Today’s learners are often referred to as “digital natives” because of the ease with which they interact with digital media and tools. Yet most of them are not digitally “literate” and do not have the necessary critical thinking, visual and information literacy skills necessary to prepare them for today’s media rich environment. This presentation will focus on innovative uses of digital media in different courses at AUC. Special attention will be given to the multimedia essay, in which image and video annotations are incorporated into a “critical essay” providing the necessary evidence to support an argument. We use “Mediathread”, an innovative open source platform developed by Columbia University which allows the “exploration, analysis, and organization of web-based multimedia” while offering the collaborative features of social media. Other collaborative tools that foster media literacy skills will be discussed in the context of a multi-disciplinary team taught course on “Creative Thinking”. These include blogs, “Tumblr” and “Edcanvas”, an innovative sharing platform. The institutional support needed for faculty to develop, implement and assess such learning activities will also be addressed.

We introduce the VideoLecturesMashup, which presents re-mixes of learning materials from the VideoLectures.NET portal based on shared topics across different lectures.
Learners need more efficient access to teaching on specific topics which could be part of a larger lecture (focused on a different topic) and occur across lectures from different collections in distinct domains. Current e-learning video portals can not address this need, either to quickly dip into a shorter part focused on a specific topic of a longer lecture or to explore what is taught about a certain topic easily across collections. Through application of media technologies promoted by the MediaMixer project – semantic annotation and media fragment URIs – we have implemented a first demo of VideoLecturesMashup.

The presenter will showcase three technology tools and strategies for building community, increasing active participation, supporting social interaction, facilitating collaborative activities, and fostering engagement among students. The presenter will also demonstrate a simplified process for creating your own instructional videos by using free tools such as Screencast-O-Matic and YouTube. VoiceThread allows for asynchronous discussions about media through text, audio and video comments. Popular social media like Facebook extends community and engagement. The techniques modeled and examples shared are applicable to face-to-face, online, or hybrid courses. Tips and tricks for success with these technologies will be shared, and helpful resources for getting started and troubleshooting will be provided. Please bring your iPad or laptop to be able to fully participate in this session.

Designing for Diversity: Creating Learning Experiences that Can Travel the Globe
This highly interactive workshop will introduce and explore pedagogical, technical and policy-based strategies to design, create and deliver OER/OCW learning experiences that can be used by the broadest range of learners globally. Workshop participants will be exposed to a variety of tools while collaboratively creating educational resources that are amenable to translation across cultures, languages, formats, technical platforms, learning approaches, modes of interaction and sensory modalities.
The one consistent and predictable quality of learners is that they are diverse. Among the many differences, they differ in their expectations, language, learning approaches, priorities, culture, background knowledge, age, abilities, motivations, literacy, habits, learning context, available technology and skills. If the goal is to achieve the largest impact and support learners in reaching their optimum then the most important design criteria is to design OCW/OER for diversity.
There are tools, toolkits and guidelines available to support the creation of engaging, flexible and translatable learning experiences. There are also international research and innovation communities that support the advancement of inclusive design. Participants will be familiarized with both so that strategies introduced during the workshop can be further developed and updated after the workshop.
The workshop will address the full OER/OCW delivery chain from learning experience design, authoring, delivery, review, revision and reuse. Participants will explore a variety of content types including video, simulations, interactive forms, animations, games, electronic textbooks, math/science notation, and collaborative applications. Authoring tools and toolkits explored will range from office applications and OER authoring portals to application development environments. A variety of browsers and delivery platforms on desktops and mobile devices will be covered.
The workshop is intended for educators, policy makers, administrators, OER/OCW developers and technical support staff interested in reaching the broadest range of learners globally.
