pharmaceutical industry, as most of the
products prepared are made based on these unknown organisms.
The biochemical tests used to identify the unknown bacteria included: phenol red broth test (glucose,
lactose, and sucrose), methyl red and Voges Proskauer test, citrate test, indole test, H2S production
test, urea test and motility test. The PR broths are used to differentiate members of Enterobacteriaceae
and to distinguish these members from other gram negative rods. The PR broths are useful in
determining a bacterium s fermentation abilities. If the bacterium is able to utilize the carbohydrate,
then the acid production from fermentation lowers pH, which in turn turns the broth yellow. However,
if the bacterium is unable to utilize the carbohydrate, but does utilize the peptone, which produces the
by product ammonia, the medium will have a rise in pH turning the broth pink.
The methyl red and Voges Proskauer tests

Dr Dozer Summary
Throughout Dr. Dozer s presentation on his work, I constantly made connections to what we learned
in the histology unit. I especially remember when he mentioned the stomach ulcers and how they
formed; I recalled back to the test and how that made sense because the stomach is not lined with the
needed epithelium to protect it from the stomach acid, therefore creating the ulcers. I also found it odd
yet funny when Dr. Dozer mentioned that ulcers where the most fun and exciting part of his job.
Additionally, I made a connection to when we studied the cells and how they formed cancer,
specifically to throat cancer and how it would have to be removed. The most shocking part was how
the cancer was surgically removed; having to remove the entire throat

An Examination of the Factors of Algerian Foreign Policy
It is commonly held that a compelling explanation of the foreign policy orientation of any country
cannot be well understood without an examination of its determinants and guiding principles. A state s
foreign policy is also conditional on both domestic and external factors, which may change from time
to time, thus forcing it to review its foreign policy to ensure that it operates in the best possible
conditions to achieve its objectives. An examination of any country s foreign policy must, if only by
way of background, take into consideration the past, for history itself often determines the boundaries
within which current politics evolve. In the case of Algeria, colonial history gave rise to many
determinants which still exercise pertinent influences on Algerian foreign policy: factors whose
origins lie in the past but which continue to impact contemporary policy.
The roots of independent Algeria s revolutionary foreign policy are commonly attributed to the impact
of the extremely revolutionary national ideology acquired as a result of the sufferings endured by the
Algerians in their resistance to and struggle against the French occupation and to the experience
acquired by the Algerian diplomacy during wartime, as well as to the indifference of Western powers,
particularly the United States, towards Algeria s revolutionary war against the French (Stone 228 229).
Algeria s foreign policy constants include the right to decolonization, non intervention in domestic

Essay on Cells and their parts
Cells are some of the smallest organisms around. All living things consist of cells, and yet they are
invisible to the naked eye. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. Cells are made up
of many different parts which allow them to function properly.
All cells are separated from their surrounding by a cell membrane. The cell membrane regulates what
enters and leaves the cell and also aids in the protection and support of the cell. A cell membrane is
similar to the walls surrounding your house.
In plants the cell membrane is surrounded by a cell wall. The cell wall is outside the cell membrane,
and its purpose is to help the membrane protect and support the cell. Since the cell wall is very porous,

Chromosomes contain the genetic information that must be passed to each new generation of cells.
Chromosomes are what you pass on to your children to make them who they are, it s the DNA of a
cell.
The cytoplasm is the area between the nucleus and the cell membrane. The cytoplasm contains many
important structures. This area is basically the main place where you will find structures that help the
cells stay alive.
Mitochondrion is an importance structure that lies in the cytoplasm area. Mitochondrion is the plural
word for mitochondria, which is the key organelle that converts energy from one form to another.
Mitochondria changes the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient
for the cell to use. The mitochondrion contains two special membranes. The outer membrane
surrounds the organelle, and the inner membrane has many folds that increase the surface area of the
mitochondrion.
Ribosomes are the structures in which proteins are made. Cells that are active in protein synthesis are
often crowded with ribosomes. Ribosomes are composed of RNA and protein. Some ribosomes are
attached to the membranes, and some are free in the cytoplasm. Ribosomes are among the smallest of
organelles. They are no larger than 25 nanometers in diameter. A nanometer is equal to one billionth of
a meter.

Types Of Transport Within A Cell
There are many different types of transport within a cell that can end up being very complex. On the
outside of the cell is the plasma membrane that protects it from the outside environment. The plasma
membrane is very picky about what it allows through it. It wants to let in oxygen and nutrients, but
keep out harmful bacteria. It also wants to keep in the proteins and nutrients that are already in the
membrane. Because of this property, the plasma membrane is called a selectively permeable
membrane and it has two basic transport processes. In passive transport processes it is the
concentration differences that drives the movement. The two passive transports are diffusion and
filtration. In active transport processes the cell provides energy in the form of Adenosine Triphosphate
(ATP) to power the process. The two active transport processes are primary which is driven directly by
ATP or secondary which is driven indirectly by ATP (Marieb P61). For the most part, molecules will
diffuse passively through the plasma membrane if they are small enough, but they must be aided by a
concentration gradient. A concentration gradient is when there is a difference in concentration of a
substance from one area to another (Amerman P75). This property of the plasma membrane is critical
to the cell. Without this property the cell would not be able to exchange the oxygen and nutrients it
needs to with the extracellular fluid (the fluid located in the spaces between the cells). The

Swatch spent approximately 30% of the retail price of its watches on advertising as its marketing plan.
This was about two times high compared with the industry average. They also were able to use unique
marketing events and advertising schemes to promote Swatch, emphasizing on below the line
activities. It also had decentralized marketing and centralized manufacturing systems.
Additionally, the company created the Swatch collectors Club for its loyal consumers. The Swatch
street journal, a magazine that included all information about Swatch in trends, was produced. It also
chose a nontraditional retail approach, creating unexpected points of purchase. For example, it
launched the Veggie Swatch line in fruit and vegetable market. SMH pursued shop in shop systems or
miniboutiques so that consumers could only focus on the Swatch products, not displaying its products
with other watches.
Those strategies helped Swatch lead this market in the watch industry, selling 26 million swatches in
1992 and reversing SMH s fortunes. Despite its success, there are some concerns whether the success
of the Swatch would continue. Still, the world watch market was highly fragmented except Citizen,
Seiko, and SMH. There were numerous watch competitors in Switzerland, Asia, and Unite states. The
market share of Swatch was still relatively low in the single digits due to

Oppression Of Women In Pakistan
The portrayal of women in the Middle East, specifically in Pakistan, women face discrimination on a
regular basis and struggle to obtain equal rights in comparison to men in Pakistan. Some of the
reasons women are oppressed in Pakistan because of the dominance and control men have over
women. Since the government doesn t utilize the opportunity to protect women and uses religious
defenses as an excuse to treat women poorly, women continue to be treated like second class citizens.
Oppression of Women in Pakistan began after independence in 1947 and continues to negatively
impact women today. Women face inequality in being protected by the government, unequal
education, and political representation. The British controlled India and began to exploit Indians for
their use of raw materials. Britain established power by controlling trade and created the East India
Company. Britain Westernized India and influenced Muslims and Hindus to collaborate. Conflicts
arose when the majority, Hindus, had more political power and influence over Muslims. Upon trying
to gain more political power the Muslim League was established and met on December 1906 to
discuss ways to improve and support political representation of Muslims(Ahmed 110). A Muslim
activist, Jinnah, used his power in Congress to encourage other Muslims to establish more
representation in government. Religious conflicts and tension became prominent when the Indian
National Congress began to favor Hindu movements and Hindu nationalism spread across India.
During the 1920 s after the Muslim League tried to band with congress to challenge Britain control,
Britain favored Hindu culture and dismissing the needs of Muslims(Admed 110). Disregarding
Muslim needs provoked fear of oppression insinuating Muslims to rebel. Acts of rebellion occurred
until a meeting was established to form a political compromise between peace activist, Gandhi, and
the Muslim League to achieve more equal opportunities for Muslims. Muslims were unable to achieve
a compromise because they still had insufficient power in India in comparison to the Hindu
population. Without a compromise the Muslim activists strived to gain political power through
separating powers in India because many were

The Disappearance Of Childhood Analysis
In the book, The Disappearance of Childhood, Postman s overall claim is that childhood is
disappearing because children are able to get access to information about adult secrets.
I agree with Postman s main argument; however, I disagree with some of his claims that he used to
support the main argument.
In chapter 1, Postman claimed that children who are participating in games such as Little League
baseball and Pee Wee football are playing because they are pursuing reputation, not because they
wanted to do something fun, or because they were pursuing pleasure. I disagree with Postman s claim
since I believe in the exact opposite. I believe that for a child to play sports in their own time, they

Similarities Between Napoleon And Snowball And The Russian...
How did the characters of Napoleon and Snowball fill in the gap between reality and imagination with

The Introduction
The leading historians told us so much information about the Russian Revolution starting from the
appearance of the new ideologies related to people like Carl Marx, many changes happened to the
Soviet society so that no one could predict what was going to happen. The dilemma was based on the
fact that many changes happened to the different classes of the Soviet society starting from the leading

The Discussion of the Question of the Study
Many people in Russia who used to live in the basements during the Tsar Era had become living in the

There are other changes related to the ideologies that moved life in Russia. These ideologies had been

The Martian Chronicles is a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury These stories all relate to the
idea of humans visiting mars, but are only connected by the loosest of threads. At times, it can appear

The Martian Chronicles, along with much of Ray Bradbury s work, has been criticized many times in

Bradbury was not interested in space travel, prognosis, or time travel (Clute 201) but merely used
these devices to support his stories of people s lives and emotions. Bradbury used science fiction not

The messages of The Martian Chronicles speak about a myriad of ideas, not all having to do with

Discuss The Impact Of Divorce On Children
According to Virginia Rutter, there has been an ongoing argument of whether or not divorce is a good
thing (Rutter 159). An argument is made that the decline of the impact of divorce on children is due to
the number of children involved, decreasing from 1.34 children to less than one child (Rutter 159).
However, the statement of the impact of divorce being lessened due to less children being caught in
the middle appears to be intellectually disingenuous. Regardless of their being less children, the
children that are involved from the divorce will still be impacted greatly. Nevertheless, Rutter is
correct in saying that there are some sets of circumstances where divorce is the better option. When
my father divorced my mother, they decided that

Analytical Essay On Night By Elie Wiesel
I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We
must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the
tormentor, never the tormented. (Elie Wiesel) The book Night by Elie Wiesel tells his story of trying to
survive in a concentration camp during the holocaust. Family is an important part of the story because
it shows us that family can be what keeps some people alive, family becomes important when things
get rough, and that once you lose your humanity family means nothing.
First and foremost, family is important when things get rough. In the beginning of the book the Nazis
were rounding up Jews in the Ghettos. The families in the Ghettos did their best to stick together but
some families were broken apart. When Elie and his father get to the concentration camp they do their
best to stay together. Elie says he s 18 and his dad says that he is 40. It keeps them alive and together.
Elie does everything he can to keep his dad going. He makes sure he keeps walking and that he stays
awake. He takes beatings for his dad, and he even tried to keep him alive when ... Show more content

Elie stayed strong by trying to keep his father alive. Elie did anything for his dad while they were in
the concentration camps. They weren t as close before all the bad things happened but they knew they

great heights trying to keep him going which essentially helped himself in the long run. He made sure
his father was walking, and when they stopped to rest in the snow Elie made sure he would not fall
asleep. Elie even tried to keep his dad going when he was very sick. He gave his soup to his dad even
though he needed it more. Trying to keep his dad alive mad them grow a stronger bond and helps his

Commitment to Quality (T.Q.M) (1) Definition and functions It is increasingly the case that a firm
which cannot meet the external customers quality requirements will go out of business, so that the
needs to conformity with quality products so become a prerequisite for staying in business.
International Standardisation Organisation identifies Total Quality Management as That aspect of the
overall management function that determines and implements the quality policy and, as such, is the
responsibility of top management. That is to say the nature of the TQM is an approach for companies
to get long term success through customer satisfaction. Successful companies understand the powerful
impact customer defined quality can have on business. They know that once the customers do not
satisfied with quality of the product they will go elsewhere and chose the product which owns better
quality in other companies. As a result, the company will lose their market share more seriously, the
reputation may be ruined by not manufacture to an approved quality standard. For this reason many
competitive firms continually increase their quality standards. For example, both the Ford Motor
Company and the Honda Motor Company have announced that they are making customer satisfaction
their number one priority. The slow economy of 2003 impacted sales in the auto industry. Both firms
believe that the way to rebound is through improvements in quality, and each has outlined specific

What Are The Negative Effects Of The Santa Ana By Joan Didion
In her essay, Didion uses a very ominous and foreboding tone to convey the topic of the Santa Ana
winds. From the very beginning of the essay, the reader is given a feeling that these Santa Ana winds
possess a type of evil in them that seem to affect people for the worse. The reader is never allowed to
look past the negative effects of the Santa Ana winds. I will explain how Joan Didion does this in the
following examples.
In order to give a greater sense of authenticity and awe, Didion utilizes a wide range of descriptive
phrases. For example, There is something uneasy in the L.A. air this afternoon, some unnatural
stillness, some tension. What it means is that tonight a Santa Ana will begin to blow, a hot wind from
the northeast whining down through the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes, blowing up sandstorms out
along Route 66, drying the hills and the nerves to the flash point. This opening group of sentences
clearly describe the Santa Ana winds and give them a corporeal form. These sentences ... Show more

In the entire essay, not once are the foehn winds ever mentioned to be a positive force, nor are any
scientific facts stated. She only tells of how terrible and mysterious the winds are and that only
miserable circumstances follow in their wake. For instance, .... we feel it. The baby frets. The maid
sulks. I rekindle a waning argument with the telephone company . This excerpt is a good example of
Didion writing how the winds affect people in general, it tells about how a sense of unease or worry
settles upon the population. Also, as seen in the example above, Didion does not only manipulate the
feelings brought out in her essay by selecting what data or biased observations are allowed in her
work, but also by manipulating the way that her writing transitions in the

with others in the town. In the novel,To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch s
influence on his daughter Scout is made clear through the importance he places on education, the
admirable ways he practices law, and through his effective interactions with Maycomb residents. In

good meal. Atticus inviting the Cunninghams for dinner possibly made them feel welcomed.
Additionally, Scout is very polite to Mr.Cunningham at the lynch mob in front of the county jail. To
demonstrate Don t you remember me Mr.Cunningham? I m Jean Louise Finch...I go to school with

The Problem Of Computer Programming Education
Through the Educate to Innovate Initiative, the current administration has made the case that
investments in STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and math) are essential to
maintaining the status of international competitiveness. But since the start of the program in 2009, the
importance of computer programming education is still being misunderstood and inadequately
addressed. Though the administration has tried to get more technology into schools, it s failed to teach
kids what could really help them compete internationally which is coding. Computer programming is
the driving force behind all forms of computer technology. Without programmers, these machines
could be more innovative and capable than mankind could ever imagine, but if there is no one to
program, there is no way for computers to perform needed tasks.
Though technology has become such a key point in the national discussion on education, computer
literacy is still sometimes confused with computer science. While computer literacy refers to word
processing and knowledgeable use of the Internet, computer science refers to the study of algorithmic
processes, hardware and software designs, and ways to impact society with technological innovation.
A general computer science curriculum largely consists of critical thinking, problem solving, and logic
the skills that American students will need in order to compete for the best jobs, whether or not they
become programmers (James, 2013).

  • 2. Longitude Essay Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time is written by Dava Sobel. The book is called Longitude because it is about a clock maker who was able to determine longitude. Determining longitude was the superlative scientific question in the eighteenth century that Galileo and Newton were not able to resolve. The principal inspiration behind the invention completed in this book is that many sailors were lost at seas as a result of their ignorance regarding longitude. So, without the competence to determine longitude, many innocent lives were disintegrated at seas. England amp;#8217;s Parliament was desperate for an answer to ... H 2 was a heavy weight of 86 pounds, but fitted into a small box as John promised it would. H 2 was also bar shaped and included an implement to ensure a unchanging drive and a more agreeable temperature reimbursement device. Although its motion was adequately regular and exact for finding the longitude of a ship within the nearest limits proposed by the Parliament, H 2 was not good enough for Harrison. So, Harrison devoted nineteen years to build H 3. The H 3 was the leanest of the sea clocks and was small enough to meet the definition of amp;#8220;shipshape. ; H 3 contained bearings in the caged ball that smoothened the operation with moving parts. Unlike H 1 and H 2, H 3 ran on two large circular balances wheels linked by metal ribbons. In addition, it was controlled by a single spiral spring. Furthermore, Harrison introduced a bi metallic strip in the H 3. The bi metallic strip compensates immediately and automatically for any changes in temperature that could effect the clock amp;#8217;s going rate. But after the H 3 was completed Harrison realized that a small watch might be the greatest device to figure out the longitude. As a result, John Harrison completed H 4 in1759. It was very minute for a sea clock, and weighed only three pounds. It had two silver cases and a amp;#8220;genteel white ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Blue Mask by Lou Reed Lou Reed s, The Blue Mask Although the visionary singer, song writer, Lou Reed, gained his fame in the 70 s, he reached the highest peak of his career with the album The Blue Mask, in which he explored the elements of human flaws. With this album, he stripped down from his dramatic work in the 70 s and explored new techniques along with his small, tight knit band. The Blue Mask received excellent reviews from critics and consumers because it allowed listeners to have a personal connection with Reed and showed them a different side apart from the public persona. Overall, the achievements and praise were well deserved for the hard work he and his band put in. Lou Reed, a New York native, attended the University of Syracuse and studied poetry and journalism. He later became the lead singer for the band, Velvet Underground during the 60 s. He is commonly known today as the one who started the punk rock era and also brought a stormy dissonance to the foreground, helping to expand the vocabulary of the electric guitar (Rolling Stone Bio). He broke away from his partnership with Velvet Underground and headed for England in pursuit of a solo career. Over a decade later, he released the album, The Blue Mask. The Blue Mask was under the direction of RCA Records and was originally distributed on a 12 inch vinyl stereo gramophone record. RCA Records owned the phonographic copyrights, as well as regular copyrights. Lou Reed produced the entire album with the help of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

System Approach And Agile Approach Essay COMPARISON OF THE FORMAL AND AGILE APPROACHES TO SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT, UNIT 11 Sophie Pritchard CONTENTS Introduction 3 Different stages of a life cycle 4 The formal approach: 4 the waterfall approach: 4 The Agile approach: 7 Prototyping: 7 Conclusion 9 INTRODUCTION A system is created to solve problems, for example, work out someone s wages. The systems approach can be said to be an organised way of dealing and solving the problem. A life cycle in system analysis is a term used to describe a process for planning, creating, testing, and deploying an information system. The systems development life cycle concept applies to a range of hardware and software configurations, as a system can be composed of hardware only, software only, or a combination of both. General system development life cycles that exist include: o Waterfall stages, requirements, design, implementation, verification, maintenance. o Agile stages, define requirements, integrate test(X3), feedback, approved? yes=release to market, no= record incorporate changes, adjust track, next iteration (back to beginning). o Spiral plan, test, analyses, development of testing (back to the beginning until everything is complete and there are not problems found in testing.) Gene Expression Of Soybeans ( Glycine Max ) Gene Expression of Soybeans (Glycine max) in Response to Bacterial Inoculants, Rhizoboost, Defensor and Rhizobium under abiotic Stress (heat condition) in Glycine max Proposal by Noor Sairafi and Dr. Sue Hum Musser Western Illinois University, Department of Biology Abstract Several microorganisms have the ability to promote plant growth and produce compounds which are known to stimulate plant defenses by inducing systemic resistance (ISR) in attacked plants (1). Bacillus species are commonly used in formulating microbial fertilizers due to their rapid beneficial effects in colonizing plant root and establishing Rhizobia bacteria mutualism inside their root structure. In this paper research, I will observe this unique interaction by examining the gene expression of soybeans (Glycine max) and their response to bio inoculants under a heat stress. I will use four different treatments: control, Defensor, Rhizoboost, Defensor and Rhizobium, and Rhizoboost and Rhizobium. Once the infected seeds germinate, I will incubate soybean seeds at 25 oC and 37 oC for approximately 16 hours followed by grinding seeds for RNA purification. Gene expression data will be then obtained and collected via qPCR analysis followed by microarray analysis for more data confirmation. Additionally, a two way ANOVA and a Tukey s multiple comparison test will be used to determine the significance of the data. Executive compensation generally consists of a mix of four components: Annual Base Salary Annual Incentive or bonus plans tied to short term performance measures. Long Term Incentives consisting in a mix of restricted stocks, stocks options and other long term performance plans tied to shareholder return or financial performance. Benefits plans. As a rule of thumb, the base salary constitutes 30% of total compensation, the annual incentive another 20%, the benefits about 10% and long term incentives or the wealth creation portion of the compensation about 40%. Executives can trade for entirely legitimate reasons, such as to raise money to meet a tax bill or simply to diversify. But of course they must avoid trading on nonpublic information, and that can lead to sticky situations, since executives do possess just such information much of the time. Regulatory efforts to find a way around this conundrum and allow executives to trade, a Wall Street Journal analysis suggests, are so flawed they have left a confusing landscape that can both raise suspicions about trades that are innocent, and provide cover for others that are less so. Trading by specific insiders, such as employees, is commonly permitted as long as it does not rely on material information not in the public domain. However most jurisdictions require such trading be reported so that these can be monitored. In the United States and several other jurisdictions, trading conducted by corporate officers, key employees, directors, or significant shareholders must be reported to the regulator or publicly disclosed, usually within a few business days of the trade. 5. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Determining VO2max can be important for not only elite athletes in enhancing performance but also the general public in maintaining good health and well being. Consistent with preceding literature (Jones McConnell, 1999; Carter et al., 2000; Basset Boulay, 2000), both men and women showed a significant increase in estimated maximal oxygen uptake on the treadmill ergometer, with a mean estimated VO2max of 50.5±9.4 mL/Kg/min compared to the cycle ergometer averaging a VO2max of 45.5±9.8 mL/Kg/min. The commonly accepted reasoning to account for this difference is that the treadmill running engages a greater muscle mass (the swinging motion of the arms and the stabilization of the core muscles) compared to cycling which predominately uses leg muscles and therefore leads to a greater demand for oxygen supply to skeletal muscle tissue resulting in a greater amount of inspired air and a greater maximal oxygen uptake value (Jones McConnell, 1999; Carter et al., 2000). In addition to these findings, it was found that men had a significantly higher maximal oxygen uptake compared to women across both modes, with men recording a mean VO2max of 53.6±91 mL/Kg/min on the treadmill ergometer and 47.7±10.7 mL/Kg/min on the cycle ergometer compared to the average treadmill and cycle ergometer VO2max of 45.2±7.3 mL/Kg/min and 41.4±6.2 mL/Kg/min respectively. Within a short time span, they can spread from small area by overtaking large forest area. The seeds of the garlic mustard remain in the soil for five or more years. The plant identification phase is formed by the leaves being alternative, being triangular to heart shaped, or being scalloped edged and also giving off an odor of garlic when crushed. This odor can be used for distinguishing between garlic mustard from native plants such as evergreen violets, piggy back plant and fringecup plants as well. It will also help to distinguish non native plants such as the silver dollar plant. Garlic mustard has two growing seasons. The first growing season is in early March and then the second growing season occurs in April. The second growing season includes plants that have flower stalks that range from 12 to 48 inches tall. Sometimes, however these developmental stages arrive in countries at different times, some later than others. With this lack of development emerges fragile states which may endanger not only themselves and neighbouring states but, also international security, peace, and overall global economy. These unstable countries, riddled with poverty pose an increasing threat towards causing intensified conflicts. To counter these threats and conflicts in attempts to keep and restore peace, international humanitarian interventions are often used. This controversy, was propelling us further into the Civil War. The battle over slavery was only half of the problem. The other half, came in the form of political party disagreements. The democrats believed in giving more power to the states, and the federalists believed in more power to the federal government. Identifying The Unknown Bacteria From A Mixed Culture Identification of Enterobacter Aerogenes Annie Banh November 15, 2014 Jason Atkins Unknown #19 The purpose of this study is to identify an unknown bacterium from a mixed culture. We identified the unknown bacteria through different biochemical tests and identified the many metabolic capabilities of the bacteria. Studying and discovering unknown bacteria is very important in the health field as it may lead to new medicines and innovations for current, existing diseases as well as any upcoming diseases. The discovery of unknown bacteria is very useful in the pharmaceutical industry, as most of the products prepared are made based on these unknown organisms. The biochemical tests used to identify the unknown bacteria included: phenol red broth test (glucose, lactose, and sucrose), methyl red and Voges Proskauer test, citrate test, indole test, H2S production test, urea test and motility test. The PR broths are used to differentiate members of Enterobacteriaceae and to distinguish these members from other gram negative rods. The PR broths are useful in determining a bacterium s fermentation abilities. If the bacterium is able to utilize the carbohydrate, then the acid production from fermentation lowers pH, which in turn turns the broth yellow. However, if the bacterium is unable to utilize the carbohydrate, but does utilize the peptone, which produces the by product ammonia, the medium will have a rise in pH turning the broth pink. • 24. An Examination of the Factors of Algerian Foreign Policy It is commonly held that a compelling explanation of the foreign policy orientation of any country cannot be well understood without an examination of its determinants and guiding principles. A state s foreign policy is also conditional on both domestic and external factors, which may change from time to time, thus forcing it to review its foreign policy to ensure that it operates in the best possible conditions to achieve its objectives. An examination of any country s foreign policy must, if only by way of background, take into consideration the past, for history itself often determines the boundaries within which current politics evolve. In the case of Algeria, colonial history gave rise to many determinants which still exercise pertinent influences on Algerian foreign policy: factors whose origins lie in the past but which continue to impact contemporary policy. The roots of independent Algeria s revolutionary foreign policy are commonly attributed to the impact of the extremely revolutionary national ideology acquired as a result of the sufferings endured by the Algerians in their resistance to and struggle against the French occupation and to the experience acquired by the Algerian diplomacy during wartime, as well as to the indifference of Western powers, particularly the United States, towards Algeria s revolutionary war against the French (Stone 228 229). • 27. Types Of Transport Within A Cell There are many different types of transport within a cell that can end up being very complex. On the outside of the cell is the plasma membrane that protects it from the outside environment. The plasma membrane is very picky about what it allows through it. It wants to let in oxygen and nutrients, but keep out harmful bacteria. It also wants to keep in the proteins and nutrients that are already in the membrane. Because of this property, the plasma membrane is called a selectively permeable membrane and it has two basic transport processes. In passive transport processes it is the concentration differences that drives the movement. The two passive transports are diffusion and filtration. In active transport processes the cell provides energy in the form of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) to power the process. The two active transport processes are primary which is driven directly by ATP or secondary which is driven indirectly by ATP (Marieb P61). For the most part, molecules will diffuse passively through the plasma membrane if they are small enough, but they must be aided by a concentration gradient. A concentration gradient is when there is a difference in concentration of a substance from one area to another (Amerman P75). This property of the plasma membrane is critical to the cell. Without this property the cell would not be able to exchange the oxygen and nutrients it needs to with the extracellular fluid (the fluid located in the spaces between the cells). The ... Oppression Of Women In Pakistan The portrayal of women in the Middle East, specifically in Pakistan, women face discrimination on a regular basis and struggle to obtain equal rights in comparison to men in Pakistan. Some of the reasons women are oppressed in Pakistan because of the dominance and control men have over women. Since the government doesn t utilize the opportunity to protect women and uses religious defenses as an excuse to treat women poorly, women continue to be treated like second class citizens. Oppression of Women in Pakistan began after independence in 1947 and continues to negatively impact women today. Women face inequality in being protected by the government, unequal education, and political representation. The British controlled India and began to exploit Indians for their use of raw materials. Britain established power by controlling trade and created the East India Company. Britain Westernized India and influenced Muslims and Hindus to collaborate. Conflicts arose when the majority, Hindus, had more political power and influence over Muslims. Upon trying to gain more political power the Muslim League was established and met on December 1906 to discuss ways to improve and support political representation of Muslims(Ahmed 110). A Muslim activist, Jinnah, used his power in Congress to encourage other Muslims to establish more representation in government. Religious conflicts and tension became prominent when the Indian National Congress began to favor Hindu movements and Hindu nationalism spread across India. During the 1920 s after the Muslim League tried to band with congress to challenge Britain control, Britain favored Hindu culture and dismissing the needs of Muslims(Admed 110). Disregarding Muslim needs provoked fear of oppression insinuating Muslims to rebel. Acts of rebellion occurred until a meeting was established to form a political compromise between peace activist, Gandhi, and the Muslim League to achieve more equal opportunities for Muslims. Essay on The Power of the Martian Chronicles The Power of the Martian Chronicles The Martian Chronicles is a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury These stories all relate to the idea of humans visiting mars, but are only connected by the loosest of threads. At times, it can appear as if Bradbury was grasping mercilessly, searching for something to draw together the random conglomeration of human situations his mind had created individually. The entity that embraced all these stories and melded them from half hour kiddy show format stories into a great two hour special feature novel was the forth planet from the sun, earth s neighbor and Bradbury s stage for The Martian Chronicles, mars. The typical encyclopedia entry on science fiction describes the genre as a form of fantastic literature that involves scientific/pseudo scientific advances that might be oversimplifying it, however. The Martian Chronicles, along with much of Ray Bradbury s work, has been criticized many times in relation to its place in the science fiction community. The Martian Chronicles made it clear that Bradbury was not interested in space travel, prognosis, or time travel (Clute 201) but merely used these devices to support his stories of people s lives and emotions. Bradbury used science fiction not as a genre, but as a literary device. The messages of The Martian Chronicles speak about a myriad of ideas, not all having to do with science fiction related topics. Throughout the novel, Bradbury s trepidation about the possibility of atomic war is prominent, though offstage (atomic war breaks out on earth late in the stories, but it s only ... • 42. Discuss The Impact Of Divorce On Children According to Virginia Rutter, there has been an ongoing argument of whether or not divorce is a good thing (Rutter 159). An argument is made that the decline of the impact of divorce on children is due to the number of children involved, decreasing from 1.34 children to less than one child (Rutter 159). However, the statement of the impact of divorce being lessened due to less children being caught in the middle appears to be intellectually disingenuous. Regardless of their being less children, the children that are involved from the divorce will still be impacted greatly. Nevertheless, Rutter is correct in saying that there are some sets of circumstances where divorce is the better option. When my father divorced my mother, they decided that ... • 46. What Are The Negative Effects Of The Santa Ana By Joan Didion In her essay, Didion uses a very ominous and foreboding tone to convey the topic of the Santa Ana winds. From the very beginning of the essay, the reader is given a feeling that these Santa Ana winds possess a type of evil in them that seem to affect people for the worse. The reader is never allowed to look past the negative effects of the Santa Ana winds. I will explain how Joan Didion does this in the following examples. In order to give a greater sense of authenticity and awe, Didion utilizes a wide range of descriptive phrases. For example, There is something uneasy in the L.A. air this afternoon, some unnatural stillness, some tension. What it means is that tonight a Santa Ana will begin to blow, a hot wind from the northeast whining down through the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes, blowing up sandstorms out along Route 66, drying the hills and the nerves to the flash point. This opening group of sentences clearly describe the Santa Ana winds and give them a corporeal form. These sentences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 48. The Problem Of Computer Programming Education Through the Educate to Innovate Initiative, the current administration has made the case that investments in STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and math) are essential to maintaining the status of international competitiveness. But since the start of the program in 2009, the importance of computer programming education is still being misunderstood and inadequately addressed. Though the administration has tried to get more technology into schools, it s failed to teach kids what could really help them compete internationally which is coding. Computer programming is the driving force behind all forms of computer technology. Without programmers, these machines could be more innovative and capable than mankind could ever imagine, but if there is no one to program, there is no way for computers to perform needed tasks. Though technology has become such a key point in the national discussion on education, computer literacy is still sometimes confused with computer science. While computer literacy refers to word processing and knowledgeable use of the Internet, computer science refers to the study of algorithmic processes, hardware and software designs, and ways to impact society with technological innovation. A general computer science curriculum largely consists of critical thinking, problem solving, and logic the skills that American students will need in order to compete for the best jobs, whether or not they become programmers (James, 2013).
