Livestreamed Video and more

              .
Occupy Wall Street: The first 5 months
September 17, 2011 – The first day of the OWS gathering in
Zuccotti Park. An estimated 1,000 people attend on the first day.

October 5th, 2011 – an international day of action results in
   many highly reported arrests.

November 15, 2011 – NYPD evicts occupiers from Zuccotti Park.

December 17, 2011 – On the three-month anniversary of the
protests, organizers of the protest called for a "reoccupation."

January, 2012 – A series of smaller protests attempt to
   unsuccessfully reoccupy Zuccotti Park.
What is Activist Archivists?

2. Concerned with
licensing, longevity, metadata, security, and public
accessibility of moving image content generated in the
activist sphere.

What is Global Revolution TV?
What is Global Revolution TV?

• Largely streams footage related to Occupy Wall Street
since September 17th, 2011, but hosts and trains
activist livestreamers in other parts of the world
What is Global Revolution TV?

• Primarily uses Livestream software, a web-based
  broadcasting application that allows
livestreaming, editing, mixing from different sources of
  video.

Digital archives project planning

       • User interviews
       • Assessment of needs and our goals
       • Project plan
       • Staffing/roles
       • Tool selection (ongoing)
       • Collaboration with creators
       • Collaboration with advisors
STEP 1: figure out where the files are going to come from
                    (what to collect?)
STEP 2: set goals, policies and establish workflow elements
     (standards, systems, partnerships, redundancy)
STEP 3: establish who is creating good stuff, and who
can help with the archiving efforts
STEP 4: get data, preliminary ingest processes (get files into
secure storage with access system w/ workable UI)
STEP 5: assign metadata/catalog (get database to talk to
                interface for cataloging)
Could be asking users to fill this in
This is what it would look like and from where we
could export as a CSV and bring into Omeka
STEP 6: Resolve “technical difficulties” as much as
possible & promote access to assets
STEP 7: Consider prospects for
migration, normalization, future
 emulation, redundant storage
STEP 8: long term stewardship?
Archives working group’s informal
    work with the Internet Archive

Sent over 200 links to websites to harvest

De-prioritized initial research interest

Immediate access to collection is helpful

Email suggestions to graham@archive.org
Archive-It.Org
The decision to not have orphan works

It would be very easy to end up with a lot of
 orphan works

The working group approved my proposal that
we only collect CC licensed work

There is no ‘OWS philosophy’ on licensing or
problem with ‘exclusivity’ per se, we just didn’t
want a ton of orphan content.
Creative Commons Licensing

Mini-DV collection assessment
Content
Livestreamed footage from the November
15th, 2012 raid on Zuccotti Park.

High quality recordings of the early days of the
movement before Mini-DV became “obsolete.”
Scope & Risks

Incomplete metadata.

Poor storage in an already poor environment.

No backup or system for access.
Recommendations
Hold community archiving events for volunteers
to re-label tapes, enter metadata into a
database, and capture material to a digital file.

Upload access copies to the Internet Archive
for universal access with complete metadata.
What’s the archives working group been
     doing with digital materials?
Sharing and collecting digital files
       at Share Day at Eyebeam

Collaboration with artist in residence at
Eyebeam, Taeyoon Choi (Speakers Corners)

Opportunity to share finished or works in
progress with the audience and/or the OWS
Archives Working Group

The event was a lot of fun
http://owsarchives.wordpress.com/why-archive-ows/
At a Crossroads

Test servers and plug ins have shown us a lot

About 500 gigabytes of data

Possible collaboration with activist owned
tech company pending funds to pull own
weight in thecollective (membership model?)
Some lessons learned

R-E-S-P-E-C-T your creators and colleagues

Talk to people who know the context

Have a plan

Make imperfect decisions instead of none

Keep notes
Thank You!

  • 3. What is Activist Archivists? 2. Concerned with licensing, longevity, metadata, security, and public accessibility of moving image content generated in the activist sphere.
  • 5. What is Global Revolution TV?
  • 6. What is Global Revolution TV? • Largely streams footage related to Occupy Wall Street since September 17th, 2011, but hosts and trains activist livestreamers in other parts of the world
  • 7. What is Global Revolution TV? • Primarily uses Livestream software, a web-based broadcasting application that allows livestreaming, editing, mixing from different sources of video.
  • 10. Suits for Wall Street: Subversive Business Outfits as Tactical Camouflage
  • 11. Disclaimer about the term “digital preservation workflow”
  • 12. Digital archives project planning • User interviews • Assessment of needs and our goals • Project plan • Staffing/roles • Tool selection (ongoing) • Collaboration with creators • Collaboration with advisors
  • 13. STEP 1: figure out where the files are going to come from (what to collect?)
  • 14. STEP 2: set goals, policies and establish workflow elements (standards, systems, partnerships, redundancy)
  • 15. STEP 3: establish who is creating good stuff, and who can help with the archiving efforts
  • 16. STEP 4: get data, preliminary ingest processes (get files into secure storage with access system w/ workable UI)
  • 17. STEP 5: assign metadata/catalog (get database to talk to interface for cataloging)
  • 18. Could be asking users to fill this in
  • 19. This is what it would look like and from where we could export as a CSV and bring into Omeka
  • 20. STEP 6: Resolve “technical difficulties” as much as possible & promote access to assets
  • 21. STEP 7: Consider prospects for migration, normalization, future emulation, redundant storage
  • 22. STEP 8: long term stewardship?
  • 23. Archives working group’s informal work with the Internet Archive Sent over 200 links to websites to harvest De-prioritized initial research interest Immediate access to collection is helpful Email suggestions to graham@archive.org
  • 25. The decision to not have orphan works It would be very easy to end up with a lot of orphan works The working group approved my proposal that we only collect CC licensed work There is no ‘OWS philosophy’ on licensing or problem with ‘exclusivity’ per se, we just didn’t want a ton of orphan content.
  • 27. Omeka Free, open source, flexible, extensible Initiative of George Mason University/Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media PHP with useful plug ins Anticipated assessments, then compose feature requests to programmers in Tech Ops or others who know PHP and want to help
  • 28. Omeka test on Amazon S3
  • 30. Content Livestreamed footage from the November 15th, 2012 raid on Zuccotti Park. High quality recordings of the early days of the movement before Mini-DV became “obsolete.”
  • 31. Scope & Risks Incomplete metadata. Poor storage in an already poor environment. No backup or system for access.
  • 32. Recommendations Hold community archiving events for volunteers to re-label tapes, enter metadata into a database, and capture material to a digital file. Upload access copies to the Internet Archive for universal access with complete metadata.
  • 33. What’s the archives working group been doing with digital materials?
  • 34. Sharing and collecting digital files at Share Day at Eyebeam Collaboration with artist in residence at Eyebeam, Taeyoon Choi (Speakers Corners) Opportunity to share finished or works in progress with the audience and/or the OWS Archives Working Group The event was a lot of fun

Editor's Notes

  1. The group does not limit its activities to just those relating to Occupy, but also trains, educates, and assists livestreamers in other types of activism. In February and March, Global Revolution was involved in protest activities in Spain.

G8 Summit in Heiligendamm, GermanyCall to International Demonstration in Rostock, June 2, 2007At the beginning of June 2007, the governments of the seven most important industrialised countries and Russia will meet for the ‘G8 Summit’ at the Baltic seaside resort of Heiligendamm. The ‘Group of 8′ (G8) is an institution without legitimacy. Nevertheless, as a self-appointed informal world government, they make decisions which affect the whole of humanity. The policies of the G8 stand for a neoliberal globalisation and deregulation, economic policies oriented towards the capital returns of international financial investors and companies.• Every five seconds, a child dies somewhere in the world from hunger. More than 800 million people are chronically malnourished. Primarily responsible are unjust world trade policies, forwarded by the rich industrialised countries within the G8 and other international institutions.• Despite the whole-hearted promises of the G8 Summit at Gleneagles in 2005, until now only a small proportion of the debt of Southern countries has been cancelled.• Through their promotion of liberalisation and privatisation, the G8 have not only increased poverty in the global South, but also in the industrialised countries. The worldwide plundering of raw materials and other natural resources is being accelerated.• At the same time as the rich industrialised countries seal themselves off from refugees and migrants, those who nevertheless arrive are illegalised and exploited as cheap labourers without rights.• The G8 states are the biggest destroyers of the climate. They are alone responsible for 43% of worldwide CO2 emissions as well as being in favour of a renaissance of nuclear energy, which we decidedly reject.• The G8 states are responsible for 90% of worldwide weapons exports and a new era of war for raw materials. They are the leaders of a world order based on war, which leads to migration, displacement, new hate and violence in many countries. The world shaped by the dominance of the G8 is a world of war, hunger, social divisions, environmental destruction and barriers against migrants and refugees. At our mass demonstration on 2 June 2007 in Rostock, we want to protest against this and show the alternatives. Together with millions of people around the world we say: Another World Is Possible!• For the immediate cancellation of illegitimate debt and comprehensive debt relief for the countries of the global South!• Against the sale of public goods and services – for equal social rights and standards worldwide!• For a speedy and radical transfer to renewable energies! Dangerous climate change and further wars for oil and gas reserves can only be prevented through a significant rise in energy efficiency and the transfer to a sustainable economy.• For the immediate and permanent abandonment of nuclear energy and for complete worldwide nuclear disarmament!• For the showing of solidarity with, and the living together with equal rights, of all people – against every form of racism and fascism!• For the overcoming of walls and borders! Against detention camps and deportation!• For a peaceful world! End the military imposition of economic and power-political interests through the G8 states!Globalisation in the interests of the majority of people requires a fair relationship between industrialised and developing countries, and means freedom, justice, social security, democracy and the conservation of the planet’s natural resources for the next generation.Such an alternative globalisation will not result from exclusive and insular summit meetings, but rather from below out of the global movement of people and initiatives who stand up for another, better world. This global movement will make itself heard through numerous actions and events during the G8 Summit. At the International Demonstration on 2 June 2007 in Rostock, we will make the size, strength and diversity of our colourful and broad protests visible.<a href="http://dissent-archive.ucrony.net/dissentnetwork/node/1998.html" rel="nofollow">dissent-archive.ucrony.net/dissentnetwork/node/1998.html</a>*+--------+| TAGS |+--------+G8 Heiligendamm Demo Rostock "Make Capitalism History" "Another World is Possible" ows Capitalism KapitalismusAntikapitalismus Profit Widerstand Protest

Before we move on to the collection status, I wanted to show this video clip, an example of how viewing livestream footage of an event can change one’s perceptive of it after only learning about it from mainstream media reports. And as you are watching this, pay attention to the quality of the video, I’ll talk about it later in the presentation. * Play VideoI don’t know about you but when I heard about the midnight raid on Zuccotti Park - cops effectively kicking out protestors and destroying the small tent city they created - I imagined a scene a lot more noisy and active than the eerie disquiet found in much of the livestream footage I viewed as part of this assessment. The main difference between livestream and most other kinds of broadcast video is artlessness. Streamers are only interested in capture footage, as much of is as possible, with little or no applied aesthetic, which means there are no producers, graphic designers, music and little editing contouring the output to arguably a presentation that is truthy at best. While the material is unpolished and sometimes hard to watch, it is also largely unaltered and provides a unique cultural output that lies somewhere in between media journalism and home movie making. It’s the Zapruder film has evolved into a style of journalism. So we know what they do and why it is important, now what format is the material on and what are the preservation risks.
