3. RESEARCH
My research taught me a lot about the genre and
conventions of the genre I was going to do. It taught me
that I needed to include lots of filters, have a dark colour
pallet, show the band performing and have a dark story
shown throughout, all of these techniques where used in my
final music video and I would not have had a lot of these
without doing research and finding out I needed them. A
strength of my research is how it is short and to the point, it
was easy to look at it often while filming and editing as it is
bullet pointed instead of being multiple pages of useless
information, this helped in many ways as I sped up things
and I knew exactly what I wanted at every stage. The only
issue I had with my research is that I thought for sure I was
either going to do a Korn song or a Deftones song, therefor
I only did research into these bands. A ended up picking a
song by avenged sevenfold which I hadn't done research on,
although the other research is completely viable as they are
from the same genre it would have helped to have had
research on the band I was doings music videos.
4. My research also helped me choose my setting, outfits,
props and narrative. While analyzing videos I noticed that
the outfits worn by both bands are usually very dark
street clothes, no big brands, this is most prominent in
the Deftones videos which I was basing mine off more
than Korn, their style is still street but a lot brighter,
although they still have some darker outfits. This
research led me to the decision of just wearing all black
casual clothes and getting the others in my video to do
the same.
One disadvantage of my research is that I wrote down
how neither band used a greed screen, this made me not
use one in my final video, however I recently saw some
avenged sevenfold music videos and realized that they
do occasionally use green screens, meaning I could have
used them, this would have helped with the clips of my
band playing as they are all performing in a music room
which could have been something different if I put a
green screen behind them.
I crated a list of conventions I planned to use
in my video.
I used every convention on the list in my video
which proved to me that my research was
useful as everything I learned was used
5. PLANNING
My planning helped me out throughout the production in
many ways, starting with my storyboard, I had 14 boxes
in the story board with a terribly drawn picture in each
(I’m not good at art but I could understand what I meant
by looking at them) each slide had some text under and
all together the story board showed me exactly what I
needed to film and how to do it. This was all fine until I
couldn't use my first location where the story board was
made for, this was a setback as I didn't have a story
board for my backup location but I did have an idea of
how I could still copy my original play just using different
scenery. In the end my final video looked nothing like the
storyboard but the story portrayed in it stayed exactly
the same.
My second most useful piece of planning was my shot
list I looked at this while filming all of my narrative and
tried to look at it while filming the band, it was very
useful but I ended up filming more of some shots and
not filming others I planned on doing, I don’t know if my
6. I made a mind map next listing locations, plot, clothes,
props, facilities and equipment. This let me easily write
down all of my ideas and decide which would be best to
use. There where no disadvantages to the mind map as it
helped every other part of my planning.
My location research was what held me back the most,
from previous knowledge I knew there was a scrap yard
near my house which was very open and had some
incredible things, for example there was a broken plane
there once, this was my first and main location I planned
on using, there was no images on the crap yard online and
I could find much info so I had to physically get there, a
week before filming when all of my preproduction was
complete I got a lift down to the scrap yard to make sure it
was how it used to be. The issue is that the scrap yard now
was completely different and had no was to enter, there
was a fence and a gate and no public where allowed in any
more, we spoke to the owners and they confirmed this
making my main plan no longer doable. This meant I had
to use my second location, the graveyard at the top of my
street, my research for this area was a lot easier and I
found out I basically had full access, and that no one had
been buried there for quite some time. Making my
research for that very useful, even though the majority of
7. The last research I did was more practical, I was researching
editing and camera techniques to use in my final video. I
started by filming a friend outside, trying to do some shots
in and out of focus, tracking shots and slow motion. The
recording went well and gave me more experience with using
the camera. After I had enough I went back to the mac and
uploaded my files, I layed them out and tried a variety of
editing techniques on them, some of these came out very
well for example I had a shot of some leaves that starts out
of focus then goes into focus. I used this exact technique in
my final music video, where I did a shot from over a
characters shoulder which started out of focus and then
went into focus.
This first editing was useful
in my planning as I learned
a few things which I added
to my list of things to film,
without doing this I wouldn’t
have known i could.
However it was apparent to
me that my clips where not
that great and it was quite
hard to work with them, so I
decided to get some non
copywrite clips off the
internet and practice some
8. I got some clips and started to watch some youtube
tutorials on different ways to edit them. The first was a
VHS effect, I used this over a clip of the ocean
The affect consisted of
duplicating the video 3 times,
slightly moving one to the right,
one to the left, and then
changing the colors on them so
one is 100% red, one 100% green
and one 100% blue, this creates
the affect above, I added a date
and then after that I added a line
that moves down the screen like
old VHS screen tare, this can be
9. The next video I made consisted of 2 videos I found online,
I was testing transitions on this clip, as well as some
effects
I found editing these clips a lot easier as they
where already very colorful, one of the clips had
2 people and the other clip only had 1, this
difference made them very fun to cut between, I
could use transitions that made it look like the 2
would merge together/one person would split
into 2 etc. This is the first time I had used
transitions and I learned which ones I liked best
and planned on using in my final video, I added
these to my editing list.
Another thing I tested out on this clip was
adding music, I learned how to get music off
youtube and make It an mp3 file, I then put it
over the clip and started trying to sync parts of
the song to what was happening in the video,
for example there is a second of silence before
the first chorus, I times this up with a moment
in the video where nothing happens then when
the chorus kicks in I used a slide transition
which moved the whole screen, this is the most
noticeable transition and I put it over the most
noticeable part of the song, all of these
techniques proved helpful in my final video and
10. TIME MANAGEMENT
My time management was very good, I stuck to my
schedule I made and finished my final product in time.
Before filming I had props I needed to get and make so I
was very eficient in doing that and had everything ready
a week early. I even looked at a tutorial to make fake
blood during my planning and got the ingredients to
make it ready for the day.
On the day I had one issue, I planned on making the
video near the end of the day so it would get darker
throughout, the issue was that when we where done
filming the story it was extremely dark and impossible to
film the band playing, luckily I had a backup plan in case
this happened which we ended up doing and it turned
out fine. To improve on this I need to monitor things I
normally wouldn't, in this case I should have recorded
what time it was getting dark a few days before.
11. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERABoth songs have ties to death, therefor
making the tombstones significant, in
both of these videos they are used to
make a dramatic mise en scene
Both videos in black and
white, often used in the
genre and especially dark
songs
My video is not a silhouette
like Marilyn Manson’s
video
Male protagonist
Both shot
at night
My video has
a lot more
visible
background
12. Both filmed in an
average room,
quite small
My video is in black and
white while the deftones
video is in color both shot from the
front showing
primarily the singer,
guitarist and
drummer
Dark clothing
Primarily dark room
with light only coming
from windows in the
back
My video did not have as many
props, for example amplifiers,
more band members, people
in the back listening
My video shows less of
the room and less of
my, only from the knee
up, whereas in their
video you can see all of
the singer, more of the
13. Both videos have
a heavy color
filter over them
Both shot outside, mine
is in a graveyard, the
slipknot one is in some
bushes outside a house
Both people have
some form of
mask on
weapons
Mine is from a side profile
showing him coming in
from the right
Slipknots shows Corey coming
towards the camera head on
Mine is
black
and
white
while
slipknots
is blue
There is a lot more
background in
mine, slipknots is
very baren
14. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
My editing across the video is very drastic, there are lots of different
effects and techniques, which make it similar to a slipknot video, I based
my editing off theres and decided I would do it similar but a lot more
toned down. I used some similar effects to what they use like playing
around with the light curves, saturation, grain etc.
I also sped up and slowed down certain clips depending on the speed of
the song, another thing I learned from their videos.
15. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I personally like the look of my video it is similar to what I imagined in my
head and I feel it is semi enjoyable to watch, I definitely gave myself a
challenge by picking an almost 5 minute long song, as it became a
struggle to make the whole thing entertaining to watch and not get boring.
I think I did this well by adding a lot of filters and effects and having a
slightly gripping story. I think the story is clear throughout but that may be
because I already know it, I would have to make somebody else watch and
tell me if they understood, but it has a start a middle a climax and then an
end so there isn't anything too confusing.
I especially like the darkness of the video as it works with the horror
element of my video and the cemetery looks good in the black and white.
To improve my video I could have filmed the same thing again from a ot of
angles and cut between them fast, the problem with this was the shots
from other angles where all slightly different as we only had one camera so
in one shot I might be stood in one place and then while recording from
the next angle I may be slightly off.
if I had money for a video I would like to have included things like flairs,
smoke etc. I also wanted to have the band playing in the grave yard but I
could not find anyone with an instruments I could use, this is a problem
16. AUDIENCE APPEAL
My target audience for this video is fans of the band avenged sevenfold,
other songs and videos they have made are usually dark, violent and
include a performance, I would say I have done this, just not to the
standard that they would.
The performance in a real music video does look a lot better but this is
something I could not accomplish with my resources, heavy metal music
videos are usually very expensive to make and feature the band playing
somewhere especially made for the performance which is the opposite
of what I had, however it did still look decent for a live performance as
both of the instruments looked like they where actually being played
and the lip sync was pretty well synced up.
17. The story in my music video is quite typical of a heavy metal music
video, it has violence, a horror element and the lyrics of the song fit
the story shown.
The filters I used are very common in heavy metal videos aswell, I
used a black and white filter over most of the footage, to spice it up I
also made it so the filter goes on and off on every heavy guitar part of
the song. To better explain that throughout the song the main riff has
a part where 2 notes are played then a second later the same 2 notes
are played, this stands out in the song and forms a recurring beat. On
the first set of 2 notes I changed the color back to color, then on the
second 2 I would put it back to black and white, this was to try and
add to the horror element showing it is real by showing some color
periodically. Weird affects like this would appeal to my target audience
as the story of the song is about a man going insane and killing
people, the horror element of that shown in my song is that the killer
is following my min character and slowly catching up to him and
becoming more real and intense as it goes, anyone who knows the
song will know how it ends and is waiting for them to finally be killed
19. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
The lip syncing was very on point as every word lip synced felt like
the lyrics themselves were being sung there.
The visual style give a clear picture of tone with the black and white
and give it a sense of uniqueness among other songs in the genre.
Every cut was well done happening when they needed to.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
An improvement I could say is making sure the actors have the same
energy as the instrument that were being played in the song as the
drummer I noticed quite a lot didn't really have the same kind of
energy that was being heard from the song as each drum note is hard
and booming but in the footage the actor just tapping the drums
breaking the sense of immersion.
also clearing some of the visualised shots as it can be very distracting
some time when a shot has to much contrast to the point where it is
hard to see the faces of people which to some can seem very
distracting.
20. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
I really like the lip syncing it looked really real. The effects
felt like they fit the song really well. The location that the
shots of the person limping were really well thought out and
were really well lit. I thought the whole theme of the video
really fit well with the song. Things were cut to the beat
really well.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
There could have been slightly less effects because it was
sometimes hard to see. The story line could have been
slightly easier to follow. There was a bit of laughing which
sometimes made it less real.
21. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
Many visual effects suited the video and song very well
Cutting between the band and the graveyard was a good choice as to
not drag out the story near the graveyard
The distancing with the shots was done very well as it made the
masked man much more intimidating.
Very strong finale visually. It was both shot very well and the effects
matched and looked great
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
While most visual effects were good, sometimes the effect was too
strong, for example when the contrast is changed drastically it is not
visually appealing(3:15 in the video).
Some shots also had too much blur as you could not see what was
happening for short periods of time.
22. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
Everything apart from the people saying too many filters
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I added to many filters on purpose but it didn't come
across the way I wanted it to sadly
