- The target audience for the movie trailer is primarily male, aged 16-20, from a middle-class background.
- Elements like a relatable main character who is also a male teenager, real-world problems, and some action-crime elements would appeal to this audience.
- An optimal trailer length is around 2 minutes to hook viewers while not losing their attention. Including a "good hook" is important.
- Additional promotional elements like a social media campaign and poster would be effective ways to advertise to this young, digital-native audience.

pulp fiction
Pulp fiction is a drama/crime movie focussed on 3 main characters and almost short stories about all of
them. The movie is very different to most crime movies as it isn’t in order and there is no clear ending, this
is typical of a Tarantino movie and also what makes it so good. There is 3 separate narratives throughout
the movie, a robbery conducted by Vincent and Jules, who steal a briefcase, the story unfolds as they
accidentally shoot one someone in the back of their car while driving away from the crime scene then have
to deal with that issue. After all of this they go to a diner for some food only for it to be robbed. This
narrative is broken up and spread out across the whole movie. For example the very start shows 2 people
eating in a diner and beginning to rob it, this is only revisited at the very end but from the perspective of
Jules and Vincent eating in that restaurant as it gets robbed. This is a very interesting way to present a film
and makes it very enjoyable and different to watch. I will try and use some of these skills in my own movie
and have a timeline that is all jumbled up but still manages to work. The second narrative follows a boxer
who is paid off to lose a match, instead of this he ends up winning the match and killing his opponent in the
ring. The rest of his story is him trying to get out of town before the people who paid him to lose kill him.
Later in his story the path of him and Jules are crossed when Jules I hired to wait in Butchs house (the boxer)
and wait for him. The way the narratives are crossed over and join each other is done very well and what
was originally perceived to just be a movie about 2 narratives turns into 1. there are some very distinct
colour schemes throughout the movie and most scenes are filmed at night. The colour schemes help portray
that they are criminals and most of the crime scenes are a lot darker than scenes that are just about normal
life, for example Jules takes a girl out to each, the whole scene is bright and colourful which contrasts the
dark.

the theory of everything
The theory of everything is a biopic drama based on the life of Stephen Hawking a
university student who is diagnosed with motor neurones disease, he is given 2 years to
live and the movie follows his life after this and the slow decline of his health to the point
where he can no longer walk or talk. The locations and outfits of the movie all show the
era it was set and help get across that he was from an upper class family. Everything is
very posh and fancy, basically what you would expect to see from an upper class
university student. The language in the movies also supports this using words associated
with being posh and no use of curse words etc. props are one of the biggest things in this
movie as they show the fast decline of his health, at the beginning he is nocking cups
over, then his walks starts to get worse to wear he needs a walking stick, then 2 walking
sticks, then a wheelchair, finally ending with him in a wheel chair with a device that lets
him choose words on a screen so that an automated voice will read them out. The use of
props alone shows the timeline and how far into his life he is, and at the very end of the
movie there is a short rewind where it slowly goes back in time all the way to the start
where he is walking fine without the props and good acting this movie wouldn’t be
nearly as emotional to watch and would lose most of what made it an amazing movie.

a quiet place
A quiet place is a drama/horror/thriller movie about sound, or more importantly lack
of sound. It follows a family living in a post apocalyptic future where creatures with
extreme hearing rule the earth roaming around and attacking anything that makes a
noise. The family live in a small farm in the middle of nowhere living of the produce
they make. Obviously one thing leads to another and they have to try and survive
attacks by these creatures. Since the creatures are blind the whole movie is about
sound and most of the movie is almost silent with the only talking being in some very
rare parts where the father takes a child to a waterfall where the water is so loud you
can talk freely. The movie has a lot of suspense in it building up for quite a while
before anything happens. For example one scene shows a nail sticking out of some
wooden stairs. This nail is constantly in your mind, will someone step on it etc, until
someone does and they scream which them alerts the creatures. This suspense which
leads into more suspense makes the movie amazing yet uncomfortable to sit through.

I Daniel Blake
I Daniel Blake is about a 59 year old carpenter who suffers a heart attack and is told by his doctor not
to work, the uk benefits system however says he can work which leads to financial problems. The
movie is very realistic and talks about real world problems with the benefit system, how lower class
people are treated in society and crime. The movie was recorded and edited very lightly making it
seem as though you are watching a documentary following a real man and his struggles, which makes
it more personal. The issues that are explored in the movie are done very well, there is a scene where
a single mother is having to starve herself in order to get her kids food, and steal sanitary products
because she cannot afford them, this has been an issue women have had for a long time, why do
people have to pay for these products and this movie shows how horrible it can be when you can
afford necessities. Obviously the main issue is the benefits system and how Daniel is expected to work
even when it could kill him, and since he is old he has to apply for job seekers and spend time online
searching for jobs which he cannot do as he would never use the internet normally. There is a lot of
focus on how little the people who are supposed to be their to help do not care and I hope to get
across the issues I want to in my trailer as well as it is done in I Daniel Blake.

8. Audience research
My first question was just a general
question about the gender of the person. I
asked this as I wanted to know what my
primary audience is. This helps as I sent it
around to an even number of men and
women and said only to do it if they are a
fan of drama movies, therefore letting me
know how many men and women are
interested in drama movies and helping me
find my target audience, so far I have had a
majority male as 5 people have said they
are male and 3 have said female (both of
the people who put other both typed out
male, I don’t know why probably to be
awkward but either way they are male)
this would lead me to believe that drama
movies are more popular with the male
audience. I know this isn’t full proof
evidence as I only asked around 10 people
but on a smaller scale this tells me my
audience is primarily male
My product will appeal to a male audience
as it follows a male protagonist , this will tie
into a later question I asked about if people
would want a relatable main character. It
will also be following the daily life of this
boy which other males will probably find
more entertaining.
9. Audience research
My next question was ti find out what
the majority age would be for my trailer,
I also thought it would be a good idea to
see the opinions of some older and
younger people and see if there are
anomalies in my results later on possibly
due to the variety of people answering.
For example I would expect older
people to want poster advertisements
rather than social media
advertisements, so with this knowledge
I expect a majority of people to want
one thing and a rare few to want
another thing. The majority of people
who took the questionnaire are aged 16
to 20 which is my target audience which
means the results I get will be a lot
more useful to me as so far I know the
answers are by male 16 to 20 year olds
which is exactly who my trailer is for.
On top of this, my main character in the trailer will
be a male who is 18, making the character
relatable.
10. Audience research
My next question was on social class, this
may seem unnecessary but to me it was
very useful. While creating my plot I was
torn between the idea of a main character
who was coming from a poor family, or a
main character coming from a very well off
family whose parents have great jobs and
expect too much of the main character.
Since I want my character to be relatable I
decided it would be useful to see the social
class of my audience. My results show that
there is a primarily middle class audience,
this would lead me to believe that having a
middle class main character in my movie
will be more relatable to the people
watching as my target audience is middle
class. There are a few anomalies in this
graph which I think can be put down to
people not taking the question seriously
which is understandable because it is quite
personal, even so I managed to get the info
i needed and can now use this in my final
trailer.
11. Audience research
This question was my most
important one to me. I needed to
find out what people look for in a
trailer so I gathered a list of the most
nescesary traits of a good trailer and
made thyem select which one they
viewed as most important. 63.64%
of people answered with a good
hook. This is interesting to me as I
would have sided more with it
shows the basic plot, however not a
single person said that. I will use this
information wisely as it is my
strongest answer so far and this is
the main answer that matters with
the success of the trailer, if people
want a good hook then I should
deliver. The only issue with this is
how I get across a good hook when
my movie will be fairly tame with no
Violence or horror etc, it is a biopic drama about
someone's life. This will be a challenge but I will
figure something out.
12. Audience research
This question was to see what kind of
movies people like. I wanted to know if
there was a certain style or subgenre that
really stood out to people and my results
show that people are interested in pulp
fiction and forest gump. Both movies I am a
big fan of. This shows me that people like a
lot of talking and good story with a little
action in them. This is something I will try
and do in my trailer as I planned on using
some things from these movies, for
example a focus on characters talking,
exciting story etc. however I wasn’t going to
include and action, but from what my
research shows the movies that don’t
include much action aren’t as popular. I will
try learn from this and spice up my
narrative a bit more including some action
and just making it a bit more suspenseful, a
bit larger than life. This could help me as
currently my plot may be too boring and
Adding some more surreal plot could be the
difference that makes my movie interesting
and gives it a good hook which the people
wanted.
13. Audience researchMy next question was fairly
simple and I just wanted to know
what people thought was the
optimal time for a trailer, my
results show that people think
around 2 minutes is optimal for a
trailer, it is short enough that
people will not lose attention but
long enough to get across a good
story and hook. I will probably
aim to make my trailer 2 minutes
long as that is what people enjoy
for a trailer length. However 27%
of people also say they like a
teaser trailer. This is good
information and I am now
considering making a teaser
trailer as well as a trailer. Maybe
a 10 to 20 second trailer showing
the name of the trailer maybe
with some speech over it.
14. Audience research
My next question was to see how I could make
my movie more interesting, while looking
through a list of the most popular drama movies
I realised every one had one or more subgenres,
this got me thinking that I currently only had
one subgenre which was biopic. On top of this
my research showed that people didn’t even
like biopic movies, so I came to the conclusion I
need to add another subgenre, the obvious
answer would be to go with action as 72% of
people said this is their preferred subgenre.
However action wouldn’t work as well as I want
it to with my current plot, so I think I will go
with a crime action hybrid. Since my plot is
already about a boy on his own at a young age,
I feel like turning to crime isn’t that crazy of a
story arc and could work quite well, especially
adding something larger than life to the story
and also tying in some action associated with a
life of crime.
I will still stick with my main plot where he
ends up making it big in the music industry
but I think adding some crime in his early
days alone would help the story and please
viewers.
15. Audience researchI was struggling to decide weather I
wanted to discuss real world
problems in my movie, specifically
children raised by bad parents,
mental illness and possible drug
addiction problems. I think these
issues aren’t discussed as much as
they should be and putting them into
a movie would be pleasing to me.
However it would be hard to show
these things in just a trailer… I
decided to see what my viewers
would say about this and 7 people
said they would want to see a movie
that discusses real world problems
while only 1 person did not want to
see this. Since such a large amount of
people would like this I feel it is
necessary to try and include this in my
trailer somehow
16. Audience researchMy next question was to help me decide
on what other pieces of media I could
include in my fmp. Obviously a movie
trailer is not the only piece of
advertisement a movie has when it is
being advertised so I decided to see what
my audience would prefer to see as well
as my trailer. 50% of people said they
would prefer a social media
advertisement, I expected this amount of
people wanting social media as my target
audience is teenagers. Most people in
their teens consume a large amount of
social media daily. This is something I can
do fairly easily and can be spread around
quickly. Which makes it an easy thing to
add on to my fmp work. However this is
not enough for me so I will also make a
poster as I think posters are the best way
to show your movie off.
17. Audience research
My final question was, would you
prefer a main character that you can
relate to. This question was very
important to me as so far I have been
trying to make a main character that
can relate to the majority of peoples
answers, e.g. class, age, gender, and
it would be very bad if people did
not want a main character they can
relate to. However 91% of people
said they would prefer a main
character they can relate to which is
brilliant news for me. Obviously I will
try and do this when I create my
trailer and it doesn’t hurt that I
personally am a male teenager. I wish
I had added a section asking why
people want a character they can
relate to just to give me some more
insight into my audiences minds
About how a relatable character is better. But
this is something I will have to learn from and do
next time.
