Dr. Chris Willmott developed a program called Careers After Biological Sciences (CABS) at the University of Leicester to improve careers advice for biology students. CABS involves inviting alumni from various career paths to speak about their careers and how they got there. Speakers are asked to discuss their current job, career path, and tips for students considering their field. Recordings and materials from the speakers are archived online for students. Evaluation found the approach helped increase students' career awareness and the diversity of careers they considered.
iTunes U - review of Australian Unis
iTunes U is a platform within iTunes for universities to share educational content. It allows universities to structure content on their own "sites" and share public or private content. Some Australian universities' approaches to iTunes U include highlighting top downloads, featured content, links to university pages, and sample lectures. For UTS's approach, potential content sources include existing UTSpeaks events, campus life videos, and podcasts, as well as generating new content by enhancing audio/video facilities, training staff, and engaging students.
China's interest in open education, OER, MOOCs, and big data

Learning how to learn, with Software Carpentry
Software Carpentry aims to help researchers be more productive by teaching basic computing skills through online resources and workshops. The workshops, or bootcamps, typically cover topics like the Unix shell, Python, version control, testing and databases in a hands-on live coding format. Evaluations show the bootcamps are well received and increase participants' computational skills, though it can be difficult for researchers to apply the lessons directly to their own work. Open questions remain around how to keep bootcamps impactful if made mandatory and how to definitively measure their long-term effects on research productivity and code sharing.

Teaching for learning 2013 Session 2
The first University of Divinity Teaching for Learning Day, held 6 November 2013 in Melbourne focussed on Good Practice in Higher/Theological Education.
This second session addressed principles of Good Practice, derived from Chickering, Gamson and Ehrmann, and asked how these applied to the University's Colleges, especially as more Colleges embrace online support or delivery for their units and courses. Forums, Skype and Copyright were also addressed.
Activists archiving digital content created through OWS - AMIA - 2012
This document summarizes the efforts of the Occupy Wall Street Archives Working Group to archive digital media from the Occupy Wall Street movement. Open Education Practices at Hokkaido University
In the Hokkaido region, Japan’s second largest island, 7 public universities are pursing such an approach, having recently concluded an agreement to cooperatively develop and deliver components of liberal arts education in a way that will leverage local characters and specializations and will integrate a credit transferring system across the consortium. As part this effort, Hokkaido University, as a leading institution in the consortium, has launched a new organization called Center for Open Education as a central part of the cooperative program. In this context, Center for Open Education simultaneously make use of OER in blended and hybrid settings to improve student engagement and learning outcomes while also contributing back to the commons MOOC and the best of consortium-developed materials. From spring semester in 2014, the consortium starts credit-bearing courses using OER on flipped classroom among institutions. In this July, Hokkaido University opens MOOC on edX reusing consortium-developed materials with English translation.

Video Accessibility: Penn State Demonstrates Its Automated Captioning Solution

Captions are text that is time-sychronized with the media. They convey all spoken content as well as relevant sound effects. Captions originated in the early 1980s from an FCC mandate for broadcast TV.
The 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act requires all Internet programming that previously aired on television with captions to have captions online, as well.
The values of captioning include:
- Accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing
- Accessibility for ESL viewers
- Flexibility to view anywhere, such as noisy environments or offices
- Search
- Reusability
- Navigation, better UX
- SEO/discoverability
- Used as source for translation
Penn State has 55 online courses. They have an increasing need for accommodation in online education. Here is Penn's accommodation process:
1. Student discloses request of accommodation to ODS office
2. If qualified, student receives accommodation letter from ODS
3. Student submits letter to instructor including types of accommodation needed
4. Instructor informs the learning designer of accommodation needed
5. Learning designer coordinates effort to implement accommodation

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies.
