I have recently completed Black Boy by Richard Wright, and believe it would be a
great addition to the tenth grade curriculum. Black Boy is an autobiography about
the author Richard Wright s life. It begins with four year old Richard setting his
house on fire, which instantly draws in the reader. From there Richard leads the
reader through his life of poverty and loneliness. We experience his losses as well
as his gains in the world. Most importantly, throughout the book, we see a different
side of all races than we normally see in the books written by the dead white men.
Like the rhymes Richard created with the neighborhood kids to taunt the jews. We
black children seven, eight, and nine years of age used to run to the Jew s stores

royal family in Memphis and then transitioning into the move to Amarna. The story

In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, it shows the things that Elie went through in the
concentration camp. Elie uses dark imagery to show how physically miserable it
was for them. Also, we are able to see his perspective on how they were treated to the
point all they felt was pain, and mostly what he went through mentally and physically.
In Night, the most crucial external conflict revolves around the Nazi party which is
shown through the perspective of Elie Wieseland his use of dark imagery. The way it
impacted the life of Elie because the Nazi party caused him more personal
problems like questioning if his father is worth being with, his relationship with
God, if he should still live, and in the end the way he saw himself was different.
One way the conflict develops is by Wiesel s use of dark imagery. In the text it
